Leonardo DiCaprio Says 'Some Dark Ages Coming Up' For Cinema

In a recent interview with Esquire magazine, per the Deccan Chronicle, the 44-year-old actor opened up about how he thinks the “dark ages” are coming for the industry due to streaming services.

On how the studios are losing money to streaming: “I don’t want to act as if I’ve been around since fucking silent cinema, but I see this as a huge shift in the way movies are going to get done, what gets financing,” Leo said. “The studio system has tons of content, libraries of things that they can make movies of, but in a lot of ways they are hemorrhaging.”

On how studio films are "becoming an endangered species": “Now I do see a lot of chances being taken for story lines, certainly documentaries, certainly giving some artists opportunities to make out-of-the-box story lines that I don’t think 10 years ago would have been possible. But these types of films that Quentin is doing are also becoming endangered species...There are some dark ages coming up.”

Leo also mentions his dismay in how many 20 year olds (hahahaha) have a short attention span and have never seen the classics such as the Godfather and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest:

"I see something else happening with the younger generations. I was dismayed at how many 20 year olds have never seen 'The Godfather', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', 'All the President's Men', these films are the Bible to me. And they may not even get to see them.

Move over AMC, Regal Cinemas Planning to Launch Unlimited Movie Subscription Service

The service is set to launch in late July, and while the details are still being ironed out, it is expected to have three pricing tiers: $18, $21, and $24 per month. Each pricing tier will provide unlimited ticket subscriptions, and the pricing options are going to vary based on location.

Those purchasing a top-priced tier will have access to any Regal Cinema (i.e., from Valencia, CA to 42nd Street in NYC), while the lowest tier gets access to about half of the chain's national footprint. There will probably be a surcharge if you visit a theater out of your "network" (not final, but around $2-$3) a ticket.

Each tier also includes 10 percent off concessions and Regal may offer discounted pricing when purchasing a subscription for an entire year. What's not known is whether premium options like IMAX, Dolby 3D and others will be included in the monthly subscription price.

Regal's upcoming movie ticket subscription service will compete with AMC's Stubs A-List program, which costs between $19.95 and $23.95 per month depending on the state and provides access to three movies per week.

Movie ticket subscription options became popular when MoviePass launched its $9.95 per month unlimited ticket program, but that ultimately failed due to the low pricing. MoviePass is still around, but charges $20 per month and restricts access to some movies.

ONTD Original: Monthly Movie Challenge - July

Another 10-task challenge. You obviously don’t need to do all 10 tasks, choose as many as you want, but I figured it gives you some variety and allows you to pick and choose movies that fit your taste but also maybe lead you to watch something you wouldn’t normally seek out. For each task, you can pick whatever movie fits within the guidelines, I've added links to help you out. I tried to add tasks that would allow you to get movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and/or Hulu – but there’s also Kanopy and Hoopla (both of which you can get free access through your library or university). Have a different movie for each task – that is, don’t have the same movie for task 2 and task 6.

Brad Pitt Thinks He's Aging Out of Hollywood: "It's a Younger Man's Game"

Brad Pitt covers GQ Australia's July/August issue.

The 55-year-old star tells the outlet:

"I'm behind the camera on the producing side and I enjoy that a lot. "But I keep doing less and less. I really believe that overall it's a younger man's game – not that there aren't substantial parts for older characters – I just feel, the game itself, it'll move on naturally. There will be a natural selection to it all."

Carly Rae Jepsen recorded an album called Disco Sweat but scrapped it and buried it in her backyard

Prime Minister of Pop™ Carly Rae Jepsen recently admitted that she actually recorded that disco album we’ve all been wanting. She instead shelved it in favor of Dedicated.

“I had an album I named Disco Sweat that will probably never be released, and shouldn’t. I started off with a very strong intention to make an understated disco, living room dance party thing. I think that came from going to Sweden and really digging into some ABBA stuff. Then exploring the ’70s. I did ’80s last time, maybe I’ll do this. But it was never that simple. I think there are songs on the new album that achieved kinda what I was envisaging, I think ‘Julian’ is a good example of that. I ended up getting out of a rut, and found some songs that were a little ’90s that I wanted to include, a little something that made more sense than this Disco Sweat, that will be buried in my backyard.”

ONTD Original: LOTR vs GOT

The highly controversial and heavily panned Game of Thrones finale sent many fantasy fans running back to the OG fantasy series that most millennials grew up on - the Lord of the Rings. Stan wars and memes have inevitably ensued across social media and Reddit.

In a certain sense, the comparison between LOTR and GOT is slightly unfair, as the former is a traditional tale of Good vs. Evil while its more recent counterpart is a politicised soap opera that examines personal struggles and which set out to subvert the traditional tropes commonly found in high fantasy. That being said, stan wars are always fun, especially on ONTD, so let's have at it!

1. Aragorn vs Jon Snow

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Both these characters have been compared time and time again: both are the rightful heirs to the throne, both are considered to be moral and just characters among a world of corrupt men, and both have complicated love lives (Jon's perhaps slightly more so). Both hide from their royal originals under humble guises (Aragorn is a Ranger, Jon joins the Night's Watch).

However, the main difference between them is that Aragorn was more willing to shoulder the responsibility of the Throne for the Greater Good, while Jon, thanks to D&D's considerable talent for dialogue, pretty much spent Season 8 uttering "I dun wun et" and "She's mah queen." To be fair, the Throne on GOT was a symbol of corruption and greed, and Jon was just Not Like Those Other Monarchs.

But, it has to be said, Aragorn just had way cooler speeches.
