The Mummy 4.......REALLY?

Rick O’Connell and the rest of the crew from the “Mummy” series have fought through The Rock and battled Jet Li, but could it be that the most serious immortal threat to society isn’t a mummy at all, but…

You know what? We’re just gonna go ahead and put a massive spoiler warning here before finishing this sentence. If you haven’t seen “Mummy 3” yet, read at your own risk.

…Rick himself?

Brendan Frasier as an immortal hero up against an immortal villain is just one of many ideas “Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” director Rob Cohen wants to explore in another installment of the blockbuster series, he told MTV News, insisting that a fourth installment is all but guaranteed if audiences respond well to “Mummy 3.”

“Rick, because he was treated by the pool of eternal life, Rick is now immortal. I’d love to explore how that plays out for him,” Cohen said. “Another spoiler, Jonathan [John Hannah] winds up with the artifact in this film and he doesn’t realize, nor do we, what its powers are. In my mind, that artifact still has a lot of prizes in it, the eye of Shangri La, this big diamond.”

When we spoke to Maria Bello in February, she was adamant that there would be more “Mummy” movies, even going so far as to predict the fourth would take place in the Amazon. When we caught up with Fraser a few months later, he suggested Peru.

Geographically, they were too close for coincidence. We wondered then, somewhat rhetorically, did they talk about it with each other beforehand?

You bet, Cohen said, declaring that Peru or Mexico would absolutely be the setting for “Mummy 4.”

“What I’m really happy about is that, by taking ‘The Mummy’ out of Egypt and putting it in China, by exploring a different approach to the quest for immortality, we now have it clear that the ‘Mummy’ franchise can travel,” he said. “Now we know that if we want to go to Mexico or we want to go to Peru, we can because there’s a cultural truth there of the mummies and these beautiful cultures.

“They have a lot of mummies. The Aztec culture had a lot of mummies and some of their mummy designs for the Foundation Army were taken from Mexican mummies that they have found,” he added. “So I think that somehow that might make the basis of a good story.”

What do you think? Would you like to see “Mummy 4”? Mexico sound about right for you? What about Fraser as an immortal? Sound off on your thoughts below.
