The Cut publishes article alleging Priyanka Chopra got married to Nick Jonas to boost her career

New York Magazine's The Cut published an article on Nick Jonas's marriage to Priyanka Chopra that paints Chopra as a "scam artist" willing to do whatever it takes to achieve high profile stardom. "All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist."

- The writer claims after breaking barriers by being the first major Indian crossover star in America in 2015, Chopra has been doing all she can to climb the ladder of success in Hollywood.

- Doesn't believe the couple's story about meeting through DMs on social media, and that it was arranged by Priyanka Chopra's team.

- Accuses Chopra of pursuing a Hollywood romance to boost her career, and implies Tom Hiddleston was a possible candidate as they were reportedly flirting at an Emmys after-party just before her romance with Nick.

- Portrays Nick as a victim who is "blinded" by love.

- This quote: "At times, marriage can be a beautifully wonderful union that warms even the coldest of hearts, but sadly, this union evokes no such feeling."

Update: The article has now been removed.

'Call Me by Your Name' author confirms he's working on sequel book, much to the joy of the actors

Much to the dismay of most of ONTD, and to the chagrin of all the haters, André Aciman, the author of 'Call Me by Your Name', announced that he is currently working on the sequel to the book. No word yet on how this will retcon the epilogue segment of the original book, as the sequel movie is set to take place 6-7 years after the first movie.

One can assume this is a response to Oscar-winning screenwriter James Ivory's recent comments about a sequel never happening. The filmmakers behind the first movie have already said they're well working on the sequel, including director Luca Guadagnino. Stars Armie Hammer (above) and Timothée Chalamet have countlessly voiced their optimism and confirmation that they will indeed return for said sequel when it starts production (rumors for this is around 2020).

Tony Todd reacts to the 'Candyman' reboot news and shares what he wants

Candyman first apperance.JPG

Just this week, BD had the scoop confirmed that Jordan Peele is producing a "spiritual sequel" the underrated 90s horror movie, with Nia DaCosta directing. Tony Todd is unconfirmed to cast in it and had some thoughts on what we wants to see.

"In 2018, I think there are a few neighborhoods that could use some Candyman justice, you know what I’m saying? I’m just happy that as an African-American man, that Candyman has once again been given the nod to enter people’s consciousness,” he says.

The horror icon hopes that they won't dance around the romance between him and the love of his life. "[Back then] it was rare that African-American male film stars got to kiss any of the white leading ladies they worked with."

The new Candyman is slated to be in theaters on June 12, 2020.

Ellen DeGeneres returns to stand-up after 15 years, talks coming out

Ellen DeGeneres is returning to stand-up comedy after 15 years in her new Netflix special, Relatable, which premieres later this month. The trailer touches on her experience coming out, among other things.

When she came out in 1997, and her character Ellen Morgan followed suit, she became the first openly gay lead in television history. 44 million people watched her coming out episode, which went on to win an Emmy. However, the show also received death threats and was cancelled due to falling ratings; Ellen struggled to find other work until her talk show launched five years later.

This echoes her conversation earlier this year on Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, where she talked about:

  • Being unemployable (and angry) for 3 years after Ellen was cancelled
  • Touring for 90% gay audiences during those years, and being viewed as a spokesperson for the community
  • The death of her girlfriend when she was 20 years old
  • The world today being “such a scary place right now, in so many ways" that it “overwhelms me with dread”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been running since 2003, Ellen celebrated her 10-year anniversary with wife Portia de Rossi in August, and the couple is worth $380 million.

No More "We Can't Find Any Black Female Writers"

Members of Black Women Who Brunch, (co-founded by Lena Waithe), gather to discuss how the industry can better understand black women in Hollywood.

- assistants of color are less likely to be looped in on or recommended for writer's assistant openings.
- being trusted to run your own show is one of the hardest battles.
- they are less likely to be asked to lunch or invited to social gatherings by their non-minority peers.
- a writer on a "black show" who moves to a "non-black show" often has their level questioned.
- they often don't have the generational wealth or financial support system to attend film schools or work almost for free for years as an intern or assistant.
- if they hire one person of color, they've hired enough people of color.

- 3rd season of NBC's Las Vegas, the showrunner said there were too many characters on the show. The consensus was to kill of Marsha Thomason's character (the only black woman), and the guys were excited for her to die in a fiery explosion.
- someone labeled "difficult" does not return for season two.
- it takes more than a couple of people to redirect the course of a character or a story. You can be dismissed if you are the lone voice.
- people in charge need to believe also in inclusion, in being allies and amplifying underrepresented voices.
- it takes a creator/showrunner who gives a shit enough to look past the source material and put that onscreen.

- We're multidimensional and would like to be treated as such.
- we work twice as hard (getting half as much) in order to defend ourselves against an assumption of mediocrity.
- you have black women screenwriters masquerading as lawyers because no one took them seriously.
- we can write for anyone, not just for black women.
- we also have to deal with speaking up when marginalized people are portrayed in a negative or stereotypical light.
- we have such little room for error. We have to be exceptional.

Lena Dunham Apologizes to Aurora Perrineau

  • Lena wrote an apology that said, "I believe you" after originally defending a writer whom Perrineau accused of sexual misconduct in 2017

  • “When someone I knew, someone I had loved as a brother, was accused, I did something inexcusable: I publicly spoke up in his defense..."

  • Admitting she lied, Lena wrote: “There are few acts I could ever regret more in this life. I didn’t have the ‘insider information’ I claimed, but rather blind faith in a story that kept slipping and changing and revealed itself to mean nothing at all.”

  • Aurora Perrineau accused Girls writer Murray Miller of sexually assaulting her when she was 17-years-old in 2012

Today in White Apologies: The 1975’s Matt Healy Clears up Comments about Hip-Hop

Matt Healy, vocalist from the 1975 whose band latest album has been blasphemously compared to Radiohead’s OK Computer was on some anti-black clownery in an interview and he’s now had to apologize.

Healy claims that misogyny has been eradicated from rock music (sure, Mick) and that misogyny seems to only exists in hip hop which he ascribes to black men while ignoring the existence of white men in hip hop. The White Man claims the publication misquoted him (sure thing, Mick) and that misogyny wasn’t allowed in rock music (okay, Moot). His attempt to apologize included that PR ready clause of how he loves Hotep Kenny (translation for the white folks: Kendrick Lamar). His fully comments and subsequent apology can be found at the source.

Columbia University students kick SNL comedian Nimesh Patel off stage for making unsafe jokes

Nimesh Patel, a comedian and writer for Saturday Night Live, was yanked from the stage in the midst of his routine at Columbia University, after students decided his material was homophobic, racist, and making them feel unsafe.

During the event, Patel's performance featured commentary on his experience living in a diverse area of New York City—including a joke about a gay, black man in his neighborhood—which the officials deemed inappropriate.
Patel joked that being gay cannot be a choice because "no one looks in the mirror and thinks, 'this black thing is too easy, let me just add another thing to it.'"

Patel made it 30 minutes before organizers cut off the routine.
Patel pushed back on the officials' remarks, and said that while he stood in solidarity with Asian American identities, none of his remarks were offensive, and he was exposing the audience to ideas that would be found "in the real world." Before he could finish, Patel's microphone was cut from off-stage, and he proceeded to leave.

The officials condemned Patel's remarks, which "ran counter to the inclusive spirit and integrity of CultureSHOCK." They apologized for inviting Patel, and for "the hurt his words caused members of the community."

Mahershala Ali’s True Detective Character Was Originally Written as White

The lead role was written as white, with a black cop in a supporting role.
“I read the scripts. I was blown away. I got to read the first four, and I could have played that second lead, the supporting character. But in my mind I was like, ‘I’ve done this my entire career. I’ve never done that.’ And I’m 40 at that time. And if it don’t happen now, it really may not happen.”

Ali made the case to show-runner Nic Pizzolatto that the season would not only work with a black man in the lead role—but that it would would actually be improved by that casting.

Ali convinced show-runner Nic Pizzolatto to give him the role by texting him pictures of his grandfather, who was a state-police officer.
“I was like, ‘See, we existed in this space in the 60s, in the 70s, [as] state-police officers. This is in Arkansas,’ We don’t have to beat them over the head with the race element, but let’s write it. I’m encouraging him to think of it from the standpoint of how it’s experienced. Racism is not experienced as the n-word all the time. I want to play that part."

Pizzolatto thought about it a couple of days, got back to him, and he was like, "Yo, let’s do this. I’m down.”

Michelle Williams says her fiancée Chad is not racist and blames editing on her reality show

Tenitra Michelle Williams stopped by Buzzfeed News’ AM2DM to promote her reality show “Chad Loves Michelle” airing on OWN. Williams defends her fiancée for the comments he made asking her if she had “taken her meds?” after Williams told her fiancée in a heated arguement, “Well, Chad, because you are not Black you would not understand why I communicate the way I do. Maybe because you didn’t grow up around a lot of Black people.” He was so “offended” and that’s when he asked the question about her medication. The two were discussing the argument to their couple’s therapist. You can see that here in last month’s post.

Tenitra says that that scene appeared worse than it was and blamed it on “editing.” She then makes it clear that for 20 years Chad has worked with a lot of Black and Latino youth and that she would never bring someone into her life that was racist. She adds that that is an insult to her and her intelligence.

How Britney Spears Built a Billion-Dollar Business Without Selling a Single Record

In 2004, Britney Spears launched Curious, her first perfume. But celebrity scents are not always a sure thing. Many of them drop into the market, lasting only a season never to be heard from again (remember J by Jennifer Aniston or Black Star by Avril Lavigne?).

It turned out to be the best selling fragrance of 2004, netting over $100 million in sales.
By 2013, one report stated that in five years Elizabeth Arden had sold over 500 million bottles of Curious. That’s five times as many units in a quarter of the time.

Despite the fact that sales of perfumes with famous names attached peaked in 2011, and have been on the decline ever since.
Cosmo noted a dip as low as 22% in the category's sales.

However, Britney Spears’ perfume operation has continued to thrive. Just this fall, she released Prerogative — her 24th perfume — directly into Kohl’s and Walmart stores. It also happened to be her first “gender neutral” scent.

Soulja Boy released a gaming console and several other questionable electronics

Your boi Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em is back from 2007! No, it isn’t a new self-produced catchy single. DeAndre Cortez Way, known professionally as Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, has entered the electronics and gaming market, truly making this timeline that we're currently in even more confusing. 🤔

Tell ‘Em has introduced several “new” questionable electronics from China: The SouljaGame Console, SouljaGame Handheld, SouljaWatch, SouljaPods, SouljaHeadphones with Wireless Bluetooth, SouljaPhone HT70, and the SouljaPad. Phew, that hustle tho!

Soulja Boy’s “new” video game system and handheld use an emulator running ROM’s and is basically a more expensive reskin of retro game consoles from manufacturer Anbernic (originally priced at $60 for the handheld and $80 for the console on Amazon). All Tell ‘Em did was slap his name on the packaging from existing electronics that aren’t exactly legal, at least for the gaming side of things. Specifications on most, if not all of “his” electronics are the exact same but with a higher price tag attached.
