Lena Waithe Covers Vanity Fair

  • Profile written by writer Jacqueline Woodson, photographs by Annie Leibovitz.

  • Lena says she didn't need an Emmy to tell her to work - she's been writing and developing.

  • “The hardest thing about being a black writer in this town is having to pitch your black story to white execs.”

  • The author asks when there'll be a lesbian Moonlight, and Waithe says that already exists in Dee Rees's Pariah.

  • Loves fashion; "I try to wear queer designers who happen to be brown and makin’ shit."

  • When asked about Aziz: "“At the end of the day, what I would hope comes out of this is that we as a society . . . educate ourselves about what consent is—what it looks like, what it feels like, what it sounds like. I think there are both men and women who are still trying to figure it out. We need to be more attuned to each other, pay more attention to each other, in every scenario, and really make sure that, whatever it is we’re doing with someone else, they’re comfortable doing whatever that thing is, and that we’re doing it together. That’s just human kindness and decency.”

Drew Barrymore Calls Jake Gyllenhaal Her Least Talented Co-Star

Drew Barrymore played some dumb game with John Boyega and James Corden. She had to either rank Adam Sandler, Hugh Grant and Jake Gyllenhaal based on talent or eat a turkey testicle. She chose to rank, listing Adam Sandler as most talented, followed by Hugh and Jake.

"When I run into him next time, I'll be like, 'Dude, it was like selling you down the river or eating turkey's balls.' And by the way, I don't even care if he hates me," Barrymore said by way of apology. "Oh, god...I literally am doing this because I won't make it. I'm going to [vomit] all over the place. I would say, Adam, Hugh, Jake. I'm sorry, Jake, it was the turkey testicle!"

Christine Quinn calls Cynthia Nixon an "unqualified lesbian" lol

Former NYC Speaker Christine Quinn is not on board with actress Cynthia Nixon's intention to run for governor (previously on ontd): "I'm surprised by this race. It's a flight of fancy on her part... Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants an unqualified lesbian to be the governor or New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn't qualified to be the governor."

Nixon laughed off the comments during her campaign launch party at the Stonewall Inn: "I just want to say tonight that she was technically right, that I don’t have my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs – though in my defense there’s a lot of paperwork required."

Quinn, who is openly gay, has clarified that she was not attacking Nixon's sexual orientation and instead was simply bitter that Nixon supported Bill de Blasio for mayor over her qualified lesbian self back in 2013:

Vincent Gallo is still pissed Roger Ebert hated The Brown Bunny

The upcoming Cannes Film Festival will mark 15 years since director Vincent Gallo's Brown Bunny premiered. And Gallo is still angry over the way critic Roger Ebert treated the film, calling it one of the worst movies ever screened in the history of the festival.

Gallo writes in an open letter that he believes Ebert's behavior during the screening affected everyone's reaction to the film and that is was outrageous that a critic was allowed to disrupt a film at such a high profile festival. Gallo goes on to say that Sean Penn told him the film would have won the Palme d'Or if the credits read "Directed by Chloe Sevigny."

Ebert's opinion changed after seeing a reedited version after the festival, but Gallo claims he didn't cut much (8 mins compared to a reported 24), so Ebert's original thoughts were "fake news" and that Ebert didn't want to be known as the guy who hated his film.

Also in the letter:
-- Gallo states he does not believe in equality, only fairness.
-- The truly intolerent people are NY/Cali liberals.
-- Wishes Asia Argento and Rose McGowan weren't being glorified for calling Harvey a pig. Goes on to say Rose should have pressed charges on Harvey years ago to prevent future incidents with other women.
-- Feminists only fight to control outcomes, not fairness (there's that word again).
-- Is very proud Trump is President.

• It's the first song he recorded for the new album.

• On anxiety: “It was kind of something that hit me within the last year. Before that, growing up, I was a pretty calm kid, super steady. I knew people who had suffered from anxiety and found it kind of hard to understand, but then when it hits you, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, what is this? This is crazy.’ That song is complete truth and the best thing about it is, it’s not all down. The whole reason I wrote this song was to be like, at the end, ‘It’s not in my blood to do that.’”

'American Crime Story: Versace' Finale Is a Warning About How a Killer Is Made

The writer of the show explained the whole point of the show that people misinterpreted:

"We were upfront about the source material. We were never doing a biopic of Versace, because that's this amazing success story. We were always doing a crime story, and the crime story is Cunanan. And what is interesting in relation to the crime story is the symbolism of Versace. What he represents, how he overcame everything that Andrew failed to overcome: homophobia and relative poverty. All the things that made Versace a success compared to things that made Cunanan destructive."
"The finale is bringing together all of these people that were destroyed and damaged by Andrew, and really exploring what it is to lose someone. I think this is one of the few stories where the victim's loss is at the center of this piece — this hole that was created by Andrew."

"You can't just say Andrew was beaten by society. Other people overcame the things that he didn't, you're contrasting, I think, two very different people who have many similarities in the beginning and why one person was full of love and created so much — Versace and this genius — with one person who became such a monster. That, to me, is one of the central shapes of the story."

Part of the finale was fictional, part of it was true.

Ryan Murphy is in more talks for full crossover AHS season

Little tidbits have been floating around the internet for awhile about more crossovers in the American Horror Story universe, like Ryan at EW's "Popfest" talking about going to actors from past seasons. "I think in this window, if you could fit us in." The AHS alums that were approached have been revealed when he talked to E!news in his latest interview and that'd it be a crossover of Coven and Murder House seasons.

"You know everybody involved says they're really optimistic about it — that they would want to read a script and then everybody wants to bring the band back together...," Ryan said. "So I think it could be great it could sort of be an all-star thing. Dylan [McDermott] said he'd be up for it, Connie [Britton] would be up for it. Angela [Bassett] said she'd be up for it. So we'll see. I'm optimistic about it."

With the magic and voodoo of the Coven season and ghost theme of Murder House, the potential is there...but will Ryan fuck it up, as per usual??

Three years later...a #throwback look at The Desired Effect era

Brandon Flowers took an 80's risk three years ago today, dropping his lead single “Can't Deny My Love. This time around Brandon recorded an album that was more in vein of the pop sound he adored growing up from his idols such as The Pet Shop Boys and The Police. At the time, I said it’s a very painful and complicated situation for the family, which I hope they have the ability to resolve. If these allegations need to be reexamined which, in my understanding, they’ve been through court, then I’m a big believer in the justice system and setting legal precedents. If the case needs to be reopened, I am absolutely, wholeheartedly in support of that.”

“I feel that these things need to go into court, so if these abuses have happened, the person is prosecuted and so someone who is not in the shiny industry that I am can use that legal precedent to protect themselves.
