Academy Voters Are Ignorant About Animation

Those of us in animation always gripe that the rest of Hollywood doesn’t care or know the first thing about animated films. There are tons of anecdotal stories to support this position, but finally, we’ve got some definitive proof. And if you think Hollywood doesn’t understand animation, it’s even worse than you could imagine.

The Hollywood Reporter recently published interviews with seven anonymous Academy members about how they voted for this year’s nominees. Four of the seven Academy members abstained from voting for best animated feature. The three that did vote all chose Frozen. Here is what each of them said:

Kid Nation- Where Are They Now?

For those of you who don't know, Kid Nation was a short-lived reality show that aired on CBS in the fall of 2007. The show focused on 40 kids who lived in a fake, Old-West town/movie set in the middle of the desert and how they worked on building a functioning society without any adult intervention. It unfortunately lasted only one season before being cancelled, likely over the controversy surrounding throwing 40 kids in a desert and having them allocate money to each other and telling them to have at it. However, in its one glorious season, Kid Nation brought us some truly great little characters and, now that they're all grown up, let's see where they are now.

News of Coldplay’s new album release comes a week after the outfit dropped the atmospheric track “Midnight" -- and its trippy clip.

Ashanti returns with "Braveheart," mixing pop, R&B, and the club. Is it a formula that still works for the Murder Inc. chanteuse?

[Review (3 out out 5)]By 2004, established female R&B artists were suffering. Mya, Brandy, Ashanti, and even Janet Jackson weren’t breaking any records with sales or radio play. There was a shift. Female R&B artists were expected to be voracious vocalists with ranges that would give those listening goose bumps. That shift was Beyoncé. No matter the differentiations and nuances among the pool of singers, after her 2003 solo debut, the paradigm shifted. The successes were the exception. Alicia Keys was a virtuoso; a singer-songwriter with the ability to play an instrument. Later that year, Keyshia Cole would be the newbie on the block with a voice that was rough as it was melismatic. The angelic vocal thinness that was predominant in contemporary R&B for the decade before had waned.

On Ashanti’s latest album, Braveheart, the album title is a direct reference to Mel Gibson’s 1995 film by the same name. In it, the Scottish fight against the English, outnumbered and outmaneuvered. Ashanti likens herself to the Scottish declaring, “A lot of people counted me out and that feeds my hunger and ignites my passion...” This is her way of declaring a comeback. It’s been six years since Ashanti’s fourth album, The Declaration, 12 years since her debut, and 11 years since her last Top 10 hit. There’s really no other way to listen to Braveheart.

“Bangers” were never Ashanti’s thing (2004’s “Only U” being an exception and the one in Braveheart we’ll get to later) and that’s where her missteps arise on the new production, only because it’s questionable whether they play into her strengths. Producer Detail, throws his hat into the ring with “Count” where Ashanti’s distorted vocals linger with, “Baby, don’t make me count your money.” In a land where songs make babies, Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” and “Pour It Up” met at the strip club to conceive inebriated. It terms of style, it’s the odd-man-out in the album along with the Rick Ross trap-inspired collaboration “I Got It.” Both don’t illicit jaw drops, and that’s what tracks like that aim to do. The main vocal duet, for example, comes in the form of “Love Game” with Jeremih. The production on the track is rich and the chemistry palpable, but not striking.

Not all collaborations fell flat. There’s a gem on the album, of the radio-hit variety, produced by DJ Clue. The bass-heavy slow-groove “Early In The Morning” features a singing French Montana, and it’s, hands-down, the best track on the album. More than just an ode to morning sex, Ashanti’s low register weaves into the subtly arranged verses and hits the mark capturing mood and effortlessness, “Early in the morning, I’mma have you moanin’.” “First Real Love” with Beenie Man is triumphant as it is hopeful and geared to get some club traction. Ashanti’s voice works well with the reggae production and Beenie Man’s, “Zagga zagga zagga zaaah.”

Traces of Ashanti’s debut linger with tracks that are sweet and demure. “Nowhere,” “Don’t Tell Me No,” and “Never Should Have” all contain a fully contagious melody coupled with songwriting centered on vulnerability and regret–it’s good R&B. In theme and vocal arrangement, Ashanti conjures memories of Mary J. Blige during her My Life era, when she sings, “I try to make it work but I just end up hurt” on “Runaway.”

Needless to say the female R&B paradigm continues to evolve. Even the game changers (again, Beyoncé comes to mind) have had to make adjustments in regards to their creative output. There’s a needed “wow factor” with every move made coupled with material that’ll elicit some emotional connection, the way Jhené Aiko’s latest Sail Out EP has done. “Braveheart” has a few of those moments that demonstrate sonic evolution and connectedness. Though it is concise and cohesive, more than any of Ashanti’s albums, it’s still marred with glimpses of wanted grandiosity at the expense of artistic revelation. Brave would have been sacrificing that wanted grandiosity.

Apple unveils integrated car service CarPlay

Back in June at its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced that it was developing a new platform called iOS in the Car. The company promised to bring a car-customized version of its popular mobile operating system — including a tailored version of the Siri personal assistant — to vehicles from a huge array of leading automotive manufacturers.

Today, iOS in the Car arrived, albeit with a name change: Apple CarPlay, which rolls out first on cars from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo at this week's Geneva Motor Show. It will work with the iPhone 5, 5S, or 5C.

CarPlay mirrors your iPhone's screen in a driver-friendly format, filling your center-console touchscreen with large buttons for key functions like maps, music, text messaging, and phone calls. Alternatively, drivers can press a voice control button on the steering wheel to call up Siri for an eyes-free control experience.

Apple's platform has also been designed to work with various manufacturers' physical controls, so you can navigate through the CarPlay interface with knobs, dials, and buttons. In Apple's words, "If it controls your screen, it controls CarPlay."

Along with native Apple apps like iTunes and Maps, CarPlay will work with a variety of third-party apps, primarily audio-focused. Options at launch will include Spotify, Beats Radio, iHeartRadio, and Stitcher. Apple promises more compatible apps are coming soon.

If there's one big down-side to CarPlay, it's that it is a phone-mirroring setup: It will only work if you own an iPhone. That means the 55% of U.S. smartphone owners who use Android or Windows Phone will be left out in the cold—a fact Apple is surely hoping will drive iPhone sales even higher.

Though only three manufacturers are debuting CarPlay this month, Apple's list of "committed partners" is all-encompassing, with only Chrysler, Volkswagen, and Audi as notable absences.

"Oh, sorry Jimmy," Ford said after waving to the audience. Ford will be an official guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday evening.

Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson earning most money

Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson earn more money than their One Direction bandmates.

The 'Story of My Life' quintet are estimated to be worth over £100 million altogether but as Liam and Louis write many of their songs - with writers typically earning nine per cent of each track's royalties - it's been suggested that they're making more money than their bandmates, and Liam has admitted they're working on even more material.

Liam said: ''Louis and I have a little partnership going on. We've been pretty keen to start writing straight away.''The 20-year-old star also revealed that he's focusing on writing music so that he can maintain a career in the music industry. He told The Sun newspaper: ''I've been in the studio already, it's been going really well. Rape, Lies and the Internet: The Story of Conor Oberst and His Accuser

Last week, Bright Eyes musician Conor Oberst filed a lawsuit for libel against a reported "anonymous commenter" who posted on various websites that he raped her. But Joanie Faircloth was not anonymous—she left the original comments under her name, and her commenter account was linked to her Facebook. Her broad social-media presence left quite a record, too, and now it will be used to discredit her. It turns out the Internet is not a vacuum, and what we say can have very real consequences.

On her now-deleted Tumblr account, Faircloth clarified that she had not made her allegations anonymously.

"[T]he term 'anonymous commenter' was being thrown around a lot, as if I was some troll just trying to get a rise out of people. I wanted people to know that is not the case and for them not to be able to use that as a reason to discount my experience or avoid putting any real thought into the situation."

Not being anonymous also made her legally accountable for her statements. Oberst is suing Faircloth, a 27-year-old North Carolina resident, for $1 million in damages to his "reputation, standing in the community, shame, mortification, hurt feelings, embarrassment, and humiliation."

"Mr. Oberst gave Ms. Faircloth ample opportunity to retract her allegations prior to filing this lawsuit," Oberst's attorney Martin Singer tells Jezebel. "It was only when those requests for a retraction went unanswered that [he] had no other choice but to file this lawsuit in order to clear his name."

But clearing his name might be a tall order considering that the burden of proof is entirely on Oberst. Not only must he prove that Faircloth's statements damaged his reputation, he also has to prove that he didn't rape her and that she lied about it because she intended to harm him. Proving malice could be tricky: Why would she want to hurt Oberst? And why would someone lie about being sexually assaulted? What could be gained from that? Nothing, really.

Oberst's complaint implies that a different set of questions can be raised—about Faircloth's credibility and the veracity of her claims—from her long trail of online activity. According to court documents, she has a history of "catfishing"—posing as a boy online, even passing herself off as a cancer patient. And while none of that has anything to do with rape allegations, Oberst's legal team is making use of these details in order to tear down both Faircloth and her side of the story.

Allure Exclusive: We Got the Scoop on Anne Hathaway's 2014 Oscar Makeup

At last year's Academy Awards, Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee changed Anne Hathaway's lipstick "three times in about five minutes" because of last-minute wardrobe decisions (you may have heard a little something about that). But amidst the lipstick and wardrobe chaos, Hathaway took home the award for best supporting actress. This year, needless to say, was a little less frenzied (for both ladies). "Her stylist sent me a picture of the dress a few days before, so I had an idea of what we were doing," says Lee. "The vibe was very relaxed, because she had to just show up and give someone else an award." We spoke with Lee to get all the details on Hathaway's gorgeous makeup look, but especially how to get those killer brows.

Skin. Lee prepped Hathaway's skin with Chanel Hydra Beauty Sérum and Creme. "It's like a drink of water," Lee says. She let both sink in while Hathaway had her hair done, before applying Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet in Beige Rose 22 (out this month). "For years everyone has been into dewy skin, but I'm leaning more toward a velvety finish," says Lee. "Using something with a little more powder in it means you don't have to apply even more powder, and it diffuses the light beautifully."

Brows. Is it wrong that we'd rather have Hathaway's eyebrows than a ticket to next year's Oscars (or maybe even an Oscar)? "I am fastidious with eyebrows, and actually, they're a little thinner than I like them to be," says Lee. She used an espresso-brown eyebrow pencil to fill in any gaps, brushed them into shape with a small brow brush, and then set them with Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel. "I knew that her hair was going to be styled back, so this was their moment to shine."

After attending some Super Bowl parties and joking around with the Orlando Magic mascot at a game – the giant dragon proposed to Kate! – the couple have been seen at the Detroit Tigers spring training and at a very silly Tigers dinner party.

FanSided writes that the Tigers are in Florida for spring training and Kate, 21, has come along to support Justin, 30, the Tigers’ pitcher, as he recovers from core muscle surgery. Fans tweeted that Kate and Justin have been seen out riding bikes together – how adorable!

Yahoo! Sports writes that Kate also joined the Tigers for a very silly dinner party, during which Tigers catcher Bryan Holady put on a women’s one-piece swimsuit and a tiny sombrero and Kate taught him how to pose like a bikini model (though, unlike Kate’s latest Sports Illustrated shoot, Bryan had gravity on his side!).

Tigers pitcher Joba Chamberlain took a photo of Bryan posing with Kate – fully clothed – and posted it to Twitter, captioned, “Too many bikini models in 1 room #nofilter @KateUpton @jbholaday @Max_Scherzer @JustinVerlander.”

Kate re-tweeted the photo, adding, “@SI_Swimsuit cover?” Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer also re-tweeted the photo and added, “Lets address this pic. 1st off it was taco night, sombreros enhance the experience. Holly told a story and said ‘I've got it out in the car.’”

The new couple seems to be very happy – Justin recently talked about their relationship for the first time in an ESPN interview. ESPN baseball analyst Karl Ravech told Verlander, “I lose credibility if I don’t ask you about Kate Upton, because I told [ESPN's] Tim [Kurkijian] I would, because he’s curious, so what’s the latest there?”

Verlander avoided kissing and telling but revealed things are going well, saying, "I've always been pretty private about my private life. ... It is hard to be private, especially with her, but, you know, I'm in a great spot and just looking to get ready for the season."

Seth MacFarlane, Family Guy and American Dad creator, becomes a novelist

You would think that Seth MacFarlane, creator of the hit animated TV show "Family Guy," has collected enough artistic titles at this point. He is an animator, screenwriter, actor, composer, director, producer and Grammy-nominated singer. Now he is adding another lofty label to his expanding resume: novelist.

His latest project, a comic western titled "A Million Ways to Die in the West," is being published next week by Ballantine Books, nearly three months before the premiere of a film of the same name. Mr. MacFarlane also co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in the movie.

Ex-NFL Star Darren Sharper Feared To Be A Serial Rapist: 9 Women 5 States

According to CNN, 38-year-old former NFL safety Darren Sharper is being called a potential serial rapists after 9 women in 5 states have come forward and named him as their attacker. Sharper surrendered to L.A. police late last week over allegations by 2 women.

The next day Sharper was also without a job as well. The NFL Network fired him almost as soon as he surrendered. Sharper had worked as an analyst for them upon leaving the NFL. However, he was suspended indefinitely without pay following an arrest for drug possession in January of this year.

ONTD Original: Is it written in the stars? An Oscar winner and a Loser.

Jared won and Jen lost! What do the stars see in common between these Acamdemy Award Winners?

So, the main reason I chose Jared & Jen out of the other contenders was because they share complex aspect patterns which was a huge factor. Jared, particularly, has an INSANE chart with more to cover than ONTD would ever read; and for the record, Queen Lupita was my main choice, but her complete chart is not available, and since she's going to be incredibly famous, I'm gonna wait it out and see if her time of birth surfaces.

If you're interested, I'll talk about it in the comments. Start praying that a talk show host asks Lupita what time she was born.

Tasteless Tweets from Chelsea Handler

During last night’s Oscars, The Huffington Post handed over their Twitter account to Chelsea Handler. Which is only slightly safer than handing a baby your car keys and sending it on cross-country road trip. While I would’ve predicted this would end badly, I never would’ve guessed this badly. But that’s only because her incredibly well-written piece on being a woman on late night television last week distracted me. Silly me for forgetting that her usual schtick involves incredibly offensive jokes that fail to make me laugh.

TM2's Kailyn Insists Her Memoir Will Be Nothing Like Farrah's

Post Hill Press and MTV announced today that Post Hill Press will release the anticipated tell-all memoir of Kailyn Lowry of the hit docu-series "Teen Mom 2," "Pride Over Pity," (Post Hill Press, Hardcover, $19.99, eBook, $9.99) in April 2014 wherever books are sold. "Teen Mom 2," currently on-air and in its fifth season, airs Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

In a moving effort to finally put the past behind her, Kailyn, the feisty, unapologetic, tattooed beauty whose determination to raise her son on her own terms has been documented on MTV's groundbreaking docu-series "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom 2," gives readers a raw and brutally honest account of her troubled, often painful story and, for the first time, reveals the dark secrets she has so closely guarded.

"If I ever gaze at the past, I shudder. I shudder to count how many times I mistakenly thought I was loved. I quiver unpleasantly to recall the person I used to be and how I acted in some of my relationships. Looking back, it's not surprising that I turned to boys for love so early. I needed appreciation. I needed to feel worthy. Most of all I needed support." -- Excerpt from "Pride Over Pity"

Guided by the single principle of helping other young girls like her, Kailyn takes the reader behind the scenes, writing candidly about her desperate stay at a homeless shelter to qualify for a program that would provide a safe home for her son, breaking her silence on the question of her sexuality, and sharing the traumatic sexual experiences that have left her deeply scarred.

Now a happily married mother-of-two, Kailyn revealed in February that topics include addiction, rape, being abandoned by her dad and “tons of things in between.” The memoir also promises to be completely different from Farrah Abraham’s My Teenage Dream Ended.

“It’ll be NOTHING like Farrah’s as far as editing goes,” Kailyn said on Facebook. “We’ve put a lot of work into this over the last couple of years and I think you all will be very surprised by it.”

Oscar winner Jared Leto goes to Ellen

He was the coolest guy at Sunday night's Academy Awards, standing out from the fashion pack in his white Saint Laurent tuxedo jacket and red bow tie.

But come Monday morning, Best Supporting Actor winner Jared Leto was rocking a slightly more safe, dowdy look.

The 42-year-old was seen leaving his home in Los Angeles ahead of an interview with Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres on her popular talkshow in nearby Burbank, wearing what at first glance appeared to be a pair of embroidered slippers.

Great Britain's Eurovision Entry Revealed

Little-known singer-songwriter Molly Smitten-Downes is to represent the UK at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

The 26-year-old will carry British hopes in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May with her song Children of the Universe.

The pop singer has already had a taste of the limelight after having a UK top 10 hit in 2008 with Sash on the song Raindrops (Encore Une Fois).

Her selection comes after Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck struggled for the UK in the past two contests.

Tyler came 19th out of 26 countries in 2013, while Humperdinck finished 25th the previous year.

A BBC statement described Children of the Universe as "an anthemic, uplifting track specifically written with live performance in mind".

Smitten-Downes, from Leicestershire, enjoyed a brief appearance in the charts five-and-a-half years ago when she sang on an updated version of German DJ Sash's 1997 smash Encore Une Fois.

The 2008 version reached number nine in the UK.

Smitten-Downes followed that by lending her vocals to the track I Will Learn to Love Again from Swedish producer Basshunter's 2009 album Bass Generation, which reached number 16 in the UK.

After submitting her tracks to BBC Introducing, she gained support from BBC local radio in the East Midlands before being spotted by the corporation's Eurovision producers.

"BBC Introducing provided us with an extraordinary range of talent to explore and in Molly we found the perfect combination of contemporary songwriting and real vocal quality," said BBC executive producer Guy Freeman.

"Her enthusiasm for the project is infectious and I'm sure that she'll gain huge support on the journey to Copenhagen."

The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in the Danish capital on 10 May.

The Issue With Mattew McConaughey's Speech... The AIDS Omission

Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar on Sunday (2 March) for playing a man with AIDS in a movie all about AIDS. But the actor is being criticized today for not once uttering the word AIDS during a lengthy acceptance speech that lasted more than three minutes.

What made the omission all the more glaring was that during an earlier acceptance speech, McConaughey's co-star Jared Leto had spoken of‘the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and those of you out there who have ever felt injustice for who you are and who you love, tonight I stand here with you and for you.'

McConaughey was also not taking note when supporting actress winner Lupita Nyong'o said in her speech: 'It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s.'

So in the end, the reviews for McConaughey's speech were not as good as they were for his acting - particularly a tangent about how his hero is himself - or rather himself in 10 years.

Wrote Salon: The star had just won an award for playing an AIDS patient who fights for a cure and eventually dies, and he mentioned AIDS not once, though he described how his present-day self was the role model for his past self. The people whose real-life lives and deaths McConaughey plumbs for art are less important, here, than McConaughey himself.

Time called it 'confounding' and a 'semi-bizarre tale about his inner life' while while Vogue wrote that 'Magic Matt was as upbeat as a man would have to be when his self-absorption isn’t just actorly but cosmic.'

McConaughey did remember to thank God right at the start and he also paid moving tribute to his late father saying: 'I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin."' While AIDS was never mentioned, McConaughey was sure to wrap things up with his signature line: 'All right all right all right.'

MTV’s ‘The Challenge’ Star Paula Meronek Announces She’s Pregnant!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

She’s already put up with plenty of crying, whining and childish behavior during her days on MTV’s The Challenge, so Paula Meronek should have no problem dealing with her next big ‘challenge’: parenthood.

Paula, who has basically starred on every single ‘Challenge’ since the show began, announced today that she is expecting a baby with her fiance Jack Berkert. (The couple became engaged over Christmas last year.)

She posted a sonogram photo of the baby boy to her Instagram account, along with a note to her fans.

“Ok everyone…just wanted to officially announce that @jackbeckert and I are expecting the arrival of this lil guy in the beginning of July…yes that is correct!!! #imgonnabeamama #itsaboy #ourlittlepeanut #soproud #soblessed

Paula’s pregnancy may mean the end of her ‘Challenge’ days. She’s participated in 10 seasons, and snagged her second career win on the the most reason season, “Rivals II.”

Seriously, can ‘The Challenge’ survive without its trademark Paula drama?! The next season will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay and Paula is not on the rumored cast list that The Ashley posted back in October. However, one of these girls will surely be stepping up to take Paula’s place as the ‘Challenge’ drama queen!

Congrats to Paula!

Where HAS Kim Novak been? In Oregon, apparently

Even with all the big names in attendance at Sunday's 2014 Oscars, it was the appearance of Golden Age movie star Kim Novak that prompted one of the bigger waves of social media interest.

Novak, remembered as the star of Alfred Hitchcock's classic, "Vertigo," commented that she was "happy to be back". But where had she been? Turns out, she decided to step away from Hollywood decades ago, and settle instead in Southern Oregon.

Novak, 81, seemed a bit overwhelmed to be back in the public eye at the Oscar ceremony, and her co-presenter, Matthew McConaughey, was solicitous of her. Much of the social media chat was unkind, commenting on Novak's appearance.

In 2010, Novak gave an interview with The Oregonian, where she reflected on her decision to settle in the state.

"My roots, as far as Oregon goes, go way back," she says, in that familiar, low voice. "My father's whole family, the Novaks, settled in Scappoose. I remember my father telling me stories about crossing the rivers there and being able to walk across the backs of the salmon. They came from Czechoslovakia, the old country, and were settlers here. They had a place of cabins where people could stay, and a little dance hall, and a candy store. My grandfather was a logger."

After first living in eastern Oregon, Novak bought a place on the Rogue River in the late 1990s.

"We love it here," she says. "It's very important for us to be on the water. I loved living on the ocean before, and now we're on the Rogue, we've got two islands, and wonderful places for the horses."

Matthew McConaughey on 'True Detective,' His Pal Woody, McConaissance

By Jonathan Ringen
March 3, 2014 1:03 PM ET

Last night, for the first time in several months, Matthew McConaughey wasn't at home watching his favorite show on TV: HBO's True Detective, in which he stars as the brilliant but deeply troubled homicide cop Rustin "Rust" Cohle. "I'm doing what the public's doing," he says. "I received all eight episodes, but I said, 'You know what? I'm gonna check them out each Sunday night and then sit on each episode for a week.' I've found myself going back and watching each one of them about three times during the week and fucking really enjoying it."

He had a pretty good reason for missing the seventh episode: McConaughey was at the Academy Awards, where he got called "dirty-pretty" by Ellen DeGeneres, flirted with Kim Novak as they presented the animated movie awards and, ultimately, scored the Best Actor statue himself for Dallas Buyers Club. Congratulations! McConaughey has confirmed he won't return to the show for Season Two, but gamely answered our questions about Season One:

How does Rustin Cohle fit into the great, acclaimed work you've been doing for the last couple of years?
Oh yeah. Russtiiiinnn Cohhhhlllle. Ha ha! You know, I've been able to find such clearly identifiable characters, whether it's Mark Hanna in Wolf of Wall Street or Ron Woodruff in Dallas Buyers Club. Look at Dallas in Magic Mike and Joe in Killer Joe – these are characters with such clear obsessions. I've said this before, but that's what I've been choosing: Somebody who I could get drunk on their obsessions. Characters that live on the fringe — they're all a little bit on the outskirts of civilization. I find a certain ownership and freedom in that.

Oscars ratings: Most-watched entertainment telecast in 10 years

The 86th Annual Academy Awards set a major ratings record: Sunday’s telecast was the most-watched entertainment telecast in 10 years.

The 3.5-hour program hosted by Ellen DeGeneres delivered a whopping 43 million viewers and a 12.9 rating among adults 18-49. That’s the biggest non-sports audience since NBC’s 2004 Friends finale. It also represents the third year in a row for the ratings to rise, up 6 percent from 2013. The Oscars out-delivered January’s Golden Globes by 22.1 million viewers and the Grammy Awards by 14.5 million viewers.

According to Nielsen’s Social Guide, there were 11.2 million tweets about the event, with overall Oscar social media activity outpacing last year by 75 percent. ABC’s Oscar’s Red Carpet Live pre-show was also up, with the final half-hour delivering 27.6 million viewers.

The ratings boost also carried over to late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s post-awards show. Rising for the third year in a row, the 9th annual Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Oscars was up 22 percent to 7 million viewers.

From EW’s review of the Oscars: “Despite a terrifically loose Ellen DeGeneres, the first half of the Oscars was the type of slog that makes you wonder if your friends who don’t watch TV are onto something … Amy Adams spoke for all of us suffering quietly at home when she got caught checking her phone during Harrison Ford’s snoozy line reading of some Best Picture nominees.”

What To Expect From the Ben Wheatley Film HIGH-RISE and Tom Hiddleston

Last month, I read this article on about actor Tom Hiddleston being stuck in a "genre rut" because he has taken the lead in the upcoming film version of J.G. Ballard's "classic thriller" HIGH-RISE. Apologies to writer Jordan Smith, but it is in my own honest opinion that I don't think he has read HIGH-RISE. Yes, it is a thriller, but if I compare HIGH-RISE with films like those that Alfred Hitchcock had churned out, I don't believe this is a "classic thriller". Definitely, it's heavily psychological and, based on the re-read that I had done, I can understand why Hiddleston decided to take on the role of one of the lead characters (Yes, he is not the only "lead" in HIGH-RISE) in the movie version of the book.

In his interview with The Slate, director Ben Wheatley said that his wife and screenwriter Amy Jump "wanted to go back to the book, so it was straight back to the book." I am not sure just how faithful the script will be to Ballard's book.
