Sony Sells 'The Mitchells vs. The Machines' to Netflix

Today in "Finally, Good naming conventions return!" news, Sony Pictures Animation ("Peter Rabbit", something with a Spider-man) has sold it's long-gestating Lord and Miller movie "Connected" (Formerly known as "The Mitchells vs. The Machines") to Netflix (Who has changed the name back to "The Mitchells vs. The Machines", which is WAY BETTER AND I AM GLAD).

Sony had planned to release the film theatrically on March 12 before Netflix acquired worldwide rights.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said they want to grow to challenge Disney in the animation department. They got a long way to go, but a Lord and Miller production will certainly help them out.

The trailer came out months ago, you can go find it (probably under 'Connected'). No word on when it'll actually release.

I REFUSED to call this Connected so I'm glad my personal vendetta is vindicated!!!

Indie Film Release Guide: January 22nd [An ONTD Original]

ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

If you like foreign films, then boy, is this your week! Most of this week’s releases are in a language other than English, and several are International Feature Film submissions for the 2021 Oscars. This week is a little light on new releases from streaming services, but January is typically a slow new release month, so that’s not terribly unusual.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. All films listed will be available at their respective sources on Friday unless otherwise noted. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: January 15th, January 8th, and January 1st.

Superman & Lois trailer

In SUPERMAN & LOIS, after years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world’s most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, “Teen Wolf”) and comic books’ most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Grimm”), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever - dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society. Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, “Little Fires Everywhere”) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, “The Peanuts Movie”) could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, “Entourage”), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark’s first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, “Graceland”). The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, “Wander Darkly”). Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, “Nip/Tuck”) looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, “All American”) enters their lives.

ONTD Original: What the Fuck was a Quibi - Part 4

Oh Quibi, we hardly new ye. Quibi’s October shutdown came as no surprise to anyone, and since then things have been fairly quiet for the would-be content giant - it appears they are indeed going gently into that good night. But recent rumblings about the ~$750 M cash on hand they still have, from their original ~$1.8 B budget, and news of a sale of their content has resparked my interest in this little disaster.

Join me for what is probably the final part of the Quibi saga on ONTD, unless Jeffrey Katzenberg decides to start lighting money on fire in a new way. If you are new to this flop, be sure to check out parts 1, 2, and 3!

Steven Yeun Interviews and Photoshoot Post

Steven Yeun has done an interview and photoshoot for Backstage magazine for Minari's Oscar race.

  • When he started in the industry, only John Cho was really mainstream. Steven is hoping with Parasite's big Oscar win, more doors will open.

  • Regarding this year’s Golden Globes classifying Minari as a foreign film (rendering it ineligible for their best picture prize), Steven says: "We’re chipping away at that,..one particular thing I think means well, and works—I’m not trying to bash it—is the phrase ‘specificity is universality.’ I know the intention of that phrasing, which is: Tell it specific and tell it true, and that will unlock the universal. But it puts the labor of essentialized authenticity onto it. And then you’re busy trying to police it for its cultural authenticity…. That still puts the onus on the creator to explain themselves to the audience. [I prefer:] Humanity is universality."

  • The main way he was able to prepare for his role in Minari: "The journey of Jacob for me, personally, was understanding I am my father. Yes, my father and I are separate people who lived in different eras and had different conditions. But the core feelings are still the same: of a family, and what you must do as a father, and the desires to uphold your family, and the feelings of your own ego that you must contend with, and the inner connectivity of the whole family unit. It was really humbling to understand that there is no real divide."

  • He's learned to be more personal with his performances rather than to overanalyze and over-prepare.

As with every Steven interview, it's worth a read.

Non-Black DaniLeigh Drops Song Called "Yellow Bone," Gets Dragged, Gets Defensive

    • Earlier today Dominican singer[citation needed] DaniLeigh—who is not Black—released Yellow Bone, "a song for [her] light skin baddies" and, incidentally, the worst song you'll hear today, for a variety of reasons.

    • She was promptly dragged by Black Twitter for releasing her colorist anthem and fetishizing light skin, as well as for her history of blackfishing and using the N-word.

    • In response to the backlash, she posted a series of defensive tweets about haters, one of which included the standard "sorry if I offended you" nonapology.

    • DaniLeigh is currently dating rapper and violent batterer DaBaby, who responded to her Instagram post with "🟡🟡🟡." Some have suggested that the song is aimed at his daughter's mother, Meme, a dark-skinned Black woman.

    • OP isn't entirely clear but apparently DaBaby keeps cheating on each of them with the other and/or going back and forth between them?

    • The two women have been subtweeting each other for months, I guess, most notably in December when DaniLeigh confirmed her on-again relationship with DaBaby in an Instagram post captioned, "My baby❤ idc."

The Girls are STILL Fighting! Sabrina Carpenter Responds to "drivers license" with "Skin"

Another week, another single being dropped about this Disney Channel love triangle. Beginning of the month, 17 year old Olivia Rodrigo released her smash hit single, "drivers license" which caused a lot of people to speculate that it was about her HSMTMTS costar Joshua Bassett (Click here to read the ONTD Original about it). Last week, 20 years old, Joshua Bassett released his single (which I think is unrelated? I don't know I didn't listen to it), and now his girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter (21 years old!!!!) is chiming in with a pointed track called "Skin" and it's not a good look.

While fans dispute that "Sabrina's been working on it for a long time!!! It's not about Olivia!" It's clear Sabrina took offense to the song that barely throws any shade about her compared to her actual boyfriend who was dating a minor!!!!

Sabrina writes in the first verse: "Maybe we could have been friends/If I met you in another life/Maybe then we could pretend/There’s no gravity in the words we write/Maybe you didn’t mean it/Maybe blonde was the only rhyme" and the lines, "Don’t drive yourself insane". Sounds like a call out to Olivia Rodrigo's line in "drivers license" where she sings, "And you're probably with that blonde girl/who always made me doubt/She's so much older than me/she's everything I'm insecure about."

Though the song sounds like Sabrina is extending an olive branch. OP is doubtful about it since her BFF Joey King (21 years old) wrote and then deleted this shady Instagram comment which only shows the kind of people they are.

Influencer Kristen Gray and girlfriend deported from Indonesia

    Continuation to this post

Kristen Gray sparked backlash following tweets on her "elevated lifestyle", promoting to foreigners to migrate to Bali during a pandemic, exploiting workarounds and not paying local taxes, while plugging a $30 e-book to her over 11k followers.

Indonesian authorities have since accused her of spreading information that could "unsettle" the public by encouraging digital nomads to move to Bali under legal loopholes while the southeast Asian country has strict policies in place surrounding public health and tourism in the pandemic. She is also accused of working without a business visa.

But Gray says she is being targeted because of her being LGBT.

Kristen and her girlfriend are being held at an immigration detention facility and will be deported as soon as a USA bound flight is available.

They are being banned from entering back into the country for at least 6 months.
