Rabe was forced drop out due to a scheduling conflict with a previous commitment to perform in “Much Ado about Nothing” at Shakespeare in the Park.

The Commander Lyme character is one of the leaders of District 13 and hails from District 2 as a past victor of a Hunger Games.

Go inside Lady Gaga's New York City apartment

As part of her MTV Takeover on Friday (April 4) —which takes place all day on MTV, MTV Hits and Logo TV — the Mother Monster invited MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway into her New York City apartment for an afternoon tea before her Thursday-night gig at Roseland Ballroom.

And as you'd expect from a place previously inhabited by Liza Minnelli and Tony Bennett, it's a pretty nice place.

But the best part wasn't the swanky chandelier or plush sofa, but rather the rooftop view overlooking Central Park.

"The most important thing to me about this place is I can come out here and stand outside. That's the best thing. I miss going outside," she told Sway, saying she often has to go outside in disguise. "Such is life, I'm blessed in many ways."

Broadway honors Alison Janney, drags Frozen

On March 31, New York’s MCC Theater held its raucous Miscast gala, an annual fundraiser honoring one veteran theater artist — this year, the fearless Allison Janney — with a concert program line-up that features Broadway stars performing songs typically sung by the opposite gender. Last year, you might remember Jeremy Jordan and Jonathan Groff stopping the show with Smash’s “Let Me Be Your Star.” (oh shit don't skip this link it's pretty great) This year was no different, but we’ll get to that. First, Janney.

"I don't know what's feminine for 'mensch,' but it's her," said "Mom" creator Chuck Lorre in a recorded video, as Ms. Janney slumped down in her seat next to her friend, NBC honcho Bob Greenblatt, who produced the musical "9 to 5" in which Ms. Janney starred.

"What is going on?" Ms. Janney asked. "You can't even imagine what I thought tonight was going to be and what it actually is."

She said that in her early years as an actress, people told her she would never work. Because she's so tall, "I was told that I would play aliens. I think I would play a really good alien."

Since then she’s earned two Tony nominations, won two Drama Desk Awards, as well as her well-loved run as C.J. on The West Wing. For Janney, it all goes back to theater.

“I believe that any actor worth their salt has to have done theater,” says Janney, "When I did West Wing, all of those actors I worked with came from New York theater, and I think it makes a difference. Actors on Broadway, we have a similar language.”

But oh, let’s talk about the evening’s big showstopper: Jeremy Jordan, of Newsies and Smash fame, had the crowd going berserk as he performed the now-iconic Idina Menzel anthem “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen. Here's video of Jordan’s gender-bending performance.

9(5) Burning Summer Movie Questions!

Will Channing Tatum Save the Wachowskis? Did Time Off Hurt Angelina Jolie?

Sure people will see “Spider-Man,” but what about Seth MacFarlane's latest movie?

The summer movie season is getting underway earlier than ever this year with Friday's release of Marvel's “Captain America:Winter Soldier,” and Fox's sequel to “Rio” the week after.

But the real blockbuster pile-up begins in May. Every week for four months, studios will release at least one movie — sometimes two or three — they expect to gross at least $100 million. Some of them — sequels like “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction” — are guaranteed to make money. But there are plenty of franchise aspirants that could self-destruct. Think “After Earth” or “Lone Ranger” last summer.

Studios will look to Angelina Jolie, Channing Tatum and Seth MacFarlane to guide them through the sand traps. But none of them are sure bets, which makes this summer all the more interesting. Here are the nine biggest questions for Hollywood over the next few months.

‘Wreck-It Ralph 2′ currently in the works at Disney, says composer

Wreck-It Ralph composer Henry Jackman says that Disney is currently working on the story for a planned sequel.

In an interview with Collider, Jackman was hesitant to say more because he considers Wreck-It Ralph 2 to be a project already in development.

“I can’t tell you more, not because I’m being coy, but I believe that it is officially on the cards,” he said. “I don’t know any more other than a story is indeed being written. I’d be very surprised not to. I’m not blowing my own trumpet. Forget about the music. Just the movie itself I thought was a fantastically imaginative and creative piece of work. Rich [Moore], the director, actually got involved in the writing. There was another writer and I can’t remember his name (Editor’s note: it’s Phil Johnston). Just as a concept, it would be almost remiss of them not to write another one. It’s a great idea and it’s a great character.”

The animated film following a video game character in search of a better reputation grossed $189 million in the United States and $281 million internationally. Voice actors include John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, and Jane Lynch.

Speaking to Hypable to promote the DVD and Blu-ray launch of Wreck-It Ralph in February 2013, director Rich Moore told us of an idea for the sequel that he and Reilly were intrigued by.

“Are there other Ralphs [in this world we were introduced to in the original]? What would happen if another Fix It Felix, Jr. game was plugged in?” he asked. “Are there other Ralphs that are more contemporary? Is there another version of the game that was made for mobile? Are there those kind of Super Smash Bros types games where all the characters are gathered in a fighting game? What would that be like for Ralph to come face to face with those different iterations of himself?”

Wreck-It Ralph was Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 2012 film. It was followed by the wildly successful Frozen last year. Next up is Big Hero 6 this November and Zootopia in 2016.

Thanks to Collider for the interview quote.

In the works isn't confirmed, but it's a possibility.

Alek Wek Talks Meeting Lupita Nyong'o

Lupita Nyong'o has been vocal about her admiration for supermodel Alek Wek, and apparently the feeling is mutual!

Lupita has the highest praise for the 36-year-old South Sudanese British model, and she even mentioned Alek in her acceptance speech at Essence's Black Women in Hollywood award ceremony.

"When I saw Alek, I inadvertently saw a reflection of myself that I could not deny," said Lupita. "Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty."

We caught up Alek at Montblanc's Meisterstück 90th Anniversary Dinner in NYC last night, and asked her what it felt like to be honored by Lupita that way. "I was very humbled," she said. "We are all very different, but as women we have to celebrate one another's beauty."

And Alek actually got to thank Lupita for the sweet words in person, because the two stars met for the first time. And naturally, it was nothing but love.

"I told her you are so inspiring," said Alek. "I said thank you so much for always saying those beautiful words about me!"

She gushed about Lupita, explaining how deep her mutual respect runs. "Lupita made it not because of her skin color, but because of her wonderful words of saying you should never let anyone stop you," explained Alek. "No one can define you better than yourself. We all fall, but it's how you pick yourself up and dust yourself off."

FKA twigs in Vogue April 2014

DREAM STREET: FKA twigs brings her hypnotic sound stateside

"It's a simpler life - very pretty, very quiet," says Tahliah Barnett of her childhood in Gloucestershire, known for its rolling hills and castle ruins. "It's magical, but I never quite fit in." Under the monikor FKA twigs, the 26-year-old Brit is still standing out, with eerie melodies and breathtaking videos that have made her one of music's most intriguing new figures.

Her nickname dates from an early start in ballet. "When I danced, my bones cracked. Somebody named me Twigs because I was always snapping like one," she says with a laugh. After moving to London, she switched to music and in 2012 put out an EP that earned her comparisons to Aaliyah. It was the release of her critically acclaimed EP 2, though, that revealed her a category-shattering force. Coproduced by Arca, it combines the seemingly disparate sounds of nineties R&B and ambient electronica. Tracks like "Papi Pacify" and "Ultraviolet" explore female desire, while videos like "Water Me" in which she sheds over sized tears in an homage to Alice in Wonderland, suggest she is less interested in entertaining than being a provocateur. "I don't care about looking beautiful. Make me look weird; exaggerate me," Barnett says.

She's now putting the finishing touches on her highly anticipated debut album, but in her downtime enjoys taking a dance class or listening to the likes of Edith Piaf and Antony and the Johnsons. Even with a nomination for the BBC's Sound of 2014 prize, she retains a small town humility. "People talk about compromising their artistry, but I just believe in the compromise of being a decent person."

Remembering Kurt - 20 Years Later

Kurt Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 5, 1994.

The Nirvana frontman's suicide was an epochal event for most of Generation X and has resurfaced in the news recently with newly released photographs of the singer's death scene.

But Cobain continues to live on through his music. As long as there are musicians, there will be new interpretations of Nirvana songs, and as long as there are young people, there will be an appreciation for Cobain's raw pathos and deft hand with melody.

To commemorate his life are these photos – including art Cobain did as a child – and the video above.

The photos are from Life's new tribute volume, Remembering Kurt Cobain: 20 Years Later, which is now available on newsstands and in bookstores everywhere.

The video is from journalist and Nirvana fan Dave Seminara, who takes viewers through the Aberdeen, Wash., home where Cobain spent most of his youth.

Bruce Timm Returns to BATMAN with Animated Short

This is big news for fans of Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and really any of the DC Comics television projects taking place in the “Timmverse.” Bruce Timm, the man who, along with Paul Dini and many others, is responsible for bringing everyone’s favorite dour becaped crime fighter to animated supremacy, is back with a new short which will debut April 9th on Cartoon Network, Comics Alliance and Newsarama are reporting.

The Timm-designed version of Batman will return for a short entitled Batman: Strange Days which will pit the Caped Crusader against the nefarious Dr. Hugo Strange. We’ve got the first set of images from the short, which apparently takes place on Mt. Olympus during a 1940s movie. I’m guessing, of course.

This short will be part of Cartoon Network’s DC Nation block, which will air after Teen Titans Go!, recently relocated to Wednesdays at 6:30pm ET. Timm was the man behind a slew of Warner Bros. and DC animated projects dating back to the early ’90s and was the Supervising Producer for DC’s line of direct-to-DVD animated features until 2013, when he stepped down to do his own things. One of those things happened to be last October’s Superman 75th Anniversary short, and he’s back, now that it’s Batman’s 75th anniversary year. Timm and Batman are two great tastes that taste great together.

Once again, this short will debut April 9th after Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network.

Sarah Jessica Parker Fires Back On Twitter About Her Twins

Sarah Jessica Parker jumped puddles with her 4-year-old twins Tabitha and Loretta while walking them to school on Monday (March 31). The actress later went shopping at the gourmet food store Citarella.

On Thursday (April 3) – Parker showed how upset she was at self-described “relationship expert” Sarah J. Symonds on Twitter. Apparently Symonds – author of Having an Affair? A Handbook for the Other Woman – made a comment on how Parker’s children don’t look like her and insinuates they are not her biological children. Tabitha and Loretta were born to a gestational carrier in 2009.

That caused the Sex and the City star to tweet: “Your anonymity doesn’t diminish your outrageous and vulgar tweet. And your deletion only reveals your cowardice. @SarahJSymonds.”

She added, "I’m certain there isn’t a woman on this planet who would support your specific kind of cruelty. No apology, no explanation. @SarahJSymonds.”

The 49-year-old also followed up with the messages, “You should be ashamed @SarahJSymonds. I hope more people join me in voicing their objection to and holding accountable… (cont) and “…uninformed and unkind women like yourself who find pleasure and delight in attacking other women. @SarahJSymonds.”

Parker thanked her supporters before the end of the night.

“Before I go to sleep I want to thank everyone for coming to my defense today. I didnt relish the opportunity to publicly reprimand. But the words tossed so casually about my children and their provenance I could not abide. Nor are they true.”

Five (3) Things We’ve Learned in Five Years of Box Office Reports

Five years ago this week, TIME.com launched its Box Office Report column. Each Sunday, or Monday on holiday weekends, I’ve laden readers with stats and analysis on the business of show: the winners, losers and trends of new movies.

The occasion of this anniversary (for which, hint, the traditional gift is wood) got me to wondering what’s changed in the film industry over the past half-decade. It turns out: lots.

2. Women do matter. For decades, Hollywood has trusted one narrow demographic — young males — to subsidize its big-budget productions. In fact, the gender split in the domestic audience is 50-50: women attend as many movies as men do. The studios must have figured that the few femme-angled blockbusters (like Mamma Mia!, which earned $610 million worldwide in 2008) were flukes, and that, in the absence of “women’s pictures,” the gals would go to movies made for guys. Statistics seemed to bear out that prejudice: Of the 12 top-grossing films of 2011, only one — The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 — boasted a leading character who was female.

Credit the Twilight success, which spurred other gynocentric franchises based on Young Adult novels, and the skew of girl-power animated features for the return of that beleaguered majority — women — to movie marquees. In 2012 The Hunger Games, Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Pixar’s Brave were among the year’s top eight films. And last year three of the top six had female protagonists: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Frozen and Gravity — all released in Oct. or Nov., outside the usual blockbuster summer season. Indeed, Catching Fire, with Jennifer Lawrence in the lead, became the first top-grossing film of any year since 1965 (Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music) with a woman in the primary, starring role.

Collapse )

And on a personal note: A (noninflationary) billion thanks to readers and editors for this first five years. We’ll check back in 2019 to see if the numbers and meanings of movies have felt other seismic changes.

Farrah Abraham Thinks Jessica Alba Should Play Her In A Movie.

On Why She Almost Didn't Finish Writing Her Erotica: There’s a lot of heavy story work in the writing, but then it’s very hot and sexual when you’re writing it. In all honesty, it has been very hard for me to write the sexual scenes because it turns your mind on and it’s very hard to finish.

On Why It Will Be Better Than 50 Shades: It will have better sex scenes and also a more compelling story. The only research I really do — if we’re talking about research on the computer — I’m like, ‘Am I using the right sexual word?’ So people don’t get confused. I mean, there’s equally — among my friends and people I’ve run into and me — I think we’ve had enough sexual experiences for a lifetime so we’re sharing some of them.

On Her Character's Name: The names just came to my mind and I was pretty much set on Fallon Opal. So for me to have feedback from my friends and they said ‘we really like those names and they’re interesting,’ I kept them as they were.

On A Movie Version Of Her Erotica: If it were turned into a movie, which I think would also be awesome in its own sense, I just know I would have Jessica Alba play Fallon Opal. I think she’s very relatable to myself and Fallon Opal, and I think she’s had a very good career and I would trust her playing that part.

On Being A Writer: It’s very important for me to have a very awesome and authentic storyline because that’s me as a writer. If I’m having all the thoughts and fantasies and also taking true life experiences and I’m twisting that all together.

Courtney Love interview: 'There will be no jazz hands on Smells Like Teen Spirit'

On the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, his widow Courtney Love talks to Neil McCormick about protecting Nirvana's legacy, reconciling with her daughter and making the best music of her life

Courtney Love glances at a news feed on her phone. “Nirvana to reunite with Courtney Love as singer,” she reads aloud. “Yeah, that’ll be the day,” she snorts. “It’s just nonsense.” Speculative stories are bubbling around Love as we reach the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s death on April 5th, 1994. “It’s hard for me, but I think it’s much harder for Frances,” she says of their 21-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. “She has no memories of her father. Not one. So that sucks.”

When her late husband’s seminal grunge band are inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York, on Thursday, April 10th, mother and daughter will collect the award on Cobain’s behalf, alongside surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoslevic. “I wasn’t in Nirvana, but it’s what widows and kids do. And it does give me ownership of the mythology, rather than just handing over to Krist and Dave their ownership.”

Gabby Douglas is headed back to Iowa.

USA TODAY Sports has learned that the Olympic champion and coach Liang Chow have agreed to work together again, eight months after she left to rejoin her family in Los Angeles. Douglas is expected in the gym Monday, said a person close to the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Chow and the gymnast are trying to temper expectations.

Douglas likely will spend the next few months conditioning and seeing whether there's enough time for her to pull off a comeback before the Rio Olympics in 2016. Comebacks are notoriously tough for gymnasts, who can feel as if they're starting from scratch after just a few days out of the gym.

But if there's anyone who can pull it off, it's Douglas, who went from an unknown to the Olympic champion in less than two years, and Chow, whose gymnasts have won six medals at the last two Summer Games, three of them gold.

Rashida Jones: 'Girls Can't Invest In Their Looks'

Long and Short Videos @ Source

Actress Rashida Jones caused controversy last fall when she tweeted her frustration about the over-sexualization of young pop stars. She was immediately bombarded online for “slut shaming.” In response, the actress penned an article for Glamour magazine called “Why Is Everyone Getting Naked?” on what she called the “pornification” of pop culture. In her essay, Jones wrote that she was fed up with overly sexual images of artists such as Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj. “Every star interprets 'sexy' the same way: lots of skin, lots of licking of teeth, lots of bending over. I find this oddly ... boring," she wrote." Can't I just like a song without having to take an ultrasound tour of some pop star's privates?"
