Joan Smalls, Yoncé

Writer/director Julia Hart talks about filming Fast Color with Gugu Mbatha-Raw

  • Fast Color is an indie film about a superhero on the run

  • Hart felt that male superhero films were destructive so she wanted to make a movie where a woman's superpower was creation

  • She felt her strongest when pregnant so she wanted to make a film where a mother was a literal superhero not a figurative one

  • Her and her husband watched Beyond the Lights and fell in love with Gugu. Calls her the most talented actress of her generation

  • Hart is white and she wrote the film to be non-race specific but thought casting Gugu and other black actresses to play her family added dimension to the film

  • Thinks that more casting needs to be colour blind in the sense they cast the best actor for the part and actually look at poc for roles that don't specifically demand it

  • Fast Color is currently playing at SXSW

The latest season of Jessica Jones is about anger

What usually comes after trauma is rage, and the second season of Jessica Jones rightfully focuses on female rage after the traumatic first season. While the new season is less cerebral than the first, it examines the complexities of the ways white women process their anger once they go through traumatic events.

Is Black Panther Islamophobic?

The author argues that the film unintentionally bolsters Islamophobia by depicting a scene where [Spoiler (click to open)]T'Challa rescues a truck of girls abducted by a Muslim man who upon being freed remove their headscarves.

He says that this portrays a negative image of Islam/Muslim men without providing a positive alternative.

He argues that for educated audiences this may not be a problem, but for average viewers it neglects that most African Muslims oppose the actions of Boko Haram and contributes to stereotypes of Muslim men being predatory.

Elle Fanning Says She ‘Regrets’ If Her Decision to Work With Woody Allen ‘Hurt Anyone’

She seemed ‘caught off guard’ when asked about her decision to work with Allen.
Elle would not name Allen.
Fanning said she also made a donation to Time’s Up.

“I regret if my decision to work with anyone hurt anyone in the process, because it’s never your intent to do [so]. I’m a huge supporter of women and working with women and [“Galveston” director] Mélanie [Laurent]. This conversation that we’re having needs to be had for sure and it needs to be continued. I’m a huge supporter of all of that.”

Greta Gerwig Is Planning "Spiritual Sequels" to Ladybird and Sacramento

– In the first episode of Studio A24's new podcast, Ladybird's Greta Gerwig said she would like to make more films about Sacramento. Gerwig told director and fellow podcast guest Barry Jenkins she's taking a cue from Elena Ferrante, “I would like to do a quartet of Sacramento films. She wrote these four books that took place mainly in Naples. They’re so great and I thought, ‘Oh, I’d like to do that.’”
– Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels is a four part book series centered on Elena Grecco and Rafaella Cerullo, following their lives from childhood to adulthood, all set in an area just outside Naples, Italy. The books were recently commissioned in 2017 for an HBO adaptation.
– Ladybird didn't explore all of Gerwig's hometown: “There’s still lots of different parts of Sacramento that I’d like to explore, too. I feel like I have the privilege of being from a place, and I’m really from that place. My family’s still there, and my friends are still there. I feel like I can actually speak to it with some feeling.”

– Writer Yohana Desta also points to other award-winning films this year getting sequels, or "spiritual" sequels that follow similar themes, between Luca's Call Me By Your Name sequels haunting our lives for the next several years and Jordan Peele wanting to do more social thrillers in the vein of Get Out.
– Gerwig has spoken about Ladybird-esque sequels before but it sounds like a plan might be starting to form.

Jennifer Lawrence reveals she hasn't had sex in 'a while' because of STI fears

"I always talk like I want dick, but the truth is when I look back at my sexual past it was always with boyfriends. I talk like I like it, but I don’t really do it. I am mostly also a germaphobe. I have made it this far without an STI. Dick is dangerous. If I was at the point where I could get an STI, doctors have already been involved. That is how much of a germaphobe I am."

Pacific Rim Uprising Press Tour: Charlie Hunnam's Departure, The Cast Talks + New Clips

– Three Pacific Rim scripts were in development for a time at Legendary. Director Steven DeKnight (Daredevil, Spartacus) borrowed elements from all three and put together a writer's room for a couple weeks (with Emily Carmichael and Kira Snyder) to develop what was a new story from the first film with Charlie Hunnam as the main character.
– Literally right after after they turned in the sequel's script written with Charlie Hunnam as the star he was announced as part of the remake of Papillon (2017), and scheduling did not work out. The script was re-written to be about a brother and sister, but nobody liked it, so it was written from scratch for a third time (with T.S. Nowlin, Mazerunner) when producers Mary Parent and Guillermo Del Toro suggested it revolving around Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) having a son, Jake Pentecost (John Boyega).
– John Boyega's name came up when discussing who could play Jake. Steven DeKnight was unsure of how to convince John to join the film since he was already in another major sci-fi franchise, so when he came in during a general meeting with Legendary, Mary Parent had Pacific Rim concept art put in a conference room and walked him by it. John is a big fan of monsters and anime and his production company joined in.
– Newcomer Cailee Spaeny plays Amara, a scrappy youth who gets involved in the Jaeger program when she runs into John Boyega. She sent in an audition tape of her against a lit backdrop with some dirt on her face, hood up, throwing herself around the camera, and soon got a call for a chemistry test with John. The production and press have been overwhelming for her and she still messages John when she's nervous.
– Similar to the first film, Uprising is big on themes of international unity. I imagine how that influenced the film and cast was also done to help with overseas box office with the international release.
– A handful of new clips have been released, including some Jeager action sequences, dialog scenes, and Charlie Day and Burn Gorman fighting their out of an elevator.
– The film releases March 23rd (21st in some countries).

Author Santino Hassell dropped by publishing house amidst msscribe-like debacle

  • You can read about the whole saga HERE. (do it tbh it's too messy to be covered by my tl;dr summary)

  • tl;dr version: Santino Hassell is a well known M/M romance author who claimed to be a bisexual single dad with a difficult past and medical issues, for which he received donations from people. Allegations have come out that Santino Hassell might actually be a persona created by married couple Alicia Torres and Marvin Hassell (with Alicia being the author and her husband posing for the author's photos) who have no medical problems. More people are coming out with allegations of gaslighting and bullying committed by the author, who has been dropped by their publishing house and agent.
