Sony Will Shut down Playstation VUE in Jan 2020

Tuesday, Sony said it will shut down its PlayStation VUE service on Jan. 30. VUE competed with cable TV alternatives, offering viewers a cheaper way to get the channels they love, without having to rent cable boxes and DVRs.

"The highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected," Sony said in a blog post. "Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business."

This is a major bummer. I have this & while I hated that they kept raising prices while dropping networks, at least I didn't have to buy another device since I used a PS4 to receive it.

Lana del Rey and her music shaped the decade

As part of Washington post’s series of people that shaped the decade, songstress and aloof siren, Lana del Rey, was named as the person that shaped this decade through her music.

The profile mentions that her newest work is the greatest Lana Del Rey album, dizzying and precise, unknowable and lucid, unprecedented while still feeling like more of the same, genius all the way.

For years, the easiest way to reconcile the strangeness of Lana Del Rey was to tell ourselves that we were listening to a persona. However, she retorts “Never had a persona. Never needed one. Never will.”

Adding to her mystique, the singer’s rise out of the New York open-mic circuit and up through the industry machinery, had been spun into a media narrative about how she wasn’t operating on her own creative volition, as if her songs had been focus-grouped into existence. But her delicate sensibility and the lyrics she wrote by herself, connected with the audience.

She continued to grow into her ideas while listeners demanded to know what her music meant, who it spoke for, what it stood for. Her songwriting and aesthetic style, inspiring and influencing many other artists and peers.

She agrees that too many listeners reflexively hear the slowness in her songs as shorthand for sadness. She just moves through her life at a slower pace. As for the meanings of her lyrics, not all of them are up for discussion.

The View: Cory Booker, Mary Wilson, Meghan Moment, Hot Topics

Full panel today

[Meghan is rude again, Booker segment]

Cory Booker

Four more clips behind the cut [Spoiler (click to open)]

Summary of conversation [Spoiler (click to open)]
[Recurring theme, when a panel member brings up another candidate re/platform differences, Cory says he won’t tear down the character of other candidates. Specifically says this about Biden and Beto.]

Sunny starts, this is the most diverse candidate pool but according to NYT the front runners are white men, some cross talk about Warren, but NYT is source. Cory says leader this early in the polls has never gone on to be the nominee, cites examples Carter, Clinton1, Kerry, Obama, Clinton2. He says that there are so many of us, that things are getting diluted. Iowa is about organizing on the ground, he and Warren lead with the best teams. Biggest issue is to get enough money to stay in the game. Whoopi isn’t a poll-person, she’s a people person, people need to vote and participate in caucuses. CB mentions Wisconsin and how small the margin of loss was, re/black voters who didn’t participate. Need to energize the black voters.

Joy mentions Biden who has high black voter support. Joy wants to know the biggest differences between him and Biden. CB talks criminal justice reform, details. Mentions transforming economic downturn during his time in NJ. He believes he’s the better candidate who can inspire and excite the electorate. Beating T45 is the floor not the ceiling. Lists the other states where Dems must win. Talks details, moves on to Russian interference, his mantra for turning around the country.

[Meghan is rude to Booker in this clip]
Meghan starts with M4A, that Booker doesn’t think it’s feasible at this time. But he does support taking guns away. CB says No he differs from Beto, explains how. Meghan interrupts, says Beto was mean to her [spoiler alert, he wasn’t]. CB addresses her behavior, she smarts off at him. [damn she is awful] CB gives example of people who incite violence which he responds is a felony. Meghan continues to be a petulant child. Gun buyback gun buyback gun buyback. CB is explaining his position, Meghan interrupts repeatedly. CB talks more about his position on gun control topics. CB doesn’t want us to be divided by false arguments. More overtalking. [Meghan is incapable of having a mature conversation where she does not interrupt the speaker]. Whoopi takes it to commercial, Meghan smarts off again.

Sunny brings up 1 yr anniversary with boo Rosario who is in the audience*. Mentions last time an unmarried man was elected President. CB talks about her support, doesn’t want more pressure on their relationship, laughs it off.

Abby brings up baseball and booing at Nats game. [she is being ridiculous, booing at a sports event is the bare minimum]. CB mentions Lock Her Up against Hillary. CB talks a lot of kumbaya. Abby wonders if the country will come together after impeachment. CB feels this (impeachment inquiry) is a sober way to address the issue, people should see the gravity of that, it should build trust. Meghan says CB is going against T45 who is a thug. Your message is great, but he’s going to fight dirty. CB says he comes from NJ, he can handle it.

*No the lawsuit and allegations with Rosario weren’t brought up.

‘Star Wars’: Inside ‘GOT’ Creators’ Exit and the Pressures Facing Lucasfilm

In case you missed it, Benioff and Weiss, great ruiners of the last season of Game of Thrones, have dropped their Star Wars project, citing 'scheduling conflicts' with Netflix.

PFFT, yeah right. But they're just the latest in a long string of directors who have gained - and lost - a Star Wars film under Kathleen Kennedy's producership:

  • Lord and Miller - Solo - Went on to make a movie other than the one they agreed upon, left, and went on to continue producing the far-superior "Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse".

  • Colin Trevorrow - Episode 9 - Creative differences + "Book of Henry".

  • Josh Trank - A Boba Fett Film - Where to begin. Honestly, I can't even blame Kennedy for not keeping him on.

It is unclear if Rian Johnson ("The Last Jedi") still has his standalone series.

Multiple insiders said new ideas were commonly shot down as Kennedy and her team were only looking for people to stick to the company line. Disagreements led to people leaving. Lawrence Kasdan is still used as a key sounding board after writing "Empire Strikes Back".

B&W were interested in exploring how the Jedi came to exist, which does sound far more interesting than the SW movies of the present.

"The Rise of Skywalker" opens on December 20th, 2019.

Harry Styles and his new single “Lights Up” flops

Harry Styles and his comeback single, “Lights Up,” is a certified flop. The song made a respectable debut in the US at no. 17, and in the U.K. at no. 3. In its second week, the single fell 49 spots from no. 17 to no. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the U.K., the single is currently no. 11.

In defense of this feo however, the single has yet to be officially sent to radio in the US. But would it make much of a difference? Would radio even embrace this particular single? Quien sabe.

Other excuses theories being thrown around by fans is that “Lights Up” isn’t the “official” first single.

What do you think? Is it too soon to say, is Columbia Records incompetent? ...or should Henry hang it up, flatscreen?

Obama Criticizes Cancel Culture on Social Media: ‘That’s Not Activism’

President Obama called out what he called “woke” culture.

Obama told the audience on Tuesday at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago:

“This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re always politically woke and all that stuff, you should get over that quickly,” he said. “The world is messy. There are ambiguities. People who do really good stuff have flaws.”

“There is this sense sometimes of the way of me making change is for me to be as judgmental about other people, and that’s enough”

“Like if I tweet or hashtag about how you didn’t do something right or used the wrong verb, then I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself because ‘man, you see how woke I was I called you out,’ ” he added.

Olivia Wilde Confused by Delta Airlines Removing 'Booksmart' Lesbian Love Scene

Olivia Wilde recently found out that scenes from 'Booksmart' had been censored on Delta Airlines.
Delta had used a third-party censor to edit out dialogue and entire scenes from the film.
Wilde remarked that the edits had a sexist bias: romantic scenes between two queer women had been cut, as well as some language.

“There are certain words and certain scenes that are cut out, that aren’t the swear words. It’s ‘fuck, fuck, fuck’ all day, but they removed the word ‘masturbation,’ they removed the word ‘vagina.’ So I’m just curious what a woman is supposed to take from that. That it’s an obscenity. That it’s inappropriate.”

An entire queer love scene had been cut. Delta’s version of the film had removed the hookup scene between two characters played by Silvers and Dever.

“There’s insane violence of bodies being ripped in half and yet a love scene between two women is censored from the film. It’s such an integral part of the character’s journey. My heart just broke. I don’t understand it. It’s confusing.”

Etihad Airways and Emirates had edited the film as well.

Evan Rachel Wood calls out Paris Hilton for saying Millie Bobby Brown, 15, is ‘hot’

Wood is not OK with Hilton using her signature “that’s hot” catchphrase to compliment Brown.
Hilton did not respond to Wood’s remarks, but many fans came to her defense in the comments.

“Anyone familiar with her knows that the phrase ‘that’s hot’ just basically means ‘that’s cool’ or to show appreciation for something you think is awesome,”
“It was her catchphrase of sorts, for heaven’s sake. Please, stop being so eager to chastise somebody.”

David Simon Is Very Annoyed That He Has to Explain Why He Kept Working With James Franco

In a tense new interview, the Deuce showrunner David Simon said there should be clearer distinctions between the accusations against Franco and other #MeToo stories.

Simon critiqued the way the Los Angeles Times handled its initial story and chided critics who have suggested that Franco should be dropped from The Deuce, drawing a line between allegations against the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Les Moonves.

Simon thought people’s reactions to the allegations against Franco were “hyperbolic, because on a very basic level, what James is dealing with, it’s not what we’re seeing in the other cases involving #MeToo. It simply isn’t.”

“The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had—if that were what the accusation involved—the show would not have gone on.”

“I’m not saying there isn’t a story there, but the proportionality got lost. And if you’re telling me the press did a good job on that, I’m sorry, but I’ve done that job, and I know what was here and what wasn’t here, and how it was portrayed.”

THR gives details on why Game of Thrones Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss left Star Wars

-Kathleen Kennedy was annoyed that they signed on with Netflix in August. She was unsure that D&D could work on both their Netflix projects and Star Wars at the same time.

-Netflix only learned about D&D leaving Star Wars a couple of days before the news broke out on Monday night.

-Apparently Disney was annoyed that D&D chose Netflix for the overall deal. Amazon was the frontrunner before Netflix swooped in.

-People questioned why Netflix would make a $250 million deal with D&D only to be second place to Star Wars. But apparently Netflix and Disney were in a shared position, meaning that D&D could work on both Star Wars and Netflix at the same time.
