The Story Behind the SNL 'Totino's' Sketches

  • Former Saturday Night Live head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider were responsible for several popular videos on the show during their tenure: "(Do it On My) Twin Bed", "Back Home Ballers" and the "The Beygency".

  • One of the duo's most popular creations was their trilogy of Superbowl correlated Totino's commercials starring Vanessa Bayer as a woman who initially exists only to serve her "hungry guys", but eventually has a sexual awakening with host Kristen Stewart.

Merci Suárez Changes Gears by Meg Medina

Merci Suarez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, Merci has never been like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don’t have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. So when bossy Edna Santos sets her sights on the new boy who happens to be Merci’s school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, Merci becomes the target of Edna’s jealousy. Things aren't going well at home, either: Merci’s grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately — forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. No one in her family will tell Merci what's going on, so she’s left to her own worries, while also feeling all on her own at school. In a coming-of-age tale full of humor and wisdom, award-winning author Meg Medina gets to the heart of the confusion and constant change that defines middle school — and the steadfast connection that defines family.

Alia Shawkat interview discussing bisexuality, femininity and growing up

Alia Shawkat was interviewed about her new film Animals which is based on Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel. The interview also goes into different aspects of Alia's life. I've included some quotes below.

Do you buy into the idea that women have to “grow up”?
Yeah. I wouldn’t call it growing up, but yeah. You have to have a routine. You have to be healthy. I don’t believe that a tortured artist makes the best work. It works for some people, but it wouldn’t last. I’ve been getting in a routine, starting to write again. I have to go to sleep at a certain hour. I have to work out. Eat healthy. It just creates positive work and more energy. And you have all these experiences that might be somewhat debaucherous, or traveling, meeting new people, putting yourself in new environments. But you come back and cleanse yourself and put out what you just saw. It’s the mix of both. You have to have the time to get something out, an idea.

Two 'Zootopia' Sequels May Be in the Works at Disney Animation

At a fan event, Tommy “Tiny” Lister (the voice of Finnick) said “I can tell you for sure I’m doing another Zootopia with Disney. We doing three of them. [There were] three Madagascars. We’re gonna replace that. We’re the biggest film that Disney is producing. The last one was $240 million. This one I’m hearing will be $300 million. That’s what they spent on the budget, not the advertising. But the movie made $2.6 billion, with merchandising and the box office.”

However, directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore both denied the rumors of a future film on their twitters last month.

5 (out of many) of the best movies reviewed & to come out of Sundance 2019

This post is mostly because I've been long over this awards season, we're already looking at potential big guns for the next Oscars season (yes yes, always too early). Having said that, I'll point out a handful of Variety's favorite and critically-acclaimed movies that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival which may see some love come the fall (if they are released then). I'm going to stick to the narrative ones here.

-- “The Farewell” - Awkwafina stars and gives a great performance in this acclaimed drama that is a reflection of an Asian-American immigrant caught between cultures, but also invites audiences to the universal themes of grief and loss.
-- “Honey Boy” - The semi-autobiographical take on Shia LaBeouf's messy life (written by him), from child star to rehab and where he is today. LaBeouf plays his own real-life abusive father, while Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges play versions of him at various stages in his life. LaBeouf, Jupe and the movie got rave reviews.
-- “Late Night” - Mindy Kaling's dark comedy take at the evolution of the late night circuit, with acclaimed performances by her and lead Emma Thompson, and the story itself (directed by Nisha Ganatra).
-- “Official Secrets” - Keira Knightley apparently leads and gives a great performance as true-life tale of a British intelligence translator, Katherine Gun, in this post-9/11 political thriller.
-- “The Report” - About the post-9/11 'torture reports' that focused on a Senate select committee investigation ordered by Diane Feinstein (Annette Bening) and conducted by Daniel Jones (Adam Driver) during the Bush & Obama administrations. The movie, director Scott Z. Burns, and Driver have been lauded thusfar for their work on this.

Hollywood PR Trio Launches Reputation-Management Cyber Firm

When you're famous, chances are, you just can't help being a jackass if you have social media, and Hollywood and its related industries are under intense pressure from consumers and creatives to be inclusive, respectful, and transparent by everyone not on r/movies.

Don't want to lose your job, be it hosting the Oscars or directing an MCU movie? Let Paul Pflug, Melissa Zukerman, and Hans-Dieter Kopal of the newly-started Foresight Solutions Group, using former FBI agents, advance tech, and good ole common sense to pull the rich and ridiculous out of the social media fire.

The Foresight team also stressed several services it will not provide: resources or strategy to cover up misconduct or impropriety and any data obtained surreptitiously (aka; hacking).

They'll erase the past, but if you fuck up in the present, you're on your own.

I hope their motto is "I'm Glad We're Having This Conversation. It's Time."
Also I hope they're hiring IT people let me go apply.

"The Woman in the Window" author's checkered past revealed by The New Yorker

+ Article is extremely long, but here are some highlights:

+ Dan Mallory, aka A.J. Finn, has a long history of lying about his and his family's health, claiming he had a brain tumor and his mother died of cancer (his mother did have cancer, but survived).

+ He posed as his brother through a series of E-mails, detailing surgeries he had for his cancer.

+ He claimed to have 2 doctorates, one of which was for research into Munchhausen syndrome (the BOLDNESS omg).

+ He released a statement recently, blaming his deceitfulness on his bipolar II disorder.

+ The book is clearly inspired by Rear Window and other works, but also heavily borrows from the movie Copycat, which he has never acknowledged.

+ There are tons of details, I definitely recommend reading the whole thing if you have time.

Jake Gyllenhaal reveals what's really scary about 'Velvet Buzzsaw'

The art-world satire horror film premiered on Netflix last Friday to good to mixed reviews. Jakey sat down with the rest of the cast at Sundance Studio to explain what he finds scary about the movie.

“It’s a parable about greed", the serious Bubble Boy actor said. "And also what we value, why we value it, and do we value ourselves?” Gyllenhaal adds that the film is a prophetic story, and that we feed the parasite of greed.

Writer-director, Dan Gilroy, said in an interview that the Neflix movie was partly inspired by his year-and-a-half work on a failed Superman movie by Tim Burton (led by Nic Cage) that never saw the light of day because of the high budget.

Liam Neeson wanted to take revenge on black man after friend's rape

After someone close to him was raped many years ago, Liam Neeson has revealed that he once walked the streets with a cosh (a thick, heavy stick) for days looking to kill a "black bastard".

He says he is now “ashamed” of his past “awful” behaviour.

Neeson had just come back from overseas when he found out about the rape. He said in an interview with the Independent, "She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way,” [...] “But my immediate reaction was I asked, did she know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person.

“I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be… approached by somebody. I’m ashamed to say that, and I did it for maybe a week – hoping some [Neeson gestures air quotes with his fingers] ‘black bastard’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him.”

Celebs on Stage: Spring 2019 [An ONTD Original]

A few weeks ago, we received word that Michael C. Hall was going to star in some unusual Superbowl counter-programming: Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical. You can click above to read a review of the 45 minute, one time only experience, which benefitted Broadway Cares and Equity Fights AIDS and was surprisingly well-received.

But Michael C. Hall was no stranger to the stage when he accepted this gig. He's appeared in a number of Broadway, off-Broadway and West End productions over the years, from Hedwig and the Angry Inch to Lazarus.

In fact, many stars of the silver screen have trod the boards - Daniel Radcliffe and Bobby Cannavale just wrapped a run in The Lifespan of a Fact, Lucas Hedges skipped all award-season promotion to star in The Waverly Gallery, and Hall himself recently wrapped Thom Paine.

This spring, there are a literal host of screen celebrities testing out their theater skills. Click the cut to find out who, what, and whether you can score some cheap seats.

Damon Wayans, EP of New Queer Show, Has an Anti-LGBTQ+ Past

Damon Wayans Jr. is the EP of a potentially historic, new CW show centered on a gender nonconforming character.
Out reports the actor-comedian has a history of homophobic and anti-trans behavior on social media.
He called a Twitter user a “tranny bitch” in 2010.
Months later, he tweeted “being on the road during the day sucks tranny balls!”
A search of his account for other anti-LGBTQ+ slurs resulted in uses of words like “fags” and excessive use of “no homo.”
The tweets are from 2010 and 2011, with a 2016 message referencing a fellow comedian’s “tranny getting shot bit.”

The tweets were deleted after Out contacted Wayans’ representatives for comment.

Wayans said in a statement to Out :
“When I was a young comic trying to find my voice, I made some immature and hurtful tweets that I deeply regret at the expense of the LGBTQ community. When I tweeted those comments, almost 10 years ago, I was unaware of the emotional impact they could have.
I am not excusing that behavior but that is not who I am today. Society evolved and so have I and it is something I will continue to do both personally and professionally. Continued learning, acceptance and thoughtful words are all important actions that will help make society a kinder and safer place for all people. You know better, you do better.
I am very proud of the work we are doing at Two Shakes entertainment. The company was founded with the mission of working with diverse voices, both in front and behind the camera. When GLAMOROUS was pitched to us I thought it was brilliant, heartwarming and important. We will continue to be committed to pursuing protagonists who don’t traditionally get to be at the center of a show and bringing their stories to the screen.”

Critics Trash Maroon 5's Super Bowl Halftime Show + Lowest Ratings in 10 Years

Critics and viewers alike hated Maroon 5's Super Bore Halftime Performance.

Entertainment Weekly called it "boring" and "they had set that had all the pomp and circumstance of a slowly deflating football."

NME said "...performance doesn’t say much at all. It’s awkward and lacklustre, completely lacking the soul you’d expect from someone who’d talked it up as the most excited they’d ever been. Of course, it doesn’t help that the majority of the songs in the setlist are cloying, saccharine pop, itself hardly likely to make you feel much at all."

Variety said "For something that was supposed to explode with pop exuberance, the performance felt oddly denuded of joy..."

As far as ratings go...the New England Patriots' 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams averaged 98.2 million viewers on CBS.

Shane Dawson makes new conspiracy theory video and compliments alt-right Youtuber Paul Joseph Watson

Shane Dawson released another conspiracy theory video. It's an hour and 45 minutes long and it already has over 25 million views. One of the people he responded to was Alex Jones' longtime employee Paul Joseph Watson. Shane said he doesn't make money off his conspiracy videos and added to Watson: "love ur stuff btw!! 🙏🏻"

Shane clarified that his enjoyment of Paul Joseph Watson, who's mostly moved on from conspiracy theories like "the Virginia Tech shooting was done by the government" and "Obama's birth certificate is fake" to make videos about standard right wing garbage where he complains about conservatives being censored and is generally bigoted and awful, isn't about politics because he's "def not political".

How The Sound In 'A Star Is Born' Was Layered And Designed

"A Star Is Born," starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, scored eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It has also been praised for its use of both music and sound, which might explain why it was also nominated in the sound mixing category as well. We talked to the film's sound team who showed us how they captured, layered, mixed and edited all the sounds for the scene featuring the song "Shallow," nominated in the Original Song category. Balancing dialogue, Foley sounds, and instruments would be difficult, but the team also had to work with live vocals, which presented the team with and especially tough challenge. What we end with is one of the most Oscar-worthy scenes of 2018.
