CNN's Rachel Nichols grills Floyd Mayweather on domestic violence

Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather will put his record on the line Saturday night against Marcos Maidana, who nearly defeated Mayweather four months ago.

The emergence of the Ray Rice video and his subsequent suspension from the NFL has put Mayweather’s history of domestic violence issues back in the spotlight. Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail in 2011 after pleading guilty to a domestic battery charge.

Mayweather was released after serving two of the three months in 2012, and has since been the highest-paid athlete in the world.

Mayweather defended Rice this week, saying “I think there’s a lot worse things that go on in other people’s households,” and later apologized for his comments.

In an interview with CNN, Rachel Nichols asked Mayweather on the issue, and Mayweather did his best to dance around the questions.

“Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion, you know? When it’s all said and done, only God can judge me.”

Anne Rice's 'Sleeping Beauty' To Become a TV Series

Televisa USA is adapting the book trilogy with 'Dallas Buyers Club's' Rachel Winter

Has the small screen found its own Fifty Shades of Grey?

Televisa USA (Lifetime's Devious Maids) has acquired TV and digital rights to Anne Rice's best-selling book series The Sleeping Beauty, with plans to produce the erotic BDSM trilogy as a TV series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

First published in 1983-85 as The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty's Punishment and Beauty's Release, the series is set in a medieval fantasy world. The books center on a young princess who, like Sleeping Beauty, is awakened from her long sleep — only in a more provocative fashion than in the fairytale.

Viola Davis Says Hollywood Gives Her "Mammy-ish" & Small Roles That Pay Little

This is a *different* article from the one posted last week, mods.

New York Times Sunday Magazine
by Amy Wallace    September 14, 2014

Viola Davis As You've Never Seen Her Before: Leading Lady!

“Even when I get the fried-chicken special of the day, I have to dig into it like it’s filet mignon,” Viola Davis said. She was speaking not of meals, but of roles. During her 30-year career as an actress, Davis has played a crack-addicted mother (“Antwone Fisher”), the mother of an abducted child (“Prisoners”) and the mother of James Brown (“Get On Up”). Her characters often serve to “hold up the wall” of the narrative, she said, like the empathetic best friend in “Eat, Pray, Love” or the kindly stranger in “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” Or the kindly mental-institution psychiatrist in “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” the kindly rape-treatment counselor in “Trust” or the kindly medium in “Beautiful Creatures.”

“I always got the phone call that said: ‘I have a great project for you. You’re going to be with, hypothetically, Vanessa Redgrave, Julianne Moore, Annette Bening,’ ” she said, sitting in the living room of her San Fernando Valley home, barefoot on the couch in a gray T-shirt and leggings, her hair wrapped under a black turban. “Then I get the script, and I have a role that lasts for a page or two.”

Yet over and over again, Davis has made these marginalized characters memorable. She earned her first Oscar nomination for eight minutes of screen time as the mother of a possible victim of molestation in “Doubt.” Four years later, she spent months conceiving an intricate back story to enliven Aibileen Clark, a housemaid with a sixth-grade education, in “The Help.” Davis earned her second Oscar nomination but soon enough returned to playing yet another government functionary or military officer. “I have been given a lot of roles that are downtrodden, mammy-ish,” she said. “A lot of lawyers or doctors who have names but absolutely no lives. You’re going to get your three or four scenes, you’re not going to be able to show what you can do. You’re going to get your little bitty paycheck, and then you’re going to be hungry for your next role, which is going to be absolutely the same. That’s the truth.”

Is The Empire Ending? The Kardashian Family’s Las Vegas Boutique To Close Doors!!!!

Not everything that the Kardashian klan touches turns to gold! According to the Las Vegas Sun, the family’s Las Vegas “boutique” is closing three years after its 2011 grand opening.

Kardashian Khaos— which offers photos of sisters Kim, 33, Kourtney, 35, and Khloe, 30, on beach towels, plastic totes, paper masks and playing cards— will be shutting its doors for good on October 30, the newspaper reports.

While the family has yet to comment on the closing, sales seem to be slumping: The shop’s knick-knacks are 50% off on its website. And fans are less than impressed on the store’s Yelp page. “Can I get the 5 minutes I spent in here back please?” complained Mariah R. from Plano, Texas. “Useless, overpriced GARBAGE!” slammed Henri W. of California.

But when one door closes, another opens for the oversaturated sisters []. The family will debut a hair care line in 2015.

Amy Winehouse statue unveiled in London

Hundreds of fans gathered in Camden, north London, on Sunday for the unveiling of a statue in memory of singer Amy Winehouse.

The bronze sculpture, which sports Winehouse's signature beehive hairstyle, a star of David necklace and a live red rose in her hair, was placed in the heart of the Stables Market as a memorial to the singer, who died three years ago of alcohol poisoning aged 27.

Fans travelled from mainland Europe and even Hawaii to get a first glimpse of the memorial on Sunday morning, which sculptor Scott Eaton said he hoped was "reflective and contemplative", breaking into loud applause as the black screen obscuring the statue was taken down and the grey blanket pulled away to reveal the statue posed with one hand on her hip.

Actor Barbara Windsor, who was a friend of Winehouse's and remains a patron of the foundation set up in the singer's name, said it was a great honour to unveil the statue on a day that would also have been the Back to Black singer's 31st birthday.

Apple's big iPhones are a big imitation, Samsung says subtly in new ad

Samsung's US wing was troubled this week when its Korean office released somewhat stark ads mocking Apple. Tomorrow, it launches its own attack. It's a little more subtle. A little.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Apple launched a couple of new, and rather larger, phones last week.

Oddly, it seemed that the company's sudden embrace of size was like a bald man's sudden embrace of a horse-haired toupee.

Samsung owners had, after all, enjoyed larger phones since the days when the iPhone was vertically challenged.

Yet Apple acted on Tuesday as if size had somehow been one of its latest brainwaves. It's clear Samsung was pushed beyond peevification at this chutzpah.

The Korea-based company immediately released ads mocking almost every element of Apple's show. The ads were a little coarse around the edges, not offering the same wit as some of the excellent mocking ads that had emerged from its US wing.

It was instructive that Samsung's US spokesperson released this terse statement about them: "The social videos were produced in Korea and are not part of the US marketing campaign."

Some might have translated that as: "Aaaggh. There they go undoing all our hard work. Bloody corporate headquarters!"

Hannah Storm, A Pro, Fan And Mother, Gives NFL An Earful

This has been called a long and tough week for the NFL. But ESPN's Hannah Storm asked some tough questions on Sunday's SportsCenter that show how hard the week has been for the league's fans — especially for parents who struggle to reconcile their love for the game with its off-field violence.

A lifelong football fan who's also the mother of three daughters, Storm didn't hold back on her emotions when discussing the NFL's response to what she calls the "horrific Ray Rice elevator video" – and how it also dominated conversations in her home.

We'll summarize her remarks below – but Storm says it best, in the video clip above.

"On Monday morning, I was genuinely excited to come to work and break down what I thought was a fascinating first weekend in the NFL. Instead, I kicked off ESPN's coverage of the horrific Ray Rice elevator video.

"Meanwhile, one of my daughters has her first fantasy football team this season. But at breakfast this week, instead of discussing how her team was doing, we watched the Ray Rice video play out again, in all its ugliness.

"I spent this week answering seemingly impossible questions about the league's biggest stars: Mom, why did he do that? Why is he in jail? Why didn't he get fired?

"And yesterday: Why don't they even have control of their own players?

"So here's a question: What does all of this mean for the future?

"What does it mean for female fans whose dollars are so coveted by the NFL — who make up an estimated 45 percent of the NFL's fan base?"

Storm went on to ask more questions:

"What exactly does zero tolerance mean to the NFL?"

"What about the NFLPA [NFL Players Association]?"

"Will the NFL, in all its power, take the lead on the issue of domestic violence?

Storm finished her remarks by asking what she called "the central question: What exactly does the NFL stand for?"

Have these recents news stories coming out of the NFL cause you to have a dissuasion about domestic violence w/ a family member or friend or even a stranger, ONTD? What kind of questions do find yourself having now for the NFL & those associated?

USA Basketball wins 2014 FIBA World Cup And Break Into The Schmoney Dance

Kyrie Irving scored 26 points, and Team USA beat Serbia in a rout to claim the gold medal at the FIBA World Cup.

No Kevin Durant, no Kevin Love, more reason to believe Team USA's basketball program is alive and well. Coach Mike Krzyzewski's team might have avoided 2014 World Cup host Spain, but in a 129-92 championship game win against Serbia flexed its muscle in front of the international basketball world.

The win margin of 33 points through nine games turned said it all. The Americans are the first national team to win by more than 20 points in any previous FIBA championship event.

Team USA hit the 100-point mark just more than 28 minutes into the game on Sunday, and Kyrie Irving only needed 25 minutes to lead the way with 26 points while hitting all six of his three-point shots. Irving ultimately won the MVP for his solid play throughout the tournament and his explosion in the championship game.

Charli XCX on treatment of women in music: 'Society needs to change', I'm 100% Feminist

Charli XCX has spoken about the treatment of women in the music industry, affirming that she's '100% a feminist'.

Speaking to Digital Spy at MTV Push in Helsinki about a recent incident where she was asked by a Dutch DJ if she was 'fingering herself' live on air, the singer said it 'blows her mind' that women continue to be treated as objects.

"I would definitely say I'm a feminist 100%. To be honest it blows my mind and it really annoys me the way some people treat women as objects and as if we're stupid," she said.

"I don't know why [it still goes on in 2014] because I personally feel like when it comes to music now women are sort of running pop music from both behind the scenes and as artists."

The 22 year-old went on to express how "our society needs to change".

"There are some really incredible female top line writers right now and always have been. There's definitely this new wave of female artists who are running their own career and I really feel like they're proving a point that they're all bosses, so I don't know why it still happens.

Kendrick Lamar says Taylor Swift's remarks help himself, hip-hop

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
ATLANTA — Kendrick Lamar appreciated Taylor Swift for paying homage to his music in a recent interview.

Lamar was grateful to hear about Swift knowing the words to his lyrics and putting her in a great mood. The rapper praised the country music star for speaking highly of his music, saying her admiring remarks show hip-hop shouldn't be categorized for one listener.

"Some people always try to lock it down and categorize it for one particular listener," Lamar said at the fifth annual ONE Musicfest in Atlanta on Saturday night. "But it moves all, even people from other genres."

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Swift said listening to Lamar's music helps change her mood from feeling "victimized" to "awesome." She said her "go-to" song is Lamar's "Backseat Freestyle," a record featured on his Grammy-nominated album, "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City."

"I appreciate Taylor Swift for supporting not only my music but just the hip-hop culture," he said. "There's really no gap. It's music and it feels good."

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Michael K Williams New ACLU Ambassador #StopMassIncarceration

You know may know him as Chalky White from the hit HBO prohibition drama, Boardwalk Empire, or from his roles in The Wire and 12 Years a Slave, but Michael K. Williams has a new title. Williams has signed on to be an ambassador for the American Civil Liberties Union. Williams is aiming to stop mass prison incarceration.

Williams recently opened up The Hollywood Reporter about the need for prison reform and his work with the ACLU: “We have spent 40 years stuffing our prisons, mostly with black and brown men. We haven’t seen any of the problems outside those prison cells improve, and some have gotten worse. We can do better, and I’m excited to work with the ACLU to push for that change.”

The ACLU's Deputy Legal Director, Vanita Gupta, also spoke up about the Williams’ ambassadorship:
“We’re at a tipping point on mass incarceration in this country, and Michael’s voice will help us move beyond the disastrous policies of the last 40 years. He has the passion, deep moral conviction, and contagious optimism needed to effect real change in a criminal justice system that simply isn’t working.

Williams tweeted his pride in the project, writing:“Proud to named Ambassador by the aclu for prison reform #StopMassIncarceration.”

The ACLU of California also shared Williams enthusiasm, tweeting: “Michael K Williams of #BoardwalkEmpire and #TheWire joins @ACLU as Ambassador to End Mass Incarceration. Excited to work together, @BKBMG!”

The second episode of the final season of Boardwalk Empire airs this Sunday night at 9:00 p.m on HBO.
