Amber Heard reacts to Johnny Depp losing appeal to overturn "wife beater" ruling

Amber Heard shared a series of posts on social media, notably the verdict after Johnny Depp was denied an appeal after the court ruled he assaulted Heard on at least 12 occasions, thus making him a "wife beater".

The actress also reflected on wearing the same dress for the first time she reported Depp for domestic violence in 2016, to having to testify against him in Depp's UK libel lawsuit against The Sun in 2020: "One dress, four years apart. Sometimes it’s important to wear the same thing twice".

Depp still plans to fight Heard in court over another defamation lawsuit in VA that was delayed to 2022.

Rami Malek was Too Private for Rachel Bilson's Throwback Pic

While on Dax Shepard's damn podcast, Rachel Bilson talked about an awkward interaction with her high school friend, future Oscar winner Rami Malek.

"Rami was a good friend of mine," Bilson said. "We were the same crew. We did The Crucible together senior year. We were the leads in it together, all these things. We kind of kept in contact a little bit."

"I had posted a throwback of us from our senior trip to New York, Broadway. We were super-nerdy, just the dorkiest picture of both of us. But I throw it up 'cause it's funny, and I think it's so important to be able to make fun of yourself, and he had like a gold chain, and I'm like, 'Rami where'd you get the gold chain?' Whatever. So I'm just being funny, we were good friends."

She was told by Rami's stylist that he didn't appreciate the gesture, and Rachel was taken aback when even the creator of the O.C. criticized her: "It was right before the Oscars, and I remember [The O.C. creator] Josh Schwartz being like, 'You did him dirty! He's about to be nominated.' And I'm like, 'What do you mean? This was my friend; it's a funny picture.'"

After she took down the pic, she sent Rami an apology: "I wrote to him a really nice message, like, 'I'm so sorry. Go get the Oscar, you're doing amazing.' And I never hear anything back. I was super-bummed because he was always so nice and we were good friends, and I'm a big fan of not taking yourself seriously, especially at that level of fame and talent. But look, he wants to be super-respected, it's his thing, so I respected it. I took it down. I was just a little bummed at how it was handled."

A week later, Bilson checked her Instagram DMs and was surprised to find a message there from Malek. "But it wasn't like, 'Hey! How are you?' It was straight to 'I would really appreciate it if you take that down, I'm a really private person,'" she said. "I was like, 'Oh shit, okay."

Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Everyone Loves the McElroys, So Why Is Everyone Mad at the McElroys?

Today in "When I started listening to this podcast in Jan, I had no idea there was this much resentment brewing" news:

Well, let's step back. If you don't know who the McElroy family is, they're three brothers who have a podcast (multiple podcasts), the most prolilfic one is "My Brother, My Brother, and Me", and their second most prolific one in "The Adventure Zone", a DnD (Dungeons and Dragons) spinoff that adds their father. They're also in Trolls 2.

It's fun. I like them.

A lot of people are complaining about the latest entry in the series, "Graduation", with DM (Dungeon Master) "Your middlest brother", Travis:

  • Mainly rookie DMing mistakes.

  • Loooot of NPC chatter. Someone listed 86 different NPCs (Non-Playable Character)

  • There was an in-world accounting class the PCs (Player Character) had to take. I thought it was pretty funny but I get how that doesn't make for the best podcasting.

  • There's some *point point nudge nudge* look I'm being diverse winks, especially regarding one character and her floating magical wheelchair.

  • That nasty phrase, "performative wokeness" by fans rears its ugly head.

Also how fans (mainly white ones), aim to shut down legitimate criticism

  • The brothers themselves are aiming to do better - They worked with a diversity consultant for the Graphic Novels of the "Balance" arc - but when white fandom gets pissy, watch out.

  • "A fandom built on comfort will fight nail and tooth to stay comfortable, and the truth of the matter was early on, there just wasn't enough fans of color in the McElroy brand/fandom to really make their comfort count for a long time." - (Real good quote, anonymous POC (People of color). I like that)

I picked up the Balance Graphic novel on a whim in BAM in Jan and just fell in love with all of this. I'm a WOC and I do think they're genuinely trying to improve, but they're not infalliable and can be called out fairly. I can't say much about the DMing bc I'm new to DnD myself.

New Books Hitting Shelves This Week

In her powerful new book, critically acclaimed author Melissa Febos examines the narratives women are told about what it means to be female and what it takes to free oneself from them.

When her body began to change at eleven years old, Febos understood immediately that her meaning to other people had changed with it. By her teens, she defined herself based on these perceptions and by the romantic relationships she threw herself into headlong. Over time, Febos increasingly questioned the stories she’d been told about herself and the habits and defenses she’d developed over years of trying to meet others’ expectations. The values she and so many other women had learned in girlhood did not prioritize their personal safety, happiness, or freedom, and she set out to reframe those values and beliefs.

Blending investigative reporting, memoir, and scholarship, Febos charts how she and others like her have reimagined relationships and made room for the anger, grief, power, and pleasure women have long been taught to deny.

What's going on with Death on the Nile? Insiders weigh in

Variety addresses the recent decision by Disney studios to push the release of Death on the Nile, which stars *rmie H*mmer in a significant role, back to 2022. H*mmer is currently under investigation by the LAPD for sexual assault allegations.

To sum up:

  • The film is currently slated for release in theaters in Feb 2022, but a source close to the production says they won't be surprised if Disney decides to scrap a theatrical release and dump it on Hulu without fanfare.

  • Sources suspect Disney is just plating a waiting game to see how the allegations play out :/ But they also don't want to shelve the movie since so many other people worked on it.

  • H*mmer's role is significant enough that he cannot be cut and the film cannot be edited to remove most of his scenes.

  • The cast is so big that reshoots are impossible.

  • There isn't talk of CGI'ing his face or anything. Unfortunately.

  • In a hilarious twist, if Disney hadn't called director Kenneth Branagh back for reshoots of Artemis Fowl, this film would have been finished and released before the news about H*mmer hit.

  • It is speculated that his role in the other film he has completed, Taiki Waititi's Next Goal Wins, is a glorified cameo and can be cut.

Disney has declined to comment. They ended up with this film in their 20th Century Fox acquisition and I'm sure they wish they hadn't.

Adam Brody Revealed How He First Met Leighton Meester

They first met 15 years ago at a deli in LA when Josh Schwartz introduced the OC cast to the GG one

They later co-stared in The Oranges, and started dating one year after that

now they are married with two kids

"I was very attracted to her from the jump. She's a heavenly creature. [I] thought she was gorgeous. And even when we did the movie, there was chemistry there, but I was seeing someone."

"But I had no idea whether she was a good person or not. And, in fact, kind of assumed she probably wasn't for like the first handful of years that I didn't know her, just because, I don't know, Gossip Girl."

"She is the strongest, best person I know. She is my moral compass and North Star, and I just can't say enough good things about her character. It's crazy."

"She's never been rude to a single person in her life, except — and I give her credit for this — paparazzi, where I'm too self-conscious."

"People will try to get her to sign some sexy old photo or something that aren't fans but they pretend to be fans...It's sort of a bottom feeding thing...She has no problem being like, ‘You can hate me. I don't care.'"

The director of Britney Spears' documentary "Stages" speaks out

-In a year that is slowly but surely becoming a reckoning regarding the way media and society overall treated female celebrities in the 2000s, the director of Britney's own 2002 concert doc entitled "Stages: Three Days in Mexico" spoke to Vanity Fair about how the little known documentary came to be.

-The documentary was an outside pitch directly to Britney's team who greenlit it. However the label had not been informed leading to last-minute negotiations and a scramble to get any products that contradicted Britney's sponsorships at the time out of any shots. They also insisted that she would not be filmed smoking or drinking.

-The director was saddened by the on-going media circus around Britney and decided not to do the customary confessional interviews as scheduled. When they did eventually meet up for an interview months later, Britney told her that she was interested in going to NYU, taking belly dancing lessons, and doing more acting especially playing a "crazy young girl...Someone who has issues".

-The documentary was eventually given a low-key release in 2002 as a part of a tour photo book which has been out of print for a while.

Celebs React: The Murder Trial of Derek Chauvin, Day 2

Today was day two of the murder trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd last year.

Highlights (some details are very distressing):

Six witnesses were interviewed, including 4 minors.

The defense repeatedly tried to paint former MMA fighter and security guard Donald Williams as an "angry" bystander to which he replied that he was controlled and professional.

From then 17 year old Darnella Frazier who filmed death of George Floyd: "There have been nights I stayed up apologizing & apologizing to George Floyd for not doing more & not physically interacting & not saving his life. But it’s like not what I should have done, it’s what he should have done."

A 9 year old witness said she saw Chauvin put more weight of George Floyd's neck as he and the crowd pleaded with Chauvin to stop. "The ambulance had to push him off him. They asked him nicely to get off him. He still stayed on."

Off-duty firefighter and EMT Genevieve Hansen testified that she pleaded with the police to let her administer aid and she felt 'totally distressed' that she was not allowed to help him. After Floyd was taken away she called the officers a bitch, "I got quite angry after Mr. Floyd was loaded into the ambulance & there was no point in trying to reason with them anymore because they had just killed somebody," and stayed at the scene because she was concerned they would retaliate against the witnesses who were mostly POC. The judge got mad at her for arguing with the defense council and ended the day's session.

The Office Called Out for Problematic Portrayal of Asian Women by Guest Star Kat Ahn

Season 3 episode from 2006 of 'The Office', "A Benihana Christmas,"
It features a scene with two Asian American waitresses from the titular restaurant accompanying Michael (Steve Carell) and Andy (Ed Helms) back to Dunder Mifflin for a holiday party. In addition to referring to Benihana as "Asian Hooters," Michael also marks one of the waitresses' arms with a Sharpie so that he'll be able to tell them apart.

Kat Ahn, who guest-starred as one of the two Asian American waitresses, opened up about the situation nearly 15 years later, detailing how her excitement to appear on the series quickly crumbled once she realized how her character was "just there to be the joke. You're told to shut up and be grateful. Actors have no power until they become a star,"

The episode has also affected her personal life, as she also explained how the Office joke would continue to come up for years to come.

In January, she detailed how the "problematic" way the series depicted Asian women.
"The storyline with myself and the other Asian American actress is that we were the 'uglier' version of the actresses at the Benihana... Also that all Asian people look alike; we're one big monolith; and we're just one big, walking stereotype without any personality or individuality, which is problematic."
