Quick Breakdown of Barrel Sequence in 'Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug'

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

We just recently saw a cool featurette showing Benedict Cumberbatch doing motion-capture work to play the titular dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Now another look behind the scenes has popped up looking at the somewhat silly, but impressive dwarf barrel escape sequence from the sequel that feels almost straight out of a Steven Spielberg film. Peter Jackson pops up on set as this featurette shows a combination of the footage shot and the visual effects that came together to make this fun sequence work on the big screen. It's a short featurette, but it shows just how much went into this small part of the film.

Here's the featurette on the barrel sequence The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug from Wired:

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, being directed by Peter Jackson as three separate movies, is set in Middle-Earth 60 years before Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in a trilogy ten years ago. The films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, were shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest cameras. The Hobbit follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits Blu-Ray & DVD early this spring on April 8th.

Adele and Rihanna score UK's latest million selling singles

According to the Official Charts Company’s sales data, Adele’s Rolling In The Deep and Rihanna’s Diamonds have now both sold over a million copies in the UK.

Rolling In The Deep and Diamonds have become only the 144th and 145th singles to reach this sales milestone, respectively, since the Official Singles Chart began in 1952. the enlightened sisters: shailene woodley and laura dern

When Laura Dern was shooting the upcoming tearjerker Fault in Our Stars opposite Woodley, the pair quickly bonded over their shared experience as former child actors with fierce hands-on mothers. Dern recalls one of their many dinners near the Pittsburgh shoot and delivers a spot-on Woodley impression.

"Shailene's like, 'Hey, wow!' Big open smile," says Dern. " 'God, great, I looked at your menu. It's so awesome. Hey, what kind of oil do you guys cook in? Oh, you do? Hmm, you never use beef fat from sustainable farms where it's grass-fed? Oh wow, you guys are open to that? Cool. Can we have a tour of your kitchen?' "

The next thing Dern remembers is touring a meat locker in the restaurant's basement, discussing how to cut the cattle in the most honorable way and how to use every part of the animal. "People might think they're saving the planet, taking half steps," says Dern. "Shailene is taking it to such a different level."

Dern says the two actresses have become so close that she considers Woodley a member of her family. "There are times when I have called my house when out of town and found out that Shailene's over here making dinner with my children," she says.

Is Anna Friel and Rhys Ifan's relationship over?

Friel-ing a bit lonely? Anna looks for love after Rhys Ifans rift

They were known as the most affectionate couple in showbusiness – regularly seen smooching at parties and premieres. But is Anna Friel and Rhys Ifans’s three-year relationship now over?

Anna was overheard telling friends at a party in Notting Hill last week that she was on the lookout for someone new, apparently confirming that she and Rhys had split.

‘Her friend was asking her whether there was anyone new on the scene. She replied, “No, not really” but it was clear she meant she was on the lookout,’ says my source at the party.

The 37-year-old former Brookside actress and Welshman Rhys, 46, had spent a lot of time apart in recent months.

Anna lives in London with her nine-year-old daughter, while Notting Hill star Rhys has been busy in LA filming Elementary, the US version of Sherlock.

Tamar Braxton Weighs In On Britney Spears’ Album Sales?

With sales and a mainstream appeal that’s made her the envy of many a R&B diva, Tamar Braxton undoubtedly finds herself in the ‘good books’ of any familiar with her genre, and its staple acts.

However, by way of a comment published on her official Twitter account, she may have scored a new found enemy in Britney Spears’ fan base this week, after she weighed in on a message published by the ‘Chart News’ twitter account on the icon’s latest album ‘Britney Jean.’

Upon giving an update on the sales of Spears’ latest album, ‘Chart News‘ received a response from Braxton’s longtime friend/collaborator Tiyon Mack, questioning the authenticity of the figure provided.

Minutes later, the Grammy-nominated Braxton responded to her pal’s tweet, ruffling the feathers of Britney’s fans when she suggested that 241,000 may have been the album’s chart position…and not its current sales figure.

Marc Anthony Sent Security To Ex's House After She Was Repeatedly Called A Whore Over Bullhorn

Marc Anthony says ex-wife had to sell her home because the wife of the married man she was banging was yelling "whore" through a bullhorn in front of her house and wouldn't stop.

Dayanara Torres is trying to increase her child support payments from $13K a month to $113K. She says she's so strapped for cash she had to sell her home and now she's living with the 2 kids in a hovel of an apartment in the San Fernando Valley.

But Marc tells a very different story. In legal docs he says Dayanara was SHAMED out of the house because the wife of her adulterous lover took to the sidewalk "with a bullhorn yelling 'whore' for the whole neighborhood to hear."

Marc says the scorned woman was so unrelenting, he sent his own security to help.
And, he says, part of her financial plight is her own doing, because she ended up selling the house at a loss. Dayanara denies the whole bullhorn incident.

Jonathan Groff on tonight's 'Looking' finale

"I've been dying to go back to San Francisco," says Jonathan Groff, who plays Patrick in HBO's Looking. Now he will, with the gay-centric show officially renewed for a second season and production kicking off this summer.

The season one finale airs on March 9, and Groff spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about what to expect, why Patrick singing would be horrendous and that drunken kiss between Patrick and Russell Tovey's Kevin.

HR: First off, congratulations on season two.

Thank you. We are so stoked. We've been keeping our fingers crossed for a season two since the day we wrapped. We had so much fun, it's ridiculous. We try to get together every week and watch the episodes together.

You and Russell Tovey have such chemistry. And then there's the kiss from last week's episode.

We did a lot of takes of that kiss. I didn't know what was going to happen until I finally saw the episode because that kiss was done in so many different ways. I think the way they decided to do it was perfect. It's fitting, especially considering the finale. You don't want to blow your wad too soon, so to speak.

Kevin Bacon was initially upset by the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game

KEVIN Bacon, actor and person least degrees away from Kevin Bacon, admitted to Buzzfeed that he was initially upset and annoyed by the 20-year-old game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

“It was so annoying,” he told interviewer Jarett Wiselman.

“I thought it was a joke at my expense. I thought somebody was trying to pick the biggest loser they could find and joke about the fact I could be connected to Laurence Olivier in two steps. When you fight so hard and put your sweat and blood into trying to have your work speak for itself, I found it belittling.”

He thought the game would soon “go the way of pogo sticks and pet rocks,” but now that it’s been around more than two decades, he’s stopped worrying about it.

He also admits he wouldn’t be very good at the game himself because, as he admits, “Honestly, I’ve truly forgotten who I have and haven’t worked with at this point.”

‘Vogue Italia’ shows Dutch model posing in blackface, ethnic wear

The controversy surrounding blackface has been reignited after another high-fashion magazine has engaged in an act that has been deemed racially-insensitive as part of a newly-released fashion spread.

Vogue Italia’s March 2014 issue shows dutch model Saskia de Brauw in images where she is seen plastered in colorful paint and wearing ethnic gear such as accentuated head pieces and tribal clothing while posing with animals.

According to the Huffington Post, the fashion spread was shot by photographer Steven Meise and is entitled “Abracadabra.” Other photos in the editorial show de Brauw making gnarling faces and wrestling with faux animals like tigers, goats and sheep.

The editorial is now one of several fashion publications who have enlisted white models to dress, pose and portray racially-insensitive imagery.

“It’s 2014. We should not still be seeing this kind of editorial in our fashion magazines,” writes Elizabeth Licata at The Gloss.

This isn’t the first time the fashion magazine has enlisted the use of “blackface.” Vogue Netherlands was under fire for a May 2013 spread which showed a white model posing in blackface in spread titled “Heritage Heroes.”

Lindsay Lohan 'about to sign a $1m deal to turn her rehab diary into a memoir'

Lindsay Lohan is reportedly about to sign a $1million deal to turn her rehab diary into a memoir.

The troubled star's reflections will be used as the basis for an autobiography, detailing her descent from child star to her spell in court-ordered rehab.

The deal is said to be ready to be signed with respected publisher HarperCollins, after Lohan's representatives offered sample pages of the proposed book.

'It’s more or less an autobiography, but she had a minimal number of sample pages,' a publishing source told the New York PostPage Six.

Lindsay’s agent, Scott Waxman, had meeting with various publishing houses.

But his initial attempts to win offers of $5million were unsuccessful amid concerns Lohan would not deliver the finished book.

'There was initial interest, but everybody backed off. There was concern she wouldn’t deliver,' the source told Page Six.

I don't want to do it again and it look like a bootleg of 'Ladies Night'. I want us to all be on the top of our game like we were back then and make a part two but have it be bigger and better. I want us females to unite and do something that would knock the world off its feet."

Da Brat also speaks about her bond with another woman in the entertainment business, Mariah Carey. "I first met her when working on the remix to 'Always Be My Baby'," Da Brat says. "I felt like she was just like me, but she had to keep it shielded. She wanted to do the things I did and talk the way I talked. She was signed to Sony and had this reputation to uphold of being a diva. That's why we jelled. She was living through me and we became the best of friends. Debating Matthew McCona-slay's chances of winning an EMMY to go with his Oscar - how can he do it?

As Matthew McConaughey was accepting his Academy Award last Sunday on ABC, HBO had aired/was airing/was about to air/ (depending on your time zone) True Detective, which, like Dallas Buyers’ Club, featured a breakout performance by McConaughey.

What are the chances that that McConaughey takes home an Emmy for his performance as detective/philosopher Rust Cohle when the Emmys roll around in August? It largely depends on what category True Detective competes in.

The Emmys slice things up more finely than the Oscars, making a distinction between, say, a drama series and a comedy. And, relevant to the discussion of True Detective’s chances, a drama series and a miniseries.

True Detective breaks new ground in terms of its format. The eight episodes function as a single story with a closed story arc. The stars, McConaughey and Woody Harrelson won’t be back next season. But in its marketing campaigns, HBO has been reticent to call True Detective a mini series, because it will return next year, with writer/showrunner Nic Pizzolatto at the helm.

The 20-something actresses holding their own in cinema

With the rise of young adult cinema and the cinematic rise of young stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone, there finally seems to be a place for young women in cinema to play something other than the damsel in distress or love interest there to simply provide eye candy.

Here are some of our favourite 20-something women holding their own in the world of cinema at the moment. Who’s yours?

Emma Watson (23)
The Harry Potter star has left the franchise behind, gone to university in America and selected some much lower key roles in films including My Week With Marilyn, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and this year’s Noah.
She clearly has a wise head on her shoulders, beyond her 23 years, thanks largely to being in the business for so long already! Whatever role she chooses to take on next, we will no doubt enjoy watching what she makes of it. Though I adored her as Hermione Granger, smart choices have meant that people can see beyond Harry Potter and appreciate the talented actress behind it all.Collapse )
