Spice Girls Say You'll Be There

It's official! It's been 25 years of the Spice Girls! ZIG A ZIG AHHHHHHHH!

These 5 women broke barriers, broke records and SPICED UP THE LIVES of millions! The Spice Girls celebrate 25 years where they revolutionized the pop genre and instilled GIRL POWER! The women commemorate this milestone by shitting out a cash grab of their debut single "Wannabe". The Spice Girls endured so much criticism, sexism and fought music execs who said a girl band would never succeed but they said fuck that & fuck you and took over the globe, truly making it a SPICE WORLD. Sadly, two years later Geri Halliwell and her selfish ass left the band to embark on a lackluster solo career. This was the beginning of the end because the girls were over worked, exhausted and Melanie C battled depression/resentment for being Sporty Spice. The girls embarked on a major tour in 2019 which proved to be a major success raking in $80 million for 13 dates.

Grant Gustin to reprise his role as The CW's Barry Allen in Ezra Miller's 'THE FLASH'

- Grant Gustin is about to do what Stephen Amell never could. He's gonna be in a DC movie! He has reportedly join professional fan beater and dirty toenails enthusiast Ezra Miller's 'THE FLASH'.
- The move is not a huge surprise since the film is set to tackle the multiverse and has Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck (and reportedly Robert Pattinson as well) reprising their Batman roles from other timelines. Also, back in January 2020, during the 4th episode of 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' Ezra Miller made a cameo in The CW's 'The Flash' setting up that he gets his name from Grant Gustin's Barry Allen.
- The Flash is set to premiere November 4, 2022.

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern Criticises Christchurch Massacre Film Project

  • Since being announced last Thursday (10th) the Rose Byrne-led film about Ardern’s response to the 2019 Christchurch mosque massacre has been widely criticized in New Zealand.

  • Today, veteran producer Philippa Campbell, a producer on TV hit 'Top Of The Lake', apologised for her involvement and said she had not realized the pain the film would cause.

  • “I have listened to the concerns raised over recent days and I have heard the strength of people’s views,” Campbell said in a statement to New Zealand media. “I now agree that the events of 15 March 2019 are too raw for film at this time and do not wish to be involved with a project that is causing such distress.”

  • New Zealand’s Prime Minister today criticized the project as poorly timed and focused on the wrong subject.

  • “In my view, which is a personal view, it feels very soon and very raw for New Zealand,” she told local media TVNZ. “And while there are so many stories that should be told at some point, I don’t consider mine to be one of them.”

  • A petition from the National Islamic Youth Association calling for the movie to be cancelled has gathered close to 60,000 signatures, arguing the film would marginalize “the victims and survivors and instead centres the response of a white woman”.

  • Lianne Dalziel, the Mayor of Christchurch, where the attacks took place, also said movie crews would not be welcome in her city.

  • “I’m just so outraged that they even think that this is an appropriate thing to do,” she told news outlet RNZ.

Creators of "Pen15" discuss the "witch" episode in Season 2

Director Sam Zvibleman and Anna Konkle joins a podcast to discuss the "Vendy Wiccany" episode of Season 2 of Pen15

Sam Zvibleman: "Things kept happening with that episode, while we were shooting, that were mystical and magical. There's that scene in the green house, where they're doing the spells, and all the sudden, we call action, and there's this orange sky comes over and wind is blowing like mad. As they're getting into it - casting these spells, the energy from outside is picking up, and I look over to Andy (camera operator) and sort-of looks at me, and I said, "GO AHEAD" and he starts shaking the camera.

"Being in the woods, the way that the sun would come through the trees. Everything kept working in that episode as almost as there was some spell of magic going on."

The second part of Season 2 was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic

Anna Konkle: "We have a couple of weeks left (of filming) and that will be at the end of the summer (of 2021). And then we'll be in post-production for a few months. We'll get it out as soon as we can.

Austen on Netflix: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan to play Lizzie Bennet, new Persuasion stills

Earlier this month, Netflix announced a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice entitled The Netherfield Girls which is billed as an Easy A style adaptation (OP note: and hopefully also in the vein of Clueless?). The script was written by Becca Gleason (Summer '03), who will also direct, and the film will star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Lizzie Bennet.

Today, Netflix also released the first stills from the Dakota Johnson-led adaptation of Persuasion. To the surprise of this OP, they confirm the movie is not a modern adaptation but is in fact a period piece.

MARINA earns career-best reviews for 'Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land'

Marina Diamandis' fifth studio album, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, is receiving the best reviews of her career. As of this writing, it holds a Metascore of 81 based on six reviews, putting it nearly 20 points above 2019's polarizing Love + Fear.

"...a ten-track wonder that is a more mature and eclectic take on her gloriously femme and thundering electro-pop... MARINA makes a strong case for embracing a change of trajectory: in life, music and art." ★★★★ —CLASH

Kevin Hart Slams Cancel Culture

“If somebody has done something truly damaging then, absolutely, a consequence should be attached. But when you just talk about… nonsense? When you’re talking, ‘Someone said! They need to be taken [down]!’ Shut the fuck up! What are you talking about? When did we get to a point where life was supposed to be perfect? Where people were supposed to operate perfectly all the time? I don’t understand. I don’t expect perfection from my kids. I don’t expect it from my wife, friends, employees. Because, last I checked, the only way you grow up is from fucking up. I don’t know a kid who hasn’t fucked up or done some dumb shit.”

“You’re thinking that things you say will come back and bite you on the ass. I can’t be the comic today that I was when I got into this. We forgot comedians are going for the laugh. You’re not saying something to make people angry. That’s not why I’m on stage. I’m trying to make you laugh and if I did not make you laugh I failed. That’s my consequence.”

“There is nothing I can do. You’re looking at a younger version of myself. A comedian trying to be funny and, at that attempt, failing. Apologies were made. I understand now how it comes off. I look back and cringe. So it’s growth. It’s about growth.”

An oral history of Kids in the Hall's unabashedly outspoken Buddy Cole played by Scott Thompson

CBC has posted an interview with Scott Thompson and other cast members of The Kids in the Hall where they talk about the character of Buddy Cole, an unabashedly gay man who showed up in the series with fascinating and outrageous monologues. Like most things from the 80s–90s, parts of Buddy's monologues don't age well, but if you appreciated Buddy, the piece is filled with great quotes. They speak about the origins of the character, his evolution, and backlash, too.

For a gay man from my generation, everything was about hiding, everything was about proving that you are a man and that you weren't a f-g. Everything was about acting. I was working very hard to hide all of the things inside of me that gave away to the world that I was gay. Because for my generation, it was absolutely deadly to be known as gay. Either you'd be beat up or you die of AIDS. So for me to do Buddy Cole was a very political act.
--Scott Thompson

Collapse )

Buddy performed monologues about racism, AIDS, gay bars, being gay-bashed, corresponding with the Queen of England, and more. Much of the humour was meant to push boundaries and expose topics not spoken about or known by the majority heterosexual culture. Here's an absurd one about dinosaurs at the gay bar from December 1989 (cw: slurs):

Buddy was a controverisal figure then and now, but between Buddy's monologues on the show, the topics he raised, and the general presence of gay culture and characters beyond Buddy (including all the sketches filmed on "the Steps," a notable landmark in the Toronto gay village), The Kids in the Hall played a significant role in Canadian LGBTQ+ culture and awareness. There will also be an upcoming The Kids in the Hall reboot on Amazon.

Jon M. Chu and In the Heights Actors Address Colorism in the Film’s Casting

source

The Root’s Felice León asked director Jon M. Chu and some of the cast about the movie not having more afro latino actors in it

Chu: "In the end, when we were looking at the cast, we tried to get people who were best for those roles. But I hear you on trying to fill those cast members with darker skin. I think that's a really good conversation to have, something that we should all be talking about."

Leslie Grace (Nina): “I didn’t realize until making this movie that I didn’t really get to see myself or people that looked like my siblings, that are darker than me, onscreen. I hope that this is cracking that glass ceiling. Because I do hope to see my brothers and sisters that are darker than me lead these movies.”

Melissa Barrera (Vanessa): “In the audition process, which was a long audition process, there were a lot of Afro-Latinos there. A lot of darker skinned people. And I think they were looking for just the right people for the roles. For the person that embodied each character in the fullest extent. Because the cast ended up being us, and because Washington Heights is a melting pot of Black and Latinx people, Jon and Lin wanted the dancers and the big numbers to feel very truthful to what the community looks like.”

Katt Williams’ Take on “Cancel Culture”

“Some of these things are for the benefit of everything. Nobody likes the speed limit, but it’s necessary. Nobody likes the shoulder of the road, but it’s there for a reason. My point is People weren’t all that extremely funny when they could say whatever they wanted to say. At the end of the day, there’s no cancel culture. Cancellation doesn’t have its own culture. People without a voice being trashed by people just because they had a bigger name than them, and more money than them, and a better office than them. I don’t know what people we think got ‘canceled’ that we wish we had back.”

"If all that’s going to happen is that we have to be more sensitive in the way that we talk, isn’t that what we want anyway? I’m saying, your job as a comedian is to please the most amount of people with your art. Don’t call somebody this word when you know it affects all of these people.”

“If you wanna offend somebody, no one took those words away from you. But don’t use the ... when you really mean ... Don’t say this word instead of saying ... Look, If these are the confines that are keeping you from doing the craft God put you to, then it probably ain’t for you.”
