Nike executive resigns after involvement in resale scandal in sneaker community

Joe Hebert, a 19-year-old Portlander dropped out of University of Oregon to work on the sneaker resale business. Hebert coordinated a “cook group,” a private channel of sneakerheads who use automated scripts, or “bots,” and insider information to gain an advantage in securing limited-release sneakers at point of release. Employing his cook group to purchase $132,000 worth of Yeezy sneakers flipping them for hundreds of thousands dollars. This purchase was made with an American Express card that belongs to his mom, who happens to be Ann Hebert, an executive at Nike for 25 years, who’d been in charge of Nike’s push to sell directly to consumers.

Hebert plugged his cook group, which cost $50 per month to join, as a way to invest in yourself. "I'm totally willing to dump literally all of my money into a shoe. I'm not gonna go home with an L."

The sneaker game is akin to traditional finance terms: flipping sneakers is now arbitrage. Bundling lower-tier “bricks” into tranches. If sneakers were stocks, Hebert was a trader, and his mom worked on the New York Stock Exchange. There are previous examples of Nike suing former employees for “insider trading” and if sneakers were regulated financial instruments, he’d likely be under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The scandal has been such among sneaker heads, because ever since the 00’s, when sneakers started to soar, they have been calling out these behaviors, prompting even mainstream outlets to pick this story.

The archetype of a reseller according to many in the sneaker community is of a kid that's privileged, whose parents have money, and are able to kind of jump in this just to make money and not really participate in the culture. Originally considered a blight in the community, since they have always been around, but since sneakers made it into pop culture and mainstream, resellers have grown, contributing to the artificial scarcity created and controlled by the sneaker companies themselves.

“This is the Supreme model of keeping things super limited on the supply side.” said Nick Engvall, sneaker creator and consultant, who’s been in the industry for 15 years. Part of the reason that this really bubbled up and became a huge issue is because of pictures of Hebert posing on social media buying shoes that just aren't available anywhere, and the quantities that you would never see without having a very close connection to the company or direct access to when and where these products are going to be available.

Originally a Nike spokesperson insisted that Hebert made the necessary disclosures about her son’s business, West Coast Streetwear, in 2018. However, she has resigned from Nike days after the article was published, abruptly leaving the company following the reports about her son operating a business reselling sneakers and using a credit card in her name.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been surviving on inheritance from princess Diana

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah for their first joint interview since stepping back from the royal family. The interview contained many bombshells already shared here.

Later, the subject of Harry's mother came up, with Oprah asking how he thinks Princess Diana would have felt about these ordeals. "I think she would feel very angry with how this has panned out, and very sad... My biggest concern was history repeating itself," he added. "And what I was seeing was history repeating itself, but far more dangerous because you add race in, you add social media in."

Harry revealed that he and Meghan never would have been able to step back from the royal family after being financially cut off by the royals, had Diana not left him an inheritance before her death. Harry and William were both left around $8 million by their mother. The money was invested and gathered interest, with Harry inheriting $13 million on his 30th birthday in 2014.

Harry believes Diana had a sense that he may come to rely on the money after her own highly publicized struggles with the royal family and tabloid media.

Have you inherited, ONTD?

Jeangu Macrooy is back with The Netherlands's 2021 eurovision entry 'Birth Of A New Age'

Unable to perform last year due to the pandemic Jeangu is back with a new song for this years EuroVision. Since The Netherlands won in 2019 Jaengu is automatically placed for the finals with 'Birth Of A New Age'

[The lyrics]
Skin as rich as a starlit night
Your rhythm is rebellion
Deep currents running in the rivers of your eyes
Your rhythm is rebellion
They spat on your crown And they poisoned your ground
Your rhythm is rebellion They burned your heroes at the stake
But your voice will echo all their names
This ain’t the end, no! It’s the birth of a new age
YU NO MAN BROKO MI (You can’t break me)

Soul blazing like a hurricane
Your rhythm is rebellion
Spirit roaring wild like untamed flames
Your rhythm is rebellion
They buried your gods They imprisoned your thoughts Your rhythm is rebellion They tried to drain you of your faith But you are the rage that melts the chains This ain’t the end, no! It’s the birth of a new age
We are the fruit Adorning the legacy Of every forgotten revolutionary Born in resilience
Proud like a lion We are the birth of a new age

YU NO MAN BROKO MI (You can’t break me)
MI NA AFU SENSI (I’m half a cent)

[Last years song]

Kim's Convenience Ending After 5 Seasons

Text from the tweet image:

"Authenticity of storytelling is at the center of the success of Kim's Convenience. At the end of production on Season 5, our two co-creators confirmed they were moving on to other projects. Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special. Kim's Convenience has meant so much to our cast, writers, crew, and audiences around the world. Despite the restrictions and complications of shooting during the pandemic, Season 5 is our finest season to date. It's been a privilege and a very great pleasure to work with the Kim's family of gifted writers and performers for the last five years. Thank you to our fans for the love and support you've given this show."

Season 5 is currently airing (in Canada), with 6 episodes left.

Andrew Phung, who plays Kimchee, posted a really lovely thread thanking everyone who worked on the show

‘Respect Shakira’ trends on Twitter as ‘prostitute banner’ emerges before PSG play Barcelona

Shakira has been supported on social media after widely shared images purportedly showed fans of French football giants Paris Saint-Germain with a banner insinuating she was a prostitute.

She is the long-time girlfriend of footballer Gerard Pique, whose Barcelona team take on French giants PSG in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash in Paris this week.

One of the banners translated as ‘Shakira at La Jonquera’, referring to a town on Spain’s Catalan border with France which is well known for its prostitution.

The derogatory images soon spread across Twitter, and when coupled with March 8 being International Women’s Day, led to a wave of support from Shakira fans.

Bruno Mars speaks about cultural appropriation accusations

Bruno Mars has spoken out about the cultural appropriation claims he has faced during his career.
The musician is of Filipino, Puerto Rican and Ashkenazi Jewish descent.
He has been accused of appropriating Black music through his work.

“I would say you can’t find an interview where I am not talking about the entertainers that have come before me. The only reason why I’m here is because of James Brown, Prince, Michael [Jackson] – that’s the only reason why I’m here. I’m growing up as a kid watching Bobby Brown, saying, ‘OK, if that’s what it takes to make it then I gotta do the running man, I gotta learn how to do the moonwalk’. That’s it. This music comes from love and if you can’t hear that, then I don’t know what to tell you. What’s the point if we, as musicians, can’t learn from the guys who came before us? Why did they do it? I hope later on down the road there’s gonna be a band that’s taking what we did and flipping that and freaking that and putting their own spin on it, because if they don’t then what was the point of us doing this?”

Lizzo on What It's Really Like Living 'Obese': 'My Bank Account Is So Fat'

Lizzo was asked how she deals "with being obese every day"

"I wake up into my obese bed. I have to get like a king bed because I'm so obese. I put on my obese Louis Vuitton house slippers, and I walk into my massive, obese bathroom and I just stare into my wall-to-wall, obese mirror and lather myself in the most obese, expensive oils and creams, and -- oh, god -- I walk into my obese, gorgeous, mid-century modern kitchen, and by the time I've made it into my kitchen, I've already made another obese million dollars. My bank account is so fat. My bank account is so obese, and, like, I tried to put it on a diet but she's just so stubborn, like, she won't listen."

Steven Yeun for GQ Magazine- Happy Monday!

Steven Yeun is back, doing a sexy photoshoot for GQ magazine. He also gives yet another amazing interview, which is worth the read.

  • Steven is big into primal astrology, which is designed to help people “discover far, far more about your path in life than was previously possible” by combining their Eastern and Western zodiac signs along with “past lives” and “karmic balancing.”

  • Regarding the Golden Globes putting American film in the foreign language category: "I wasn't surprised. I have no desire to try to massage both sides in this situation, but it really just comes down to the idea that rules and institutions can never capture real life. And it can never really understand that what builds a place like America and what makes it great is all the people that are contributing to it. If this is the thing that helps to expand these institutions and rules? Cool."

  • The Walking Dead blew up so much that he had to stop leading worship at his church because parishioners kept asking for selfies.

  • Glenn's path on TWD was...kind of racist: "There's ‘good’ and ‘bad.’ But I felt I had expanded beyond that and I was internally frustrated. I felt like I was servicing a concept of goodness, as opposed to engaging with Glenn's humanity...[Spoiler (click to open)][I wanted Glenn to be] more conflicted, to have the same opportunities for interiority as the other characters. Glenn has evil thoughts, I'm sure. I remember season three, when Glenn thinks that the governor assaulted Maggie, and I remember I campaigned hard. I was like, ‘Yo! Give me a story line where I go to kill this guy.’ (That didn't happen, and it was the first moment that Yeun knew his time on the series was coming to an end) To be quite honest, as an Asian person, sometimes accessing your own humanity when you're outside in the world is not that easy. Because you're usually kind of just shrunken down into your label. To not have that in my real life and to not have that in my show life was frustrating. And so I think it just started this journey of just, like...dude, I can't. I've got to feel full. I've got to feel real.”

  • Steven now goes for roles where he can examine his darker side instead of playing a label.

  • He loves singing (and sings very well). His favorite worship song is “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone).” He's also rediscovered his faith in God in recent years.
