Benioff & Weiss Exit Star Wars Trilogy

Game Of Thrones’ Duo David Benioff & D.B. Weiss have exited their Star Wars trilogy, the first of which was set to release in December 2022.
The pair cited their historic deal with Netflix as the reason for their exit. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full up.
“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects, so we are regretfully stepping away.”

New Books Hitting Shelves This Week

Ordinary Girls

In this searing memoir, Jaquira Díaz writes fiercely and eloquently of her challenging girlhood and triumphant coming of age.

While growing up in housing projects in Puerto Rico and Miami Beach, Díaz found herself caught between extremes. As her family split apart and her mother battled schizophrenia, she was supported by the love of her friends. As she longed for a family and home, her life was upended by violence. As she celebrated her Puerto Rican culture, she couldn’t find support for her burgeoning sexual identity. From her own struggles with depression and sexual assault to Puerto Rico’s history of colonialism, every page of Ordinary Girls vibrates with music and lyricism. Díaz writes with raw and refreshing honesty, triumphantly mapping a way out of despair toward love and hope to become her version of the girl she always wanted to be.

The Purposeful Set Design of 'Parasite'

  • Bong Joon-ho's Parasite has been a box office success even in limited release, and is sure to be up for plenty of statues this award season. But if you've seen the film, it may surprise you to know that all of the sets were built completely from scratch.

  • The houses of both families featured in the film were built on outdoor lots to unique specifications.

  • The Park house was created from descriptions of blocking laid out in the script, with consideration for cameras and the lighting at certain times of day, as well as the fact that it was supposed to be designed by an architect.

  • The Kim apartment was designed based on a house that the production designer Lee Ha Jun had lived in when he was in college, and is situated as it is to represent their station in life.

  • Even the neighborhood that the Kim family lives in was built for the film [Spoiler (click to open)]because of the need to completely flood it with a rainstorm. It took months to find and gather all of the materials to create the neighborhood, which is based on similar-looking neighborhoods in Korea.

  • The design of each set was very carefully considered, with each set piece reinforcing the themes present in the film.

  • DON'T READ THE FULL ARTICLE UNLESS YOU'VE ALREADY SEEN THE FILM. If you have seen it, check it out for concept designs and set photos.

If you haven't seen Parasite yet, I'd recommend skipping the comments here, because idk how you'd discuss this topic without spoiling certain elements of the film!

Viola Davis Defends Marvel, DC Storytelling: "Art Lives in That World of Imagination"

Viola Davis was asked her opinion on the recent debate about superhero films.

Her response: “Art lives in that world of imagination. It’s a playground there. It’s God’s playground. It’s not up to anyone to say what deserves to be there and what doesn’t deserve to be there. It’s anything that you want to be in that place can live there. And that is why we have some of the greatest painters, some of the greatest actors, some of the greatest writers, and that’s why we live. So I do believe that there’s a place for all of it.”

HBO Passes on 'Troubled' Game of Thrones Prequel Project

HBO execs screened the pilot over the summer and were not thrilled with the results. They sent it back to be re-edited and still hated it. The series was doomed from the start due to budget overruns, personnel issues and creative differences.

The untitled series “chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

But have no fear! HBO is still planning another prequel series co-created by everyones favorite literary troll George R.R Martin based on his book Fire & Blood which will be set 300 years before the original Thrones series, chronicling the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.

AFI Fest Announces 2019 Lineup

AFI Fest has announced this year's lineup, which is underwhelming compared to other festival lineups this season. And in more unfortunate news, the previously free of charge festival is now charging for tickets to each screening.

On the plus side, with 51% of this year's films directed by women, AFI Fest is one of the few festivals that has actually achieved gender parity with directors of its selections.

The festival has a few big premieres: Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell and Melina Matsoukas' Queen and Slim, both of which were previously announced, as well as the Apple film The Banker, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Nicholas Hoult and Nia Long. Other big name films at this year's fest include The Aeronauts, Clemency, and Just Mercy.

This year's festival is honoring Alan J. Pakula by screening several of his films, such as Sophie's Choice and Klute.

You can read more about each film at the AFI website. If you're in LA and want to check out some of the festival's offerings, OP can personally recommend Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Proxima, and has also heard great things about Rocks, Atlantics, and Blow the Man Down.

I'm an AFI member and got zero notice about this year's schedule or when tickets were set to go on sale, and their website is a damn laggy mess. Really disappointing after last year's excellent festival.

Gorl! Academy Award Winner Anna Paquin Only Has One Line in "The Irishman"

Martin Scorsese is leaning into his willfully ignant trait because his film legacy has been cemented. So why do better right? In a podcast called The Director's Cut, the Cinema Gatekepper talks with Spike Lee who also can't write women for shit. Scorsese recounts asking "The Irishman" writer Steve Zaillian if Paquin's character who plays DeNiro's daughter in the film "should be layered". Scorsese ultimately decided that Paquin's gesticulations would be enough and that she utters one line in the entire film. (How fucking fabulous!) Is that not girl code, why say anything when you can have a man do it for you?! Am I right ladies?!
