Jorn Tromolto Speaks Out About Calling Idina Menzel "Adele Dazeem" at the Oscars!

Idina Menzel didn't seem too concerned when John Travolta completely butchered her name when introducing her performance of "Let It Go" at the Oscars Sunday.

But that doesn't make anybody else who witnessed the slip-up (and then rewitnessed it thousands of times online) any less flabbergasted by Travolta seemingly calling the Tony Award-winning star "Adele Dazeem"—which, we can't impress enough, doesn't really sound at all like "Idina Menzel."

And it turns out, Travolta didn't let himself off the hook right away, either.

"I've been beating myself up all day," the Be Cool star said in a statement to E! News. "Then I thought...What would Idina Menzel say? She'd say, 'Let it go, let it go!' Idina is incredibly talented and I am so happy Frozen took home two Oscars Sunday night!"

This comes, of course, after Twitter exploded with reactionary posts and a Travoltafication name generator popped up (John Travolta, for instance, would be Jort Tzddimorltzi), becoming an instant viral hit.

And in case you somehow missed it live or otherwise...

A source told E! News Monday that Travolta had no problem with Menzel's name during rehearsals on Saturday, leaving those who witnessed his flawless run-through even more perplexed the following day.

But we were also told that the Wicked star "laughed it off" afterwards, thinking it was "so funny."

Which it was...but still pretty strange.

At least in addition to Travolta's flub, her gorgeous, powerful rendition of the now Oscar-winning song is right there living on in Internet posterity along with it.

what's your Travoltafication name, ONTD?

John Waters + Jeff Koons, the new Odd Couple

Art talks typically don’t draw stadium concert-like crowds. On Monday night, however, almost 2,000 people crowded into downtown L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre to hear filmmaker-actor-artist John Waters interview contemporary artist Jeff Koons. The event was part of the Broad museum's “Un-Private Collection” lecture series, which pairs artists from the Broad’s collection with pop cultural figures. The Pope of Trash in conversation with the King of Kitsch is undoubtedly a hot ticket. The sidewalk in front of the theater, bathed in neon from the Orpheum’s marquee, was thick with mingling showgoers.

Inside the theater, the first four rows offered a who’s who of the Los Angeles art world. Within eyeshot: artists Paul McCarthy and Ed Ruscha; former Museum of Contemporary Art director Jeffrey Deitch, who’d flown in from New York; director Gus Van Sant, former MOCA chief curator Paul Schimmel, and art book publisher Benedikt Taschen.

50 Cent Accuses Diddy of Gay Love Triangle on Instagram, Deletes It

Rapper 50 Cent continued his long history of anti-gay social media trolling on Sunday with a now-deleted Instagram post suggesting Diddy was in a gay love triangle.

50 Cent’s Mar. 2 Instagram post, which he deleted very quickly after posting, is made up of two photos: one of Steve and Diddy hugging in pink shirts, and the other of Diddy and Rick looking like they’re about to kiss thanks to the awkward angle of the photo. Fifty captioned the pic very cheekily, writing, “I ain’t saying nothing, but something ain’t right. Lmao #smsaudio.”

The Instagram was offensive — not only to Diddy, Rick, and Steve, but also to gays everywhere — and the fact that he pulled the post seems to be an acknowledgement of that.

RuPaul Trolls Pirates With Fake Album Leak on The Pirate Bay

American actor, artist and TV judge RuPaul has leaked his album "Born Naked" on The Pirate Bay, with a special surprise for those who dare to pirate it. The leak includes the first parts of every track, followed by RuPaul talking over his own music, which at times is pretty hilarious.

Unlike other leaks, however, this copy wasn’t exactly what most pirates were looking for.

At first sight the album appears to be full length, and even the start of all tracks seem legit. However, those who continue to listen are in for a surprise.

After the first minute or so the music becomes muffled, just as RuPaul breaks in with a message for the downloader.

“Girl, you done stole my album. Uh Uh, you better don’t hookah, you better get your tail on over to iTunes baby, because I want to get some of that,” is how the first track “Freaky Money” goes after a 30 second intro.

Then RuPaul continues with some random conversation, funny skits, as well as Collapse )

Thandie Newton Welcomes Son Booker Jombe

Thandie Newton has a son! The 41-year-old actress and husband Ol Parker welcomed their third child together on Monday, March 3.

"Our baby boy is finally here! Booker Jombe Parker," the Rogue actress tweeted on Tuesday. "Born joyously at home yesterday."

The English actress and her English writer/director husband, who wed in 1998, are already parents to two daughters: Ripley, 13, and Nico, 8. Her daughters were named after the character Ellen Ripley in the Alien films and the singer Nico.

Newton gave birth to son Booker at home, like she did her daughters. "My 3rd home birth with brilliant independent midwife Caroline Flint -- and Carole Goddard @PhoenixMidwives," she tweeted. "Keep independent midwifery alive!"

It sounds like both mom and baby are doing well after delivery. The mom of three tweeted on Wednesday: "Blissed out with @NYR_Official supplies -- from candles at the birth to Baby Balm for his skin -- organic, gorgeous and nurturing."

Jared Leto already busted up his Oscar, and where he put it

During an interview with ET Canada’s Sangita Patel on Tuesday, the Oscar winner shares some fun facts on his brand new statuette’s whereabouts after the little gold man’s brush with death.

“The Oscar is sitting in my kitchen, guarded by some vegan butter and a bag of popcorn!” reveals the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award winner. “You know, they kind of end up in the kitchen because that's the first place that I go when I get home. You put your keys down and you take off your jacket… and you put your Oscar in the kitchen.”

And it sounds like the trophy needs a little safe-keeping after a recent incident: "I was letting some of the people that I work with take a picture with the Oscar and I was carrying it down the stairs and, boom, I hit it against the stairs, the railing and I put a little nick in the back of it... so you know, that’s how it goes. It’s already lived in, as they say.”

And what’s next for the Oscar winner? “It’s been a fun week and I couldn't think of a better thing to have happen… after getting an Oscar, than to go on tour with Linkin Park,” Leto shares.

Duggar Daughters Have Code Word To Alert Brothers Of Immodest Women

The four eldest Duggar daughters write in Growing Up Duggar: It’s All About Relationships about modesty. “We do not dress modestly because we are ashamed of the body God has given us; quite the contrary. We realize that our body is a special gift from God and that He intends for it to be shared only with our future husband,” said the four adult daughters. “We avoid low-cut, cleavage-showing, gaping, or bare-shouldered tops; and when needed, we wear an undershirt. We try to make it a habit to always cover the top of our shirt with our hand when we bend over. We don’t want to play the peekaboo game with our neckline.”

The girls said they also use “Nike” as a code word to warn their 10 brothers and dad about an immodestly dressed woman.

“That’s a signal to the boys, and even to Dad, that they should nonchalantly drop their eyes and look down at their shoes as we walk past her,” the girls explained. “It’s meant to help keep the guys’ eyes from seeing things they shouldn’t be seeing. By using the single-word signal, the warning can be given quietly and discreetly.”

The company charges a pretty penny for Bagwell's services -- $800 for 2 hours, $1550 for 4 hours and $3000 for an overnight "visit." Weekends are steep -- $8K. And a full week with Bagwell -- $25K.

The owner of the service -- Garren James -- tells TMZ, Bagwell is already the second most popular escort on the website ... behind Nick Hawk.

Bagwell is married, but apparently unlike Robin Thicke, it's a true open relationship.

Teresa And Joe Giudice To Ask Judge To Serve Out Prison Terms Separately

"Real Housewives of New Jersey" stars Teresa and Joe Giudice want to serve their prison terms separately ... so at least one parent can remain with their 4 children while the other is behind bars.

Teresa and Joe's attorney Miles Feinstein tells us, the couple will ask the judge to stagger their sentences -- i.e. serve them consecutively rather than concurrently -- for the sake of their four daughters (aged four, eight, nine, and thirteen). Their sentencing date is July 8.

As we reported, the Giudices pleaded guilty Tuesday in their money fraud case -- Teresa to four counts and Joe to five. Teresa faces 21 to 27 months in prison and Joe faces up to 46.

Feinstein is confident the judge will grant their request -- he says the judge has granted similar requests before.

As for the sentences, Feinstein is trying to see the silver lining -- yes it sucks ... but he says the outcome was the best they could have hoped for. Indicted on 41 criminal counts, Feinstein says the couple originally faced 100+ years in prison ... but got off with just a few.

'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Is About To Become The Show Everyone Wanted It To Be

During Oscar night, ABC ran a very interesting promo for their hit series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

[Fury, you cycloptic amoral piece of shit]

It seems after months of internet hate, the (highly rated) ABC series is about to become the show people have wanted it to be since the beginning. A show that does the comic book thing. A show that says it lives in a world, the world in this case being the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it couldn’t have gotten here overnight, because had it been this show out of the gate, it would have failed catastrophically.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a show that needed to be built away from the gimmick of the MCU connected world. As Joss Whedon perfectly put it during development “we couldn’t have a show that said ‘Iron Man was just here, but he left right before you showed up’.” Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needed to take time being its own thing. Living by its own rules. Now that it has, Marvel’s finally ready to unleash the beast that is the most daring attempt at trans-media ever made by a major studio.

Now that the core viewership has been identified, Marvel can build the show with in-series limited events. In this case, the event being something billed as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Uprising. Similar to the way comic books operate on limited-event crossovers to create the idea of a full blown world, now that its characters have been solidified, Marvel Studios can have some fun with its pet project. Based on the tease at the end, it would seem the grand plan is to tie Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. into the events of the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier. How deeply those ties go is currently unknown, but since one of the big deals is the inclusion of Thor: The Dark World‘s Jaimie Alexander as her character Lady Sif in an episode, perhaps things are about to take off the way people have hoped the series would.

The idea that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could have pulled this off from the beginning is a fantasy. Had the series come out of the gate with nothing but major universe tie-ins, the series would have tanked before episode two because it would have said to the viewing public “we’re only going for hardcore fans of the MCU right now.” Playing to hardcore fans is fun, but rarely does it yield financial benefit. Every film leading up to the The Avengers never grossed much more than $600 million worldwide. Good numbers, but not the record shatters numbers of The Avengers. Marvel’s nothing if not the king of the waiting game. They knew world-building comes first and games come second.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needed its moment to breathe. Its moment to world-build. Without it, the show would have been left out in the cold. But now that it’s had that moment to find itself, the fun can begin. What audiences need to learn from this series is the things you want will come, just not right away. Marvel knew this season of S.H.I.E.L.D. was going to end here, and they knew the longer they waited, the bigger the reception was going to be.

I really think they're learning their lessons and listening to fans. All the stuff people have been complaining about has slowly been disappearing and all the stuff they say they want is starting to come in. Make Skye less annoying? Done. More comic characters? Done. More characters/connections from the movies? You got it.
Also this has nothing to do with anything, but this is my 100th submitted post to ONTD! :D

Cee Lo Green Sings in New Teaser Trailer for 'The Boxtrolls'

Focus Features has debuted a third teaser trailer for their stop-motion feature The Boxtrolls. The film arrives from LAIKA, the studio that brought us Caroline and ParaNorman, and the video features the song "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" performed by Cee Lo Green.

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed.

In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Elle Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

New Barbie designed with the proportions of an average American teenager

Over the last half-century, Barbie's cultural influence has almost been as exaggerated as her proportions. In the '90s, the average little girl in the United States owned at least one, likely spending hours tugging new outfits over Barbie's cartoonish, breast-like mounds and stuffing her stiff limbs into any household object that sort of resembled a convertible. But Barbie's plasticine shine is on the fade. And while she's fighting the PR war for her life, a new doll aims to put realistic, more malleable body images in the hands of little girls instead.

The Only Reality Show Where the Blonde Haired, Blue Eyed Girl Gets No Love: "Are You The One" Recap

Last week's episode of Are You the One? ended with the shocking, and heartbreaking for some, revelation that Chris T. and Paige were a perfect match. This meant that Chris T.'s ongoing romance with Shanley would be quickly broken up.

Immediately after the "Perfect Match" banner appeared in the truth booth, the explosive house fights began. And we were finally treated to the "to be continued ..." drama from last week! It started, of course, with Shanley and Simone.

The two have had tiffs since the beginning. Shanley and Chris T. weren't a match, so Simone was (rightfully) angry that they continued to spend all of their time together instead of with other people, which included their own possible perfect matches. She concocted the plan to put Chris T. and Paige in the truth booth and settle the mystery once and for all. Sneaky move, girl. And thankfully it played out.

BBC Three, home of Being Human, Bad Education and Gavin and Stacey, has been axed.

The closure of BBC3 is to be proposed by the broadcaster's director general, the Guardian understands, bringing the curtain down on the youth-oriented TV channel after 11 years.

Tony Hall is expected to announce later this month that he is axing the channel – which first aired programmes ranging from Gavin and Stacey to Hotter Than My Daughter – as part of a plan to save £100m a year.

His decision also signals a reprieve for its sister channel, the arts and culture specialist BBC4, which has faced calls for it to be axed and merged into BBC2 – although it is not clear if the channels will subsequently be renumbered.

However, Hall's plans still have to be approved by the BBC Trust, which four years ago overturned former director general Mark Thompson's plan to shut BBC Radio 6 Music following a concerted protest from listeners.

Katy Perry breaks Pop Songs Chart record previously held by Mariah Carey

As 'Dark Horse' reigns for a fourth week, Perry rewrites the mark for the most total weeks (46) at No. 1 in the airplay chart's archives

Katy Perry claims the record for the most weeks at No. 1 in the 21-year history of Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart all to herself, as "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, spends a fourth week on top, upping her career count to 46 weeks at No. 1. With her latest frame in the lead, Perry passes Mariah Carey, who's totaled 45 weeks at No. 1.

Perry has earned her record-breaking feat courtesy of 11 Pop Songs No. 1s, also a chart best-sum, which she shares with Rihanna. (Notably, the careers of artists like Carey and Boyz II Men pre-date the Pop Songs chart's inception.) Of Perry's 11 leaders, "Horse" is the eighth to rule for at least four weeks. She set a personal best when "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, dominated for seven weeks in 2010.

Lupita dating Michael Fassbender?

Lupita Nyong’o and her 12 Years a Slave co-star Michael Fassbender are reportedly romantically interested in each other.

The pair star together in historical drama 12 Years a Slave, and Lupita won the Best Supporting Actress trophy at the Academy Awards last Sunday for her work in the film.

Michael was physically demonstrative with Lupita throughout the ceremony, and sources claim the co-stars were once lovers.

“They have an incredible connection after the whirlwind of filming 12 Years A Slave and then promoting it together,” a source told British newspaper The Sun.

“In September during the Toronto Film Festival they had a brief romance.”

The outlet also reports he decided to bring his mother to the Academy Awards, so that Lupita is clear she is the only woman he wants in his life romantically.

“Now Michael is intent on showing how he wants to get serious again and made a point of bringing his mum Adele to the Oscars rather than a date,” the insider explained.

“Lupita’s the most in-demand woman in the world at the moment so it will be hard to make it work but their chemistry is undeniable.”

Lupita has been linked to other Hollywood hunks of late, including fellow Oscar-winner Jared Leto. But both stars have denied they are dating each other, despite reports to the contrary.

The Man Behind Freddy's Ribs on 'House of Cards' Talks Plot Twist

The first thing you need to know about the man that has brought the lovable Freddy Hayes to life on “House of Cards” is that he’s never ever tasted one of Freddy’s delicious-looking ribs.

The second thing is why. The first scene filmed for Netflix’s political thriller’s first season was shot at Frank Underwood’s (Kevin Spacey) favorite joint, a neighborhood rib shack that opens just for him at his beck and call.

“It was our first day and they covered me in barbecue sauce,” actor Reg E. Cathey told TODAY. “It was hot; it was like 90 degrees. It was very uncomfortable and it was that smell. I just couldn’t stand the smell. That’s why I didn’t want to eat any because I was covered in it. And then it just became a joke—Freddy doesn’t eat his own ribs! So I just kept it going and I never ate one rib.”

If watching Frank thoroughly enjoying Freddy’s ribs makes you hungry, that’s understandable. But Freddy’s Ribs is purely fictional; it’s not a stand-in for an existing Baltimore barbecue restaurant. The location used for filming is just an empty storefront. The interiors are filmed in a studio.

ROYAL WEDDING ALERT: Kimye will walk down the aisle on May 24 in Paris

Kim Kardashian is wasting no time becoming Mrs West.
The 33-year-old reality star has already set a date to wed Kanye, 36, in Paris. The two will walk down the aisle on May 24, according to UsWeekly.

That will be only seven months after the Yeezus singer got down on one knee to propose to the E! favorite in San Francisco with a 15-carat diamond engagement ring.

May 24 is a Saturday but guests will be flown in several days before that, according to the magazine.
The date is an interesting choice because it's when astronomers are predicting a comet will burst through Earth's atmosphere and create a brilliant meteor shower, lighting up the sky.

France is no unfamiliar destination for the couple. They have already been spending much time there in the past year - Kanye was in the City Of Lights as recently as Sunday when he took in the Givenchy show where his soon-to-be sister-in-law Kendall Jenner walked the runway.

On February 25 Kim told Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM radio show her wedding won't be the giant affair that has been reported.
'We're having a super, super small, intimate wedding,' she told the Keeping Up With the Kardashians producer.
'As we go along, we're realizing we want it to be smaller and more intimate than people are imagining and thinking.'

Q&A with Gwendoline Christie, one of Game of Thrones' most complex warriors

Gwendoline Christie is as animated as her Game of Thrones warrior Brienne of Tarth is austere.

The 6-foot-3 British actress is quick to laugh in an interview, but on screen she cuts an intimidating and imposing figure as the tall female knight in the HBO fantasy series. Christie and the rest of the cast return for a fourth season of Thrones April 6, though a Season 3 Blu-ray and DVD is out now for those who need to catch up.

The third year found Brienne in the service of Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), and she is tasked with returning Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to Kings Landing — though along the way Lannister doesn't prove as handy as he should as a master swordsman.

And the new season? It's not only structurally very different from the other three, Christie says, but also "I think it's going to blow people's minds."

The Vamps' James McVey Thanks Taylor Swift After LA Visit

It wasn't enough that British boy band The Vamps were wining and dining with country-pop sensation Taylor Swift at her house recently, but it seems that the boys have paid another visit during their time in LA.
Lead guitarist James, 19 expressed his excitment of meeting the 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' singer again by posting a photo of the songstress and her cat Meredith on Twitter.
The 'Can We Dance' hitmakers have been spending a lot of time in the US this month as they attempt to launch their career on the other side of the pond and it seems their pal Taylor has been making them feel right at home.
After lunching at The Ivy with Taylor recently, James told Splash News: “It was lovely, it was very good food, she's a very good cook,” while Tristan added: “She's a lovely person it was awesome to hang out with her.”
The boy band recently opened for Taylor Swift during her sold-out stint at the O2 Arena in London and are supporting The Wanted later this month before embarking on their first headlining tour later on this year.

first clip from 'all is by my side'

John Ridley's Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side stars André 3000, and as MTV reports, the first footage from the film has finally surfaced online. a scene between Hendrix (Andrè) and model/muse Linda Keith (Imogen Poots).

The film won't feature any of Hendrix's original songs—the late rock'n'roll icon's estate objected to the film and refused to grant rights to his music. Instead, the film features scenes where Hendrix covers songs by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, and Elmore James.

All Is By My Side will screen at SXSW.

One Direction's Harry Styles eyes Fiyero Role in "Wicked" Movie

We always knew he was a little Wicked (and would look amazing in tight white pants). Now Harry Styles could be dancing through life in the big-screen adaptation of Broadway blockbuster Wicked, according to The Sun. (Lol okay...)

"He's top of the Wicked team's wish list to play the romantic lead role of Fiyero,” a source told The Sun. "Moviemakers see him as a new Zac Efron and think he would be a perfect casting for a movie musical.”

Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry is rumored to be helming the movie version of the tuner. It remains to be seen who will play the leading role of Elphaba in the flick, though Lea Michele is under consideration.

People tells us what went wrong between Katy and John

You love whom you love – unless fundamental differences make the relationship just too complicated to maintain.

At least that's the reason being given behind John Mayer and Katy Perry's split, according to a source close to Mayer.

"They're two very strong-willed people," the source tells PEOPLE. "Despite caring about each other very much and wanting to make it work, they are, at their core, quite different."

Among those differences, says one industry insider, is their age gap. At 29, Perry is still very much eager to go out and have a good time partying, and the insider says it could get to be too much for Mayer, 36.

Houston Clan Puts The Smackdown on Bobbi Kristina's Half-Brother/Husband at Family Party

Whitney Houston's son-in-law got his ass beaten by one of Whitney's nephews at a formal family gathering ... and it's all because of a long-simmering family feud ... TMZ has learned.

We're told Whitney's nephew, Gary Michael Houston, went nuclear on Bobbi Kristina's husband, Nick Gordon … allegedly SLAMMING him to the floor and pummeling his face -- accusing him of talking crap about the family.

Family sources tell us ... it all went down at a Sweet 16 party for Whitney's niece, Rayah. We're told it was a formal affair -- everyone in tuxes and long gowns -- but Nick showed up in a hoodie and knit cap and "lookin' like a thug."

Gary felt Gordon had insulted the family one too many times ... as soon as the party was over, he delivered the beat down. We're told it was a lopsided fight -- Nick didn't even get in a single punch.

The two are now sluggin' it out on Twitter. Gordon posted, "F*** all of em they've tried to fight me (Gary H) jealous ass n***a."

In response, Gary tweeted, "He still kind a sore from that last trip I sent him on smh .... I tried to tell him to buckle up lol."

Stunt Queen Supreme aka Tamar Braxton Snaps on Instagram at Stylist THAT SHE DIDN'T PAY

Singing K. Michelle’s “Where they do that at…” Chile, the streets are talking. Word on the curb is Tamar & Vince have developed a pretty solid reputation for NOT paying folks. So much so, that Tamar’s stylist asked her for a contract in an effort to keep the business clean, and Tamar got all in her feelings and blasted the stylist on Instagram:

Apple seemingly turns to Tumblr to promote the iPhone 5c

Apple appears to have taken to Tumblr to start up a new advertising campaign for the iPhone 5c. The campaign is called “Every color has a story,” and the webpage called “ISee5c” appeared within the past couple of days.

The advertisements are videos portraying different iPhone 5c phone colors and case colors. Each roughly 15 second video plays a different song and showcases the dots featured on the rear of the iPhone 5c official cases and on the iOS 7 dynamic wallpapers…

Each ad ends with a statement. For instance, the green iPhone 5c video proclaims “Viva o Carnaval” at the end. That particular video plays fun, carnival-themed Brazilian music. The red/pink iPhone 5c video declares “Porte de Lilas” (the gates of Paris), and it plays French music with the words ‘little dots’.

Lupita Nyong’o on racism in beauty: 'Every day I woke up hoping my skin was a little bit lighter'

With all the post-awards interviews, that selfie and those endless headlines rolling out after the Oscars, there are a few Hollywood moments you’d be forgiven for overlooking.

There are also a few that deserve to be brought back to the surface (scroll down to watch the video).

Like this speech on racism and the western perceptions of beauty, made by Best Supporting Actress Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, who felt so underrepresented by the entertainment industry as a young girl of Kenyan descent growing up in Mexico City that she wished she “would wake up lighter skinned”.

Speaking as she accepted her award for Best Breakthrough Performance at the annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon – hosted by Essence magazine – she said: “I too remember a time when I would turn on the TV and only see pale skin. I got teased and taunted about my night shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter skinned.

“The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself before I was in front of a mirror, because I wanted to see my fair face first. And every day I experienced just the same disappointment at being just as dark as I had been the day before.

“I tried to negotiate with God. I told him I would stop steeling sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted. I would listen to my mother’s every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But, I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because I never woke up lighter.”

But, thanks to one particularly prominent black model, she received the validation she needed.

A post about the merits of serialized television (True Detective, AHS, etc.)

Will Serial TV Shows Be The Best “Movies” of the Next Few Years?

There were two McConaugheys broadcast on Sunday night. One was the McConaughey honored for his portrayal of a real-life AIDS victim turned treatment advocate, for which he shed fifty pounds and (symbolically) years of critical bad will. It was a comeback story as predictable as any Hollywood ending. The other, far more interesting and less predictable McConaughey was tucked into the premium world of HBO in the form of True Detective’s Rust Cohle, where each week he delivers free-form philosophical jargon at just above a whisper and performs oh-so-calculated-yet-mesmerizing actorly business with only the end of a cigarette and a six pack of beer.

The hive mind has credited True Detective for making an invisible supporting push toward McConaughey’s win in the form of a “reverse Norbit effect,” legitimizing him as a strong performer outside the clichéd obviousness of a recognition like this. But as critical and fan communities show a much stronger collective love for True Detective than they did for the supposed apex of McConaughey’s well-heeled comeback, I’m not convinced that True Detective and work like it is simply another gear in the machine of an industry’s collective good will for a once-dismissed actor.

Even with a forecast of movies that promise inventiveness and risk, serial television looks to dominate the efforts and imagination of filmmakers for the near future.

There’s been plenty written about this supposed golden age of television (even, regrettably, by myself). Although we hesitate to admit so in a hyperbolic, Netflix-binge-enabling TV culture that sees Breaking Bad’s lionized status as an opinion-of-fact, quality television has been growing tiresome.
Collapse )
I don't think serialized TV will ever be present at the Oscars, but a show like True Detective definitely feels like a very long film rather than a TV series (which has everything to do with the creative forces behind the show). Oh, we now have a True Detective tag for your tracking needs. :)

Broadchurch & My Mad Fat Diary lead RTS Programme Awards nominations

ITV's murder mystery drama Broadchurch is leading the field in the Royal Television Society Programme Awards nominations with a quartet of nods.

Broadchurch star Olivia Colman was nominated for best actress, alongside her fellow Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker, and Sharon Rooney, for E4's My Mad Fat Teenage Diary in her first major TV role.

My Mad Fat Teenage Diary is also up for the best drama series prize, against Channel 4's Utopia and BBC2's Peaky Blinders, but there is nothing in either category for BBC2's Gillian Anderson thriller, The Fall.

MTV is running out of ideas

MTV's First Reality Food Show Is 'Top Chef' Meets 'Real World'

We're surprised MTV waited until now to jump on the cooking bandwagon for reality TV. The network is premiering its first food-themed reality show, House of Food, on March 31.

Think food competition shows like Top Chef and MasterChef in a Real World setting. And get this: it all takes place in L.A.

It's everything you could expect from a show created from the reality TV-centric channel, including the dramatic voiceover tagline in the show's trailer: "Eight untrained cooks will live together, learn together, and compete to win their dream job."

These home cooks will be crashing with each other in a sweet L.A. pad and get trained by three L.A. chefs: The Tasting Kitchen's Casey Lane, Waterloo & City's Brendan Collins, and Hudson's House's Brooke Williamson, according to The Wrap.

The trailer, which the Hollywood Reporter first reported, promises lots of drama—including heated screaming from chefs (just like Gordon Ramsay!), pots being slammed, and chairs being pushed over.

And what does the winner get? An apprenticeship with a to-be-announced L.A. chef. That's it.

Check out the trailer below at the source

But Lily Allen chose a more down-to-earth mode of transport as she headed to the Beyoncé gig at London's O2 Arena - choosing to travel by tube to the venue.

Lily posted a series of pictures on her Instagram page of herself on the train, clearly thoroughly enjoying the novelty of travelling via public transport.

This is a House of Cards round up post

Tweet with Robyn Wright and Kevin Spacey
The House of Cards official Twitter account tweeted this earlier today:

House of Cards President Michel Gill Talks the Evil of Frank Underwood

It's not easy going up against Frank Underwood.

As the newly minted Vice President on Netflix's House of Cards, Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey) is the worst kind of political shark – he has to keep moving upward, or else he dies. In the second season, Underwood's main target is his own commander in chief, Garrett Walker, played by Broadway veteran Michel Gill. A mild-mannered pushover, Walker spends the season caught in the middle of a political war between Underwood and his longtime mentor, energy titan Raymond Tusk ...
