ONTD Original - Underrated 1990s R&B artists

Some great R&B artists arrived in the 90s like Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly (I know, I know), and Usher that have been successful from the start and still have a steady career. Also we can’t forget others like Toni Braxton, Monica, Brandy, Jodeci, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Aaliyah, and so many more that started out in the 1990s who’ve had successful careers.

But there are some (not all of them) that had some success but get lost in the shuffle of great artists, so here is a couple of some of those artists:

The girl group from New Jersey signed on to Puff Daddy’s Bad Boys Records that consists members of Kimya, Pamela and Keisha. Before releasing a single, they make an appearance on Notorious Big’s Juicy. Their first single Can’t You See? featuring Notorious Big off of their debut album Total (1996) was a hit on both R&B & Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Soon they followed up with hits Kissing You and No One Else.

Other hits include What About Us from the Soul Food soundtrack, Sitting at Home, and Trippin’. They were featured on hits by Mase (What You Want) and LL Cool J (Loungin’) also.

What artist(s) did I miss (I had more but I took a few off) on the list? What are some of your favorite R&B artists/songs of the 1990s?
I started this way back in September but never finished it until today because I was really lazy and rl got in the way.

Move over, Nicole: Lewis Hamilton in talks to release music via Roc Nation

Just a week after Nicole Scherzinger was dropped, The Formula One champ is in talks with friend Jay Z to release the tracks he's recorded with top producers.

- Lewis, who has an in-home recording studio, already recorded tracks several producers - including Rodney Jerkins, known for hits for Lady Gaga & Michael Jackson.
- He previously said he built his studio for ex Nicole: "I built the studio for Nicole, so she didn't have to leave the house to go back to LA, and now she can hardly get in because I'm always in it. Other than being in a car, this is my favourite place to be. My fortress of solitude."
- He is friends with many artists, including Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Jay Z, Beyonce, Pharrell Williams, Nas, Tyrese & Spinz Beats.

is Zayn!solo happening soon? 🙀

Yoko Boy talked to The Sun and he said some interesting things:

“I can’t deny the fact that we have made music together. That’s music we’ve made for One Direction and also that Zayn is going to feature on my next album. We’re making music and having fun. This is just like a side gig and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it,”

“They all have something to show the world as individuals. They can always come back together and do their thing. I don’t think they will ever split up. I’m hoping Zayn dances in the video for it. He can actually dance, I swear! He does the arms dance and has definitely got rhythm”.

Apparently, he's talking about "One Chance to dance", which was the song they wrote together and supposedly was gonna be in One Direction's album Four.

LMAO, I take it with a grain of salt but hey, I'm HFT.

Forget Lordi, this year Finland is sending a punk band!

The punk band Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät (PKN) heading to the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna after a spectacular win Saturday night in Yle's New Music Competition. The learning disabilities the four members of the group share were, again, no hindrance to their commitment to music and determination to make the house rock

The minute and a half song "Aina mun pitää," or "I Always Have To", a punk anthem bemoaning life's daily routines and drudgery, brought PKN top spot in Saturday's final in the Finnish qualifiers for the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.

"This feels surrealistic. I didn't know that this could be possible. Now we're here! We're really going to Vienna, guys!" PKN shouted out Sami Helle in a post-victory interview with Yle.

As the votes were being counted, drummer Toni Välitalo thought his band had lost. The realization of the win brought tears of joy.

Following Saturday night's victory, Vienna and the Eurovision Song Contest still seemed a long way off. The four had more immediately plans.

"Let's party hardy! Let's go into the crowd and say thanks!" grinned Sami Helle.

"Let's celebrate and do it right!" echoed Pertti Kurikka.

Congratulations PKN!

RuPaul talks his wild and crazy ‘80s club kid days

“I’m from San Diego, Calif. I knew that for my star to shine, I would have to move to New York, become an Andy Warhol superstar and then make my way back to Hollywood.I didn’t become an Andy Warhol superstar, but everything else is pretty much how it worked for me. New York, I knew, would get my energy.”

“Because I was sleeping on people’s couches, I kept most of my costumes and my stuff in the basement at the Pyramid . . . The Pyramid was the mecca for [Lady Bunny and me]. There was one time when I was go-go dancing [in 1984], and I came down [the] corkscrew stairs that led from the stage to the basement, and I was sweaty. When I got down there, Madonna was holding court with all of her friends in the basement. I remember they all looked at me like I was some jungle person who had invaded their space, because, you know, I’m dressed in some tribal something or whatever. She was that classic mean girl from high school who would turn her nose up at you. It wasn’t like she was Kylie Minogue, who is obviously kindness and sweetness. That’s not what Madonna was at all — but that’s really part of the appeal with her, honestly.”

“I’d see Andy Warhol at a club called Area. Everyone would be talking, ‘Oh my God, Andy’s here!’ because he was the god of our world. His mentality and his philosophy was what we had based our whole lives on, which is this postmodern, punk, create-your-own celebrity. Anyone could be a celebrity with the right clothes and the right attitude.”

“[There were] illegal after-hours clubs in the East Village, like Save the Robots. The party scene was gay, straight, lesbian, black, white, rich, poor, uptown, downtown. It wasn’t so polarized. You could see the girl on the cover of Vogue and some artist who lives on the street.”

Dewy complected princess Leighton Meester fangirls Neil Young

Leighton Meester has cited some truly iconic women as inspiration for her music -- Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Tori Amos, Kate Bush -- but in an interview with All Music, she decidedly muses over Neil Young and his inner child:
“I believe in you” is such a beautiful expression, but it’s also kind of sad. It’s not losing hope. I relate to him in this way that, especially as a woman, if you listen to a male singer/songwriter, a lot of times you can hear it, but his lyrics and his childlike quality, or at least his connection and sympathy for the child in him, it’s nostalgic and it’s also a little corny, in the best possible way, he’s not afraid of being open and insecure and young, which really speaks to me.

Lady Gaga, Taylor Kinney and Vince Vaughn participate in the Chicago Polar Plunge

So this morning the 15th Annual Chicago Polar Plunge took place at North Avenue Beach. The event is the biggest fundraiser for the Special Olympics Chicago. Last year Jimmy Fallon participated in the event, running into the icy water of Lake Michigan in a full suit. Chicagoland native Vince Vaughn was named the VIP of the 2015 event but he wasn't the only celeb to attend. Lady Gaga and her Chicago Fire fiancee Taylor Kinney were among the 5,000 some participants who ran into the freezing lake this morning. For some perspective, currently over 80% of Lake Michigan is covered in ice and it was about 17 degrees outside this morning (which is actually warmer than it's been most of the week).

House of Cards’ Vladimir Putin Villain: Creator Beau Willimon on the Show’s Russian Arc

HOC Creator Beau Willimon spoke to the Daily Beast about Season Three's arc with the Russian president and the character of Vladimir Putin Viktor Petrov.

Some spoiler summaries under the cut:

[Spoiler (click to open)]On the US/Russia relationship in the HOC universe: “The dynamics between the U.S. and Russia we wanted to be as authentic and true to life as possible, but we don’t limit ourselves to real-life parallels because that restricts us creatively,” says a cagey Willimon. “But sure, you could find things in Victor Petrov that you could say are similar to Putin, but I think there are also elements in him that are different.”

On Pussy Riot's cameo: “It turns out they were big House of Cards fans and had watched the show on their plane ride over to the States,” says Willimon. “I asked them questions about their experiences because we were developing the Russia storyline for the season, and invited them to come to the writers’ room and speak with us. They did, and told us what they were trying to achieve, and the price they paid for it.”

“I thought it would be really provocative to have our Russian president try to co-opt them, and then have them confront him face-to-face,” says Willimon. “It was something we could do on our show that might not happen in real life.”

Russell Tovey thanks his dad for "not being effeminate"

“I feel like I could have been really effeminate, if I hadn’t gone to the school I went to. Where I felt like I had to toughen up. If I’d have been able to relax, prance around, sing in the street, I might be a different person now. I thank my dad for that, for not allowing me to go down that path. Because it’s probably given me the unique quality that people think I have.”

Ariana Grande debuts new song with Cashmere Cat + tour review

-The song was played on her Honeymoon Tour (with Cashmere Cat as one of the opening act).

-The song title is rumored to be "Adore".

-The tour itself is getting lukewarm reviews due to: the "uninspired, misguided direction" plus Ariana's lack of confidence and "mechanical" stage presence. On the bright side, her vocal and dancing was praised and the overall verdict was that she "did a better job in an arena than expected".

-Standout awkward banter: "Second show ever, and, uh, yeah. So far so good."

-AriDent is alive and well. She is still demanding to have the left side of her face prominently featured in photographs.

ONTD Originals: Interestingly structured pop hits

Mainstream pop songs usually follow the same verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus formula. But there are mainstream artists who don't follow these boring route and eventually created some of the best songs ever.

Girls Aloud – Whole Lotta History
What seems like an ordinary beautiful ballad on the surface is highly complex in its structure. Setting in intricate chord progressions ranging from A, C, D and E to G; the song is composed from 8 distinct parts, with only the chorus repeated. Girls Aloud did an amazing job to deliver a touching ballad without falling into the genre’s clichés and feeling contrived and overproduced. Nicola Roberts, vulnerably asking “Hello, did you call me?”, served us one of her best vocal performances here.
