10 (5) Essential Scary Books by Women

For Publishers Weekly, author Maryse Meijer selects 10 scary books - not necessarily those from the horror genre - to recommend. In the intro to the list she writes, "None of these titles would be classified as horror in your local bookstore, because horror itself is not the point of these narratives; rather, their power to disturb is the result of their unflinching insistence on exposing the horror (which in daily life is treated as mundane, if it is treated any way at all)—of life, sex, and love under patriarchy."

The Driver's Seat

On the plane she takes a seat between two men. One is delighted with her company, the other is deeply perturbed. So begins an unnerving journey into the darker recesses of human nature.

Miley Cyrus is revealing the "new age" reason she decided to marry Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus covers Vanity Fair and discusses the “new age” reason she decided to marry Liam Hemsworth.

“The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned—I actually think it’s kind of New Age. We’re redefining, to be fucking frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship...

Relationships and partnerships in a new generation—I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships.”

'Killing Eve' Covers Entertainment Weekly

  • EW interviewed Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer for their cover story on Killing Eve.

  • Comer loves that Villanelle is not your typical lady assassin wearing a sexy catsuit.

  • During filming, Comer had to eat pasta in a grotesque, childish way, and she actually started choking. The onset medic had to intervene, and she says it ruined pasta for her.

  • Comer says that fans of the show have really connected with Viillanelle's sexuality, and the dynamic between the two female characters that isn't often explored on television.

  • They think Villanelle would be a Housewives fan.

[S1 Spoilers]

  • Oh says that she worked through the S1 finale with creator/writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and originally it was set to go the other way, but Sandra Oh didn't think it felt right. They play-acted through it, and felt that Eve stabbing Villanelle set up a lot of interesting questions - why is she doing this? Why did Villanelle let her do it? Why did Eve remove the knife?

Indie Film Release Guide: February 22nd [An ONTD Original]

ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

I will tell you right now: unless you are pumped to see the latest How to Train Your Dragon movie, this weekend is pretty underwhelming for new films. I’m guessing that this is a result of the Academy Awards happening on Sunday, plus the fact that it’s the last weekend in the overall terrible movie month of February. Maybe think of this as a weekend to catch up on some recent films you haven’t gotten around to yet!

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia and Disney. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have just opened near you: February 15th, February 8th, and February 1st.

If you want to share your movie watching habits and ratings with other ONTDers, please share your letterboxd handle in the comments. It’s a great site to keep track of films for the ONTD movie challenge!

Miley Cyrus Is Going Back to Her Hip-hop Roots

On her new album: “There’s psychedelic and pop elements, there’s more hip-hop-leaning records. In the same way I like to kind of just be genderless, I like feeling genre-less.”

In 2017 she said of that phase: “I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little.” She added, “It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock’ — I am so not that.”

Kendrick Lamar and SZA will not be performing (and it seems like not attending either) at the Oscars

Ending all speculation, it's now confirmed that Kendrick Lamar and SZA will not be performing their Oscar nominated song from 'Black Panther', “All the Stars”, and there are no plans to have anyone else perform it. This means that only four of the five original song numbers will be sung live this Sunday.

Variety's saying that 'logistics and timing' are the reasons they won't perform.

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper will perform 'Shallow'; Gillian Welch and David Rowlings will perform 'When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings'; Bette Midler will perform 'The Place Where Lost Things Go'; and Jennifer Hudson will perform 'I’ll Fight' live on Sunday's telecast.

Chloe Grace Moretz talks 'Greta' and how isolation can turn sinister

Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz star as two women who form a needed bond in NYC, but Frances (Moretz) realizes Greta (Huppert) is who not she seems. Frances gets help from best friend , Erica (Maika Monroe), to keep Greta and her escalating obsession the hell away.

"This story is like Fatal Attraction, it's like Basic Instinct, it's like Single White Female, but it's not about a man and a woman," Moretz said before the film screening. "It's not about this sexual, sordid relationship. It's about this almost cosmic star-crossing of two lost souls and how you can let this darkness into your heart from loss and loneliness."

Director Neil Jordan touched on how the city is a crowded but lonely place. "I think people are lonely in the city," said Jordan. "And the film is about isolation — about how grotesque the idea can become. We live in a world of isolation. Despite all of the social media, actually because of it in a way, because of all these ways in which we communicate looking at a phone, we get more and more isolated."

Armie Hammer talks white privilege, straight actors playing gay roles, and blackface

Actor Armie Hammer chats with The Independent. The conversation starts off about white privilege. During the interview he checks his privilege and says, “Yeah, I mean there’s things all the time that I catch myself doing. Case in point, sitting here with my feet on the table. I mean like, I’m just being comfortable and relaxed, but like ... There are things all the time that I catch myself doing and I think, ‘Wait a second, is this white privilege? Yeah, I think it is. Look at what I’m doing. Yeesh’.”

The interviewer then brings up actor Darren Criss and his stance on no longer accepting gay roles because he didn’t want to be “another straight boy taking a gay man’s role.” Armie admits he never thought about that while playing those roles and that he would hate to think he could only play certain roles that fit who he is.

He goes on to compare it to blackface saying, “That being said, the conversation is different now. People are asking, should straight actors take LGBTQA roles? I don’t know. I’m certainly not the authority on that. But we are a much more sensitive and evolved world now than ... I mean look, people used to don black face in movies and that was acceptable, and now we say, ‘no, you can’t f**king do that’. And I think that’s right, I completely agree with that, but I don’t know. I guess the answer is – I don’t know.”

Jussie Smollett maintains innocence, apologizes to Empire cast and crew

Empire actor Jussie Smollett is continuing to maintain his innocence and apologized to the entire cast and crew on Thursday saying, “I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls. I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you, you are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this.”

His legal team also released a statement: “Today we witnessed an organized law enforcement spectacle that has no place in the American legal system. The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a mayoral election. Mr. Smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence and feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing.”

Text messages and phone records between Smollett and brothers Ola and Abel Osundairo were detailed this morning in court documents which read, “Might need your help on the low. You around to meet up and talk face-to-face?” Smollett had allegedly texted Abel this on January 25th.

If convicted, Smollett could face up to three years in prison for allegedly filing a false police report. He is due back in court on March 14th.
