Jake Graf and Hannah Winterbourne express their frustrations with UK surrogacy laws

Jake Graf ("Colette", "The Danish Girl") and Hannah Winterbourne are ready to expand their family. The couple recently guested on ITV's "Lorraine" to discuss their plans. However, UK surrogacy laws might make things more difficult than Jake and Hannah would like.

A surrogate in the UK is not legally required to give up her baby after birth. Instead, she is the child's legal mother and retains all rights that run with that designation until legal parenthood is transferred, either by parental order or adoption.

“The law is set up so you can’t put anything into stone prior to the baby being born, so there’s a worry from both sides,” Hannah said. “Intended parents like Jake and I are worried that a potential surrogate could get attached to the baby and not want to give it over.

“[It’s] terrifying," Jake added. "All our friends are trying and we can’t try. So we are in this sort of weird space of hoping that some kind stranger, who will hopefully become a friend, will come to us and say ‘I would like to work with you and I would like to help you’."

Do you think surrogacy should be legal?

Yes, including paid surrogacy/surrogacy for profit.
Yes, but surrogates should only be reimbursed for expenses related to the pregnancy.
Yes, but they should not be paid.
Yes, but only under certain conditions that I'll explain in the comments.
No, except for a few exceptions I'll explain in the comments.
No, not ever.
No, women's bodies are not commodities.
No, and I'll explain in the comments why.

Taika Waititi Confirms He Won't Direct 'Guardians 3': 'That's James's Film'

While promoting his new show 'What We Do in the Shadows', Taika Waititi was asked about the rumors that Marvel was looking at him to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“Nope. Not doing that movie. I’m hanging out with [Marvel] still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. I want to do another movie. For me, that’s James’ film. Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad.’”

He added that there was never any talk with Marvel with him directing it.

Shawn Mendes accidentally liked a transphobic joke

A fan account for Shawn Mendes noticed that the “In My Blood” singer had liked a transphobic joke on Twitter. The fan wrote, “that has to have been an accident. shawn had supported teddy since the end of time so it don’t add up.” They immediately tweeted Shawn demanding he unlike the tweet and apologize. Mendes replied and apologized saying, “Must of accidentally liked it scrolling down a feed, you know me & I’d never. Sorry.”

As most know, Teddy Geiger is Shawn’s friend and producer who recently transitioned so the like on Twitter caused a lot of panic and confusion with some fans demanding an apology. The joke in question however was never pointed out nor did anyone share a screenshot of it.

Ryan Gosling used the "Crazy, Stupid, Love" Dirty Dancing move in real life

The famous Dirty Dancing scene in Crazy, Stupid, Love, where Ryan Gosling's character admits to Emma Stone's character that the iconic movie lift was a key part of his seduction routine, was inspired by Ryan Gosling's real life. In the original script, Gosling's Jacob wooed Stone's Hannah with a look. That all changed when the writers met with Gosling and he told them a story of once using the Dirty Dancing lift to impress a girl.

The writers thought the story to be so outlandish and hilarious that they put it in the script, much to Gosling's embarrassment (and he's surely thrilled they're telling the story now!). They said the scene itself was dangerous but since Gosling was a trained dancer, he did it with ease. Emma Stone was another story...

Much more Crazy, Stupid, Love trivia at the source. Do y'all love this movie?

Notes from a Black Woman's Diary

Relatively unknown during her life, the artist, filmmaker, and writer Kathleen Collins emerged on the literary scene in 2016 with the posthumous publication of the short story collection Whatever Happened to Interracial Love? Said Zadie Smith, “To be this good and yet to be ignored is shameful, but her rediscovery is a great piece of luck for us.”

That rediscovery continues in Notes from a Black Woman’s Diary, which spans genres to reveal the breadth and depth of the late author’s talent. The compilation is anchored by more of Collins’s short stories, which, striking and powerful in their brevity, reveal the ways in which relationships are both formed and come undone. Also collected here is the work Collins wrote for the screen and stage: the screenplay of her film Losing Ground, in which a professor discovers that the student film she’s agreed to act in has uncomfortable parallels to her own life; and the script for The Brothers, a play about the potent effects of sexism and racism on a midcentury middle-class black family. And finally, it is in Collins’s raw and prescient diaries that her nascent ideas about race, gender, marriage, and motherhood first play out on the page.

On Noah booking more roles than her: “I’ve been working 14 to 15 hours a day every single day [for Deadly Class?]. I can’t audition. I’m in contracts. I’m on hold for things. He wasn’t shooting a show, right? I like to believe that if I hadn’t been busy and I was out here in Hollywood hustling and doing just as much as Noah was doing in terms of publicity and auditioning and meetings, I would hope that we’d be going up like this together.”

On handling her new fame: “I had a week of transition where I was like, ‘I have to be okay with it. This is my new reality.’ [after being recognized in a gym while partially undressed and her publicist telling her that she couldn't be nude at saunas anymore]. I know how many people are looking to me. I’ve had so many little Asian girls and older Asian women come up to me. Because of that, I’m really aware and proud of who I am and what I look like.”

On fueling irl dating rumors between her and Noah: “Noah and I definitely encouraged the speculation. But it’s because we believe in the story and the characters and we genuinely love each other. You can truly love someone in a very platonic way.” But she's since opened up more about her actual boyfriend, who she met at a 2015 Emmy nominees party, so as to futilely lessen the online hate he gets from her tinhatters. Anonymous Oscar Ballot

- Voting for Green Book for Best Picture.
- Is into the idea of Popular Film Category.
- Thinks Crazy Rich Asians should be nominated, not because it's the best but because it's a popular film.
- Compares Green Book to former Senator Al Franken? Says Franken shouldn't have resigned and that the "smears" against Green Book backfired and only caused people to support it more (in case you missed it: Viggo is racist, the writer is racist, and the director continually flashed his dick on past sets). Doesn't understand the criticism about Green Book being a white savior film, thinks it only makes sense for the enemy to be the person who leads you into enemy territory.
- Applauds Bohemian Rhapsody for ignoring the "smears" and thinks Rami has handled it perfectly. Voting for Viggo for Best Actor, but loved Bohemian and Rami.
- Isn't surprised by Bryan Singer allegations, thinks he should remain the credited director because he directed the movie, but also says that he should have never gotten this far if the allegations are true.
- Liked Bradley Coopers hair in A Star is Born but hated the movie. Doesn't think Lady Gaga deserves a nomination.
- Didn't like Roma, voting for Farrelly for Best Director until they're told that he wasn't nominated, so is voting for Adam McKay for Vice.
- Was confused by The Favourite
- Voting for Richard E. Grant for Supporting Actor. Thinks Mahershala Ali is in the wrong category, should be in lead and if he was in lead they'd have voted for him.
- Thought A Quiet Place was gonna be the Get Out of this year? Wanted to vote for Emily Blunt for Supporting and Mary Poppins, but neither performance was nominated. Probably going to vote for Regina King, but could be swayed to Emma Stone.
- Says "Denzel Washingtons son" didn't deserve a nomination and that Adam Driver made BlacKkKlansman work on a "bipartisan level" (aka, he's white).
- Says BlacKkKlansman, Get Out, and Black Panther don't slap you over the head with a message, like The Hate U Give does.
- Didn't watch At Eternity's Gate but loved Loving Vincent?
- Loves Damien Chazelle but thought First Man was slow. Thinks Gosling did well portraying someone with no personality.
- Loved Vice because it had personality.

Authors Marlon James and Victor LaValle interview each other about speculative literature & more

Both authors each have a new book hitting shelves today.
Black Leopard, Red Wolf by James (his follow-up to the Man Booker Prize–winning A Brief History of Seven Killings)
A People’s Future of the United States is a speculative anthology co-edited by LaValle.

They were both interviewed together for Vulture. Some tidbits:

  • James: "There are so many writers now who’ve been blurring the line between so-called literary and so-called genre that they become almost meaningless."

  • LaValle: "Literary realism demands that everybody agree on what real life is — and it is really a very specific subset of American or European life [...] I love reading the fantasy of middle-class life in Connecticut, because I’ve never lived that before. Do you all really cheat this much? That to me is like, Wow!"

  • The authors discuss what they like about each other's work.

  • James responds to the idea that "Black Leopard, Red Wolf is the African Game of Thrones" (he had said it in an interview as a joke). He also brings up that it was hard to find publishers for the book.

  • They discuss what made them switch from literary realism to genre writing, and writing in a genre that has been predominantly white.

It's a good interview, read the whole thing!

James Brown and His Possibly Suspicious Death

And the plot thickens

James Brown died at the age of 73, early on Christmas morning in 2006, ostensibly due to a heart attack and fluid in the lungs

Based on interviews with 140 people, CNN put together a 3-part series The Circus Singer and the Godfather of Soul

The investigation not only delves into the alleged claims surrounding Brown's death, but also the 1996 death of Adrienne Brown, his third wife. Adrienne died ostensibly due to complications from plastic surgery.

CNN began investigating in 2017 after Jacque Hollander, a circus singer, alleged that she had info regarding his death. She had worked with him as a singer in the 1980s and alleged that he assaulted her. She began collecting evidence related to him and his associates, which spanned 30 years.

People close to Brown have said they want an autopsy or criminal investigation. The dr who signed the death certificate was [paraphrased] bewildered that his health changed so quickly to result in death. The dr requested an autopsy, but one of Brown's daughter declined. When asked if Brown's remains are in the crypt, a different Brown daughter declined to confirm.

Some tidbits of the expansive investigation: 9 states, +10K pages of police and court records, 1300 pgs of text messages, and a woman's shoe.

Brie Larson Interview for InStyle

Actor, writer and director Brie Larson is gearing up for the soon to be hit film Captain Marvel and is in full promo mode. Some quotes from the interview below.

On why she was attracted to the Captain Marvel role:
“She didn’t apologize for herself,” Larson explains. “I felt like that was a really valuable trait, because she is incredibly flawed and makes a lot of mistakes … and has to ask to atone for them, and that is super valuable. She’s not ever shrinking herself down.”

“The movie was the biggest and best opportunity I could have ever asked for,” Larson says. “It was, like, my superpower. This could be my form of activism: doing a film that can play all over the world and be in more places than I can be physically.”

Speaking about her training for the role (intense physical training for nine months and was eventually able to dead-lift over 200 pounds and hip-thrust over 400 pounds):
“The movie is not really going to look any different with the fact that I can actually lift 225 pounds. It doesn’t matter to anyone else, but it did to me,” she says with a sense of pride. “Breaking that boundary of what it means for a woman to be muscular and strong and own your body and use it as a tool, that felt meaningful.”

Using her celebrity as a platform to push for social change:
“Inclusion has to be a choice; it’s not happening naturally,” Larson says bluntly. “You really have to fight for it.”

“My next goal is to start a school to train people in various jobs,” she says. “There are so many great jobs. You like the weird alien blasters? You could be the one who makes them. We need young people to carry on this tradition in moviemaking, and it would be so great if we had more diversity coming in through that.”

“I don’t want to be successful surrounded by a bunch of people who look like me. That doesn’t feel like success at all.” She’s already started with her upcoming film, Just Mercy. It’s one of Warner Bros.’ first movies to implement her and co-star Michael B. Jordan’s inclusion riders. “I had been acting for 20 years … and it was the first time I had [a majority] of people of color on my team,” she says.

Liam Neeson addresses the controversial headlines

He sparked a huge controversy after saying he wanted to brutally hurt a random black man decades ago after his friend was raped. this post

"I went out deliberately into black areas in this city looking to be set upon so I could unleash physical violence and I did it maybe four or five times until I caught myself on and it really shocked me, this primal urge I had,”

“It hurt me. I did seek help. I went to my priest and had two very good friends I spoke to. I’m not racist. This was nearly 40 years ago.”

“If she’d have said a Brit, a Scot, a Lithuanian I know I it would have had the same affect. I was trying to show honour, to stand up for my dear friend in this terrible medieval fashion.”

“I’m a fairly intelligent guy and that’s why it shocked me when I came down to earth after having these horrible feelings. Luckily no violence occurred, thanks be to God.”
He likely would have attacked and possibly killed a man if confronted.

He hopes his comments help people to talk more openly about racism and bigotry.
"Violence breeds violence. Bigotry breeds bigotry."
