'Green Book' screenwriter claims Don Shirley told him not to contact his family

Nick Vallelonga told reporters about why he didn't thank Don Shirley onstage and why he didn't contact Shirley's family, "You get nervous up there. Mahershala thanked Don. If you’re discussing the Don Shirley family thing, that falls on me. Don Shirley himself told me to not talk to anyone... he was an amazing man. He told me — if you’re going to tell the story, you tell it from your father and me. And also he told me, 'Don’t tell it until I pass away.'"

He added, “We invited them to all the screenings and to discussions. I was personally not allowed to speak to his family, per Don Shirley’s wishes... Don Shirley and my father had an amazing story together.”

'Green Book' wins Best Picture at this year's hostless Oscars, full list of winners

So we had the first hostless Oscars in 30 years and surprisingly it went pretty well. Most of the winners were actually pretty great as well (and incredibly diverse - including the actors, as 3/4 this year were POCs).

But, the moldy icing on this moderately OK cake is what will arguably be the worst Best Picture winner in Oscars history, the heavily controversial, dull, and contrived as hell 'Green Book'. Here's the list of all of the winners - the expectant wins, the shocks (damn Olivia Colman), and mostly some truly deserved wins.

UPDATE - R Kelly Cannot Post Bond, Still in the Slammer - Pleads Not Guilty

UPDATE: Kelly's lawyer has entered a plea of NOT GUILTY on sex abuse charges. Michael Avanetti apparently has a third tape of a victim that he is trying to bring to authorities.

Illiterate predator and mismanager of funds, Robert Kelly is still in jail. His bond was set by the judge at $1,000,000 but Kelly only needs to post 10% of that to get out. But he can't!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kelly's horrible and incompetent lawyer, Steve Greenberg, says that problem is due to Kelly mismanaging his money, child support arrears, overdue rent, "hangers-on" and "bad deals", to OP this just translates to buying luxury crap and paying out for all those NDAs. Greenberg says he's trying to get it together and Illinois doesn't have bondsmen so no one can post for Kelly's behalf.

Kelly's lawyer also got into it with legendary music journalist Jim DeRogatis after Greenberg alleged during a press conference that one of Kelly's accusers lied about her age and that DeRogatis, who has a book coming out in June about Kelly, had an ulterior motive. There are two testy exchanges between the two but this starts at the 8:20 mark.

DeRogatis: "Don't misquote a victim, Mr. Greenberg... I don’t give a fuck about selling a single book. I’ve talked to that woman, and I’ve talked to 47 others.”

And the Oscar Ratings Are....Up!

While these are still early numbers, even the Academy themselves may have taken home the gold.

The awards show, which mercifully had no host this year, drew a 20.1 rating in metered market households, up approximately 6% from the 18.9 last year’s telecast drew, despite white people on LinkedIn constantly asking who could care.

Michelle Yeoh post: Elle Magazine's Legends issue & at the Oscars

Since this post is tweet-heavy I also used spoiler cuts throughout.

Michelle Yeoh is featured in the Legends issue for Elle magazine. Some tidbits from the article:

  • She says she's always hungry. She's also a Leo!

  • On the iconic scene in Crazy Rich Asians where her character, Eleanor, tells Rachel that she'll never be enough: “I’ve never had this conversation with Constance, but something definitely intimidated her every time,” says director Jon M. Chu. “Constance couldn’t get through the scene because she would just break down and cry. It was just so brutal. They’re just words! It’s crazy.”

  • Chu has also said that Yeoh should have more recognition and be on the same level as Meryl Streep.

  • For years she was billed as "Michelle Khan" but after appearing in 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies, she started using her birth name.

  • On crossing over to Hollywood: “When I first came out here, honestly, there was no regard for Asian actors,” Yeoh says. “They were like, ‘Oh, you speak English!’”

  • The interviewer reads this tweet to her. (She laughs in response.)

  • On her gorgeous ring used in Crazy Rich Asians: "I believe in treating yourself. I believe that things should speak to you, and when I saw that stone, it was like love at first sight.”

Some pictures from the article! She's gorgeous.

He lists some charities that he works with (like USF and Retrak) ,but the details aren't there yet seeing as he'd just come up with the idea "off the cuff" and "alcohol fueled".

Some of the autographs he got include: Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, Frances McDormand, Michael B Jordan, Emilia Clarke, Sam Rockwell, Amy Adams, Charlize Theron, and more

Spike Lee Unsurprised by Trump Calling His Oscar Speech Racist

Near the end of Spike Lee's acceptance speech for Adapted Screenplay, he pleaded with viewers to be on the right side of history as the 2020 presidential elections are just around the corner.

That person in the White House took offense to this even though he wasn't explicitly mentioned.

When EW asked Spike Lee for comment, he was unsurprised.

“Well, it’s okee-doke, you know. They change the narrative. They did the same thing with the African-American players who were kneeling, trying to make it into an anti-American thing, an anti-patriotic thing, and an anti-military thing. But no one’s going for that.”

Get Well Soon: History's Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them
by Jennifer Wright

In 1518, in a small town in France, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn’t stop. She danced herself to her death six days later, and soon thirty-four more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had died from the mysterious dancing plague. In late-nineteenth-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome—a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure. And in turn-of-the-century New York, an Irish cook caused two lethal outbreaks of typhoid fever, a case that transformed her into the notorious Typhoid Mary and led to historic medical breakthroughs.

Throughout time, humans have been terrified and fascinated by the plagues they've suffered from. Get Well Soon delivers the gruesome, morbid details of some of the worst plagues in human history, as well as stories of the heroic figures who fought to ease their suffering. With her signature mix of in-depth research and upbeat storytelling, and not a little dark humor, Jennifer Wright explores history’s most gripping and deadly outbreaks.

Regina King, Mahershala Ali, Spike Lee, more Oscar winners get their trophies engraved

Regina King, supporting actress for If Beale Street Could Talk (also Shannon Dill at the end there, producer for best documentary Free Solo)

Because I always found this bit of the Oscars fun (plus the looks on the winners' faces are wonderful), here are some of last night's winners watching as their Oscars get their plaques engraved. This happens after the ceremony at the Governors' Ball (also where that stupid clip of Rami wasting champagne came from, as you can see under the cut).

Winners get plaque-less trophies when they win (hence why the black base of the statue is blank), and afterwards they go to get it engraved. Also pretty sure they make plaques of all nominees beforehand and probably just melt the losers' plaques? Oh well.

Mel B says Lady Gaga 'broke girl code' during Oscars performance with Bradley Cooper

Screenshot-2019-02-25-10-58-30

Gaga and Cooper sent fans into a frenzy Sunday night after they sang “Shallow” together and shared steamy chemistry throughout the performance.

Spice Girls singer Mel B did not approve of the performance as she found it too “uncomfortable” to watch, especially as Cooper’s girlfriend, Irina Shayk, was in the audience.

Mel B said to cohost Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain on Monday:

“I felt so uncomfortable for Bradley’s girlfriend, oh my gosh,” “I would like to think it was part of the whole performance, because there’s a women’s code and hopefully that’s not … hopefully it’s only professional.”
