Inside the $225,000 gift bag for Oscar nominees



The gift bag, which is not affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will be sent to all 20 acting nominees and the five men nominated for best director, Distinctive Assets, the Los Angeles-based company behind the goodie bags, said on Friday.

"It's the highest value we've ever put together," said Distinctive Assets founder Lash Fary, who has been assembling the bags for 18 years.

This year’s top swag includes a $78,000, 12-day yacht cruise; $20,000 of facial rejuvenation treatments; and $20,000 in matchmaking services.

The nearly 80 items also include clothing, gadgets and a 24-carat gold-plated vape pen that Fary said was selected with Leonardo DiCaprio in mind.
More than a dozen items have philanthropic elements, including a book that empowers young girls and a cleanser that supports showers for the homeless.

How 'Birds of Prey' Deconstructs the Male Gaze



-Writer Ciara Wardlow argues that Cathy Yan's recently-released Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) is one of the most effective deconstructions of the male gaze seen in mainstream film

-Female authorship is present in every aspect of the film, from Harley's VO narration to the female director (Cathy Yan), screenwriter (Christina Hodson), and producer (star Margot Robbie)

-Throughout the movie, the camera follows Harley's actions and desires rather than her body, a choice further emphasized by the contrast between her costuming in Birds of Prey as opposed to Suicide Squad (the full piece is worth a read)

Neon Acquires 'Shirley', Wins First Best Picture Oscar


Neon, the distribution company behind films such as I, Tonya, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and the newly minted Best Picture winner Parasite, has acquired Shirley out of Sundance. Josephine Decker's drama about the author Shirley Jackson stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Logan Lerman and Odessa Young, and was well-received critically at the January festival. Neon's other big purchase was the Andy Samberg vehicle Palm Springs.

Dwayne Johnson's Daughter Simone Joins the WWE



The Rock’s daughter Simone Johnson has signed with WWE and begun training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. She had been training part-time since she was in high school.

Simone will be the first ever fourth generation Superstar, following in the footsteps of her father, her grandfather Rocky Johnson and her great grandfather “High Chief” Peter Maivia. She has said her biggest fear is not being able to live up to her family's wrestling legacy.

Another award season is over, but one question remains: whose Oscars dress reigned supreme? From what I gathered while reading the comments in the red carpet post, this year didn't leave the best impression on ONTD viewers, but there were a few dresses that stood above the rest, and a few more that prompted questions like "why?" and "does her stylist hate her?"

Above, Natalie Portman wears a Dior dress and cape ensemble, with the names of female directors (Lorene Scafaria, Lulu Wang, Greta Gerwig, Mati Diop, Marielle Heller, Alma Har'el, Melina Matsoukas and Celine Sciamma) stitched on to the edge of her cape. You can see it without the cape under the cut, along with the rest of the standouts from this year's awards.

'Cats' Jokes at Oscars receiver Furrocious Backlash from VFX Artists



- 4000 VFX artists are yowling mad about the joke.
- They are contesting the idea that they alone are responsible for Universal's humongous flop.

"On a night that is all about honoring the work of talented artists, it is immensely disappointing that The Academy made visual effects the butt of a joke. It demeaned the global community of expert VFX practitioners doing outstanding, challenging and visually stunning work to achieve the filmmakers’ vision. Our artists, technicians and innovators deserve respect for their remarkable contributions to filmed entertainment, and should not be presented as the all-too-convenient scapegoat in service for a laugh,” the statement continued.

- VFX artists on other movies, also ironically about cats, "The Lion King" and "The Jungle Book" defended the "Cats" VFX artists.

* Ayesha Malik, known for being a beauty influencer, DevaCurl brand ambassador, as well as calling out Priyanka Jonas that one time, came forward to denounce prominent hair care brand with claims that it's ruined her hair.

* She is among thousands in facebook on the subject and a good dozen on youtube saying the same,

* It has been alleged the products have caused change in hair type, hair loss, bald patches and dandruff with a class action lawsuit is being rallied against DevaCurl.

Do you agree with this article? I think some of it is reaching because I don't think Margot was "pigeonholed" at first and she was always, to an extent, viewed with critical adoration.
