ONTD Original: Progressive Old Hollywood Movies

Inspired by the recent post about Old Hollywood liberals, I present to you a post about Old Hollywood movies that were actually progressive back in the day and are still shocking now, many decades later. It’s easy to think of old movies as racist and sexist because, well, many of them are, but as we’ve learned, quite a few people in Hollywood were liberals and progressives and sometimes this showed in their work.

+ I’m not saying all of these movies are 100% woke. Just that they tackle at least one socially or politically progressive topic that wasn’t just controversial at the time but still is today.
+ Most of these movies were made while the Hays Code was in place which censored immoral~ content. If you need a quick historical primer, Vox has a good video on the topic. It just makes these movies all the more impressive for somehow making it past the censors.

dir. by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, starring Sidney Poitier (in his commercial film debut), Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Stephen McNally, Mildred Joanne Smith (in her film debut), Ossie Davis (in his film debut), Ruby Dee

Why it’s progressive: Because this was one of the first Hollywood movies to actually address and condemn racism. Like, this film was so groundbreaking and unrestrained that it was feared that it would incite race riots. It was never shown in the South.

[Basic plot]Plot: Dr. Luther Brooks (Sidney Poitier) is a black doctor in a white hospital. When two criminal brothers who also happen to be racists get delivered to the prison station, he still has to treat them. One of them dies under his care and the surviving brother, Ray Biddle (Richard Widmark), blames Dr. Brooks for no reason other than dun dun dun he’s a racist. Dr. Brooks wants to prove his innocence but the hospital doesn’t take his concerns seriously, leading to an escalating chain of events.

“Ain't that asking a lot for us to be better than them when we get killed just trying to prove we're as good?”

Why it’s still relevant: The film doesn’t deal with institutional/systemic racism (although there are allusions to it) but it’s still relevant for its intersectional approach to racism and class. If this film were released today, you can just imagine how the NYT would write a think piece about the economic~ anxiety~ of the poor white folk at the center of it but the movie calls that out for the nonsense it is. It shows that there is a way out of learned prejudice but that there’s no way out of irrational hate.[one caveat](I have to add one caveat about the movie though: The main villain uses every racist epithet in the book. While it does make the movie quite visceral and shocking, there’s a debate to be had about whether that sort of language is necessary to that degree and it was in fact something the NNPA objected to.)

Fox is reportedly developing an animated Family Guy film with live action elements

For everyone at 20th Century Fox, it's business as usual despite recently having studio shareholders approve a $71.3 billion merger with Disney that would give up control of its movie and TV assets. A recent article by the Wall Street Journal discusses the uncertainty over at 20th Century Fox.

Despite all of that uncertainty and woe there was some news about one of Fox's most successful animated TV shows. Fox is currently developing a Family Guy feature film that would be a mixture of animation and live action. The Family Guy film would be joining the previously announced Bob’s Burgers: The Movie and the sequel to 2007's The Simpsons Movie.

According to the source: “[CEO Stacey] Snider has emphasized a revamp of Fox’s approach to animation, bringing in a new partner to replace an expired deal with DreamWorks Animation after it was acquired by Comcast Corp. The film studio is partnering with the Fox television studio on a big-screen adaptation of the animated series Bob’s Burgers, a second Simpsons movie in development, and a Family Guy film that would mix animation with live action, said people with knowledge of the projects.”

Bob’s Burgers: The Movie is set for a July 17th 2020 release date while both The Simpsons sequel and Family Guy film have not received an official release date. With the Disney acquisition deal still looming, it doesn't quite guarantee that those last two projects would actually be made and/or released. Based on the article by the WSJ, their fate and several other projects over at 20th Century Fox depend on Disney and their development status once the merger is complete.

Zayn's Official Statement: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologize to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

One Direction's Official Statement: “We're really sad to see Zayn go, but we totally
respect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been beyond amazing, we've gone through so much together, so we will always be friends. The four of us will now continue. We're looking forward to recording the new album and seeing all the fans on the next stage of the world tour.”

Lost Marilyn Monroe Nude Scene Discovered

  • Marilyn Monroe starred in John Huston's The Misfits in 1961, written by her then-husband Arthur Miller.

  • In a love scene with Clark Gable, Monroe dropped the bedsheet covering her body.

  • The scene wasn't included in the final cut of the film, because Huston didn't think it was necessary to the story.

  • The producer Frank Taylor disagreed, and saved the footage, which was previously thought to have been destroyed.

  • Its existence was uncovered when author Charles Casillo interviewed Taylor's son while doing research for his new book about Monroe. The son has kept the footage in a locked cabinet since his father's death in 1999. [OP edited to clarify the details]

  • This would have been one of the first, if not THE first, nude scene by a major actress in the sound film era.

  • They haven't decided what to do with it.

What do you think they should do with the footage? Are nude scenes ever necessary for the story?

Lindsay Lohan sorry for claiming women who share #metoo stories are "weak; attention-seekers"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After saying that women sharing stories of sexual harrassment “makes them look weak” and suggesting that some who do so are “attention-seekers,” eternal moron has clarified her remarks and apologized for them.

“I would like to unreservedly apologize for any hurt and distress caused by a quote in a recent interview with The Times,” she told People, adding that her comments “solely related to my hope that a handful of false testimonies out of a tsunami of heroic voices do not serve to dilute the importance of the #MeToo movement, and all of us who champion it.”
