A24 buys Awkwafina's wedding dramedy "The Farewell" for $6M after Sundance premiere

A24 has acquired the worldwide rights for Awkwafina's wedding dramedy "The Farewell" after its Sundance premiere after a heated bidding war for $6M (Hollywood Reporter says it's closer to $7M)
“The Farewell” stars “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout star Awkwafina as Billi, a Chinese-American woman who travels back to China to visit her ailing grandmother. She discovers a family plot to keep grandma in the dark about her own terminal diagnosis, and agrees to help stage a fake wedding to give the matriarch one last hurrah.
A number of distributors were interested in the film, including Netflix, but the filmmakers wanted a major theatrical release. The producers also demanded at least $2.5M for domestic rights alone.
A24 is eying a summer release (hoping to replicate the success Warner Bros had with Crazy Rich Asians in August, maybe)

Uber launches its rewards program

Popular ride sharing app Uber rolled out their rewards program this month, and color me unimpressed. There are four tiers: Blue (0 pts), Gold (500 pts), Platinum (2,500 pts), and the coveted Diamond (7,500 pts). You receive 1 point for every dollar spent on Uber Pool rides and Uber Eats orders, 2 points for ordering an UberX, UberXL, Select, or WAV ride, and 3 points for Black and Black SUV rides. At this rate, you’d have to spend up to $500 on eligible rides and Eats purchases just to get a $5 Uber Cash reward.

Other perks, depending on your rewards status, range anywhere from no-fee cancellations, guaranteed prices between your two favorite spots, free car upgrades, and no delivery fees on Uber Eats orders. Rewards are currently only available in 25 cities, but the company plans on rolling out the program to the rest of the U.S. soon. Check the cut below to see if your city is one of them. You’ll have to activate the rewards program yourself within the app. It will then calculate how much you’ve spent in rides and eats in the last six months to determine your current rewards status.

Lyft announced their own rewards program last year in November, but has yet to launch it. Visit the source for a more detailed breakdown of these stingy rewards tbh.

Producer at Pittsburgh TV station fired for labeling Tom Brady a "known cheater"

  • On Monday, a news producer at the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh named Michael Telek included the label "Known cheater" under Tom Brady's name in a video package because he thought it would be funny for local Steelers fans.
  • Screen grabs of the video went viral, and that station freaked out. Michael was fired on Tuesday.
  • Michael is looking for a new job, although he has just bought a house in Pittsburgh so his job search is restricted to the area.
  • Tom Brady was suspended for four games of the 2016 NFL season for ordering equipment staff to underinflate footballs (ie. cheating).

Okay Kaya talks about growing up black in Norway & some other stuff

Okay Kaya sat down with an annoying white person to talk about shit:

    - Kaya on where she's REALLY from: "I was born in New Jersey... [whispers] don't tell anyone."

    - Kaya says she wanted to move out of Norway for a long time because growing up in the 90s she and her siblings were the only black people on the whole island. It was a homogeneous place so she dreamed about moving to London and New York. She says the most annoying thing for her growing up in Norway was being othered. She was very conscious of the fact that she didn't look like the other people in Norway; people would patronizingly keep telling her that the way she looks was okay and that her reaction would be, "...of course it's okay??"

    - Kaya on what it's like to perform: "When I'm performing I feel like I'm in the nude, cry-wanking in front of everyone."

    - Kaya may or may not be blazed during this interview.

    - The interviewer talks way too much about herself in general and seems to be one of those ppl who mistake liking weed for having a personality.

Adam Targum, an executive producer on NCIS: New Orleans was fired

    ▪ It follows the October 2018 firing of Brad Kern, the previous showrunner of NCIS: New Orleans.
Adam Targum (the show’s second-in-command), an executive producer of NCIS: New Orleans, was fired on Friday.
He was let go as a result of a complaint made to CBS’s human-resources department.
It was the fourth HR investigation into an NCIS: New Orleans executive producer in less than 3 years.
The previous three HR inquiries all revolved around Kern.

    ▪ Getting rid of Kern didn’t address the management issues at the show, and then created a new one.
The atmosphere this season was “miserable,” in part due to Targum’s allegedly aggressive demeanor, demeaning remarks, and combative leadership style.
Targum’s most recent job was as showrunner of Deadly Class (syfy), he was fired before the program was picked up to series on April 18, 2018.

    ▪ Christopher Silber, the showrunner, doesn’t want to deal with the problem. He spends much of his time in postproduction or in his office, away from the writers room.

    ▪ For decades, CBS taught everyone that nothing mattered except Les Moonves and whoever is No. 1 on the call sheet.
In 2016, Kern wanted to cast Eliza Dushku ( CBS was "vigorously courted” her for several shows) on NCIS:NO because Les Moonves wanted to fuck her. That’s why she was treated like shit from day one on 'Bull'.

    ▪ Zoe McLellan, who played Meredith Brody in the first two seasons of the CBS drama, was fired because Moonves didn’t find her ‘fuckable’ enough, and that he had felt that way from day one. Kern did not find her sexually attractive and she couldn’t move well.

    ▪ If they want to improve the working conditions on that show, they have to start fresh.

Gaga snaps at Dr. Luke’s lawyer: "Don’t you roll your eyes at me. You should be ashamed of yourself"

Lady Gaga got in a heated exchange with one of Dr. Luke's laywers while being deposed as part of the ongoing legal battle between Kesha and Dr. Luke. The unsealed deposition began with Lady Gaga's attorney explaining that the singer was experiencing PTSD reactions as a survivor of sexual abuse before the hearing.

"I just want everyone to understand that, as she has publicly stated in other contexts, as a sex abuse survivor, and I know this from my own personal experience with family members, there are trigger events, and this deposition has proved to be a trigger event for Ms. Germanotta and she has experienced in the past few hours some PTSD reactions which is causing some trauma and emotional reactivity. So she is crying now, the record will reflect,” Gaga’s lawyer said.

Gaga started by recounting that she first met Kesha at Luke's home studio. She said Kesha was in a back room wearing only underwear. She then went on to say that Kesha told her about years of alleged abuse by Dr. Luke: "What we discussed was, what I recall was her immense sadness and depression and fear. She was visibly very different than when I had seen her before."

Things began to get heated when Dr. Luke's lawyer asked Gaga if she believed Luke's reputation was damaged by the allegations. She answered, "If you are asking about his reputation in the world, I don’t feel at liberty to speak for the entire world. So if you are asking what my view is of his reputation, I made my view of him and his reputation when I saw her in that back room. That was an image that—of something that happened to me, and I felt and knew in my heart that she was telling the truth, and I believe her."

She was then asked to confirm that she has "no personal knowledge or information" about Dr. Luke’s physical relationship with Kesha, Gaga responded, "Yes, I do have knowledge. She told me that he assaulted her." Dr. Luke’s lawyer then asked for further facts to support that statement, Gaga replied, "Well, when men assault women, they don't invite people over to watch."

ONTD ORIGINAL: Your Very Quick Guide to Best Animated Feature 2018

I did this last year, and here we are again; Provided that the Academy doesn't just half-ass voting and give it to Disney, this year's contenders are unusually competitive for the field.

    Dropping the ‘The’.
7.8 score on IMDB, 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, 80 on Metacritic

It’s finally here, the very-long awaited followup to what could be argued as the thing that really brought superhero films to light. No longer were they the silly, corny flicks of the 90’s, but instead smart, funny, and dark.

    And this?

Personally, I liked it, but it doesn’t have the focus or clarity of the first film. It’s a modern mindset that nearly doesn’t fit with the 60’s aesthetic (How are you going to complain that people look at screens too much when they arguably only have the television?). With so many characters in the mix, no one really gets the attention or time they need to grow.

The visuals give the Parr family a much-needed update surrounded by cool effects, but it’s nothing others haven’t done since.

It took 15 years for this movie to come out. But, you knew that. Bird wanted to make a sequel when he had a story that was as good or better than the original. But I guess he just got tired of people asking about it, and made this instead.

This is also the longest entirely CGI film ever.

Made more money domestically in one weekend (180$m) than Pixar's previous summer release Cars 3 (2017) earned in its entire 20-week release (153$m).

CAN IT WIN?: The Academy only nominates animated sequels if pickings are extremely slim, and this year, they really were. I would bet on this being in 3rd place.

    Collapse )

Just like most of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, I didn’t see MIRAI, unfortunately. So, we can talk about some that missed the nomination.

See who wins during the 91st Academy Awards on Feb 24th. Well, hopefully they won't deem the category "unimportant" and cut it.

New Suicide Squad movie is essentially a reboot; James Gunn to Direct

'Persons of Interest' Sought By Police in Jussie Smollett Assault

Unfortunately, the video is dark and it's pretty much impossible to make out any features of the two men. Here's a screen grab from the video that they've released:

Smollett's manager, Brandon Z., told police that he was on the phone with Smollett during the assault and that he clearly heard the racist and homophobic slurs the attackers used, as well as hearing them say "MAGA country". Both Smollett and his manager refused police requests to turn over their phones.

Anna is a sophisticated woman who abandons her empty existence as the wife of Karenin and turns to Count Vronsky to fulfil her passionate nature - with tragic consequences. Levin is a reflection of Tolstoy himself, often expressing the author's own views and convictions.

Throughout, Tolstoy points no moral, merely inviting us not to judge but to watch. As Rosemary Edmonds comments, 'He leaves the shifting patterns of the kaleidoscope to bring home the meaning of the brooding words following the title, 'Vengeance is mine, and I will repay.

Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway & Steven Knight Are Furious With Aviron Over ‘Serenity’ Bailout

2 Oscar-winning stars ought to show up better than an 8th-place finish for its opening weekend, at a paltry $4.4 million.
Now, the movie has a polarizing premise and got bad reviews.

Aviron agreed to a battle plan that called for them to put up P&A commensurate with a 2500-screen release.
The stars agreed to do a full promotional campaign including a junket and as many late-night and daytime talk shows.
They were fed excuses and got a lot of unreturned calls when TV spots didn’t show up.
Aviron wasn’t going to support the movie and was essentially dumping it.
Aviron execs finally leveled and told them that there would be no P&A spend.
The stars feel they were dealt with in a passive aggressive fashion.
No money would be forthcoming and the publicity blitz would have to be enough.
The distributor was hurting after dropping P&A on A Private War, it didn’t get hoped-for award nominations.
