Significant Increase In Representation For Ladies & PoC In Top Grossing Films Of 2018

You can thank Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asians, Aquaman, and Into The Spider-verse, I'm sure.

Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Anneberg Inclusion Initiative found that Out of the top-100 Grossing films of 2018....

  • 40 films featured a lady in a lead or co-lead role over 2017's 32.

  • 28 movies had a lead or co-lead from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.

  • 11 films featured a WOC from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.

  • This was a 12-year high for ladies (including white women) leading or co-leading the action.

  • The 4% Challenge encourages studios to hire more female directors (Universal will hire a whopping 1 every 18 months!)

A comment at the tweet source wonders about representation off screen, in below the line productions. Fair question.

Finn Wolfhard's band Calpurnia stars in Weezer's new video for their cover of "Take On Me"

The video borrows the style of the original a-ha video, combining black-and-white animation with live action, and throws in heaps of 80s nostalgia.

The academy has yet to comment on the subject

The Academy reveals which categories are going to be announced during commercial breaks

Last year, the Academy announced that several categories would be announced during the commercial breaks for the 2019 ceremony, in order to cut the broadcast down to 3 hours. Today it has been announced that the four categories will be cinematography, editing, makeup and hairstyling, and live action short. In an email to the membership, Academy president John Bailey emphasised that the Academy is "still honoring the achievements of all 24 awards on the Oscars," and that the four category announcements will be available to watch on Oscar.com and other Academy social media.

New Books Hitting Shelves This Week

Parkland: Birth of a Movement

On the first anniversary of the events at Parkland, the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling author of Columbine offers an intimate, deeply moving account of the extraordinary teenage survivors who became activists and pushed back against the NRA and feckless Congressional leaders—inspiring millions of Americans to join their grassroots #neveragain movement.

Nineteen years ago, Dave Cullen was among the first to arrive at Columbine High, even before most of the SWAT teams went in. While writing his acclaimed account of the tragedy, he suffered two bouts of secondary PTSD. He covered all the later tragedies from a distance, working with a cadre of experts cultivated from academia and the FBI, but swore he would never return to the scene of a ghastly crime.

But in March 2018, Cullen went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School because something radically different was happening. In nearly twenty years witnessing the mass shootings epidemic escalate, he was stunned and awed by the courage, anger, and conviction of the high school’s students. Refusing to allow adults and the media to shape their story, these remarkable adolescents took control, using their grief as a catalyst for change, transforming tragedy into a movement of astonishing hope that has galvanized a nation.

Kanye doesn't like how Kim does her own make-up

She might have a multi-million dollar beauty empire behind her, but Kim Kardashian's own husband isn't a fan of the way she does her make-up.

Mario Dedivanovic, who is Kim's longtime make-up artist and friend, held a masterclass this weekend in LA, and was joined by Kim herself who let it slip that Kanye isn't a fan of her make-up looks.

“Kanye is actually really opinionated sometimes. He will come in and be like, ‘You know your blush is a little heavy.’ Or say, ‘What are you doing? That’s not the shape of your lip.'”

Kim even revealed that Kanye calls Mario on a regular basis to come and fix her make-up because he's not impressed with the way she does it herself. “He will call Mario without telling me! And Mario shows up without me knowing and he is like, ‘Oh Kanye called me and said it was a makeup emergency.'”

The letter emphasizes four lawsuits brought by the two men which were "dismissed with prejudice" and says both men owe thousands of dollars in court fees to the estate. Bill Cosby is Enjoying Prison, and It's Getting Harder to Enjoy The Day

  • Has a private cell.

  • Is imprisoned for 3 to 10 years after being charged in the sexual assault and drugging of Andrea Costand in 2004.

  • Doesn't eat bread or dessert in prison (I know many people in prison are there on trumped up drug charges, but I'm surprised to see there's dessert in some prisons. Or maybe it's just for him, because famous shitheads are better than everyone else I guess)

  • Not drinking coffee ("Mrs. Cosby's been trying to stop him from drinking coffee for 55 years and it took this to stop him from drinking coffee" yeah it only took sexual assault and imprisonment)

Let the streaming wars begin: WB looking to pull Friends/CW content from Netflix

-As you may have heard, WB is starting up their own streaming service and they are making sure that they up the ante with their library for potential customers.

-Once Netflix's contracts with TheCW and Friends expire, do not expect for them to get renewed since WB is not interested in sharing.

-Netflix pays over 100million for the rights for Friends and over $100 million for exclusive rights to CW content but WB wants their heavy hitters to be exclusive just to WB. At the moment, Netflix puts new seasons of CW shows to their library 8 days after the season finale airs. No word if this means Hulu will gain back the rights for next day streaming or if WB plans to include a similar model to Netflix.

HULU Potentially Open To Reviving DAREDEVIL And Other Recently Cancelled Marvel Netflix Series

- Craig Erwich, Hulu's senior vice president of originals, said in an interview with The Wrap that the streamer remains open for business with Marvel, and that “Marvel has a ton of titles we’d be interested in,” [...] “It kind of just depends on when they’re ready, [and] who, most importantly, is going to be behind these things.”

- Hulu expanded its relationship with Marvel, signing a deal for multiple animated series, including Howard the Duck. Other titles include “Howard the Duck,” “M.O.D.O.K..” “Hit-Monkey” and “Tigra & Dazzler” which will all culminate in a crossover called "The Offenders", which will all fall under the ONTD category of "who asked for this".

An Interview with Underrated KING Willem Dafoe!!!!

- Willem earned his first Oscar nomination 32 years ago, for his role in Platoon.

- His Oscar nom for At Eternity's Gate, in which he plays Vincent Van Gogh, will be his fourth.

- During the interview, he described playing van Gogh and his experience filming the movie:

"[...] the movie's special. It's a unique film made with a lot of love — made as a personal expression about Vincent van Gogh from an artist making a film about an artist. It was just a wonderful role. One of the beautiful things is it will help for it to be seen more widely.

People think they know about van Gogh, but this gives a whole different take on him. Julian somehow was able to get around this kind of cartoon of van Gogh as the tortured loser artist who didn't sell a painting. He was able to tap into the joyous aspect of making the paintings, without going against the information we have. He was really able to tap into the joy this man must have felt in his prolific — troubled but prolific — years of almost a painting a day toward the end of his life."
