Box office preview: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' aims for a cosmic debut

The motley crew of rebels and mercenaries in Guardians of the Galaxy make their theatrical debut this weekend, and all signs point to a stellar opening. They might not be the most popular or well-known Marvel characters, but strong reviews and an even stronger marketing campaign have helped to drum up interest for these unlikely superheroes, which include an earthling (Chris Pratt), a talking raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and a tree (Vin Diesel). As the widest August release in history with a 4,080 screen launch, Guardians is tracking at $65 million, but many analysts think that it has the potential to earn much more.

The James Brown biopic Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman as the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, opens in 2,466 theaters this weekend, providing some much-needed alternative programming in this summer of superheroes and sequels.

Here’s how things might play out.

Kit Harington knows nothing (about WWI) in 'Testament of Youth's trailer

Even when he's not playing Jon Snow, Kit Harington is blindly pledging his life to the greater good and engaging in a futile conflict.

Lionsgate just released the trailer for Testament of Youth, a World War I-set romantic drama based on the memoir of the same name by Vera Brittain (Alicia Vikander). Her account follows the lives of the “Lost Generation,” specifically those of her brother and her fiancé Roland Leighton (Kit Harington), both of whom enlisted.

Brittain was also a pioneering journalist in an age when few women could pursue the career, as well as one of the few women to attend Oxford in that era. Vikander, a Swedish actress, has made a name for herself in similar costume dramas (from Anna Karenina to A Royal Affair). Also, this is a prime chance to appreciate a clean-shaven Jon Snow.

ONTD Original: ASTROLOGY POST! The "why did you write about this irrelevant has-been?" Edition!

For years now, we’ve wondered: Why does Lindsay keep getting chances? Why does she keep fucking them up? Where did all her potential go wrong? The conclusion seems to be that she is her own worst enemy, but somehow, she manages to bounce back in one way or another. We’ve discussed it from a societal point of view (“as long as we give her attention, she’ll keep selling”), a psychological point of view (“she clearly has mental issues and needs help”), we’ve tried the scapegoat point of view (“her parents are total train wrecks, no wonder she is so fucked up”), and even Oprah’s point of view (“time to cut the bullshit”)… but now, it’s time to talk about it from the astrological point of view.

Becky G isn't your average teen. The 17-year-old estrella is blowin' up the radio with her catchy summer anthem, 'Shower', gearing up for a tour with fellow CoverGirl spokeswoman Katy Perry, and preparing for a performance at Thursday night's Premios Juventud.

We sat down to chat with Becky G about her (busy!) summer, her go-to beauty tips, and her new album. Plus, we got the scoop on her celebrity crush! Check it out:

So you're performing at the Premios Juventud tonight! Are you excited?

I am so excited! It's my second year -- this is like high school! It's my sophomore year; I'm not a freshman anymore. I'm not a newbie. And, I'm performing "Shower" in English and in Spanish, so it'll be something new!

Is there anyone you're excited to see perform?

I'm really excited to see Pit (Pitbull) perform. Austin Mahone, of course. And, I'm really excited to see Chiquis Rivera perform.

Can you give us a sneak peek about what you'll be wearing?

Well, last year, I had a lot of fun and wanted to do something different. I did something a lot more covered up, but still very youthful with the color and the pattern. It was like a two-piece suit type of thing.

Kate Upton: "It Was Inconvenient To Be Pretty When I Was Growing Up"

Though plenty of women would kill for Kate Upton's good looks, it turns out the 22-year-old supermodel found her beauty growing up "kind of inconvenient."

Kate covers Elle U.K.'s September issue showing off Fall fashion in a turtleneck and a coat, and recalls growing up in a farm in Florida where her beauty didn't exactly get her ahead.

"Living on a farm, beauty doesn't get you anywhere. Because I was pretty didn't mean I could convince my sister to do my chores," she explains to the magazine. "It was kind of inconvenient to be pretty, growing up."

Nevertheless, Kate was happy when her curves came in.

"When I first started modelling, I was a normal catalog model. Then, I became a woman, and I was really excited about becoming a woman. Because I'm from Florida, it's all about being in bathing suits," she says. "It's a different view of beauty there. You are ugly if you don't have a curvy body. And I didn't have one, and then I got one, and thought, 'Yessss!'"

Though not everyone in the modeling world agreed.

"And then people say: 'Oh, wow, you're healthy.' And you're like, 'Wait -- what? I've been begging for this body my whole life!'" she recalls.

"Agents have put me under pressure to lose weight in the past. I would go on set and clients loved me. And then I would go into an agency and feel like crap about myself. They would say: 'Just lose five more [pounds]!' But I couldn't give a crap. I still don't."

... Clearly, that strategy has paid off.

Elle U.K. magazine's September 2014 issue hits newsstands Aug. 1.

Kim Zolciak lost $250K gambling, still spent $1,240 on scratch-offs

Kim Zolciak is addicted to wigs, Louis Vuitton and now, gambling.

The reality TV star, 36, spent a whopping $1,240 on scratch off tickets on the way to Destin, Florida for a family vacation.

The gas-station shopping spree was captured for her Bravo show, “Don’t Be Tardy…”

“I love to gamble, but there is no casino here in Georgia, so the only way to get my thrill is to buy scratch offs,” said the slim mother of six before revealing she once took a huge hit in the Bahamas losing $250,000.

Her oldest daughters are well aware of their mom’s addiction. “You cannot stop her, she gets into the zone,” said Brielle. “Especially with her online gambling.”

In a short post on the show’s official website, Kroy Biermann’s wife said gambling is her love.

“In Georgia, there is not a casino, so the closet thing to a slot machine is a scratch ticket! Every time we head to Destin, Kroy and I stop at the same gas station and get our scratch tickets. I am not sure how much I won this time but I think I broke even. It’s all in good fun, and I do it responsibly.

After purchasing $1,240 in scratch tickets, Zolciak won $36.

Wherever the musical "Hair" is performed, the casting requirements are the same: young, good looking, capable of carrying a rock tune. Looking great in various states of undress also helps..

The lead performers in the Hollywood Bowl's production of the "American tribal love-rock musical" that runs Friday through Sunday easily fit the bill — at least as far as the first three traits are concerned.

Playing flower children in search of free love and unfettered mind expansion, Kristen Bell, Hunter Parrish and Benjamin Walker were in the thick of rehearsals when they sat down to talk about their roles in the production.

‘The Killing,’ TV review

The final season of “The Killing” has the dark cop drama playing its strongest card well.
The six episodes that drop Friday on Netflix include a solid murder case, but focus more on the show’s deeply troubled detective team of Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman).

At the end of season three they became good cops who did a bad thing, and the final season uses the consequences of that act to explore the larger question of where their lives can go from here.
By all indications, their scenarios are no sunnier than the bleak Seattle skies under which they still work.
Yet we viewers have built up a real affection for Linden and Holder, partly because they have made their lives so hard for themselves. We want them to find at least a measure of peace.
The most enduring legacy of “The Killing” may be that the producers of every “closed-end” TV series now must swear in blood they really will wrap up their story in X number of episodes.
That’s because some fans and critics went nuts when “The Killing” did not do so after season 1.
The show’s real value, though, runs deeper. It has woven well-crafted murder dramas and, beyond that, given us wonderfully complex lead characters who go way beyond the light banter, gruff exterior and “will they/won’t they” tease of most TV cop teams. Even the best ones.
In a perfect world, Enos and Kinnaman next year would become the latest Netflix stars to score Emmy nominations.
Probably won’t happen. But their work, including this final season, stands strong.

Two New Posters for David Fincher's 'Gone Girl' Released

Collapse )
As summer draws to an end, our thoughts begin to drift towards the dramatic fare of Fall and Winter. Near the top of that list has to be David Fincher‘s Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. The film is scheduled to open October 3 after a world premiere at the New York Film Festival. We’re currently two trailers into the marketing. Now, two new posters have been released. Each have a trademark, lush Fincher look as the eyes of Amazing Amy (Pike) look down on her husband Nick (Affleck).

The posters are pretty self explanatory. The image is not. That’s Affleck’s character with two detectives (Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) and, I believe, Amy’s parents. In the book there’s an intriguing dynamic between those characters as the parents react to the man they know loves their daughter, but may or may not have kidnapped and killed her. Author Gillian Flynn gets great drama out of that complex relationship.
Co-starring Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Emily Ratajkowski, Casey Wilson, Boyd Holbrook and Scoot McNairy. It opens October 3. Here’s the official plot description:
GONE GIRL – directed by David Fincher and based upon the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn – unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

s o u r c e

Just finished reading the book this week and enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to this. There's also an early draft of the screenplay floating around that shows how the diary entries will be incorporated into the movie.

Univision ranked No. 1 network among key demo in July sweeps

For the second year in a row, Spanish-language television network Univision nabbed the No. 1 spot in prime time among 18-to-49-year-old viewers during the July sweeps.

Univision Communications said its flagship Univision network outpaced its English-language competitors during the prime-time hours among the demographic group most important to advertisers.

Univision Chief Executive Randy Falco said maintaining the No. 1 position for two consecutive July sweeps "validates our strong position in the industry amidst increased competition."

The company also said its station in Los Angeles ranked as No. 1 most watched station in the country during prime time and throughout the day among the key demographic. Its New York station ranked second.

In years past, the major broadcast networks largely hung a "Gone Fishing" sign during the summer months, content to run repeat episodes of their scripted dramas and comedies. But last year, CBS found great success running scripted originals during the summer with "Under the Dome," and this year added more originals.

Still, Univision proved to be more popular with viewers under the age of 50. source

Vine video star Tish Simmonds on the positives and perils of social media stardom

Tish, of Skelmanthorpe, says she has no idea why her videos are so popular.

She's gone from studying animal care at Kirklees College to being stopped in the street to pose for selfies with adoring fans - and all because of a six second video clip.

Latitia Simmonds, 18 - known as Tish - uploaded the clip of her in her mum's car to Vine, a mobile app which takes six second videos - and became an internet sensation overnight.

A week later Tish, of Skelmanthorpe, says she has no idea why her videos are so popular, but she's hoping her 15 minutes in the spotlight will help her on the path to a new career.

The former Shelley College pupil said: "I found Vine and thought I would have a go. I was just sitting in the car thinking, "what shall I do? I'll do 'broom broom'.

"I just make it up as I go along and then I tell my mum what to say."

She put the Vine on Twitter - and in a matter of days the video was seen by millions of people.

Iggy Azalea Means Big Business for Brands

Two of summer’s biggest hits could lead to a $5 million year as branding deals and a revived House of Style rev up the female rapper.

Iggy Azalea has been dominating the summer, holding down the top two slots of Billboard’s Summer Songs chart for an uninterrupted nine weeks with “Fancy” and a guest spot on Ariana Grande’s “Problem.” A third single (“Black Widow,” featuring Rita Ora) and an appearance on mentor T.I.’s comeback single, “No Mediocre,” also are scaling the charts. But can she translate early radio ubiquity into a sustainable career? After all, for every summer breakout like Bruno Mars or Katy Perry, there’s a Carly Rae Jepsen or Gotye that can’t quite make that next leap.

Meghan Trainor On 'All About That Bass': It's About 'Loving Your Body … And Your Booty' (Q&A)

Meghan Trainor's debut hit "All About That Bass" is more than a pop song with an infectious beat. Its message of self-acceptance is also helping it soar. "I'm here to tell you that every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top!," Trainor sings in "Bass," which mixes its moral with a satisfyingly complex tropical and retro-R&B/Motown blend.

The recipe is clearly working: "Bass" ranks at No. 54 on the Aug. 2 Billboard Hot 100, up from its No. 84 debut the week before, fueled by a 63 percent rise to 64,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It also enters the Aug. 9 Pop Songs airplay chart at No. 37.

Further proof of (and an extra catalyst for) its popularity: "Obsessed with Meghan Trainor's 'all about that bass'!!!!," Colbie Caillat Tweeted on July 19. "(That booty booty, that booty booty) ;)"

Pacers' Paul George suffers gruesome injury

LAS VEGAS -- Indiana Pacers star Paul George suffered an apparent severe lower right leg injury Friday night during the Team USA intrasquad showcase game at UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center.

George's leg landed and then buckled at the base of the basket stanchion after he fouled James Harden on a drive to the basket just 27 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Teammates nearby immediately reacted with Harden doubling over as George recoiled on the baseline. Medics, U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski and members of George's family who were at the game rushed to his side.

His right leg was put in an air cast and he was taken to a local hospital after being treated for about 15 minutes on the court.

After he left in an ambulance, the rest of the game -- which pitted players in camp for the U.S. as it looks to trim its roster ahead of the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain that begins Aug. 30 -- was canceled.

The top 10 also included Michael Jackson's Earth Song and Champagne Supernova by Oasis.

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers previously revealed the lyric in Human was based on a quote from the author Hunter S. Thompson, "we're raising a generation of dancers".

"I took it and ran," Brandon said. "I guess it bothers people that it's not grammatically correct, but I think I'm allowed to do whatever I want."

Jessica Chastain Featured in New Trailer for SALOME/WILD SALOME

A new trailer has arrived for 'Salomé'/'Wild Salomé', a documentary about making of the movie, "Wild Salomé," first screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2011, but now part of a double feature heading to UK theaters. Get a first look below!

Salomé: the Oscar Wilde play is set in the time of Jesus and is the story of Salomé (Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain appearing in her first movie role), a princess whose stepfather, King Herod (Pacino), drunkenly promises whatever she desires if she performs the erotically charged "Dance of the Seven Veils" for him. Her demand for the head of John the Baptist - the only man whom Herod fears - leaves the king in a terrible position.

Wilde Salomé: the documentary (directed by Pacino) takes us on a journey that focuses on his fascination and obsession for Wilde's work after seeing the play performed in London with Stephen Berkoff in the role that Pacino would go on to fill.

The double bill will screen in the UK on Sunday, September 21st hosted by Stephen Fry, in conversation with Pacino and Chastain. Chastain made her Broadway debut in The Heiress in 2012.
