Official Alfa Romeo Monaco Poster

Hello, fellow brokies! After being cancelled in 2020, the Monaco GP is back on the 2021 calendar. Beloveds this post is pretty content heavy so bear with me. Today we continue with Round 5 of 23 in the Formula 1 2021 season and today we touch down in the most prestigious race circuit in the most prestigious motorsport - the Principality of Monaco, home of Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. Also quite a few drivers have places there, so it's likely some of them just fucking walked to work this weekend. Yes, yes, yes, Monaco is very *O'Jays voice* Money, money, money... money! But besides Silverstone, Monaco is incredibly historic and can be lead to some exciting races and the vibes. Let's take a look back at some of Monaco's exciting moments. (Also this needs to be a night race, maybe Singapore could deliver for us this year)

Should musicians promote and reveal info about their songwriting?

A columnist for Texas Monthly recently wrote a piece arguing against album promotions. In it, she claimed:

"Authenticity doesn’t count when it’s prerecorded and packaged and sold to you with an additional note telling you to check out more of its authenticity over on It’s further undermined by the paint-by-numbers vapidity of celebrity media. All of this makes it harder to just enjoy the music."

For example, she criticizes St. Vincent for posting this polished video to her Instagram in which she explained that The Melting of the Sun was an ode to her female artistic heroes who had been “met with hostility in the world that they did not deserve, and a lot of times it was just because they were telling the truth.”

"I wasn’t so much bothered by what St. Vincent said, I was irked by the video itself. It obviously had been filmed at the same time as a similar one she made about the album’s first single, Pay Your Way in Pain—she was wearing the same maroon jumpsuit and sitting in front of the same white piano. These prepackaged selfie videos dropped like press releases, to be regurgitated in entertainment rags’ inevitable, identical 'Listen to St. Vincent’s New Single' posts... However sincere the feminist sentiments behind The Melting of the Sun may be (and I do think they are!), they are presented with such obsessive polish that they just come off as #YasQueenGirlboss pandering."

She argues that long album roll-outs by St. Vincent and Kacey Musgraves causes fans to enjoy the music less. She wrote, "The narrative being presented—that 2018’s Golden Hour was her psychedelic ode to falling in love, and this new one is going to be about the subsequent divorce— is something fans have known was going to happen since the minute her divorce was announced. So what purpose do the details actually serve? Does knowing the specifics about how exactly Kacey did her soul-searching do anything to stoke anticipation? ... We might by that time have choked to death on the commodified version of Kacey that her publicists have been pushing down our throats."

However, she does praise Beyonce who drops music without promotion and lets fans search for meaning on their own. She wrote, "But the crucial distinction is that her self-promotion serves as an extension of her art. And it works! It gets me excited about her work. She doesn’t sell the volume of records she did in her twenties, but she’s still racking up awards and dominating the discourse."

ONTD Original: Let's Talk About Olivia Rodrigo's Album Marketing

Love her or hate her but Olivia Rodrigo is one hell of a force to be reckon with and is quickly becoming the next it girl in music.

While all of the following have been done in some shape or form before by other artists respectively, her team did a flawless of marketing her debut album Sour.

First up we have the Sour Heartbreak Hotline which is a live phone number that rings until you're greeted by Olivia herself along side an ascetically pleasing commercial.

After a few rings you reach her voicemail greeting: "Hey, it's Olivia. Thank you so much for calling the Sour Heartbreak Hotline. Keep listening for your free taste of Sour the album. If that's not enough 4 u, call back later for more flavors and don't forget, Sour is out May 21st. Love you! Bye!"

After the message ends you get a preview of the (unreleased at the time) track enough 4 u.

Next up while staying true the albums over all aesthetic Oliva partnered with Sour Patch Kids to release her own exclusive line of sour purple candies.

Finally we have the Sour Car Wash brought to you by Spotify in which fans were able to get a car wash, meet Olivia and even snag a box her Sour Patch Kids collection from Olivia herself.

Again, I know that she's not the first person to market her album using these strategies but I think her record label stayed true to the albums aesthetic at the same time.

NYT prints a frankly insane ad featuring Gigi and Bella Hadid & Dua Lipa...

The situation the last couple of weeks has been insane to watch from a media and overall public narrative angle. In a plethora of lows, the New York Times always manages to pull through by going even lower and publishing the advert below:
The advert was supposedly paid for by the World Values Network. A day ago, AP fired a reporter because of her history of pro-Palestine activism and there are a lot of stories about news rooms intimidating reporters and threatening their careers for just advocating for fairer reporting on Palestine and Israel.

Teyonah Parris Felt Like She Was Always Holding Her Breath While On 'Mad Men'

As you might recall Teyonah Parris had a recurring role on AMC's Mad Men, but she revealed in an interview with Collider how she was never aware of where she stood in the cast hierarchy.

She talked about being a part of the groundbreaking show as Dawn, the first Black secretary at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. In her interview, she said how she felt like she was always holding her breath, waiting to be let go from the series because she was never specifically told she was a recurring character.

“I was a recurring [cast member]. That did happen. I was really excited. But I never knew I was a recurring [cast member] because they never told me, ‘You’re a recurring cast member]!’ It was literally for the entire time I was there, I would say it was like three years, one episode at a time," she said. "They never said, ‘Hey, this season you’ll be in five episodes so I could be like, ‘Yes! Okay! This is great!’ It was always, ‘We’re checking your availability for tomorrow.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, I didn’t die. They didn’t fire me or kick me out of the office,’ so I always felt like I was holding my breath with that show because they never actually were like, ‘Hey, this is the future we have for you,’ etc. So it was always an inch at a time and never knowing if the door was gonna close that moment.”

In all, she had a great experience with her cast members. She said "“As I think back on the experience, I’m so grateful for it. I learned a lot on that show," she said. "I loved watching Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks as they [performed.] [I]t was a very special piece and the time period and all that, so they were wonderful to work with and to watch. But personally, I just always felt like I was on eggshells. I just never knew.

Her comments make so much sense - glad to finally get her thoughts on it after all this time, I remember while it was airing a lot of us black viewers being frustrated with how her character was being used to make some characters seem more liberal/open-minded and how her storyline/perspective was under-told.

Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender characters' ages confirmed

A few months ago, dubious entertainment site The Illuminerdi published an article stating that Netflix had decided to do some rather odd switcheroo with the ages of the two the main characters of their upcoming live-action adaptation of beloved series, Avatar:The Last Airbender. Namely, the sibling duo of Sokka and Katara would have their ages switches around, with Katara being the older sibling in the live action adaptation.

Needless to say, these news infuriated the vast majority of Avatar's loyal fanbase. Fans complaining that this change would significantly affect the canon dynamics between the sibling duo that are so pivotal to both character's foundations and that Netflix was trying to appeal to an infamously loud and entitled fanbase of a non-canon ship that has not shut up since the show ended more than 10 years ago.

Turns out this worrying was all for naught, as the far more reputable @AvatarNews_ has exclusively shared that the main characters ages will be the following:

Meghan Markle didn't kill herself bc she didn't want Prince Harry to lose another woman he loved

In the Apple TV+ series "The Me You Can't See", Prince Harry tells Oprah about how Meghan Markle almost committed suicide while she was pregnant with Archie but stopped herself because she didn't want Harry to lose another woman he loved.

"The thing that stopped her from seeing it through was how unfair it would be on me after everything that had happened to my mum and to now be put in a position of losing another woman in my life, with a baby inside of her, our baby," he said. "The scariest thing for her was her clarity of thought. She hadn’t ‘lost it.’ She wasn’t crazy. She wasn’t self-medicating, be it through pills or through alcohol. She was absolutely sober. She was completely sane. Yet in the quiet of night, these thoughts woke her up."

Dua Lipa Responds to NYT Ad and Accusations of Anti-Semitism for Supporting Palestinian Human Rights

The millennial vernacular of fatphobia

In her latest newsletter, Anne Helen Petersen, author of celebrity thinkpieces who's now transitioned into workplace writing, somewhat goes back to her roots and talks about the body standards that millennials faced during their youth.

The entry includes a trigger warning because it discusses body image, diet culture and disordered eating.

She talks about one particular issue of Seventeen Magazine that includes a non-model on the cover. Reader letters included some who praised it and some who said that she should have a better figure, which sent the contradictory message that her body was both "normal" ("thus desirable/obtainable") and also undesirable.

-She talks about how influential teen magazines like Seveteen, YM and Teen were, at least to white teens. These magazines included articles about things the reader should be worried about (e.g. cellulite), while simultaneously including articles about needing to let go of perfection.

-Mentions phrases that became engrained in many millennials' and younger gen-Xers' minds, like:

celebrity as a 'calorie negative food; the discourse around Britney's stomach; the phrases "muffin top" and "thigh gap"; how Kate Winslet was regarded as "chubby" andd Alicia Silverstone was dubbed "Fatgirl"; Bridget Jones' supposedly "undesirable" body; the Rachel Zoe aesthetic; the "Fat Monica" plotline on "Friends," etc. etc.

Key points behind the cut.

Disney in talks to buy DC Comics from WarnerMedia/Discovery merger.

- Disney is in talks to buy DC Comics since WarnerMedia and Discovery are now merging due to AT&T, parent company of WarnerMedia, looking to get completely out of entertainment.
- The new company, WarnerDiscovery, has given flexibility for a sell of both entities (DC Comics and DC Brand) to Walt Disney Company.
- No word yet if Disney's plan is to keep DC Comics/DC Brand as a separate entity or fuse it with Marvel into one giant brand. It does however close the gap for people to have Thor and Superman sharing pages (again) and an Avengers vs Justice League movie down the line.

Måneskin's Damiano David will take a voluntary drug test to demonstrate he was not sniffing coke

-France government has asked for italian's band Måneskin to be disqualified from Eurovision, accusing leader singer Damiano David of sniffing coke on air
-From the wide angle video, you can clearly see that both of his hands are visible while he's celebrating, he's looking down because a bandmate had just smashed down one glass (we also have a picture of the glass broken on the floor), also the table is way too far from his face

BTS performs their new hit single "Butter" at the BBMAs

BTS won 4 awards tonight (Top Social Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Duo/Group and Top Selling Song) because Army doesn't sleep. Tbh, I don't know what those awards mean and I don't care. What I DO care about is the fact that they performed "Butter" for the first time!

First time seeing the full choreo, baby!! Well. Sort of seeing. lmao. The lighting was shit at parts (like where they spell out ARMY) and tbh, the black outfits on dark background made it hard to see the dancing clearly sometimes. But we still got to see the little dance break where J-Hope slayed and all the choreo for the verses, so I'm still counting it as a win!

Also earlier today, they released a behind the scenes look at the making of the "Butter" mv.

Fake Canadian music festival gets trending because LBR we're not having any festivals any time soon

The nostalgia is strong and although Ontario is ramping up its vaccine numbers, music festivals are highly doubtful during these times. Weekend Box Office: Saw franchise joins billion dollar club

North America saw a quiet weekend at the box office as Spiral stayed on top for the second weekend with $4.5 million. While that might not be much to write about, it was a massive weekend for the Saw franchise as it reached the $1 billion mark globally. Its especially notable as its a franchise that has kept its production budgets incredibly small.

Wrath of Man ($2.9 million), Those Who Wish Me Dead ($1.8 million), Raya and the Last Dragon ($1.6 million) and Godzilla vs. Kong ($1.4 million) rounded out the top 5. On the new side, ONTD fav Toni Collette's Dream Horse took $844k.

Overseas, F9 debuted to a massive $162.4 million in 8 markets, $135 million alone coming from China. The film doesn't hit NA until the end of June.

Next weekend is a big one: A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella, the later which will also be available via D+'s Premier Access.
