New Books Hitting Shelves This Week

The Wedding Party

Maddie and Theo have two things in common:

1. Alexa is their best friend
2. They hate each other

After an “oops, we made a mistake” night together, neither one can stop thinking about the other. With Alexa's wedding rapidly approaching, Maddie and Theo both share bridal party responsibilities that require more interaction with each other than they're comfortable with. Underneath the sharp barbs they toss at each other is a simmering attraction that won't fade. It builds until they find themselves sneaking off together to release some tension when Alexa isn't looking, agreeing they would end it once the wedding is over. When it’s suddenly pushed up and they only have a few months left of secret rendezvouses, they find themselves regretting that the end is near. Two people this different can’t possibly have a connection other than the purely physical, right?

But as with any engagement with a nemesis, there are unspoken rules that must be abided by. First and foremost, don't fall in love.

Keke Palmer and Kandi Burruss talk about sex and relationships as they co-host "Strahan and Sara"

-Keke Palmer and Kandi Burruss gave advice on" Strahan and Sara".

- One woman asked if sending nudes was ok. Kandi said no, because relationships sometimes end and you don't want something permanent out there for what may be temporary. She kept a file of nudes sent to her that she showed her friends and deleated when she got married and wouldn't want the same for herself.

-Keke says that people want to be connected when they are apart and if the person considers what may happen if they are made public go for it. She says hashtag No Face, No Case.

- A woman asks how can she be more open in bed. Keke says do a little research. Kandi says she has dice where one has a body part name and one has an action for said body part, so games can help.

- A guy says he hates sleeping in the same bed with his person because he gets a bad nights sleep and ask is it ok to have seperate beds.
Keke says everyone is different and to discuss what is right for them. Kandi says to get a bigger bed as the further you are apart, the further you are apart.

Ontd: Do you like sharing a bed?

- Anchor Dyan Dreyer said she was not aware of the interment camps until recently and Takei says many don't and that is one reason he put the story in comic form as to reach younger audiences.

- Takei says his memories are fuzzy, but he has one very clear memory. His parents woke him and his 4 year old brother up very early to get dressed and to wait in the living room. Takei had just had his birthday in May and it was June of 1942 when he saw 2 soldiers with rifles bang on the door. Takei, his brother, his parents and infant sister were taken to the camps.

- As a teen Takei was curous about that time and asked his father about it. His father said ours is a participatory democracy and if people don't participate than more injustices can happen. Takei's father than took him to Adlai Stevenson's presidental campaign headquaters.( Stevenson received the Democratic nomination in 1952 and 1956, but lost to Dwight Eisenhower both times).

- Takei says the voter turnout is very bad and people who can vote should, and volunteer if you can if you want change.

Goodreads ask: Can You Be 'Too Old' for YA?

- The term "Young Adult" nods to a specific age group (12 to 19), but there are still a lot of adults who reads YA novels. On Goodreads over 15.8 million members have "Young Adult" as their favorite book genre, while only 20% of those 15.8 million have disclosed their age, 65 percent of that sample are 18 and older and 33 percent are above the age of 35.

- Erica Barmash, senior director of marketing and publicity at Bloomsbury Children's Books says "interest in YA doesn't immediately stop once someone turns 19."

- Lindsay Boggs, assistant director of publicity at Penguin Young says "Just because a narrative in a YA novel might take place when those characters are teenagers doesn't mean the experiences represented aren't relevant to people outside of that age bracket." & "Even as an adult, I often reflect on my teen years. I don't think I'm alone in that."

But does this mean that Adults who read YA novels are juvenile and immature? Well to answer that we need to look what draws older readers into the YA book genre.

- First: idealism. Young adult books are brimming with it.
- Second: intensity. Young adult books don't skimp on the emotional drama.

- Todd Krueger, president of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). says "I believe many adults like the coming-of-age nature of YA," & "It allows adult readers a reminder of a time of possibility, even if their own adolescences weren't spectacular."

So according to this article it is perfectly okey for Adults to enjoy YA novels. Reading is reading—so read unapologetically. Yes, growing up often means moving on, but you don't have to leave behind the stories that speak to you.

Can you be to old for YA? Do you still reads YA novels? How do you feel about Adults who read (or only reads) YA??
