Showbiz 411 colunmist Roger Friedman has been quite consistent with dishing the goods on Mariah Carey’s forthcoming project ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel’. The colunmist has even shed further light on Mariah’s official “first” single which is entitled ‘I Want to Know What Love Is’. The track is a power ballad which was originally recorded by the British-American rock band Foreigner. However, Mariah is said to be serving up a “gospel-tinged version” of the Mick Jones-penned song. New song titles have also been introduced to us such as ‘Up Out My Face’, ‘More than Just Friends‘ and ‘Angels Cry’. Those, alongside the previously confirmed tracks such as ‘Betcha’, ‘Obsessed’, ‘H.A.T.E.U’, ‘Candy Bling’, ‘Ribbon’, ‘Standing O’s’, ‘Impossible’, ‘It’s a Wrap’ and ‘Inseparable’. The running order is still being finalized but Friedman says that although the project is a one hour ballad-fest, it will still serve as something towards “what the kids want”.
With a few stink bombs in between, Mariah puts out ‘Emancipation of Mimi’ eight years later and comes back big. The success was huge. I loved that one because in my opinion it was the closest thing to ‘Butterfly’. With ‘E=MC²’, expectations were riding high because of the success of Emancipation. Did she deliver? Nope. So I stayed listening to my Butterfly’s and my Emancipation’s just to remind me of why I am a huge fan of this woman’s music (even the albums BEFORE Butterfly were timeless, let’s not forget those).
When I read that Mariah, who can now be considered a legend (at 40-years-old I must add), goes out of her way to follow trends simply because she wants to appeal to the kiddies just shows me how far she has fallen as a respected artist. I still have hope she may deliver some good songs to us, but with the gimmicky ‘Obsessed’ now recieving the ‘buzz single’ treatment and the album encountering many pushbacks, it’s not a good look. I’m hoping all this gambling pays off in the long run.
