More about the animation sequences in Cosmos from producer Kara Vallow + new images!

Images via National Geographic

If you happen to watch Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey on Sunday night at 9pm—and you should, because it’s incredible—then you’re going to notice a lot of really gorgeously animated sequences over the course of the series. We wanted to know what went into making these parts of the show, so we went straight to the source.

Kara Vallow might not be a name you’re very familiar with, and that’s okay; she tends to stay behind the scenes on the production side of animation. Her resume, however, is pretty stacked: she’s worked on Dilbert, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Johnny Bravo and Drawn Together, as well as the Jessica Yu documentary, In The Realms of the Unreal, about the life and work of painter Henry Darger. Of course, she’s probably best known for her work with Seth MacFarlane, which includes Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show. She was kind enough to speak to us this week about her involvement with Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey, and what went into creating such a distinct, integral part of the series.

I also got the chance to speak with Ann Druyen last week as part of Nat Geo’s Space Camp experience, and she said that the animation sequences were something Seth [MacFarlane] was really interested in doing from the get-go.

What was that process like from your point of view? When did you first get involved?

Cronut inventor Dominique Ansel is enticing sweet tooths once again with a new invention. The New York pastry chef has created something called the chocolate chip cookie milk shot.

It's a wonder no one thought of this before. A shot glass made of a chocolate chip cookie, filled with milk. L.A. bakers, you listening?

Ansel posted a picture of the cookie shots on Instagram on Wednesday, announcing he will serve the shots at SXSW, the annual music, film and interactive conference in Austin, Texas, Sunday. The picture already has more than 2,000 likes.

Artistic Poster for Ayoade's 'The Double' Arrives

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One of the many indie films we really think deserves to break out this year is the latest feature from British filmmaker/actor/comedian Richard Ayoade, a funky dystopian sci-fi dark comedy based on Dostoyevsky's The Double, starring Jesse Eisenberg. The film premiered at TIFF last year and we've been promoting it with reviews, trailers, interviews and plenty of other posters in the past, but this new poster is the best one yet. This new UK poster for The Double has a very minimalistic, artistic feel to it, like it was hand-drawn. A single ray of light shines down across a city on one man. It's impressive, and I'm glad it's an official poster.

Tragic death spurs 'Slates for Sarah' movement across Hollywood

A death in the entertainment industry has caused widespread grief and anger throughout the community, and has led to the widespread 'Slates for Sarah' movement.

On February the 20th, Sarah Jones, was tragically killed in the process of filming a stunt, involving a train, on the set of Midnight Rider. Investigations are underway in determining who is to blame for the camera assistant's death, with Georgia law authorities treating the tragedy as negligent homicide.

Initial reports are suggesting that shortcuts in production led to the unfortunate event, which also injured four other people. During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Jones's father describes how she had commented: "Some of the people asking her questions should have known more than her and she thought that was odd."

Regardless of who is at fault, the event has highlighted the need for increased safety measures on set. It has spurred numerous filmmakers to honor her memory by posting pictures of slates in memory for Sarah to the SlatesforSarah Facebook page.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the camera assistant's parents describe their reaction to the response to Sarah's death: "We are both overwhelmed with the response, the love and the condolences from the public. It's overwhelming, that one person's life can make such a difference, it's incredible. It's part of therapy. It's helping us get through this whole ordeal. It does offer some level of comfort to have so much support. It's good to think that it appears that this will make a difference."

ACMs, Country Stars Give to St. Jude's, Shakira Goes Country!

miranda-lambert-600They're not only happy to be nominated – they're happy to take the stage and rock out.

Academy of Country Music Award nominees Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, George Strait, Keith Urban and The Band Perry will be among the performers on the April 6 telecast, PEOPLE can reveal.

Lambert is tied with Tim McGraw for the most ACM nominations this year seven. Urban has six, while Shelton is among four acts that have five nominations each.

Bryan and Shelton will also be the evening's cohosts at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, having teamed up in the same roles for last year's entertaining show.

In addition to his MGM Grand performance and hosting responsibilities, Bryan will rush over to the Mandalay Bay Events Center during the show for a special performance with Florida Georgia Line at the 4th Annual ACM Fan Jam.

The 49th annual Academy of Country Music Awards will air April 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. More acts and presenters will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Dierks Bentley, Tyler Farr, Florida Georgia Line and Justin Moore are a few of the celebrities that stepped up for the second and final day of the Taste of Country fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. However, each will be quick to point to the kids as the real stars. And indeed, on this day, they were.
Lela Moody’s touching story and adorable smile won hearts over. The little girl was just six weeks old when her mother and father were faced with an impossible decision: remove her left eye, or choose chemotherapy.

A 2-year-old Tyler Bates was displaying flu-like symptoms, but his mother Jennifer knew something else was wrong. What doctors found shocked her, but three years later, the tiny Texan is doing well, thriving in karate and baseball.
Bentley, Moore and Eli Young Band were three of the artists who said St. Jude meant even more to them after having kids.

Sara Evans agrees! Tyler Farr and the boys of Florida Georgia Line don’t have kids, and neither does Chase Rice, but that didn’t stop any of them from speaking passionately about what St. Jude means to them. Newcomers Leah Turner, the Swon Brothers also stood up to urge their fans to donate to St. Jude, as did ‘We Are Tonight’ singer Billy Currington.

Thanks to all artists — and readers — who helped make our first-ever St. Jude webathon a success. Over a dozen acts called or recorded video for Taste of Country, then retweeted or shared on Facebook. Thanks also to the families who opened their hearts to spill stories for ToC readers. It’s for kids like Tyler and Lela that we’re fighting!

When Shakira wanted to get a little bit country on her upcoming album, she approached fellow "The Voice" coach Blake Shelton. The result is "Medicine," a country song that's light enough on fiddle and steel to work on pop radio.

"I told him I wanted to work with Nashville people," Shakira told Billboard's Leila Cobo for the magazine's current cover story. "I was a little tired of L.A. I wanted people with another point of view, real people with roots with whom I feel comfortable working in the same room. And I told Blake I wanted to do a song that had the narrative of a country song, that was picturesque, that was a real song. But it also needed to suit me, because after all, I'm Colombian."

"I think I have real folk roots in my previous albums," she added. "The acoustic guitars, that type of narrative, songs that have a traditional structure. And I said to [Shelton], 'I want to do that type of song.' When I wrote the song I didn't know what direction to go in and I did like eight versions. Dance, pop…but I said no, this is a country song."

The bilingual star worked on the song with writer Hillary Lindsey and producer Mark Bright - who both have collaborated with Carrie Underwood, among others.

"I think she did a hell of a job," Shelton said. "One thing is for someone like her to say she's going to do something and another is to do it. And I'll be damned, a month and a half ago she wrote me and said, 'I wrote the song, and I want you to tell me what you think.' And I said: 'Gosh dang, you did exactly what you said you'd do. It sounds like a hit song.'

"I was so nervous. You have no idea. I was so scared he was going to say, 'No, Shakira. I love you, but no,'" recalled Shakira. "But then he said, 'Sister, I love you this is great.'

"And then she said, 'Well, do you want to sing on it?'" Shelton added. "I was honored to do it."

Shakira and Shelton sang each other's hits during the opener of this season's Feb. 24 premiere of "The Voice," when Shakira performed a rocking version of "Boys Round Here," and Shelton took a shot at Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever," on which she joined him for the chorus.

"She was one of those huge international stars I had only seen from a distance," he said. "…And she feels like someone I had known my whole life. She's motherly to everyone she meets. I love being around her and seeing how she treats the group of people who travel with her. She's just a real person."

2014 TV Pilot Season Trend: More Black Actors

Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Anthony Anderson and Octavia Spencer are among those starring in pilots this season.

With Scandal ruling primetime and star Kerry Washington becoming an awards-season fixture, more pilots led by black actors are in the works this season.

Viola Davis has been tapped to star in Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers' How to Get Away With Murder at ABC, Romany Malco and Anthony Anderson will top the network's Kevin Hart and Kenya Barris comedy pilots, respectively. NBC hasThe Office's Craig Robinson and Deception's Meagan Good leading the call sheet in Mr. Robinson and sci-fi drama Babylon Fields, respectively.

At Fox, Lee Daniels' Empire pairs Hustle & Flowduo Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson as the backbone of a hip-hop label, Jada Pinkett Smith terrorizes Batman origin story Gotham, and Octavia Spencer heads the hospital drama Red Band Society. Of these, Robinson's comedy already has been picked up to series, whileGotham has a series commitment attached. Not to be outdone, CBS has Halle Berry starring in its summer sci-fi drama series Extant.

And that's only midway through casting season.

American Apparel releases controversial new ad with topless former-Muslim model

American Apparel has sparked controversy once again with a new ad starring a topless former-Muslim model from Bangladesh.
The bold image, which appears in Vice magazine's U.S. and Canada editions, stars 22-year-old Maks, a merchandiser for American Apparel, who was born in Dhaka but has lived in California since the age of four.

The words 'Made in Bangladesh' are printed across her chest - referring to the woman, of course, not her jeans, a means of raising awareness about American Apparel's fair labor practices - all its clothing is made in downtown LA.
The powerful image is accompanied by a description of Maks, revealing how she was raised a strict Muslim but 'distanced herself' from her Islamic faith as she grew up, in search of her 'own identity.'
The words explain that the bare-chested beauty 'doesn't feel the need to identify herself as an American or a Bengali and is not content to fit her life into anyone else's conventional narrative.

'That's what makes her essential to the mosaic that is Los Angeles, and unequivocally, a distinct figure in the ever expanding American Apparel family.'
The striking ad is likely to cause some upset among traditional Muslims for linking a half naked model to a country where Islam is the dominant religion and nudity is frowned upon.

The Walking Dead Game Season 2 Episode 2 Review

The Walking Dead Season 2 kicked off to a weak start last December, at least compared to the high standards the first season set. But any misgivings that I carried from that shaky beginning were discarded by the end of "A House Divided," the second episode of the season.
If the last episode was an adrenaline-packed intro to Clementine's status quo in the new season, Episode 2 is the pause to catch our breath. And it's so much better off for that breathing room, providing space to develop new characters and call back to last season.

At the outset of "A House Divided," Clementine is still recovering from a series of brutal events and hanging out with a new group of survivors facing their own troubles. Unlike last time, though, we actually spend a while getting to know this fresh cast. Straight-laced leader Luke, caring husband Alvin, naïve teenager Sarah — each of these surface-level archetypes is fleshed out considerably, with even more depth hinted at for future episodes.

Natasha Richardson wouldn't marry Liam Neeson if he accepted James Bond role

Liam Neeson was “heavily courted” for the role of James Bond, but turned down the martinis and bikinis because of his late wife’s wishes.

The Irish actor, whose latest film Non-Stop is top of the US box office, is renowned for his work in action movies.

But when his wife Natasha Richardson told him she would not marry him if he played 007, Neeson decided against taking up the high-profile part.

“I was heavily courted, let’s put it that way, and I’m sure some other actors were too,” the 61-year-old told the Hull Daily Mail.

“It was about 18 or 19 years ago and my wife-to-be said, 'If you play James Bond we’re not getting married'. And I had to take that on board because I did want to marry her.”

Oscar-nominated Neeson insists that he has never regretted passing on any film roles.

(3) 6 Questions We Need Answered in the True Detective Finale

HBO's mega-addictive series True Detective is coming to an end on Sunday, and before we even confront the withdrawals we'll go through without this show, we have bigger fish to fry. There are so many questions still open, it's mind-boggling to think that everything will get wrapped up. So before we see how the show ends this week, let's go over the questions that need to be answered in the finale.

Who is the Yellow King?

Obviously, this is the biggest question of them all, the answer to the series's largest mystery. It's obvious now that the deceased Reggie Ledoux, as horrible as he was, was not the Yellow King. The man responsible for the ritualistic killings — including Dora Lange (whose body is found in the premiere) and the missing Marie Fontenot (who we assume is now dead) — is still out there. Though detectives Papania and Gilbough suspect Rust, I highly doubt that, but I do think (and hope) that Rust and Marty are the ones who are about to find the infamously named villain.

Did we meet the scarred man?

The Yellow King could very well be "the scarred man," who has been mentioned several times, starting all the way back in the premiere (aka the horrible-sounding "green-eared spaghetti monster"). Episode seven gave us more to go on — while investigating the Tuttle family, a former housekeeper slips that this scarred person is related to the Tuttles, and his last name may be Childress. Then, at the end of episode seven, Papania and Gilbough are lost and driving, and who do they ask for directions? A man with scars on the lower half of his face. But is that really him? And by "him" I mean the scarred man, the Yellow King, the green-eared spaghetti monster, and the man whose horrific actions started this whole thing.

What is the carcosa?

This word, uttered by several characters so far, sounds like it's a place — probably the place of Vudon, the Mardi Gras-like ritual Rust describes to Marty in episode seven. It's not a place I would like to go, and I fear seeing it very much, yet I really hope we get to see it.

Rest of the questions at the Source

The most important question - how many Emmys will Matthew be sleeping on after tomorrow night tbh. I'm not ready to say goodbye to Rust Cohle ;_______________;

The 3D sound mixing that won “Gravity” its Oscar is going to show up in more films

It’s no surprise that Gravity took home an Oscar for sound mixing. The thriller, which puts the viewer in the open void of space, used immersive audio to great nerve-jangling effect. Gravity‘s sound effects may have put you on edge, but chances are you didn’t experience the full impact of the film’s audio.

Only those who saw Gravity in one of 300 theaters designed with a new Dolby technology heard the movie exactly as its makers intended. Announced in 2012, Dolby Atmos is “object based” sound mixing. In traditional stereo sound, a number of speakers are placed around the walls of the theater, many of them playing the same audio track. Atmos theaters have speakers all over the walls and ceiling. And when the movie’s sound is mixed, engineers work with a 3D computer simulation of the theater space, placing individual bits of audio in specific locations. So in a horror movie, the sound of a ghoul sprinting down the upstairs hall can actually be heard from above, and a more insidious scratching in the walls can come from a single speaker in the far corner of the room.

Joey Walks in on Lance Bass

Lance Bass is happily engaged to fiancé Michael Turchin, but slightly over a decade ago, the former *NSYNC singer was still in the closet.

“I came out to my family around 21, 22. It was hard, but once I ripped the Band-Aid off, it was incredible,” Lance told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Wednesday’s Access Hollywood Live. “Everyone was so supportive – my family loves me just [the way] I am.

The 34-year-old also kept his sexuality from his *NSYNC bandmates – but Joey Fatone found out by accident.

“Joey walked in on me with the guy I was
dating just kind of sitting on my lap. Straight guys don’t do that,” Lance laughed. “He was like, ‘Dude, I don’t care.’ I’m like, ‘Surprise!’ Joey was just like, ‘Dude, I don’t care. I have so many gay friends – I don’t care.’

“It was a few months after that before I told the [rest of] the guys… I don’ t think anyone was surprised,” he added.

Lance is now executive producing Lifetime’s “Celebrity Home Raiders” (which will be co-hosted by Access’ Kit Hoover), where stars will donate items from their homes to be auctioned off in support of charities.

“I started this eight years ago,” Lance said, explaining how the idea for the show came about. “I was cleaning out the *NSYNC warehouses and I was like, what are we going to do with all this stuff? I was like, I should start a website where celebrities put their stuff on there and all the money raised goes to their charity.”
