I'm just going to break this down into stats. The top contenders are based off of the winners of 33 regional critics groups across the country (still rising), and these are the potential frontrunners for this year's Oscar race.
Variety also noted that the most critically-hailed films in past years, including “Moonlight,” “Spotlight,” “12 Years a Slave” and “Argo,” did win best picture.
-- Best Picture:
'Get Out' is in the lead with 10 critics' circles' best movie, while 'The Shape of Water' is in second, with 5.
-- Best Director:
Guillermo del Toro's got the most recognition with 11 wins from critics circles so far, and Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk) is second with 8.
-- Best Actress:
This big ole wide race is interesting. Sally Hawkins actually has the most wins, with 13 from critics for 'The Shape of Water,' over Frances McDormand in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” who has 11 (Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie trail). I think Natalie Portman had the most critics wins last year for Jackie, so this doesn't necessarily guarantee a win. ( Collapse )
Fun weird ass edit, Variety had a weird-ass prediction post for 2018, including 'Lady Bird' as BP? https://twitter.com/Variety/status/948214865662967808
