Lainey weighs in on Jessica Mulroney's racism against Sasha Exeter

  • A primer on Sasha Exeter/Jessica Mulroney: Mulroney is a Canadian fashion heiress/stylist married into a Canadian political family. For absolutely no reason at all she attacked and bullied small time Toronto instagram influencer Sasha Exeter after Exeter encouraged white influencers to support Black Lives Matter. Exeter went public with the bullying which led to many of Mulroney's endorsements being dropped. Even after "apologizing" Mulroney sent Exeter a DM threatening to sue her

  • In her piece Lainey talks about how Exeter had to frame her call out to cater to white people by saying Mulroney wasn't a racist but by then going on to show how her actions were racist.

  • Lainey talks about how she works with CTV/Ben Mulroney and even though Lainey herself is influential she is still scared to cross the Mulroneys because she does not have family affluence or connections to back her up if she is fired or something goes wrong

  • The gossip in Toronto is Jessica Mulroney still doesn't believe she did anything wrong

  • The Mulroney's are keeping lists of everyone who crossed them and Lainey knows of at least one email sent to someone who LIKED Sasha's post telling that person to think about whose side they were on

  • Lainey knows that retribution is coming as soon as the world at large stops paying attention because the Mulroneys are still influential in the tiny incestuous pool of the Toronto arts scene

News Roundup: A Discovery of Witches Out "Soon" (Read: November/December)

The goofy, oddly addictive Twilight ripoff that time has forgot, A Discovery of Witches, is definitely coming out with a Season 2... at some point.

The show, which began filming in June of 2019, began post-production in September of 2019, and wrapped filming in January of 2020, still doesn't have a trailer or a complete cast list, but luckily it does have a leaky lead actress who let fans know on her personal Instagram that it would probably be out closer to November or December but "definitely this year". Which feels like the most technical of technicalities.

She also let fans know via an Instagram Live a few weeks ago that, Covid permitting, Season 3 would probably start filming in September of 2020.

tl;dr it's an excuse to remind you that this show exists, and is probably definitely maybe coming out at some point. Anyone still interested in watching?

Boomers vs millennials is out, now it’s millennials vs gen z

For the first part of the rise of the Internet, boomers and millennials have been at it for their dissenting points of view in life, economy, environment, disconnection with technology and current events and basically everything.

But now that most millennials are way into adulthood territories, the battle has displaced the boomers as rivals and now are gen z individuals dragging millennials for similar things that millennials criticized boomers just a few years ago. Millennials are born between 1981 and 1996, like me, and Gen Z was born between 1997 and 2012.

New it social media, TikTok is where young people are taking jabs at millennials, particularly making fun for the love for wine, Buzzfeed quizzes, and inability to do basic adult tasks. Other topics are outrage for disrespecting their Harry Potter houses while living in overpriced shoeboxes, overpriced dining and food items (avocado toast) and inability to move past old times gone (the 90’s), with some calling for millennials to be cancelled for their inability to have changed things. The posts have since gone viral on other social media platforms.

The millennial generation happened during hard times in the economy, with most becoming young adults during a financial crisis. The Occupy Wall Street movement seemed like a promising bid for change, but fizzled out without much of an impact and social and environmental problems have been on the rise, so seeking comfort in childhood memories while knowing most to be ill prepared to be adults, was a natural response. But some millennials have not taken these criticisms lightly and have been accused by gen z people of turning into their boomer parents.

Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined . . . until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing—and too earth-shattering in its implications—to be forgotten. In these pages, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it. Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and, inevitably, of savagery and death.

Yet it is also far more than that.

Because if what Kate Holland saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us—and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity.

Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it—and like none you’ve ever read before.

Comic Book Artist Cameron Stewart exposed as a predator

Comic book artist and writer Cameron Stewart has been exposed on Twitter of being a predator who groomed young women.

Artist and model Aviva Maï exposed him last night on Twitter, stating that he flirted with her beginning at age 16 while he was in his 30s, even going so far as to mention that he was sad he didn't get a chance to date her.

Artist/writer Kate Leth and actress Natasha Negovanlis both backed up Aviva's claim by stating they also went through something similiar. Convention organizer Andrea Demonakos stated the Toronto comic scene widely knew of Cameron's predatory behavior and chased him out of town. Leth commented further that he told her left Toronto for Berlin because he "burned through all the girls" there.

Cameron hasn't made any comments but like a coward has locked his Twitter and Instagram profiles.

Cameron has worked on books like Batgirl, Catwoman, and Motor Crush. His Batgirl and Motor Crush partner, Babs Tarr, has publicly supported Aviva.

ontd original: popular tropes in 90s sitcoms

I have wanted to do this for an oddly long time for some reason. There were a lot of tropes in the 90s that permeated their sitcoms. I'm not sure if shows these days have the same shclocky, trope-y plotlines (In the case of #3, probably not?), but let's go back way, way, way back in the day to the 90s.

The Ones about Poor Spending Habits

  • Sister, Sister ("Mo' Credit, Mo Problems")

  • Moesha ("Credit Card")

SYNOPSIS: Kid gets a credit card. Goes over limit. Gets into trouble.

The Sister, Sister one always made me a little sad at the end. The girls are stranded in a 'bad part of town', and the gangster that helps them gets beaten up for his trouble.

When could teens get credit cards anyway? Is this strictly a 90s thing? Do they get them these days?

The Ones about Drugs (Usually 'The Mari-ju-wana', sometimes 'diet pills', alcohol, speed, or 'caffine pills')
Collapse )

I could have added more (abandonment by fathers, guns, school trips), but why not leave it to you? After all, I've not seen every 90s sitcom ever.

ONTD Reacts to... FBE being another toxic youtube workplace!

2020 is not done. This time it's coming for FBE (Fine Brothers Entertainment) along with their React and Try Not To channels.
The full details are under the cut but here's a quick tldr:

  • Shane Dawson worked with the Fine Brothers (Benny and Rafi) 10 years ago to make a Degrassi parody. Shane Dawson wore blackface to portray Liberty and Alli. One of the Fine Brothers wore blackface to portray Jimmy and Connor.

  • On June 4th, FBE posted a "This Is My Story" video featuring their black reactors to share their stories.

  • On June 10th, Reactor, Kennedy, posted on her Twitter about how she was made aware of the blackface videos and how she sent the company an email before the "This Is My Story" video because before when she shared her story she received death threats. The company did not respond so she left the channel. June 10th was also the last day a video was posted on any of the FBE channels.

  • On June 11th, a "message" from the founders (Benny and Rafi) was posted onto Twitter.

  • Between June 10th and 11th, former staff began speaking out about the toxic culture of FBE.

  • On June 15th (PST)/June 16th (EST), the CEO (not Benny and Rafi) finally addressed the situation.

Collapse )

As a result of all of this, multiple reactors have stated they're leaving or done with FBE. There have been 0 new videos on any of the FBE channels. Their subscriber count has remained 20.1M on their main channel all week. Seems like their was more outrage when they tried to do React World. Of course, more is on Twitter as some of the tweets are threads.

The Killers premiered their latest single, “My Own Soul’s Warning.” It is by far their catchiest single since probably “The Man,” but in a different sound/way.

The art for the single was painted by Thomas Blackshear, who, along with the band, received the blessing of the Crow Tribe of Indians for its use.

“Artists living across the world inspired by our people and way of life, is a total honour and true testament of the knowledge our people share. During this unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as well as the injustice of police brutality protests around the world. Our people recognise the need to also help keep our spirits positive,” a statement from the Crow Tribe of Indians read.

The Best & Worst Horror-Movie Screams Broken Down By Pro Acting Coach | Good & Bad Acting

Acting coach Scott Sedita critiques some of Hollywood's most famous — and infamous — screams. He reviewed horror-movie screams ranging from great to mediocre to downright terrible, breaking down what went right and wrong in the actors' performances.

There's a lot to pick apart in the screaming performances of Hollywood actors, whether it's an Oscar winner like Nicolas Cage delivering his now-infamous scream in "The Wicker Man" or Paris Hilton making her horror debut in "House of Wax." So, what separates the highs from the lows? With examples from "Psycho," "Scream," "Halloween," "The Shining," "Jaws," and "Frankenstein," Sedita analyzed why certain screams resonate with audiences while others fall flat. He pointed out techniques that great actors use to make their screams look and sound terrifying, as well as the common mistakes that can make an on-camera scream feel forced or unnatural.

According to Sedita, the effectiveness of a cinematic scream has everything to do with where the scream is coming from in the body — namely whether the actor is screaming from their chest or their throat. Rhythm and timing are also key, especially for horror-movie scenes that require a lot of screaming. Sedita deconstructed the most famous screaming moments of celebrated scream queens in the slasher genre, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Susan Backlinie, and Vera Farmiga; and he compared the hits and misses of horror B-movie screams, from Darren Ewing's viral moment in the comedy-horror "Troll 2" to Candy Clark's campy shrieking in cult favorite "The Blob."

'The Bold And The Beautiful' to Use Blow-Up Dolls and Actors Spouses for Love Scenes

  • In March for the first time in 33 years the show had to shut down production and begin airing repeats due to COVID-19.

  • Production begins again this Thursday.

  • They tried to cut all of the kisses but it wasn't working storywise. So they had to come up with creative solutions.

  • Preserving those passionate on-screen kisses will involve a bit of creative camera work, and the magic of editing. Each actor will go through the motions separately, performing inches away from the camera.

  • [Brad Bell, head writer and executive producer] says he plans to use a combination of stand-ins and blow-up dolls. Actors’ spouses, who test negative for the novel coronavirus, will join their partners for love scenes that involve touching. Life-like dummies will fill in for more intimate on-camera work.

  • “We have some life-like blow up dolls that have been sitting around here for the past 15 years, that we’ve used for various other stories — (like) when people were presumed dead,” says Bell. “We’re dusting off the dolls and putting new wigs and make-up on them and they'll be featured in love scenes.”

Noname Spreads Knowledge & Truth and Boots Riley and J. Cole Say Things of Varying Usefulness

First, on Monday, Noname sat down alongside Boots Riley, formerly of the Coup and director of Sorry to Bother You, for an interview with Khury Peterson-Smith for Haymarket Books. The Tomboy Trope, Explained

The Tomboy. She loves traditionally masculine activities and would rather wear baggy clothes instead of dresses or skirts. Confident with the tendency to be headstrong or impulsive, she doesn’t cave to the pressure to conform, which has made her a strong role model for women and girls who feel like they don’t fit in. But is our culture outgrowing this character? In this video, we unpack the Tomboy in film and TV and why this trope might soon become irrelevant today.
