ONTD Original: 12 Songs & Artists Camila Cabello Has Been Accused of Ripping Off

*This is a companion piece to my ONTD Original on Taylor Swift and her alleged musical plagiarism over the years.

There’s a saying that goes: “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” Unfortunately, Camila Cabello is arguably not a “great artist,” as suggested in part by her recent failure to sell out more than 50% of seats at her upcoming Romance arena tour. She’s also been involved in countless racist scandals, and overall, has not taken off as one of Gen Z's choice Pop Girls, in spite of great efforts from producers and industry bigwigs.

Camila has always claimed to be heavily involved in writing her own music (never forget the self-written cringe masterpiece that is “Cinderella”), and she is clearly a huge pop music fan, so it’s fair to assume she was also involved in most of her album’s production and writing decisions. Including the you know...possible theft. Whether these alleged lifts are a direct result of Camila’s machinations, greedy and lazy music producers, or are just a symptom of made-for-radio pop music being hyper-derivate in general...we may never know for certain. One thing’s for sure though, there’s a LOT of songs on this list even though she’s only released two studio albums so far, so let’s strap in and go for a ride. Please note that this post is for entertainment purposes only, and I am aware none of these OG artists invented XYZ. Except well...some of this is pretty sketchy. You'll see.

Bernie Sanders gets the coveted Joe Rogan endorsement

Former Fear Factor host and now well known podcaster for men, Joe Rogan has endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in the upcoming 2020 election.

Describing himself as mostly having libertarian views, Rogan endorsed Gary Johnson in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and publicly supported Tulsi Gabbard in running for president in 2020.

Rogan credits his support for Sanders as admiring his ability to come across as a real person. He also mentions that you can't find much dirt on Bernie given his consistent past as a good person.

Nancy Drew "Dies" in New Comic for her 90th Anniversary so the Hardy Boys Can Solve Her Death

-Nancy's death and the subsequent investigation is the plot for the upcoming monthly comic book series Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew from Dynamite. This follows another monthly series Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Big Lie and brings back writer Anthony Del Col. The first issue comes out in April

-"Over the years, there have been a lot of difficult mysteries to solve in the lives of Nancy Drew as well as the Hardy brothers. But I wanted to top them all, and so put together the ultimate case – solving Nancy’s death! Joe Eisma and I have had a blast really coming up with some twists and turns that all fans – new and old – of Nancy, Frank and Joe will enjoy," said writer Anthony Del Col.

Artist Joe Eisma added, "Anthony and I have crafted a white knuckle ride of twists and turns for Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. Whether you're new to these characters or a long time fan, you won't want to miss this book!"

-Her death is most likely a fakeout, but it's still a weird choice to commemorate a long running character's anniversary this way.

Billy Eichner to Play Matt Drudge in FX's 'Impeachment: American Crime Story'

Billy Eichner has been cast as Matt Drudge for the upcoming American Crime Story: Impeachment. Drudge reported in January 1998 that Newsweek was sitting on a story about President Clinton's affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky, helping push the scandal into the mainstream media.

Becky Lynch wants "Women's" dropped from Division/Titles

- RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch recently set a new WWE record for most combined days as either Raw or SmackDown Women's Champion since the titles were reinstated back in 2016. She has beat Alexa Bliss' previous record of 505 days.
- Earlier this week on WWE Backstage she pushed for more gender equality in the WWE. "The best thing for the women's division right now is we eliminate the term 'women's.' It's now starting to hold us back. We're now going, 'this is the women's segment. this is the women's thing.' Why do we need that division?"
- Following her statement, NXT has announced that the NXT Women's title is going to be simply known as the NXT Championship, the exact same name as the title Adam Cole holds.
- Becky clarified her statements on Twitter saying "The term “women” can limit openings because phrases like, “there’s already a women’s match on the show” is still in wrestling’s historical DNA."
- It's unclear if Smackdwon and Raw will follow NXT, but OP thinks it's really doubtful.

British Actor Laurence Fox goes on several racist and sexist rants

It was quite a racist and misogynistic week for actor Laurence Fox. Where to even begin.... Let's start with his opinion about the film 1917. Where he complains about ONE Sikh character being shoehorned into this white hero's tale.

"It's very heightened awareness of the colour of someone's skin because of the oddness in the casting. Even in 1917 they've done it with a Sikh soldier, which is great, it's brilliant, but you're suddenly aware there were Sikhs fighting in this war. And you're like 'OK, you're now diverting me away from what the story is. It is kind of racist - if you talk about institutional racism, which is what everyone loves to go on about, which I'm not a believer in, there is something institutionally racist about forcing diversity on people in that way. You don't want to think about [that]."

1 in 6 people who fought for the Allies were from the Indian subcontinent. 1.4 million soldiers and labourers volunteered from the Indian subcontinent. 1 in 5 Indian Army soldiers were Sikh. 74,187 members of the Indian Army died. 18 Victoria Crosses were awarded to soldiers from the Indian Army. More than 3,000,000 million soldiers and labourers from across the Empire and the Commonwealth joined the war effort.

Being forced a slice of humble pie Fox apologized saying:

What is this "everything else" he stands by you ask? Strap in cause it didn't just end there...

The Rise and Fall of the iPod

When you think of Apple you probably think of the iPhone. But just 15 years ago, its hit product was the iPod. The iPod changed the way we listen to music and helped grow Apple into one of the biggest companies in the world. But the iPod went from accounting for almost half of Apple's revenue to not even being promoted by the company. Today, the only iPod Apple sells is the iPod touch, having discontinued the iPod Classic, Nano, and Shuffle.

RIP Clunky Legend.

Lori Tan Chinn talks about her long career and racism in the arts

  • Chinn plays Awkwafina's grandmother in the new series Nora From Queens, based on Awkwafina's life and her close relationship with her grandmother

  • Chinn says she was ready to give up acting and go on food stamps before landing the role

  • Born in Seattle but ran off to NYC to become a dancer and actress

  • A lot of her early roles (and even later roles) involved awful Asian stereotypes

  • When there were decent roles for Asian women she often lost out to white women, including Meryl Streep

  • Doesn't blame Meryl Streep for taking the role but still has a personal shit list of non-Asian actresses who play Asian (Emma Stone gets a shout out)

  • Credits the NYC African-American arts community with nurturing her career and keeping her employed (solidarity between poc!)

  • Her role in Orange is the New Black did not pay well and she still had to work odd jobs to survive

  • Her role in Nora From Queens is the most liberating and fun role she's ever had

  • Is happy that there is currently a cinematic Asian-American new wave but is obviously sad it didn't occur when she was younger

  • Money is still a problem though

Demi Lovato opens up about emotional journey behind new song "Anyone" to be performed at GRAMMYs

In a new interview with Beats 1's Zane Lowe, Demi Lovato has opened up about recording vocals for "Anyone," a new song to be debuted at Sunday's 62nd GRAMMY Awards ceremony, four days before overdosing on fentanyl-laced Oxycodone on July 24, 2018.

"I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help," Lovato says of the song. "And you kind of listen back to it, and you kind of think, how did nobody listen to this song and think, 'Let's help this girl.' You know what I'm saying?

"I remember being in the hospital and listening to this song. It had been a week after I'd been in the hospital, and I was finally awake, and I remember hearing back the songs I had just recorded and thinking, 'If there's ever a moment where I get to come back from this, I want to sing this song.'"

Gabrielle Union Responds to Terry Crew's Comments About Her Firing from AGT

Terry responded: “First of all, I can’t speak for sexism because I’m not a woman, but I can speak on behalf of any racism comments,” he said. “That was never my experience … in fact, it was the most diverse place I have ever been in my 20 years of entertainment.”

‘Anaconda’ Reboot in the Works at Sony With ‘Divergent’ Writer

Sony Pictures is in early development of a reboot of the “Anaconda” franchise, hiring “Divergent” writer Evan Daugherty to write the project.

So far, Sony does not have any actors or a director attached.

Sony released the original “Anaconda” in 1997 as a horror thriller starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz and Owen Wilson. Directed by Luis Llosa, the film centered on a documentary crew searching for a lost tribe in the Amazon. Along the way, they have to deal with a murderous snake hunter hunting a monstrous serpent.

The 1997 film led to a 2004 sequel and three TV films.

#GamersSitDown: US Fed. Law Declares Being 'Muted' in a Game Doesn't Violate Your Civil Rights

  • Last year, a person found himself muted in Runescape.

  • No word on what he did to be muted, but they're a gamer. LBR.

  • When his appeal was denied, he proceeded to file a lawsuit against Jagex, Runescape's parent company.

  • "You violated my free speech!" Was his argument.

  • To the surprise of no one, the first suit was dismissed, and the Judge was like "It's a private company, you 🤡."

  • The second claim ("YOU ARE DISCRIMINATING AGAINST ME," and cited the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title II. You know, the one that prohibits 'discrimination on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin', not how you play an MMO) was also met with a hearty "LOL Fuck outta here."

Tim Robbins talks politics and his play The New Colossus

Summary of conversation [Spoiler (click to open)]
Sunny starts with politics, brings up travel ban expanding to pregnant women. Slippery slope, where does it stop, they discuss. Morally outrageous. Joy says we’re all still outraged, but what can we do about it. TR wonders why media can’t make that a priority. Sunny wonders how will they know for sure, do you have to take a pregnancy test? I hate everything

TR directed and co-wrote his play, which is about the immigrant experience. Borrowed from the engravement on the Statue of Liberty. It was started before T45 admin, explains history and evolution of story. 12 actors talking in 12 different languages about their own stories of ancestral immigration. We’re all descended from people who said No, I will not tolerate [lists examples of bigotry and oppression]. Feels it’s an extraordinary story. Ana talks about her family’s history who fled from communism. Tells story of the northern migration, those who left the south to seek safety in the north. Story of people who had great dignity who said No and survived. Then they talk to the audience afterwards. Tells some stories from audience members.

Play is on a national tour, currently in Charlotte NC

Salma Hayek apologizes for promoting American Dirt book without reading it

Oprah's newest book club selection American Dirt, written by a white woman about the Mexican experience and which contains harmful stereotypes, has been on a bumpy ride since its release, which includes its launch party having barbed wire centerpieces.

The book has been promoted on social media by several Latina actors, including Salma Hayek, Gina Rodriguez, Yalitza Aparicio and Mj Rodriguez. Gina Rodriguez has quietly deleted her post after backlash, while Salma Hayek chose to delete and then explain herself.

https://instagram.com/p/B7tykhYp34y

She admitted she hadn't actually read the book but had been so excited that an Oprah pick was about a Mexican woman. She also thanked her fans for correcting and educating her on the controversy.

Salma's mea culpa perhaps will be forgotten since the book's publishers have brushed off criticisms from Latino writers. The film rights have also already been bought.
