Starbucks Reserve Roastery teams up with 160-year old Kyoto doll makers for souvenirs

Starbucks opened a store located on Kyoto’s famous Ninenzaka, the steep hill leading up to Kiyomizu Temple. In order to blend in with the traditional neighbourhood, they created the first ever ‘tatami mat Starbucks’ inside a renovated century-old townhouse.

The location also happened to be very close to Shimada Kouen, a doll makers shop which was established in 1859, and has helped keep the beautiful craft alive since then, passing the business down the family over five generations. They specialize in a type of traditional Japanese ornaments. The Gosho-ningyo, imperial palace dolls, because they were often given as gifts to Daimyo who visited the royal court at Kyoto.

Starbucks is collaborating with the workshop, utilising their expertise to create original souvenirs which are being sold exclusively in the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, a mega-coffee shop which only recently opened in Tokyo.

The most expensive one is a classic gosho-ningyo holding a gilded cup (50,000 yen), a maneki neko (beckoning cat) wearing a green apron like the Starbucks baristas and a Chinese zodiac rat (3500 yen), just in time for his year in 2020.

Although many lament corporate giants taking over the coffee scene in many countries, some are lauding Starbucks efforts to incorporate aesthetics, local culture into their ventures and using their influence to bring attention to traditional arts, like in this example, or more recently in Italy and their coffee culture.

The biggest snubs from the SAG nominations, including 'The Farewell', 'Little Women'

I know de Niro didn't get a best actor nod, but it should be pointed out that he's getting the lifetime achievement so I guess maybe SAG just said fuck it? Though it's a bit of a weak argument since Tom Hanks is getting the DeMille award at the GGs and is also nominated for supporting actor. Anyway, over to the snubs.

-- “Little Women” getting totally shut out was a surprise, especially for star Saoirse Ronan who was nominated for a GG but not here. And yes, it was more critically acclaimed than most of the films actually nominated so it was a surprise. The end-of-year release date probably hurt its chances.
-- Antonio Banderas, “Pain and Glory” - he got the GG nod and numerous accolades already, so it's a bit of a surprise he was shut out of best actor. We'll see about the Oscars, though.
-- Eddie Murphy, “Dolemite Is My Name” & Adam Sandler, “Uncut Gems” - same with Banderas, they were nominated for previous awards for acclaimed performances, but shut out as well.
-- Awkwafina, “The Farewell” and the movie itself getting snubbed is a surprise since it got GG love and tons of acclaim before. SAG remains fickle and unpredictable.
-- “Succession” - after all the Emmy nominations, this getting snubbed at the GGs and SAGs is fucking baffling. But let's keep giving nods to David Harbour and his terrible acting right? Mess.

TIL that "Breathe (2 AM)" singer Anna Nalick released a folksy covers album last week

It may be hard to believe, but in exactly one week it will be 15 years since Anna Nalick released her debut single and biggest hit "Breathe (2 AM)." And while the singles that followed from her first album, 2005's Wreck of the Day, failed to match that song's runaway success, Nalick never walked away from music. She followed up her debut with two independently released albums, Broken Doll & Odds & Ends (2011) and At Now (2017), and now she's back with a new collection of covers called The Blackest Crow.

"Recorded in a single day in a decommissioned Brooklyn church," The Blackest Crow sees Nalick reinterpreting songs from music's last century, from '40s jazz ballads to '60s folk to '90s alt rock.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o is promoting the next Star Wars installment and her book Sulwe

Summary of conversation [Spoiler (click to open)]
Danced out to Ciara’s Melanin, in which she raps in it. Celebration of women’s color. Ciara texted her and she jumped at the opportunity. Sunny didn’t know she could rap! Meghan congratulates her for her SAG nomination. Talks horror genre. Talks about the first time she was nominated and was very discombobulated. This time she feels more relaxed and can see it with perspective. Feels manageable. Talks about playing two different roles. It was great to see the film resonate, and now she’s getting nominated.

Joy talks about how pretty she is. Brings up the winner of Miss Universe and her skin color and hair being beautiful, can’t imagine Lupita never -not- being considered beautiful. She did a children’s book called Sulwe about appreciating herself. She’s delighted to see things changing, and moments like these that change subconscious bias. Sunny lists the current four beauty queens are all of color, black women. Abby loves the book as well, and talks about representation. Talks about her Chinese sister, and Constance Wu about Crazy Rich Asians saying finally someone who looks like me. LN tells a story about a woman who thanks LN for teaching her how to love her own daughter, teaching her daughter to love who she was. LN talks more about what impact it has to see yourselves in images in aspiration and imagination. Sunny moves to Star Wars. LN jokes about obvious things because she can’t give spoilers. Her character is animatronics, not cgi.

Apparently sloth yoga is a thing, and people and organizations are not here for it

Sloth yoga and other sloth activities are becoming more popular all around. With Alligator Attraction at John’s Pass as the first tourist destination in Florida to let people stretch and pose alongside two-toed sloths. The organization made national headlines for offering $175 alligator pool parties. Like the pool parties, their new animal event has proven popular — and prone to critique.

The organizations behind these kind of activities say wildlife contact helps visitors learn about conservation. But there’s no clear link that shows the experiences with wild animals in captivity lead to restoration in the wild. Experts say pay-to-play businesses perpetuate the idea that exotic animals are commodities. These kinds of activities often put animals into stressful situations and peril.

The sloth spike dates back years, lining up with Kristen Bell’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2012. A clip of the actress sobbing and hugging a sloth for her 31st birthday went viral.

Since Bell’s first Ellen appearance, privately obtained sloths imported from outside the U.S. have surged, Heard said. More sloths are kept as pets, featured in petting zoos or sold on black markets than before. But sloths don’t do well in captivity, with many cases where young sloths are taken from their mother too early and where they’re not fed the right foods

Taylor Swift covers Billboard + the interview

On Loverfest being a short tour: “This is a year where I have to be there for my family -- there’s a lot of question marks throughout the next year, so I wanted to make sure that I could go home.”

On making the music industry better: “New artists and producers and writers need work, and they need to be likable and get booked in sessions, and they can’t make noise -- but if I can, then I’m going to.”

Says tumblr is her "comfort zone," where she can make jokes. She doesn't have twitter on her phone and only follows political news.

Over 20 new artist have called her for advice saying, “hey, I’m getting my first wave of bad press, I’m freaking out, can I talk to you?” Faith Hill was a mentor to her in her country days but she didn't have one in the pop industry.

On her single choices: "I feel so much pressure with a first single that I don’t want the first single to be something that makes you feel like you’ve figured out what I’ve made on the rest of the project. I still truly believe in albums... We’re running really fast toward a singles industry, but you got to believe in something. I still believe that albums are important."

On buying her masters: "I spent 10 years of my life trying rigorously to purchase my masters outright and was then denied that opportunity, and I just don’t want that to happen to another artist if I can help it. I want to at least raise my hand and say, “This is something that an artist should be able to earn back over the course of their deal -- not as a renegotiation ploy -- and something that artists should maybe have the first right of refusal to buy.” God, I would have paid so much for them! Anything to own my work that was an actual sale option, but it wasn’t given to me."

"Every week, we get a dozen synch requests to use “Shake It Off” in some advertisement or “Blank Space” in some movie trailer, and we say no to every single one of them. And the reason I’m rerecording my music next year is because I do want my music to live on. I do want it to be in movies, I do want it to be in commercials. But I only want that if I own it."

Kris Jenner Is Giving the Gift of Botox to Her Family and Friends This Holiday Season

Momager Kris Jenner, 64, is partnering with Botox Cosmetic and is gifting her family and friends Botox gift cards. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” and “New Year, New Me” like cosmetic surgery.

“It’s a one stop shop for me,” Jenner tells PEOPLE. “And who doesn’t love Botox? For me it’s been really great. If you’re responsible, and you talk to your doctor, I think it works. It’s something that I’ve been using for a long time.”

Kris also shared her beauty routine.

“My routine is pretty simple, but it always has been my entire life,” she explains. “A massage, a great facial, a manicure and a little Botox and I’m good to go. I’m pretty traditional. As long as I’m clean and scrubbed up, I’m a happy camper.”

Jenner also added that she plans to give her mother, Mary Jo “MJ” Campbell, 85, a Botox gift card for the holidays.

ONTD, are you giving the gift of Botox to your loved ones this holiday season? Would you ever consider cosmetic surgery?

Michelle Obama Talks Bond with George W. Bush

Even when we take the blood soaked record of other former US presidents into consideration, George W. Bush still stands out as one of the biggest war criminals and human rights' violator in world history. Using false evidence, Bush led the US to the Iraq War. Over 1 million civilians were killed, millions more were displaced and the effects are still felt by those who live there, with millions becoming sick, thousands of babies being born with birth deffects, etc.

Domestically, of course, Bush was also a mess and, even now, his family is still causing havoc in the country. In fact, the Bush family was one of the biggest advocates for Kavanaugh, normalizing him to segments of the US establishment which helped him confirm his seat at the Supreme Court.

None of that seems to move People's Woman of the Year Michelle Obama. In an interview with Jenna Bush for the Today Show, she says she doesn't see any problem with her friends Ellen DeGeneres and George W. Bush also being friends with each other. She goes further and says:

“Our values are the same. We disagree on policy, but we don’t disagree on humanity, we don’t disagree about love and compassion”.

Rapper Noname was one of the few celebrities to react to Michelle's statements.

Tekashi 6ix9ine Reveals Why He Snitched on the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods Gang

Tekashi 6ix9ine, now notorious for being an FBI snitch, wrote a letter to a federal judge about why he decided to turn on the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods.

Tekashi did not face any serious consequences for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old-girl, allegedly beating his child's mother, or allegedly strangling a 16-year-old girl in public, but he does face prison time for racketeering, firearms offenses and drug trafficking.

So, why would he apologize and try to explain himself now? Oh... his sentencing is coming up.

  • "Before my arrest, I publicly dissociated myself from Nine Trey but I knew that it would come with a price. I knew... that the gang would retaliate against me... I was kidnapped by members of the gang, became aware of the fact that the mother of my child was having sexual relations with one of my co-defendants and they were stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from me."

  • "I had a feeling of relief when I was arrested by the Government because I felt stuck, like the gang had control of my life and that I would never be able to escape their grip. I needed to do something before it was too late."

  • "I know that I am not the victim because my actions contributed to this mess."

  • "There is no excuse, no justification and no apology good enough to explain my crimes."

He got four months of probation for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, distributing a video of it on the internet and profiting from it. Hope he rots.

Ever been arrested, ONTD?
