Why Janet Jackson Is a Deserving Gay Icon

Why the singer is one of the greatest icons ever?

In the echelon of pop divas, few rank higher than Janet Damita Jo Jackson. And as a gay icon, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone with her multi-platinum track record of LGBT support. Yet, for some reason, when lumping together the great ladies in our iconic pantheon — the Chers, the Madonnas, the Judys, even the Beys — her name is often and conspicuously absent. Meanwhile, what has Streisand done for you lately?

Though Ms. Jackson neither confirmed nor denied that a new album is in the works — those Jacksons are notoriously cagey — the thought of Janet’s return had the kids collectively clutching their pearls. It’s time we give Janet her dues as the other Queen of Pop, especially when you consider how much she's given the most recent queen of gays, Beyonce, who was honored by MTV with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. (The same honor bestowed upon Janet herself in 1990.)

Here are 105 reasons Janet is one of the greatest gay icons ever.

Nicki Minaj Is The Only Person In The World Who Doesn’t Think Her ‘Anaconda’ Video Is ‘Sexy’

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Listen to Nicki Minaj’s music and you’ll hear a woman confident in both her musical ability and her sexual prowess, but stand face-to-face with the rap beauty, tell her that you thought her “Anaconda” music video was sexy, and she might just blush.

“I didn’t think the video was so sexy or crazy, but I guess, I dunno,” Nicki said sheepishly of her latest Pinkprint video during a chat backstage at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, where she performed three times.

Despite Nicki’s modesty, the “Anaconda” video definitely caused a stir. In just 24 hours after the clip was released on August 19, Minaj logged 19.6 million hits on Vevo, breaking a single-day record previously held by Miley Cryus’ “Wrecking Ball.” Today, “Anaconda” has almost 84 million views, and it still has fans talking about her barely-there outfits and memorizing the impressive gyrations.

“I didn’t expect that. I didn’t even expect the picture getting the controversey it got,” she said. “For the video to break a record, I was like, ‘What the?’”

Just call them Mr. and Mrs. Pitt!

After nine years and six children together, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have married in France, PEOPLE confirms.

The ceremony came two years after the couple's 2012 engagement, when Jolie, 39, first showed off the custom sparkler that Pitt, 50, designed for her.

Jolie reportedly walked down the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox, 13, and Pax, 10, on each arm; while her daughters Zahara, nine, and Vivienne, six, threw petals, and Shiloh, eight, and Knox, six, served as ring bearers.

Prior to exchanging vows, the couple obtained a marriage license from a California judge. The same judge also conducted the nondenominational civil ceremony in France.

Trailer for "'71," starring Jack O'Connell

A few days old, but I didn't see it posted:

StudioCanal have sent us a brand new trailer for Yann Demange's (TV's Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Criminal Justice) directorial debut '71 (2014), starring Jack O'Connell, Sam Reid, Sean Harris, and Paul Anderson. The film is set to open in theaters across the United Kingdom on October 10th. In the United States, '71 will be screened at New York Film Festival on September 27th, where la_petite_singe will, sadly, be arrested for stalking professional crazed fangirling.

Synopsis: A young British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971. Unable to tell friend from foe, and increasingly wary of his own comrades, the raw recruit must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape. Winner of Prize of the Ecumenical Jury - Special Mention at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Oh Seany my love, youweremeantforme.mp3. So excite for this -- I saw Starred Up last night and it was gr8; Jack was so convincing that a dude in the audience was like "he really IS that guy, isn't he?? How could anyone pretend that?!" and the director was like "lol no he's really sweet."

Ariana Grande Finally Breaks Silence On Big Sean Romance

Well, this hot new couple seems happier than ever since they were spotted kissing on a movie date on Aug. 3 and their hand holding at the VMAs. Ariana finally opened up about her relationship with Big Sean, even if she did play coy about it.

Anita Sarkeesian driven out of home by online abuse and death threats

Since the launch of Feminist Frequency's Tropes vs Women in Games, creator Anita Sarkeesian has faced a wall of abuse and threats from enraged critics of her detailed research that highlights misogyny in game fiction.
This week, the abusers drove her out of her own home.
"Some very scary threats have just been made against me and my family. Contacting authorities now," she wrote on Twitter last night.
She later tweeted, "I'm safe. Authorities have been notified. Staying with friends tonight. I'm not giving up. But this harassment of women in tech must stop!"
Earlier today, Sarkeesian shared a particularly disturbing series of threats from one abuser, along with a trigger warning. "I usually don't share the really scary stuff. But it's important for folks to know how bad it gets."
Earlier this week, Feminist Frequency published a new episode of Tropes vs Women in Games looking at the Women as Background Decoration trope, which Sarkeesian described as "largely insignificant non-playable female characters whose sexuality or victimhood is exploited as a way to infuse edgy, gritty or racy flavoring into game worlds. These sexually objectified female bodies are designed to function as environmental texture while titillating presumed straight male players." The episode has been widely praised and shared.

Miley Cyrus and Jesse Helt Raised $200,000 For My Friends Place One Day After VMAs!

Miley Cyrus didn’t even have to twerk to make a bang at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

When the "Wrecking Ball" singer won Video of the Year at the show on Sunday, she sent up Jesse Helt, a young homeless man, to accept the award in her place. The pair used the opportunity to raise awareness for youth homelessness and for Cyrus’ fundraising campaign for My Friend’s Place, a Los Angeles organization that supports young people living on the streets.

By Monday, the campaign had raised $200,000, according to The New York Times.

"I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now," Helt said in his speech on Sunday. "I know this because I am one of these people."

He also directed viewers to Cyrus’ Facebook page where she explained in a pre-recorded video how people can get involved, and that donors will be entered to win a trip for two to Rio de Janeiro to go to her Sept. 28 show and "hang out" with the pop star.

Juicy Details About The Avengers: Age Of Ultron Team Roster

Potential Avengers: Age of Ultron spoilers below. Proceed with caution.

Marvel Studios Kevin Feige might be vague, but he very rarely lies. He told us Thanos would be in Guardians of the Galaxy years before it happened. He proclaimed that Captain America: The Winter Soldier would change the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it did. There are plenty of other teases that have yet to pay off, but which we believe will do so. One in particular concerns the Avengers.

Feige has long said what he loves about the team is that the core members could be changed along the way. Just because Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow are the team at the end of The Avengers and beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, that doesn’t mean they’ll always be the only team members.

Robert Downey Jr. Puts His Ego Aside, Admits Guardians Of The Galaxy Is The Best Marvel Movie

Going back to 2008, Robert Downey Jr. has been the face of the Marvel Studios franchise. It was his performance as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's Iron Man that lit the powder keg that wound up becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he has been a key player and figure ever since. As important as both Downey Jr. and Iron Man have been to the success of Marvel, however, the actor will now admit that it's actually not one of his movies that represents the best that the company can produce. Instead, that distinction belongs to the sci-fi opera that landed in theaters earlier this month: James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Downey Jr. recently arrived in Toronto, Canada in advance of the Toronto International Film Festival - where his new movie, The Judge, will debut - and while speaking with the Toronto Sun the star revealed that he now thinks that Guardians of the Galaxy represents what is really great about the work being done at Marvel. Said the actor,
"[Guardians of the] Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever - and it’s odd for someone with, on occasion, an ego the size of mine to actually say that!"

Billion-Dollar Boss Ass Bitch Britney Spears

Unlike singer-songwriters, contemporary pop stars rarely have their songs viewed through an autobiographical prism, yet it’s hard to miss the changes in Britney Spears’ core messaging over the past years. Early in her career, when she was a teenage star selling albums in the eight-digits, “Oops! … I Did It Again” seemed to sum up her effortless rise. Later, as she became an ever-reliable hitmaker and touring workhorse, “I’m a Slave 4 U” took on extra-textual meanings.

And during her mid-2000s run as the tabloid successor to Michael Jackson, “Chaotic” and “Blackout” served as the operative terms. In that sense, the 2013 track she uses to open every night of her trendsetting Las Vegas residency says volumes about her current career motto — its repeated refrain echoing through Planet Hollywood’s Axis Theater:

“Now get to work, bitch.”

Apple iPhone 6 event officially set for Sept. 9?

Apple on Thursday sent out invites for a press event on Sept. 9 in its hometown of Cupertino, Calif.

The company provided few hints about what will be announced beyond saying "Wish we could say more." That could indicate something related to Siri, Apple's digital voice assistant. Generally, Apple is expected to introduce its newest iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 6.

The event will come a year after Apple introduced the iPhone 5S and 5C and a week after arch rival Samsung is set to unveil its Galaxy Note 4 phone-tablet hybrid, or phablet. Apple has added a new iPhone every year since former CEO Steve Jobs introduced the smartphone line in 2007, and new iPhones have been unveiled in the fall since 2011.

Many market watchers expect Apple to introduce two new iPhone 6 models with display sizes of 4.7 and 5.5 inches, though some recent reports speculate one device could be released at a later date. Analysts expect the iPhone 6 to be one of the largest product launches in Apple's history -- both in terms of device screen size and total sales. The company reportedly has asked manufacturing partners to produce about 30 percent to 40 percent more iPhones by the end of this year than it ordered for its initial run of last year's iPhone 5S and 5C.

For Apple, having a successful iPhone 6 launch is vital. Apple hosts only one phone event a year, and it generates more than half its revenue from its smartphone line. The iPhone serves as the lynchpin to Apple's overall growth, particularly as the market awaits the widely speculated iWatch and as the iPad struggles against lower-cost rivals and larger phones.

Apple also could show off a wearable at the event.

NFL Implements New Severe Penalties for Domestic Violence

The NFL is immediately implementing a sweeping domestic violence initiative that calls for a six-game suspension for a first offense and a lifetime ban from the league for a second offense.

The measures, announced in a letter from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to all team owners, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, are due in part to widespread criticism Goodell received for his handling of discipline for Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. The two-game suspension for Rice left many with the impression that the NFL did not understand domestic violence or take it seriously as a crime. Goodell acknowledged as much in the letter.

"At times, however, and despite our best efforts, we fall short of our goals," Goodell wrote. "We clearly did so in response to a recent incident of domestic violence. ... My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families. I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values.

Nina Simone’s Best Hair Music Moments

By Afrobella

When Nina Simone first came on the scene in the late 1950’s, she wore her hair straight and neat and sang covers of popular jazz standards in addition to her own songs. In those early days, her songs were cool, cute and of obvious quality – but the fiery spirit that became her trademark wasn’t yet fully apparent. When the Civil Rights Movement began, Nina Simone found her voice and in doing so, gave us ours. Her songs spoke about the struggle, the pain and the beauty of blackness. She sang about the need for self-love and appreciation, despite the messages society was then sending to people of color. She wore her hair in beautiful, striking Afrocentric styles and represented our beauty just by her appearance.

When it comes to choosing favorites, there are too many of Nina Simone’s songs to name. But when it comes to finding glorious inspiration for natural hair, these are the songs that come to mind. Here are the Nina Simone songs that inspired me to love myself holistically – from my wooly hair to my brown skin.

Sam Lutfi posts vague tweet admit Britney Spears & David Lucado break-up

With TMZ breaking the news that Britney Spears and David Lucado split after a video surfaced of him allegedly cheating, I knew it wouldn’t be long until Sam Lutfi chimed in on the matter, and that’s exactly what he did.

“17 years not long enough for you fools??” Lutfi tweeted, suggesting (albeit vaguely) that Spears’ family had something to do with the recent break-up.

Of course Sam doesn’t name names in his tweets, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what he’s referring to.

Poor Sam. If he didn’t have the Spears’ to talk about, he’d be irrelevent. Not that he isn’t already.

Jessica Alba left Church to fight against homophobia

In a recent Daily Beast interview, actress Jessica Alba goes on to share about how her born-again Christian friends "didn't approve" of a role she accepted in TV show Chicago Hope playing a teen with an STD. And while she was in a born-again Christian youth group at the time, she describes her church experience as "very twisted".

She then goes on to describe how she was bowled over by a bisexual man and couldn't reconcile the church's attitude to sexuality with how "amazing" a person he was.

"I fell in love when I was 16 and had this major crush on... I guess he was a drag queen? He was bisexual and a ballerina, and this was while I was at the Atlantic Theater Company in Vermont," she recalls. "We used to go to this gay club and I'd dance with him all night, four nights a week. I was so in love with him and thought, 'There's no way this guy's going to hell,' because in my church, it was, 'Anybody who's gay is going to hell' and 'Premarital sex is evil,' and I thought, 'There's no chance! This guy is amazing!' So that went right out the window."

Glenn Beck's The Blaze Talks to Time Warner About Replacing HLN

In an ongoing effort to revamp HLN, Time Warner's CNN has been talking to Glenn Beck‘s The Blaze as a possible partner, an individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap.

The Blaze is a conservative 24-hour news and entertainment network funded by subscriptions and founded by Beck, a right-wing talk show host who built a huge following on Fox.

An insider told TheWrap that The Blaze gave Time Warner two proposals, but neither went anywhere. Another individual with knowledge of the talks said the possibility of a joint venture is not dead — they're just not active. Under the proposed partnership, Beck's Blaze would take over HLN's spot on the proverbial TV dial.

The Blaze is available on 70 television providers nationwide. In the first half of 2014, the distributor base for The Blaze has grown by 50 percent., which features written content, receives more than 25 million unique visitors per month.

Andrew Garfield Gets The House Back In First Clip From Ramin Bahrani's '99 Homes'

Here's the official synopsis:

Around the world, everyone knows that honest hard work gets you nowhere. In sunny Orlando, Florida, construction worker Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield) is evicted from his home by a charismatic, gun-toting real-estate broker Mike Carver (Michael Shannon), and is forced to move his mom (Laura Dern) and young son into a shabby motel. Then, an unexpected opportunity arises and Nash strikes a deal with the devil - he begins working for Carver in a desperate attempt to get his home back. Carver seduces Nash into a risky world of stealing from banks and the government. Nash makes big money; but there's a cost. On Carver's orders, Nash must evict honest families from their homes – just as it happened to him. With his conscience tearing him apart and an incredibly lucrative 1,000 home deal on the line, Nash will have to choose between destroying an honest man for the ultimate win or going against Carver and finding redemption

Here's the director's statement:

The 99% is a global phenomenon. The common man around the world can no longer do hard honest work and expect to thrive against systematic greed and corruption. When faced by the firing squad, does a man join hands with his executioner? Is there any choice to make other than a deal with the devil?

Telluride and Toronto Lineups: A Critical Crystal Ball

By virtue of its rapturous reception at its world premiere on opening night of the Venice Film Festival, it appears that the "the season" already has a pace-setter by the name of Birdman. In terms of explosive cinematic style and viewer exhilaration, Alejandro G. Inarritu's breathlessly stylish look at a once-famous actor trying to make a comeback would be hard to beat in any year, which is not to say that many films won't give it a shot. And several of them will be unveiled over the next two weeks, first over Labor Day weekend at the Telluride Film Festival, where both 12 Years A Slave and Gravity first turned heads a year ago, and then at the cinematic blow-out in Toronto, where an announced total of 143 films will have their world premieres.

With so many world premieres on offer this year, Toronto now looks quite peevish indeed having declared a vendetta against Telluride for presuming to snare a handful of world bows for itself; does Toronto really feel it has to have absolutely everything first to retain its position? In any event, Toronto, having abandoned its policy of always opening with a Canadian film, will launch with the world premiere of David Dobkin's family legal drama The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, which can only be an improvement over last year's ill-advised opener, The Fifth Estate.
