Netflix Won't Be Screening at Cannes 2019

  • In 2017, Netflix showed several films at Cannes Film Festival, including Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories. But last year, facing anger from French theater owners, Cennes announced that only films being released theatrically in France would be eligible to screen at the festival.

  • Last year's Roma, which could have screened at Cannes, screened at Venice instead and won the Golden Lion, the festival's highest honor.

  • Executives from Netflix and Cannes have met several times since then, with Cannes not wanting to miss out on the next Roma. But despite these peace talks, they have not arrived at a solution.

  • This year, it might not matter because Netflix doesn't have any festival-ready films. Several of their upcoming releases - The Irishman, The Laundromat, The King, and Uncut Gems - will not be finished post-production in time for Cannes.

  • Netflix is still planning to send an acqusition team to the festival.

Arkells give Juno speech time to Jeremy Dutcher after his speech cut off

- Last night was the Juno Awards, Canada's music awards (I'm Canadian and I totally forgot about them, oop).
- Jeremy Dutcher won for best Indigenous album of the year. He called out the awards by saying Indigenous music was not a niche, and also called out Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his treatment of Indigenous peoples. But was abruptly cut off as soon as he said the word "reconciliation" in his acceptance speech. Reconciliation is still an ongoing issue in Canada.
- The Arkells won best rock album of the year but gave up their speech time by inviting Jeremy back out to finish his speech.
- In his speech Jeremy said "Réconciliation. Reconciliation. It's a lofty goal. It's a dream. It doesn't happen in a year. It takes time. It takes stories. It takes shared experience. It takes music. I have hope. I have to."
- You can read his whole speech here

edit: You can listen to Jeremy Dutcher's album here on Spotify. It's definitely worth a listen, it's really good!

Kat Von D says “I am not anti-Semitic, and I am not an anti-vaxxer,” in new video

In a new 11-minute YouTube video, Kat Von D addressed both controversies. She goes on to explain that a male tattoo artist from Miami Ink felt threatened when she joined the show, went on to sexually harass her, and then when she got her spin off show LA Ink, he forged an “anti-Semitic message” on one of her headshots. He showed it to the network and media. At the time, she explained a network publicist advised her to keep quiet and let it blow over. “Overnight I was falsely branded an anti-Semite, and I had no idea how to handle it or what to do.” She did not address her past relationship with Jesse James who also has been accused of being a neo-Nazi.

Kat then addressed the anti-vaccination comments by saying, “I am not an anti-vaxxer. What I am is a first-time mother. I am one of those moms that reads everything. Anything that is going in my baby or on my baby, I research like a complete and total nerd. After doing a bunch of research and reading the ingredients, naturally I experienced some hesitancy.” She continues, “Since then, we have decided as parents to consult with our pediatrician and just let him educate us and guide us. But, unlike before, I have learned my lesson and I am choosing not to make our decision or any of our baby’s health records public.”

MySpace accidentally lost 12 years worth of music uploads and content, an estimated 50 million songs

MySpace randomly made headlines today to let its 6 users know that all music uploaded to the site before 2015 was accidentally lost. The company admitted that an estimated 50 million songs from around 14 million artists is now gone from its servers. “As a result of a server migration project, any photos, video, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from MySpace,” the company said in a statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your back up copies.” The social media platform peaked in 2006 and has since struggled to compete with Facebook and several other social media apps.

As some may remember, Legend badtz_m wrote an ONTD Original on the subject last year.

Cat Marnell Is Back, And She Blew Through Her $500,000 Book Advance

cat marnell.jpg

Cat Marnell is a writer who used to write overshare-y pieces about her life of partying, drugs, and sex for XoJane and Vice. She got a $500,000 book advance to write about her life, and burned through it by spending it on expensive shit and drugs.

She gave an interview about her spending habits.

-On growing up rich:

"Everyone’s always like, “Oh, she has daddy’s money.” First of all, that’s very sexist. It was always my grandmother’s money.... I stayed with her after I left my job at Lucky magazine and was on disability... [She] would just write me checks.

-On blowing through her book advance:

"When I first got my book money, I rented the sickest loft in Tribeca. It had three levels and a private entrance on Cortlandt Alley. It was enchanting. But I couldn’t afford it... I bought a bunch of nice furniture. I got one of those massive marble tables from White on White, and an Icarus Wing light, and this other Italian lamp that would change colors. I bought an embroidered pillow for $4,000."

Why Netflix Cancels Shows After A Couple Of Seasons & Why They Can’t Move To New Homes

- Netflix contract deals prevent their canceled shows from getting picked by other streaming services. They are only allowed to go somewhere else after 2 or 3 years.

- CBS All Access wanted to pick up One Day at a Time but Netflix said no

- same issue with the Marvel shows and Disney+

- Netflix is strictly data-driven, if a show doesn't reach certain (unknown to us) viewing numbers it's done

- critical support can get a show a second season (as happened with One Day at a Time), but to reach a third season with weak viewing numbers a show need major awards recognition

Florence Pugh reportedly cast in 'Black Widow' movie alongside Scarlett Johansson

Remember that rumor last week that Emma Watson would take on some huge spy role in the upcoming 'Black Widow' movie? Yeah, someone with a brain at Disney stepped in (I'm guessing the director) and chose a superior actress to take the role.

THR is reporting that British actress Florence Pugh (who funnily enough will costar with Watson in the upcoming 'Little Women'), will take on the British spy role against Scarlett Johansson's title character.

Australian director Cate Shortland will helm the movie. No word yet on production start.
