Nobel Prize week day 2: Physics!

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi. Manabe and Hasselmann were each awarded a quarter of the prize for their work "for the physical modelling of Earth's climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming," and Parisi was awarded half for "the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales." Manabe is a senior meteorologist at Princeton University, Hasselmann is at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany, and Parisi is a professor at at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy.

What does the prize split mean? It's about the money honey! You may not know that the Nobel Prize comes with a cash prize. This year's prize award is set at 10 million Swedish kronor, which is approximately $1,144,000 US, and the same amount as last year. You can see a history of the amounts since 1901 in this pdf document.

Tomorrow: Chemistry! OP is keeping her fingers crossed for a professor from her alma mater for his work in nanotechnology.

New Books Hitting Shelves This Week

The dead of Loraille do not rest.

Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a ravenous hunger for the living. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who trade whispers about her scarred hands and troubled past.

When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes her—but death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself.

As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believe—if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.

Fictional Gamergate Series In The Works From Mind Riot Entertainment & Brianna Wu

Mind Riot Entertainment and Brianna Wu are developing a fictionalization of the Gamergate harassment scandal for television.

“We’re not going to retread the same story told in thousands of news stories from outlets such as the New York Times and Washington Post, plus multiple documentaries like GTFO. Our series will focus on new, fictional people within the industry reacting to a horrific situation. By explaining how they were unable to stop the video game industry from being hijacked by the lunatic fringe – we can show how the tactics of Gamergate were the same ones that led to tragedies like Christchurch and January 6th,” said Wu.

Emma Chamberlain: “people aren’t ready to accept influencers as celebrities in fashion”

The influencer was harshly criticized for her attendance to the met gala, one of the most important events in the fashion industry.

The influencer and YouTube star has been trying to swerve into high-end fashion, walking for Louis Vuitton and appearing in vogue and v magazine (digital).

When asked if there’s “pushback” about her and other creators entering the fashion world: “Yes, a thousand percent”. Adding, “I think some people are not ready to accept it as a new form of celebrity, which I totally understand because it's like mixing something new with something classic and it can feel wrong”.

Are influencers celebrities?

Olivia Rodrigo Opens Up About Growth, Britney Spears and the Pressure of Getting It All Right

Olivia Rodrigo covers Teen Vogue’s October issue and opens up about growth, Britney Spears and the pressure of getting it all right.

“My favorite people in the world are people I feel like will be totally honest with me and care about me enough to be like, ‘Oh, you can do better,’” she says, referring specifically to Sour producer Dan Nigro. “It’s just about finding people you can trust and whose opinions you can trust.”

“I’m so happy that Britney’s case is getting so much attention, and I just hope that she gets all the justice she deserves and lives the best life she possibly can. As a society we definitely have to reexamine the way we treat women in the entertainment industry, and not just for ourselves — it’s unhealthy for young girls to be looking at all that stuff in the media. It paints a bad picture.”

Jamie Lee Curtis Says Plastic Surgery And Social Media Are ‘Wiping Out Generations Of Beauty’

Jamie Lee Curtis, 62, has some real concerns about the effects of plastic surgery.

“I tried plastic surgery and it didn’t work. It got me addicted to Vicodin. I’m 22 years sober now. The current trend of fillers and procedures, and this obsession with filtering, and the things that we do to adjust our appearance on Zoom are wiping out generations of beauty. Once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back.”

“I use social media to sell things and amplify things I care about. Period. The rest is cancer. I never read one comment. It’s also very dangerous. It’s like giving a chainsaw to a toddler. We just don’t know the longitudinal effect, mentally, spiritually and physically, on a generation of young people who are in agony because of social media, because of the comparisons to others. All of us who are old enough know that it’s all a lie. It’s a real danger to young people.”

Pitchfork Does That Thing Where They Try To Correct Their Mistakes to Maintain Credibility

Pitchfork has gone back and re-reviewed 19 albums to rescore them. Some scores went up (way up) and others down.

According to Pitchfork:

These adjustments are born out of conversations we have all the time here on staff, much like the conversations you, our dear opinionated reader, have as well. They are hypothetical, which is to say, not canon, but rather a fun little diversion, a conversation-starter brought to you by the individual grievances of the Pitchfork staff. From slight adjustments to major reconsiderations to grave errors in judgment, enjoy a bit of our revisionist history.

A lot of these albums aren't even that old (one literally came out last year lmfao) which just kind of makes it feel like they're reacting more to public perception than having a justifiable reason for their ratings in the first place. Anyway...

Extended Clip: The Last Duel

A 5 minute extended clip of The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott has been released.

The screen play was written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. Damon and Affleck also star in the film alongside Adam Driver, and Jodie Comer.

Trigger Warning

The plot is based on true events that took place in France in 1386. Marguerite de Carrouges (played by Comer) says she was raped by her husband's best friend. Her husband, knight Jean de Carrouges (played by Damon), challenges his friend and squire Jacques Le Gris (Driver) to trial by combat. It is the last legally sanctioned duel in France's history.

I'm usually all for medieval bullshit but this looks like piss omg!! Also I'm suuuuuuure Damon and Affleck wrote a ~brilliant~ movie that centres on the assault of a woman. Affleck taking "write what you know" to heart.

Britney speaks briefly her feelings on the conservatorship

"This picture is everything to me !!! It makes me want to cry ... she’s saving her divine feminine sister 🧜🏻‍♀️ !!!! I suggest if you have a friend that’s been in a house that feels really small for four months … no car … no phone … no door for privacy and they have to work around 10 hours a day 7 days a week and give tons of blood weekly with never a day off … I strongly suggest you go pick up your friend and get them the hell outta there !!!!! If you’re like my family who says things like “sorry, you’re in a conservatorship” … probably thinking you’re different so they can fuck with you !!!! Thankfully I found an amazing attorney Mathew Rosengart who has helped change my life 🌹!!!!"

OP's note: Truthfully I really didn't know how to title this post.

Why Fatphobia is Still a Problem Onscreen

Today’s film, TV and cultural conversations are making big strides in addressing a number of long-entrenched prejudices, so why do many people still act like it’s okay to mock, lecture or belittle fat people? Fatphobia is so normalized and pervasive in our society that we might not even see all the ways it manifests. Today, at last, some more nuanced stories are destigmatizing and centering fat characters in all their complexity -- and creators like Shrill’s Aidy Bryant and Lindy West are even reclaiming the word 'fat' itself.
