I met Mr Brainwash today

Mr. Brainwash is either a terrible artist or a great work of art. Whatever he is, he was apparently in lower Manhattan today, putting up an enormous, garish 9/11 mural on a department store across from the World Trade Center site.

Mr. Brainwash, for those who don't follow the arcane world of street art, gained fame after appearing in Exit Through the Gift Shop, a 2010 film by the shadowy, astonishingly popular stencil artist Banksy. The film, ostensibly a documentary, follows Thierry Guetta, a talentless hanger-on who finds success and acclaim after christening himself Mr. Brainwash and leveraging his connections with big names like Banksy himself. The moral—that art, like any other industry, is largely about who you know and how much money you have—rings true. Almost too true, given Banksy's well-documented art-market pranksterism.

"Riddle? Yes. Enigma? Sure. Documentary?" asked a 2010 New York Times headline. "Is Banksy's Mr. Brainwash an Art-World Borat?" wondered New York mag. (Their assessment, after viewing an exhibition: "The show was so wretchedly derivative, repetitive, and insultingly insipid that we felt it could only have been an intentional prank.")

So either Banksy is pulling the strings, and Brainwash is the most interesting artwork he's ever produced, or he simply lucked into an illuminating subject for a documentary. Maybe it's some mixture of the two: Banksy set up a situation that made for good filmmaking, and Guetta recognized a good opportunity and ran with it.

In any case, Mr. Brainwash is still making and selling work. He's responsible for the "remixed" version of Warhol's Marilyn Monroe that adorned Celebration, Madonna's latest greatest hits collection, and now, this 9/11 mural. If it's a joke, Century 21, which commissioned the piece, doesn't appear to be in on it. Company co-owner and so-called art aficionado Isaac Gindi said in a statement today:

"When Mr. Brainwash came to us with this idea we were honored. We are such big fans of his work and loved the idea of showing our support and dedication for the Downtown community and NYC's bravest and finest right on our building. His piece exemplifies a tribute to the resiliency of New York City and all Americans after 9/11."

The piece itself, which reads "WE LOVE NEW YORK" and depicts a heart and an American flag, isn't particularly offensive or anything, but it's not particularly good, either. That it exists at all is very weird. According to Time Out, it will stay up for the next three weeks.

Britney Spears describes her ideal first date

Britney Spears is lookin' for love.
The newly single pop princess recently broke up with her boyfriend of about 18 months David Lucado after he was apparently caught on tape making out with another woman.
"Well, by now everyone knows my boyfriend cheated on me," Spears said during her Las Vegas show shortly after the split. "But the best part of breaking up is going on first dates."
She added, "OMG, OMG, I need a hot guy. Where are the hot guys here tonight?"
So what's Brit's idea of a perfect first date?
"The perfect first date is going to the beach and having a picnic and going home and watching a really cool movie and then a great first kiss," she told me exclusively today at the launch of her Intimate Britney Spears lingerie line at the New York Public Library.
So sweet, don't ya think?

Olympian Oscar Pistorius Found Not Guilty of Murder

PRETORIA, South Africa — After months of hearings, the judge in the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius said on Thursday that there were “not enough facts” for him to be found guilty of premeditated murder, the most serious charge facing the double amputee track star.

The judge, Thokozile Matilda Masipa, also found that Mr. Pistorius could not be found guilty of a lesser form of murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, 29, when he shot and killed her in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013. Sitting in a woooden dock, Mr. Pistorius sobbed as the judge spoke.

In a lengthy recitation of the facts, Judge Masipa said that Mr. Pistorius had acted “unlawfully,” but did not immediately disclose her ruling on the lesser charge of culpable homicide which would bring a lower sentence than murder charges she dismissed.

The judge said that Mr. Pistorius had been a “very poor witness” who had delivered evasive and inconsistent testimony under harsh cross-examination.

Guliana's transcript: "I do think she has a little diva thing going on. I don't know if that's her image she wants out there. 'I'm a young Mariah. I'm a diva.' Because I think It was at the AMA's she came up on the platform and normally I stand to this side of the camera," she said cuing her left side with her hands for the cameras, "Yo, I had to fight 13 years to get this side of the camera. This is my good side, but I fought 13 years for this, Ok!" she joked before continuing, "Little Ariana comes over, elbowed me to my side and they pushed me to the other side. So I had to be on my ugly side."

The veteran red carpet host advised that the singer be more humble since she hasn't reached the amount if success as her predecessors, "It's one thing if it's Mariah. I'll get on any side. I'll bend down, I'll climb a ladder, whatever it takes to get Mariah to do an interview. But when you're new on the block and you're trying to earn your stripes. You just gotta do what you gotta do." She added, "Try to get a great reputation. Try to go overboard to please people.

Co-host, Jason Kennedy also warned about being "Heigled" (reffering actress Katherine Heigle who was known for her diva behavior).

In a radio interview with Australia's The Edge 96.ONE, the 21-year-old diva behavior rumors after one photographer slammed her for making him wait for a simple photo-op, "It was just a photographer or something who got mad at me because I left to change my outfit mid-photo shoot because I didn't like my top," she said. "I was like, 'Oh, I'll be right back!' and then I came back and he had left. I was like, 'Oh, shit!'" She continued, "Then he came out and said all these ridiculous, untrue things about me. I was like, 'That's not real. That's nonsense!'"

Chris is "Sweeping Jen Off Her Feet"

Still on! Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Martin enjoyed a dinner date in Beverly Hills on Monday, Sept. 8, a source tells Us Weekly.

The new couple dined at posh eatery La Dolce Vita. The Hunger Games actress and Coldplay frontman's time together didn't stop there, either. The following day, Tuesday, Sept. 9, the duo spent the entire day together, the source adds.

As Us previously reported, Gwyneth Paltrow's ex-husband has been working hard at winning over Lawrence. "Chris is sweeping Jen off her feet," an insider told Us. "That's his thing...He writes her songs and loves taking her to private, romantic spots."

The budding romance began soon after Lawrence had split with longtime boyfriend Nicholas Hoult over the summer. As for Paltrow, whom Martin was married to for ten years, she has no hard feelings when it comes to the couple.

"Her take is, 'Hey, he could do worse,'" a pal close to the Goop founder previously told Us.

Once again, no pictures. I wonder how much longer their PR intends to keep this fauxmance going.

Sure, he's gone on to sell millions of albums, date Rihanna and headline a world tour, but the people of Toronto haven't forgotten Drake's eight-season stint as Wheelchair Jimmy. And if they have, someone has decided to put stickers of his face on wheelchair signs around the city to remind them.

The series that rocketed leads Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate and David Faustino to stardom could see some members of the dysfunctional Bundy clan back on the small screen with a TV spinoff in the works at Sony Pictures Television, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

As first reported by E! the studio, which produced the Fox series, is taking out a pitch for a follow-up to Married … With Children based on Faustino’s Bud Bundy. It’s unclear which, if any, other cast members would be involved in the potential spinoff. Fox re-aired the pilot in 2012 as part of its 25th anniversary.

Nicki Minaj (Allegedly) Injured Ass After Fashion Rocks Performance

New reports suggest that Nicki Minaj has suffered a "butt injury" during her Fashion Rocks performance Tuesday night, according to

Sources close to the "Anaconda" singer say, "She hurt her butt when she stretched out. They were like they heard a pop. Since Nicki's butt is fake, everyone thought her butt may have burst."

In the rapper's defense, she has not confirmed nor denies that she had a butt augmentation, however, it is common for performance to hurt themselves during their routines. The site reports that the singer did receive medical attention and seems to be doing perfectly fine.

Wednesday, Nicki posted an exclusive photo of herself with Beyonce to promote their "Flawless" remix captioning the photo "We Flawless."

In 2011, Nicki opened up about her plastic surgery rumors to personality, DJ Funk Flex and explained,  "I don't mind the questions, I don't mind the fascination ... But I've said this before, it doesn't define me. So, I try my best not to focus my energy on it," she added. "Like, if you guys focus energy on and spend energy on it, I don't mind it. You know, people are sitting in the barbershop talking about my butt, it's conversational. That's what people are gonna do. As long as they're talking about Nicki Minaj, I'm good."

U2’s New Free Album Won’t Be Considered for GRAMMYs, Billboard Albums Chart — Yet

U2 are experiencing the pains of being ahead of the curve.

After the release yesterday (Sept. 9) of a new album, Songs of Innocence, for free via iTunes and during the worldwide event at when the iPhone 6, iWatch and a new Apple Pay system were revealed, they are now facing some consequences from the business side of the music industry.

Billboard reports that their new album will not be eligible for consideration for the 57th GRAMMY Awards. The Recording Academy only considers albums released before Sept. 30, 2014, for that particular year, and due to the freely available nature of this album ahead of its commercial release date of Oct. 14 will not be considering it. The Academy feels it does meet the qualifications for consideration in the 58th ceremony, however.

“All entries — singles, tracks, albums — must be commercially released, nationally distributed and available from any date within the eligibility period,” a representative for the GRAMMYs told Billboard. The trick there is the phrase “commercially released” — giving it away for free with a future commercial release date apparently doesn’t count for the GRAMMYs.

Additionally Billboard revealed that, much like Jay Z’s Magna Carta giveaway with Samsung, U2’s free album will not count toward the Billboard 200 albums chart until October. (WTF???) It will only track copies of Songs of Innocence that are sold and it will not be tracked by that chart until its commercial release.

The RIAA have not yet made a statement on if they will certify the U2 album with gold or platinum status that includes the free downloads of this album. It is a decision they are unlikely to weigh in on until the band reaches that mark.

Songs of Innocence is available to any new or existing iTunes customer and all Beats subscribers for free from now until Oct. 14.

'Fashion Rocks' a Ratings Flop: What Didn't Work & What's Next

It was not a triumphant comeback for Fashion Rocks. The TV event, which spotlights the intersection of the fashion and music industries, returned to CBS on Tuesday night and only drew 2.4 million viewers, a 0.6 share rating among 18- to 49-year-olds, according to Nielsen Media Research.

‪That's less than half the size of the audience that tuned in to the last Fashion Rocks telecast in 2008 (5.242 million viewers), and quite a bit behind NBC's Tuesday night time-slot winner America's Got Talent, which drew 9.37 million viewers.

Corey Stoll: ‘Tina Fey is the funniest person I ever met’

In the new movie “This Is Where I Leave You,” Corey Stoll plays the eldest brother in a messed-up family sitting shiva for the patriarch’s death. In the film, Stoll’s character’s primary plot line is that he and his wife are having difficulties conceiving.

It’s a far cry from the bestselling book by Jonathan Tropper, in which the character has a major arc involving resentment over an old injury. But at GQ’s fall fashion fête Tuesday night at The Ides at Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn, Stoll brushed it off.

“Well, you know, it’s a novel, you want everything in there,” he said. “Every actor wants their whole story.”

Even though he didn’t get that, he did get to work alongside a star-studded cast that includes Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman and Tina Fey — and he raved over one actress in particular.

“Tina Fey is a singular human being,” he said. “She’s really maybe the funniest person I ever met.”

NFL Panthers owner breaks down about DV though convicted player Greg Hardy still on team

A Wednesday night gala to honor Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson probably didn’t go the way its honoree had planned.

Firstly, one of the dinner’s most high-profile guests, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, didn’t show up after a damaging new report came out alleging the NFL had received a copy of the Ray Rice tape that shows the ex-Raven punching his wife in the face.

Secondly, instead of just happily accepting the “Echo Award Against Indifference” from the Echo Foundation, an educational organization, Richardson felt compelled to address domestic violence, a subject that’s not only damaging Goodell’s reputation, but the entire NFL’s, as well, and Richardson personally.

In the wake of the controversy surrounding the Rice case and whether the NFL was privy to the infamous video, Richardson and the Panthers are dealing with their own drama in Greg Hardy, an active-roster player who was convicted of domestic violence over the summer. Neither the NFL nor the Panthers have penalized Hardy in any way, which has inspired much criticism. Richardson attempted to address that situation for the first time publicly during his acceptance speech and it brought him to tears.

Bcoop Is a Mastermind

Bradley Cooper won’t get a makeover to star in “The Elephant Man” on Broadway. But the Booth Theatre will.

The outside of the historic W. 45th St. house is already tricked out with a marquee that reads, in a Victorian-era font, “Hideous! Deformed! Grotesque!”

It’s part of the sexiest man alive’s idea to engage people’s imaginations before they set foot inside the theater to watch the revival of Bernard Pomerance’s 1979 Tony winner about Joseph Merrick, the deformed 19th-century Brit evoked in the title.

“Bradley called me and said, ‘I have this idea of making the world of the theater the way it would have been in Merrick’s time,” says Drew Hodges, president of SpotCo, the advertising agency handling the show. “He wanted to make (the Booth) feel like one of the attractions of that time.”
