Pussy Riot Say Russian Police Shut Down Video Shoot, Citing “Gay Propaganda”

Pussy Riot says Russian authorities stormed a shoot for its new music video citing charges of "gay propaganda" and extremism.

According to Pussy Riot, the police shut off the electricity for the rest of the day at the studio, Lenfilm, to prevent the group from finishing production of the video, which included 150 women and LGBTQ activists. Authorities also allegedly prohibited the group from bringing in a generator to restore power.

“We lost $15k on the video production today,” the group writes, “because of the absurd ‘gay propaganda’ law, and we’ll be thankful if you share this info and/or be kind enough to help us to raise the money to make this video happen anyway.”

ONTD Roundup

Hermione holds Ron

Ah yes, the very-too-soon early predictions for the 2021 Oscars

I know, I know, everyone's still enjoying the Parasite glow (as am I). But the award season is finally over (somehow a short one made it feel like forever?). Whatever.

After the poor predictions from last year (though Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Little Women, and Rocketman did win something, and The Irishman and Bombshell were at least nominated), let's hope that the acting nominees have a bit more... diversity to them. Though it may be the year of the musical and yes, musical biopics.

-- Film adaptation of The Prom, from Ryan Murphy, starring Meryl Streep, James Corden (why), Andrew Rannells and Nicole Kidman
-- The remake of West Side Story from Steven Spielberg
-- Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights adaptation
-- Spike Lee's war drama Da 5 Bloods starring Chadwick Boseman
-- David Fincher's Mank starring Gary Oldman as "Citizen Kane" screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz
-- Ron Howard's Hillbilly Elegy seeing the return of Oscars' favorite bridesmaids Amy Adams and Glenn Close
-- Denis Villeneuve's Dune will probably be the big tech movie of the year, also starring Timothee Chalamet
-- Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch with its endless list of all-star and Oscar-nominated/winning cast
-- Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 starring Oscar winners Eddie Redmayne & Mark Rylance
-- Christopher Nolan's Tenet could be another big tech one (maybe even a great movie too), starring John David Washington
-- Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Robert De Niro
-- The King Richard biopic about Serena & Venus, starring Will Smith
-- Guillermo del Toro's remaking of Nightmare Alley reuniting Carol stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as well as Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman and Richard Jenkins
-- Ridley Scott's The Last Duel - out this Christmas - starring Adam Driver and Matt Damon (oh is this that one with the fucked up plot?)
-- Joel Coen's adaptation of Macbeth starring the one and only Denzel Washington in the title role, and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth
-- Aretha Franklin biopic Respect starring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson
-- Academy may fill its LGBTQ+ quota with Ammonite starring Kate Winslet & Saoirse Ronan
-- Anthony Hopkins in The Father, which is already getting amazing early reviews from Sundance

God, another year, another sausage fest.

New trailer for 'The Hunt'

The most talked about movie of the year is the one nobody has seen … yet.

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don't know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.

In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.

From Jason Blum, the producer of Get Out and The Purge series, and Damon Lindelof, creator of the HBO series Watchmen and co-creator of the TV series Lost, comes a timely and provocative new satirical thriller that has already ignited a national conversation. Now, it’s time to decide for yourself.

Rebecca Black's "Friday" is 9 years old

Rebecca Black took to Twitter to commemorate 9 years since the release that made her a celebrity (?), by posting a pic of herself and a screenshot of her notes app.

The song became (in)famous and viral for the shallow lyrics and ridiculous accompanying video. With original reception being highly negative, but it has since become a cult classic, covered by numerous artists and comedians becoming of one of the best examples of viral content and memes since the advent of social media.

The original video was removed from YouTube on June 16, 2011, due to legal disputes between ARK Music and Black. Having already amassed more than 166 million views. Since the growth in popularity of the song and video, there have been numerous parody videos and remixes.

[Joins live from NH, she can’t see who is talking, only audio]. Saw $3M surge in donations after Friday debate. Joy wants to know what Amy is doing to get in the top 3. Amy says she’s been doing this that and the other. Gives more push to why she’s running and while we’ve got to get T45 out of the WH. Talks about her parents and their roles and how hard she’s worked to get where she is. Joy mentions threats and hecklers re/Romney and Biden, asks if Amy has sensed that on the trail. Amy says when T45 is who he is, this is the atmosphere you get. She praises Romney and Doug Jones (D-AL) for their tough decisions on the Senate vote in spite of political fallout. Moves to talking about being able to build a coalition. She feels there needs to be a patriotism check on that guy. Gives some campaign talking points, fighting for everyone.

Bari asks about Amy going after Buttigieg, and then Biden put out a blistering ad, vs going after Sanders. Amy says she’s the only one on the debate stage who raised their hand with the Socialist label, even though she likes Sanders, she doesn’t agree with his healthcare. Tells her 59 is the new 38 joke, touts her campaign successes before, and her polling despite less money. Meghan says Bloomberg is trying to buy the election*. Amy says people don’t look at T45 and say they want a guy who is richer. Says she can’t beat him on the ad stage, but she’d win on the debate state. *Joy says Bloomberg isn’t buying the election [thank you, buying an election is literally paying people for votes and is illegal].

Sunny brings up black support, quotes poll from last month. Mentions prosecutor history. More than 2 dozen police involved killings during her tenure. When she was county attorney, believes there is systemic racism, used drug court to reduce jail sentencing and diversified the staff. Lists some other examples. As for black support, had strong support at home, so she feels she had surrogates who will help getting her message out, and how people getting to know her will gain her support. Sunny brings up case of 16 yr old and the problems with that investigation, gives details. Says the past evidence and new evidence should be brought forward and re-investigated. First protect the innocent and convict the guilty, the victim was 11 yr old shot and killed doing her homework, but if new evidence has come to light then it should be reviewed again. [Sunny seems to want to litigate it on the show, regardless of Amy answer, what else is she supposed to say]. Meghan asks about pro life and pro choice. Amy says she’s strongly pro choice, always has been. There are pro life Democrats and they should be brought in not shut out.

DiCaprio’s "The Beach" predicted destruction of places due to influencer culture

The 2000 film semmed like another cliché about Westerners traveling to Southeast Asia on idealized notions of adventure, but the message of it is getting new resonance on today's new influencer culture.

Local environmental effects that corrupt small towns, destruction of beaches as content-hunters and "digital nomads" keep looking for more incredible and adventurous destinations to showcase their photos through our feeds, disregarding lives of locals and wreaking havoc on those locations for the sake of aspirational stories.

For example The Beach's own beach, Maya Bay has been subjected to modifications since the filming was taking place, and since the opening of the movie to this day, the beach has resented the effects of an increased touristic flow, as eroded sand, cut bushes and several other consequences have taken place, or the constant power boats that have killed reefs and fish and scared off local birds, not only on this spot but in several other Instagram-popular destinations.

Overtourims in many of these places predated social media, but in the age of travel vlogs, geotags and influencers, these stories are more common around all the world. Social media expedite the problem, promting huge amounts of interest in a destination in a very short ammount of time, these destinations are not prepared for the onslaught of travelers that are not usually respectful of the nature and the locals.

Publications like Condé Nast have questioned wheter the geotag feature on Instagram should be eliminated in order to preserve these places, if only for a little longer, with even locals now pleading tourists to not geotag locations. Making everybody more aware of the potential consequences of posting these data to social media.

Interview With Bruce W. Smith (Co-Director of Hair Love, Creator of The Proud Family)

Bruce W. Smith is an animator, director, and producer who has been working in animation for decades. In addition to co-directing the Oscar-winning Hair Love, he is the creator of The Proud Family, director of the 1992 movie Bebe's Kids, and was the supervising animator for various well-known Disney characters such as Kerchak (Tarzan), Pacha (The Emperor's New Groove), Dr. Facilier (The Princess and the Frog), and Piglet, Kanga, and Roo (Winnie the Pooh 2011).

Highlights:
• How some of the sequences in Hair Love were drawn from life
Features an accidental sneak peak at the currently-in-production Proud Family reboot (at 15:20)!
• Pitching The Proud Family to various networks only to be told it was better suited for BET or UPN
Penny Proud's skin color was darker originally
• Korey and Bruce discover they both worked on Space Jam (Bruce was the animation director, Korey painted the shadows for literally one shot lmao)
• Trying to balance just being an animator vs. being perceived as a black animator
Struggles of trying to get Bebe's Kids made, including being implored to tone down the blackness and "gang inflections" (????) of various aspects and multiple unnamed people leaving the project after finding the subject matter questionable
• Being mistaken for another animation professional by the same name and almost accidentally getting his royalty checks once
Bruce had dinner with Kobe Bryant just a few weeks before his death and the pair were discussing several potential projects to work on together. Kobe was evidently seeking to transition to the field of media production, particularly that of animation.

This is such a huge interview for Korey to get and I'm super proud of him. <3

Father at center of "The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence" charged with running cult

The father of a former Sarah Lawrence University undergrad has been arrested and indicted on charges of conspiracy, exploitation, forced labor, and sex trafficking, according to the New York Times. Lawrence V. Ray is said to have moved into his daughter's dormitory and targeted her friends, indoctrinating them into a cult and subjecting them to "sexual and psychological manipulation and physical abuse" for nearly a decade.

Ray's arrest comes nine months after the publication of "The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence," an explosive New York Magazine piece that chronicled (in disturbing detail—reader discretion advised) the ways in which he groomed and exploited the residents of the Slonim Woods 9 dorm. Officials say it was the article, written by Ezra Marcus and James D. Walsh, that prompted the investigation into Ray.

In May it was reported that Mark Wahlberg had bought the rights to the New York Magazine article, with plans to star as Ray onscreen. Additional information about the project, to be co-produced by Blumhouse, has yet to be announced.

You can read the full, redacted indictment here.
