This is an interview where Utada Hikaru discusses the tracks on her new album, "This Is The One".
The album has already been released in the US digitally and will be physically released May 12, 2009.
Come Back To Me
Very simple, slightly R&B pop. Very mainstream-sounding ballad. I notice a lot of people tell me they like the way I use "photoshop" in my lyrics. It is one of my favorite lines in the song.
I think this means "I'm dying" in Spanish (I die actually). This song is about being depressed and feeling a bit unstable emotionally. I will listen to this even though i don't listen to my own songs ever
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI
I sampled the Piano part of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and added my own melodies and lyrics to it.
Apple and Cinnamon
A lot of people tell me Apple and Cinnamon is their favorite track out of the ones they heard. To my surprise, it's been received very well by hip-hop guys and I've got them singing "Apple and Cinnamon~~" all day. It's very fun but I'm happy with that.
Taking My Money Back
Very Serious, but humorous song. Might have the strongest story line. I'm writing from the point of view of a girl who had a very pimp-like boyfriend and finally decided to leave him. She's saying I'm taking my money back. [laughing] This is not a direct true story and I don't want this going to my old boyfriends. It's fiction.
This One (Crying Like a Child)
This is where I got the title of the album from. it's a ballad for sure. It's a bit more rock-poppish than the others, but it's a very unique song i think, and I mention Freddy Mercury again. It seems I have to do it for every freaking album. [laughing] Oh wait, can I say that?
Automatic Part II
It's a very introductory song of who I am as an artist and I say directly things like "Hello my name is Utada la de da de da" I had the image of making a song like Snoop Doggy Dog: the "Snoop Doggy dog~" or Eminem "My Name is~" I wanted to do a parody of those songs. The lyrics again are very humorous.
Might be the sexiest sound of song in terms of lyrics. The title speaks for itself.
I can't wait for the Europeans to hear this one. In the demo stage of the song I was calling it the Austin track because it's like international spy. There's a little part in it where I speak a little with a British accent. Just a bit.
On And On
The most clubbiest sounding on the album. A very fun track. Good times.
