Gurinder Chadha's new movie whitewashes British colonialism

Gurinder Chadha (director of the classic movie Bend it like Beckham) has a new movie coming out called Viceroy's House. It is about the last few days of the British Raj in India and focuses on the Mountbattens (the last Viceroy of India) and ends with the Partition of British India into India and Pakistan.

According to writer Fatima Bhutto (yes, she is related to Benazir; Fatima is the niece of the late PM of Pakistan and granddaughter of former PM Zulfikar), the film glorifies and idealizes British rule in the subcontinent and has a benevolent attitude towards the British. The freedom struggle and Indian anti-colonialist leadership are entirely absent from the narrative, as is the exploitative nature of British rule. Ultimately, freedom is seen as a gift that the Brits granted to the residents of the subcontinent and not the result of a protracted struggle against imperialism. Apparently, the portrayals of famous leaders like Nehru, Jinnah and others are condescending. Most of the Indian characters in the movie are servants of the Mountbatten household and are seen as bickering and quarrelsome amongst themselves.

In particular, Chadha lays the blame of the Partition of the Subcontinent (and the bloody violence that would follow) at the feet of Muslims and Jinnah by downplaying both the British history of fomenting religious tension over the century, as well as the shoddy way in which the subcontinent was partitioned by the departing British (headed by Mountbatten). Even worse, the major riots shown in the movies are all perpetuated by Muslims when in fact every major religious group- Hindu, Muslim and Sikh- were active perpetrators of communal violence during the Partition. Ultimately, the movie is anti-Muslim.

The review also quotes a disgusting line by Chadha who said she was from Rawalpindi which ended up being on the wrong side after Partition (wtf).

Gillian Anderson and Hugh Boneville are the lead actors. Huma Qureishi and the late Om Puri are also in this.

Ultimately, "Viceroy’s House is the film of a deeply colonised imagination."

Chaddha is now claiming that her film is "wilfully represented as anti-Muslim". RME.

This August will be the 70th anniversary of the Partition and the largest migration in human history. Sad that this shit movie came out now....

Kpop girl group does black face.

During their latest concert k-pop girl group mamamoo used blackface to imitate bruno mars. They previously had a scandal for the use of a racial slur during a beyonce cover.

Update: they release an apology on facebook:

"We are extremely sorry for our insensitive actions and use of blackface in our video while portraying Bruno Mars. There is no excuse for what we did and there are not enough words to explain how regretful we are. We are heartbroken to have hurt our international K-Pop fans so deeply.

We love and care so much for all people of every race, sexuality, religion, and gender. We love all our fans and are so sorry to have hurt our fans in the black community.

We understand now why our actions were wrong and we never meant to do harm with our video. We were extremely ignorant of blackface and did not understand the implications of our actions.

We will be taking time to understand more about our international fans to ensure this never happens again. We hope that you will help to educate us on these and other issues so that we can become better people and better artists.

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention and allowing us to right the wrongs that we have done."

Their korean "apology" is much more vague that the posted english apology:

"Hello, this is RBW. There has been a growing issue and misunderstanding in SNS and other internet communities of the video that was shown in Mamamoo's Encore Concert from Yesterday of the Mark Ronson "Uptown Funk" parody video that was created.

There was an intent to show a new and different side of Mamamoo by creating a parody video of a well-known music video, but this has created a misunderstanding and therefore the video will not be shown starting from the second concert.

We apologize for creating such a controversy and will make sure to be more attentive in the future.

Again, we apologize."

‘Modern Family’ Renewal Update

Season 8 filming is over today.
The network (ABC) and the studio (20th TV) need to close a new deal for next season.
The studio wants a two-season renewal but ABC only wants one year pick-up.
The studio needs to sign new contracts with the cast.
The main cast members (the parents) are currently paid $350,000 per episodes and are asking for huge pay raises.
The studio and the cast dont agree on the money.
ABC does not own Modern Family, so no profit from international sales and network deals, the network does not want to pay a certain cost.

Emerald City showrunners thanks you for watching

-Thanks everyone for watching the series as it aired its season (probable series) finale last night
-They wrote the entire show before they even cast anyone or went into production
-Changed things to suit the actors as they were casting and their budget restraints
-Had one director for all 10 episodes
-Tried to limit the use of CGI in favor of actual locations
-Hopes that NBC picks the show up for another 10 episode limited run

Overall it was an ok show. Production value was great.

FO&O's 'Gotta Thing About You' was originally a One Direction single

You wrote your song with South African record producer and songwriter Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who has worked with the likes of Lady Gaga, Muse and Shania Twain. Did you meet him and did he know what Melodifestivalen was beforehand?

Oscar: We didn’t write it with him. He wrote it with our producer Tony Nilsson and first it was a single for One Direction. Then he decided to give it to us. We were super happy about that. We haven’t met him yet unfortunately. We have mail contact and communicate that way.

Felix: He’s living in Bahamas. He’s neighbours with Mick Jagger. We are looking forward to meeting him sometime. Maybe go to his house in Bahamas, that would be fun.

Omar: And yes: He knew about Melodifestivalen.

And for the people keeping up with Melodifestivalen, they will be changing their staging tonight.

Stassi from Vanderpump Rules is Tired of Talking about Race

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Stassi has a podcast called Straight up with Stassi and in the last episode she had some racist opinions regarding the people using the Oscars to discuss race. She and her guest, Stephen from Bravo's "Summer House" were discussing the the La La Land Best Picture snafu. Here's what she says:

" I'm gonna offend a lot of people right now, but I'm gonna do it in a way that I hope people don't get offended. Um...I'm like, really sick of everyone making everything about race. Like, I'm kind of over it, and I'm the one person who's not allowed to say that because I'm a white, privileged, blonde 28 year old, so I get that, I know, but I have a podcast and its an outlet to say what I think and if you don't like what I have to say you don't have to listen to it, turn it off, unfollow me, whatever. But like, everyone giving their impassioned speeches about race and all of that stuff, I'm like, 'Why is always just about African Americans?' Why aren't the Asians being like (obnoxious voice), 'We're not represented?' Why aren't I dunno, like, Native Americans and Latinos saying (obnoxious voice), 'We're not represented?' Why is it always just that and whenever they get upset then everybody has to go above and beyond to then make them happy? I hate saying "them" because not everyone's the same.I mean the ones that are like, out there bitching about things."

She and Stephen then reference Oscars So White and how "it's not about race, it's about acting abilities." Stephen says people will always find something to complain about and how unoriginal it is to discuss politics at awards shows.

None of this is super surprising as Stassi has tweeted more than once about how hot Ivanka is and is rumored to have not voted in the last election.
