LOCUS and (possibly Con-or-Bust) are offering limited SPONSORED MEMBERSHIPS (i.e. does not include travel or lodging) for fans of color/non-white fans.  THE LOCUS DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, MAY 31ST! (Sorry for the last minute notice, but they apparently offer this every year, and I *think* it's always in Seattle, so something to keep in mind for 2020 and beyond. Also, it's apparently too late to get the convention pricing on the hotel this year, so sowwy once again.)

I may be in a coma when/if this post finally goes up, but if you need a walk-through of the Con-or-Bust page, I *think* I finally get their page now.  It can definitely be a bit confusing at first.  Also jealous of anyone that gets to go to Locus b/c I am a Connie Willis fangirl...ask her if she's working on any new projects!  But if Connie doesn't enthuse you, plenty of other authors will be attending Locus.  Willis and Amal El-Mohtar will be running the Writers' Workshop, but there will be panels/readings/etc. as well.

For the not necessarily book tags where people might be going WHY DID YOU TAG THIS?!:  LGBT - several LGBTQ authors/LGBT books nommed: Yoon Ha Lee? and Catherynne M. Valente (Sci-Fi Novel), Witchmark (First Novel), Caitlín R. Kiernan (Novella & Collection), Time Was (Novella), Sarah Pinsker (Short Story), Old Futures: Speculative Fiction and Queer Possibility (Non-fiction), there may be more, idk - feel free to point them out; LOTR - see Non-Fiction & Art book categories; Harry Potter - apparently there is another Beedle the Bard book...I thought the first one was illustrated, but what do I know - see Art Book category; GOT - GRRM has been nommed for Fire & Blood (Collection category), also Mr. ASOIAF Art John Picacio (Artists)

Ed Sheeran wants to record all-male (lesser) version of Lady Marmalade with Bruno Mars and Bieber

"This project [No.6 Collaborations Project] actually started with one idea I had. You remember Lady Marmalade, right? This was such a silly idea. I had an idea of doing that. You could get Bruno, Bieber and me on a record. How fun would that be?

"The first person I rung was Bruno and he was just like, 'Let's just do a song together, just us.' And that's how it happened. So then I did a song with Bruno and I did a song with Bieber. These individual songs started happening and it just turned into a project."

Lana Del Rey is still attending Hillsong Church services

Back in January, it was reported that Lana Del Rey had attended services at Hillsong Church in Los Angeles, CA, joining the ranks of such high-profile flock members as Justin Bieber and the Kardashians. Now, it seems that the singer-songwriter may be more entrenched in the controversial charismatic megachurch than fans would've liked to believe.

Del Rey was spotted leaving Hillsong twice in the past week, first on the evening of May 22 and again last night. The news will undoubtedly come as troubling to supporters of the artist who once proclaimed that she and God didn't get along—Hillsong has been criticized for, among other things, its connection to evangelical charity Mercy Ministries and its negative view of homosexuality.

Jon Hamm Has Seen Top Gun 2 Footage, and His Mind is Blown

In an interview with Collider, Hamm revealed that he’s seen some Top Gun 2 footage already and he’s incredibly impressed with it:

“I’ve seen some of the footage, it is out of this world…They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen. We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

Hamm also says that this installment captures a similar vibe while also taking the story to new places:

It’s basically getting the whole team back together. Unfortunately, [original director] Tony Scott is unavailable, but they’ve achieved a very similar vibe to the first one. I think it’s gonna be, for the people who love the first movie I think it’s gonna be very interesting to watch. It very much takes the story in a different direction. But I think for the new fans it’s gonna be something very cool, too.”

Selma Blair wears head wrap, gets accused of cultural appropriation

Selma Blair wore a wrap in a photo with Rachel Fleit, who has embraced her hair loss from alopecia.

She wrote: “We have one answer to your bad hair days or NO hair days… wraps! (oh, it’s been around for thousands of years…).”

Several users criticised the star, many of whom claimed she was guilty of cultural appropriation for putting on a “turban.”

A critic posted: “I have alopecia and would love to wear a turban.. they are so beautiful but I’ve been told that since I’m white and non-religious it would be culturally inappropriate :(“

The actress responded to a number of comments, explaining that head wraps aren’t specific to any culture or religion.

“This is not a Sikh turban or imitating one. And funnily enough, Sikhs absorb negativity, diffuse it. Tolerance,”

In response to another person’s accusation of cultural appropriation, she wrote: “Scarves have been worn by all colours for ages. Relax.”
