Cardinal Capaldi: "[Doctor Who] is part of my DNA."

Peter Capaldi is a massive fan of Doctor Who.

The Oscar winner's passion for our weird, wonderful little sci-fi show is obvious the moment when, on set in Cardiff, he starts to speak about the upcoming series eight. His love of the BBC drama as a younger man is a trivia nugget that the media has seized upon ever since he was first unveiled as the new Doctor in August 2013.

"It was weird but wonderful. It wasn't what I signed up for!"

Thanks Malcolm Tucker, for the new Doctor

It’s not as rare as, say, a total solar eclipse or the alignment of the planets, but the arrival of a new star on “Doctor Who” is still a significant galactic event, at least to fans of that long-running BBC science-fiction series. Last summer, Matt Smith announced that that he was leaving the lead role of the enigmatic time-and-space adventurer known as the Doctor, and the BBC said that he would be succeeded by Peter Capaldi, the Scottish actor best known to British audiences (and some Americans as well) as Malcolm Tucker, the explosively vulgar government official on the political satire “The Thick of It” and the film “In the Loop.”

Katie Holmes shares memories from her childhood + comments on Robin Williams' death

Katie Holmes leaves CBS Studios after giving an interview for her movie The Giver in New York City. “Well, I grew up in the Midwest, and I have such fond memories of every single Christmas. So, what really hit me in [The Giver] was seeing Jonas go sledding, because I remember that so distinctly in my childhood; that sense of freedom, wonder, and awe. [Laughs] It usually meant a snow day and just so much fun,” Katie shared to Refinery29.

She recently commented on the tragic death of Robin Williams to E! News: “It’s so awful, so awful. It’s just shocking. I’m just so sorry for his family and friends. He made us all ride so high. He brought such laughter and joy to us for so many years.”

'True Blood' actor Jim Parrack likes to drink blood in real life

This "True Blood" actor is bloodthirsty. Literally.

Jim Parrack, who plays human Hoyt Fortenberry on the HBO show, told Vulture that he enjoys a little real-life blood-sucking every once in a while.

"I was being literal. I like the real deal," Parrack told Vulture. Why? "Um, I guess for the same reason some people want alcohol? Or for the same reason some people want, I don't know...milk? Or Kool-Aid?"

Parrack said he doesn't drink blood regularly like the vampires on "True Blood," but indulges in his strange habit just "a couple times a year."

"It's more like on an impulse," the actor explained. "When you make me spell it out like this, it sounds strange...I guess the best way to put it is sometimes I just like the way it tastes."

The 33-year-old doesn't like just anyone's blood and seeing blood at the butcher doesn't interest him either. Instead, he prefers the blood of his beloved, which currently his fiancée "Hunger Games" actress Leven Rambin.

"I'm absolutely particular," he said. "It does something to you emotionally. It's hard to describe."

ONTD, do you ever like the taste of blood?

First Look at Paul Rudd as Scott Lang in 'Ant-Man'

Paul Rudd is going on a superhero's journey in the new Marvel Studios movie Ant-Man, although these days he's looking decidedly unheroic.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man (in theaters July 17, 2015) began production in San Francisco Monday, but by the looks of the first image from the movie, with Rudd's hoodie-clad, unshaven Scott Lang skulking around the Golden Gate Bridge next to a decrepit van, he has a ways to go before he's on the level of the Avengers.

Time: Taylor Swift is basic, cliché, conformist and predictable without any sense of irony

“Shake It Off” was pulled out of the empowerment part of that cycle: this time the tune shakes off all the haters’ insults. But the song also attempts to make her even more mainstream. She’s not even a little bit country: she’s the dictionary definition of pop star. What can we expect from a new T-Swift album? Think the sonic version of drinking a pumpkin spice latte in Uggs while watching Sex and the City.

We saw this coming two years ago with “22.” In fact, loving Taylor Swift and the song “22” is a large portion of BuzzFeed’s “How Basic Are You?” quiz, as is Diet Coke—for which Swift is the spokesperson! (For the uninitiated, someone who is basic is cliché, conformist and predictable without any sense of irony. Here’s a great explainer.) But Red tenuously held on to some folksy roots. That and her adorable awkwardness kept her from being Katy Perry.

Not Every Black Celebrity Has to Take a Stand on Ferguson

Demanding that every black celebrity with a hit single or Twitter following say something about Ferguson implies that Michael Brown's murder is a minority issue—not a human rights one.

There are many people who have yet to be held adequately responsible in Ferguson, Missouri. America is starving for information from the higher-ups that allowed and condoned police brutality in Ferguson, and simultaneously calling for Michael Brown’s killer to be tried and punished accordingly. But amid this cry for justice and accountability is a stranger, less logical expectation of vocal activism and admonishment from the most visible members of the hip-hop community.

This misguided notion that hip-hop heavyweights aren’t doing enough was particularly apparent in the mass disappointment leveled at St. Louis rapper Nelly in the wake of the incident. Now, Nelly is not famous for his political activism or preoccupation with African-American issues. Nelly is “famous” for songs like “Hot in Herre” and “Air Force Ones.” While Nelly has made his name promoting Apple Bottom Jeans, not social justice, the fact of his blackness combined with his former zip code was apparently enough to make Nelly’s absence from Ferguson social media activism both apparent and abhorrent.

'The Knick' News: Cliff Martinez talks his fabulous electronic score + cast stuff

How “The Knick” Became The Most Hypnotic Show On Television

One of the things that makes The Knick feel so alive — and remarkably different from previous period pieces — is its very modern score. (You can get a sense of it in the first few minutes of the first episode, which is free to stream here).

Cliff Martinez has worked with The Knick’s showrunner, Steven Soderbergh, on eight films, including sex, lies, videotape and Contagion. He was also a drummer for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, created the distinctive score for Drive, and collaborated with Skrillex for the indelible sound of Spring Breakers. He is, in short, incredibly talented — which is why I was so excited to talk with him about his work on The Knick, and the creation of a soundtrack to which I can’t stop listening. That’s what I mean when I say it’s “hypnotic”: There’s a pulse to this music that I can’t wrest myself away from. It has that effect on its own — perhaps more so — but it also has the effect on the show itself: It inscribes its rhythms on the narrative, to the point that I can’t think of the plot without also thinking of the way that the score shapes it.

Game Journalists Exchange Positive Press for Sex - Is Anyone Surprised?

Zoe Quinn is an indie game developer responsible for the recently published Depression Quest (which I said some nice things about here). It turns out that Zoe has become somewhat infamous online, often accused of playing the victim to gain publicity. Speculation turned to accusation yesterday, when Zoe’s ex-boyfriend make a post on his own blog, accusing her (with proof) of cheating with a number of prominent industry figures. Among them was current Kotaku writer Nathan Grayson, apparently solicitating sexual favours for positive press.

Craig Ferguson to host new early evening talk show

There’s more news from the late-night shuffle, and this time  it should be comforting to fans of quirky “Late Late Show” host Craig Ferguson.

Ferguson is close to reaching a deal for a new, half-hour, 7 p.m. syndicated talk show that will begin airing next fall. Tribune Media Services will distribute the show. Ferguson is expected to bring his “Late Late Show” executive producer Michael Naidus and robot skeleton puppet Geoff with him, according to the Associated Press.

Ferguson will also begin hosting “Celebrity Name Game,” another syndicated show that starts next month. The Hollywood Reporter offered a description: “The game show is based on the board game Identity Crisis. Celebrities are teamed with contestants to identify famous names (actors, singers, athletes, pop culture figures, politicians, cartoon characters, etc.).”

We first learned that Ferguson, 52, would be leaving his current gig at CBS shortly after it was announced that Stephen Colbert would be taking over David Letterman’s “Late Show” hosting duties next year. James Corden is the suspected frontrunner to replace Ferguson on the “Late Late Show.”

Michael Myers Returns In ‘Halloween: The Next Chapter’

The Michael Myers legacy will continue on when Dimension Films, along with producer Malek S. Akkad, gear up for the latest entry in the Halloween franchise.

Back in May we exclusively reported that the next film was happening, and it was confirmed by the official website. Now, there’s a bit more clarity as Schmoeville reports that the title – as of this writing – is Halloween: The Next Chapter.
They say the film is a fresh new take on the Halloween legacy that will be a companion to the Zombie movies, which may or may not confirm Scout Taylor-Compton’s premature casting announcement. New writers are attached and expected to turn in draft this fall. This is when (presumably) the Weinstein Company will once again change their mind and go in yet another direction.

John Carpenter’s 1978 classic followed a psychotic murderer institutionalized since childhood for the murder of his sister, who escapes and stalks a bookish teenage girl and her friends while his doctor chases him through the streets.

Zombie told a similar tale, while mixing in plenty of Zombie-isms. The sequel went in a more personal and brutal direction. It should be interesting to see what this Next Chapter is, but I like the homage to Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter…

What's your favorite scary movie? Any funny scary movie stories?

Katy Perry, Rihanna & Coldplay on Super Bowl Halftime Shortlist

The National Football League doesn't usually pay the act that performs at halftime during the Super Bowl. But in a twist this year, the league has asked artists under consideration for the high-profile gig to pay to play, according to people familiar with the matter.

The NFL has narrowed down the list of potential performers for the 2015 Super Bowl to three candidates: Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay, these people said. While notifying the artists' camps of their candidacy, league representatives also asked at least some of the acts if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.

The pay-to-play suggestion got a chilly reception from the candidates' representatives, these people said.

NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter said the league's contracts with performers were confidential and that its only goal was "to put on the best possible show."

As for the lineup, she said, "when we have something to announce, we'll announce it." Super Bowl XLIX is to be played outside Phoenix on Feb. 1.

It's unclear how much money the NFL was seeking, and whether it would likely have amounted to more or less than the extra income the chosen performer might stand to generate from the exposure. No decision has been made yet and it is possible another act could be selected.

Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Michael Angarano to Star in ‘Stanford Prison Experiment’

Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“C.O.G.”) will direct the movie for financiers Sandbar Pictures and Abandon Features

After more than a decade in development, a movie about the infamous “Stanford Prison Experiment” is finally moving forward with Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller and Michael Angarano set to star and “C.O.G.” filmmaker Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“C.O.G.”) directing, TheWrap has learned.

Sandbar Pictures and Abandon Features are financing the indie project, which Brent Emery and Lizzie Friedman are producing with Greg Little, Lauren Bratman and “The Hurt Locker” star Brian Geraghty.

The film is based on the landmark experiment conducted at Stanford University in the summer of 1971, in which randomly-chosen 19 and 20-year-old students were divided into camps of either prison guards or prisoners. The experiment was meant to last two weeks, but it was cut short due to the level of cruelty and sadism that erupted among the participants.

Benedict Cumberbatch cast as the voice of Shere Khan in Andy Serkis' Jungle Book

Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the voice of Shere Khan in a live-action adaptation of Jungle Book made by Warner Bros that will compete against another live-action version made by Disney.

The Warner Bros version, Jungle Book: Origins, will be the directorial debut of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit actor Andy Serkis, with Sherlock star Cumberbatch set to lend his imperious tones to the infamous man-eating tiger, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The voice of Shere Khan in the Disney film will be performed by Luther star Idris Elba, under director Jon Favreu. The Disney version – announced earlier this year – is fully cast whereas Cumberbatch is the first name to be announced for Serkis' take on Rudyard Kipling’s story.

To have two similar films in production from two different studios is nothing new, of course. In 1991, there was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Robin Hood; in 1998, there was Antz and A Bug's Life, and in 2012, there were two takes on the Snow White fairy tale, Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsmen. There are many reasons for it, mostly to do with a topical story or a screenplay being sent around to many studios.

Disney’s Jungle Book will be out October 2015, while the Warner Bros version slated for October 2016.

Arrow: Matt Ward cast as Simon Lacroix aka Komodo

Arrow is loading up on its villains for season three. Matt Ward (TRON: Legacy and Hellcats) has been tapped to play Simon Lacroix, otherwise known as DC Comics villain Komodo, EW has learned exclusively.

In DC Comics’ New 52, Simon is an archer and adversary of Green Arrow. On Arrow, he’s a deadly mercenary using the code name Komodo, who wreaks havoc in Starling City.
Komodo’s introduction comes as the show makes a move to connect the villains-of-the-week more closely to the overarching story.

“Yes, he’s the villain-of-the-week for the second week of the show, but you’ll see that Team Arrow’s pursuit of him is part and parcel of a season-long storyline,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says. “You’re going to know what happens to Komodo at the end of the episode, but it will be a little bit tied in better with the season-long mythology than villain-of-the-week episodes have done in the past.”

I don't know the character OR the actor and he seems to be mostly a 'villain of the week' kind of character. I just need S3 to start already.

Chris Kluwe, Vikings settle out of court

Calling his settlement with the Minnesota Vikings an opportunity "to do a lot of good for a lot of people," Chris Kluwe announced his fight with the team is over.

The Vikings and Kluwe's attorney Clayton Halunen announced Tuesday morning that they had reached a settlement to resolve the former punter's allegations of homophobic behavior by the team. It put the issue to rest 7½ months after Kluwe first published his allegations and avoids the prospect of a lengthy legal battle.

The Vikings had initially announced a $100,000 contribution to charities that support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender causes, and they will make additional contributions to five LGBT-friendly charities over the next five years. The team will also enhance sensitivity training that is already required throughout the organization.

The parties did not announce the financial terms of the settlement, but Kluwe said he will not receive any money.

"Everyone knows the numbers we've been talking about. It's a substantial commitment to LGBT causes," said Halunen, who had initially asked for a $1 million charitable donation.

Celebrities opening checkbooks for Democratic candidates in midterm elections

Hollywood is pouring money into the midterm elections. A-listers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Barbra Streisand are coughing up blockbuster bucks, according to Federal Election Commission data collected and analyzed by The Hill.

The donations are largely aimed at keeping the Senate in Democratic hands. Republicans, who have the political winds at their backs, need to pick up six seats to win control of the upper chamber.

J.J. Abrams, Jack Black, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Garner, Steven Spielberg, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Jerry Seinfeld, Mike Myers, Jon Hamm, America Ferrera, Aaron Sorkin, Ben Stiller, Diane Lane, Rainn Wilson, Lily Tomlin, Ron Howard, Tommy Hilfiger, Eva Longoria and Chris Rock are among the celebrities to donate money to Democratic candidates.

"In general, midterm elections do not bring a lot of celebrity donations,” Steven J. Ross, a history professor at the University of Southern California said. The author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated, “Hollywood Left and Right: How Movie Stars Shaped American Politics,” says midterm elections are considered “less glamorous” to stars. “I think if they give, they want to give in a celebrity context, which means the presidential election."

All this partisan giving could come at a price for celebrities who crave mass appeal at the box office. But veteran Hollywood publicist and author Michael Levine says unless one of his clients is donating to someone “tremendously controversial,” he wouldn’t necessarily advise against it. I think it’s completely dependent on their long term agenda. If their long-term agenda is to be a political, cultural force in America, then making donations is fine. If having access to politicians and leaders is important to them, then I think it’s fine.”
