Canada hates Donald Trump: CBC cuts him out of Home Alone 2 broadcast

  • Trump has a tiny cameo in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

  • The CBC (Canada's national tax-payer funded channel) broadcast the movie with Trump cut out

  • News of the cut somehow reached Trump who accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making the edit because he was displeased over NATO

  • Earlier this year at a NATO meeting Trudeau was caught talking about Trump and saying he does long press conferences and his team was shocked at what Trump was saying. Trump later called Trudeau "two faced" for the remarks and was then caught on a hot mic praising himself for calling Trudeau two faced

  • Trump also said the movie will never be the same (and had to add a "just kidding" because he's special that way)

  • CBC had to issue a statement that said the changes were made in 2014 and about 8 minutes of the film were trimmed for commercials

Spotify Won't Play Political Ads in 2020

Spotify is suspending sales of political advertisements in their ad-supported tier and in Spotify original and exclusive podcasts. They claim that they do not currently possess adequate tools to review and validate the ads but will review that decision as they improve their internal review processes. Spotify is the latest tech giant to weigh in on reviewing political content after Twitter's ban on political advertising and Facebook refusing to review validity of political ads.

George Michael's Sister Dies on the 3rd Anniversary of His Death

George Michael's sister Melanie Panayiotou was found dead at her home on Christmas Day, three years since her brother's death in 2016. Their sister Yioda discovered her at her home. The Metropolitan police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

The siblings were very close, with Melanie traveling with her brother at the height of his fame. George left his estate to his sisters. Recently, Melanie had done interviews expressing her happiness with the George Michael-inspired film Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke.

The family has released a statement through their lawyer, saying:

"We can confirm that very tragically Melanie has passed away suddenly. We would simply ask that the family's privacy be respected at this very sad time. There will be no further comment."

Drake Admits He Didn’t Want Rihanna To ‘Feel Disrespected’ By His Collab With Chris Brown

Drake is opening up about his collaboration with Brown and the effect it may or may not have had on Rihanna.
He discusses working with Brown while confirming the rumours of his own relationship with Rihanna.
His early attempts to make music with Brown were originally sidelined due to “resentment on both sides.”

“Well, I think we both just grew up to the point that that person that was kind of in the middle of us is like no longer a part of either of our lives currently, and I have the utmost love and respect for her. [Rihanna] knows that me and [Brown] have both been consumed by this issue and I think she’s a good person with a good heart and she’d rather see us put that issue to bed, rather than continue childish shitt and end up in a serious situation,”

Homophobic Slur in ‘Gavin and Stacey’ U.K. Christmas Special Stirs Controversy

The return of “Gavin and Stacey” after nearly 10 years was a big hit on Christmas Day for the BBC.
It drew some blowback from U.K. viewers over the use of a homophobic slur in a song lyric.
The performance of the Pogues’ Christmas chestnut “Fairytale of New York.”
The song that dates to 1987 has for decades been one of the most popular Christmas tunes in the U.K.
The line that has been modified in some recent cover versions: “You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy f—–.”

BBC's statement
” ‘Fairytale of New York’ is a very popular, much-loved Christmas song played widely throughout the festive season, and the lyrics are well established with the audience,”

Ruth Jones' statement (who co-created the series with James Corden)
“It is a different climate. But we have to remain true to the characters, to who they were. Characters in Gavin & Stacey are kind and big-hearted, I believe. So I think no one is going to be intentionally hurtful. But by the same token, they’re not necessarily going to be completely politically correct or be aware of political correctness.”

Pietro Boselli defends attendance at MDL Beast in Saudia Arabia, decries "culture of outrage"

Mathematics professor-cum-model Pietro Boselli was among the many influencers taken to task by Instagram's Diet Prada upon attending the MDL Beast music festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia earlier this month, and he is not happy about it. In a seven-minute video posted to his Instagram, the past Attitude magazine cover star called the criticism leveled against himself and others "nonsense" and asked his followers to "adhere to reason, and not the culture of outrage and virtue signaling and finger-pointing that is so rampant on social media nowadays" before passing judgment.

Reactions to the video have been mixed. One viewer dubbed it "the most condescending and arrogant explanation of bad behavior [they'd] ever heard," while another praised Boselli sharing his insights.

World-traveling "nomad" influencer family accused of falsifying terms and results of their giveaway

The Gee family, also known as the Bucket List Family, with more than 2.4 million Instagram followers, are five self-proclaimed nomads who travel the world. This lifestyle was possible after dad Garrett sold his app to Snapchat for $54 million in 2015.

Each year, parents Garrett and Jessica host a huge giveaway Oprah-style series called “12 Days of Bucket List Christmas.” For 12 days at the end of the year, they surprise “families in need with a gift that means so much to [their] own family: the gift of travel,” says Jessica. This year’s destinations include Tanzania, Hawaii, Fiji, Disney World in Orlando.

According to the family’s overly simplistic instructions in their captions on how to submit to the contest, “All you need to do is LIKE this post then SHARE this post in your Instagram stories!”, but apparently, to officially enter, one must also be following and tagging required accounts, and filling out certain form(s).

Paige, an intellectual property and contracts lawyer on Instagram took notice and revealed the dishonest details on the contest, on a series of stories she posted on Tuesday.

First, the official rules to enter were not made clear, since ‘liking and sharing’ was not actually entering them in the sweepstakes, since there were many more steps including liking other Instagram accounts, following them on YouTube, posting photos/videos of your family on Instagram, using hashtags, and filling out a contact information form. Second, the official guidelines said they would announce the winners between December 10th and December 21st, meaning the contest was presumably closed on Dec. 21, yet they encourage people still ‘enter to win’ after that date to generate engagement with their content, letting people continue ‘liking and sharing,’ which ultimately helped them gain more followers by deceiving the public, especially since accusations of the winners being preselected were thrown.

They family has gained half a million more followers by doing this which equates to a ton of more money for them per post. This argument more intense when they blocked Paige and quietly updated their terms.

Ultimately the family released a statement claiming the miscommunication to be unintentional, and that the winners were not random but selected to families they thought deserved the very kind gesture of an international family trip.

Have you won something on a raffle/giveaway? Where are you planning on traveling for next year, ONTD?

Romancelandia is Burning 2019

Romancelandia has been burning since December 23rd when Romance Writers of America or RWA, an organization created by a black woman, decided that they support racist white ladies over their writers of color. This is a mess and I will try my best to summarize what happened. Still, this is a bit long lol.

For context:

  • Back in August 2019, NWL Suzan Tisdale announces that her publishing company Glenfinnan has hired Sue Grimshaw, a former Borders (rip) book buyer who shelved the romance novels of African American authors--and also novels with African American characters--in the African American section instead of the Romance section.

  • To make matters more predictable, Grimshaw's twitter likes featured many MAGA friendly accounts. Here are some screenshots.

  • Predictibly, people did not want Sue Grimshaw in any position of power because she's a racist.

  • Tisdale decides to do a 12 minute video where she states that 'Sue is no more a racist or a bigot than I am' and 'She's a lot like me. We have conservative fiscal values but liberal social values.' She doubles down saying she won't get rid of Grimshaw.

  • Courtney Milan, a Chinese-American romance author with a big social media following created a thread explaining why people have every right to feel wary of Grimshaw:

ONTD Original: The Best Memes of the Decade, Pt. 2

memes.png
PART ONE

After Myspace flopped in 2008, social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit moved into the mainstream of the internet. These new platforms became the go-to spaces for global online communities.

With the global connection came the spread and sharing of memes. Once the internet figured out what memes were, these videos and images came to represent moments in pop culture as they spread across the internet. Images, short gifs or short video clips, memes became the main way to react on the internet.

As we hit the end of the decade, let's look back at the things on the internet that made us laugh the hardest. I've gathered 50+ memes that are a perfect representation of the 2010's. In these times, we’ve got to find our joy where we can. Here's the final part of the best memes of the 2010s:

Sad Keanu (2010)

"The paparazzi photograph of sullen-looking Reeves eating a sandwich was taken sometime in May 2010 by Splash News. In June 2010, a Reddit user posted an image with the phrase 'I really enjoy acting... Because when I act, I'm no longer me' in a thread entitled 'Keanu. More sadness in comments.' The thread quickly made it to Reddit's front page. Throughout the rest of June 2010, photoshopped images of Sad Keanu spread across various social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, personal blogs on Tumblr and much more."

Henry Cavill prefers to play video games than going out

Henry Cavill would rather stay home paying war hammer than going out. He’s played it through six times already, accounting for hundreds of hours of gameplay with six different races.

He says, “Every time I step out my front door, I’m hyper aware,” he says. “Even if I’m not looking terrible, you still realise there are people taking sneaky photos of you, because that’s what people like to do. And then they put them on the internet and you see them on Instagram and you’re like, ‘Oh, my god.’”

He reminisces fondly about playing games with his brothers, cramped around his mother's dining room table. He grew up on games such as Delta Force and Half Life.

Peach connoisseur Timothée Chalamet broke his Twitter hiatus this week to the delight of all his fans to catch up and promote his latest movie, Little Women. When one of his fans joked that they were shopping for his birthday (today!), Timothée suggested that they make a donation to an LGTBQ organization instead. This resulted in a number of fans posting snapshots of their donation receipts.

Here other notable replies:
