Wale Has Hilarious Meltdown Over Being Excluded From Complex's Best List

On Wednesday afternoon, Complex received a phone call from Wale. He was upset about the fact that his most recent album, The Gifted, was not included on The 50 Best Albums of 2013 list we posted earlier this week. I took the call, and spoke to him for less than three minutes. In those three minutes (which can be heard in the video above), Wale claimed that staff members at Complex had a personal bias against him, then started shouting and making threats.

“At this point, you know it’s got to be personal," he said. "You telling me it’s not personal. It's like a bold face lie. To be omitted from every type of list that y’all do or be at the bottom of it or every type of way that y’all can omit me, ya will.”

I told him it was not a personal thing. He cut me off.

“You mean to tell me Juicy J album better than mine?” he said, his voice rising. “Is that what you trying to tell me?”

Beyonce's Surprise Album Could Help Make 2014 Her Most Lucrative Year Yet

For Beyoncé fans who happened to be awake in the wee hours of Friday the 13th, Christmas came early this year–in the form of a surprise album by the superstar singer.

The self-titled visual album was released exclusively via iTunes as a complete download for $15.99; individual songs will be available starting December 20th. The list of collaborators on Beyoncé features a who’s-who of the music business, including Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Drake, Timbaland, Frank Ocean, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and, of course, Jay Z.

With so many high-profile names attached to the project, it’s a small miracle that nothing leaked in advance of the launch, but Beyoncé runs a tight ship.

“I’m never satisfied,” she told FORBES in a 2009 cover story, adding: “I’m sure sometimes it’s not easy working for me … I’ve never met anyone that works harder than me in my industry.”

Was he fired? Did he quit? It's uncertain at this point, but what we know is Joey Jordison is no longer in Slipknot. Here's what we know.

Slipknot have just posted the following comment on their official site:

To our Maggots and fans around the world,

It is with great pain but quiet respect, that for personal reasons Joey Jordison and Slipknot are parting ways. We all wish Joey the best in whatever his future holds. We understand that many of you will want to know how and why this has come to be, and we will do our best to respond to these questions in the near future. It is our love for all of you, as well as for the music we create, that spurs us to continue on and move forward with our plans for releasing new material in the next year. We hope that all of you will come to understand this, and we appreciate your continued support while we plan the next phase of the future of Slipknot.

Thank you,

Which begs the question, who could possibly replace Joey?

Beyonce's Surprise Album Trending Towards No. 1 on Billboard 200

Industry sources tell Billboard the album sold over 80,000 copies in three hours

The stealth Thursday evening (9 p.m PT) release of Beyonce's self-titled fifth solo studio set is likely headed towards a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 when that chart's top 10 is revealed on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

The iTunes exclusive "visual" album, retailing for $15.99 contains 14 tracks -- not available for a la carte purchases until Dec. 20 -- and 14 accompanying videos, along with other bonus video content. As of this morning, no set date has been announced for the CD release to physical retailers or of its availability on other digital download sites.

THE GUARDIAN: Beyonce's new album is an unashamed celebration of very physical virtues

Unusually for an industry fuelled by hype, it was the most well-kept secret since David Bowie's comeback album earlier this year, and all the more shocking for the global heft of its subject: at midnight Eastern Standard Time - around five o'clock this morning - Beyoncé suddenly released an album, available immediately through iTunes, with no advance promotional campaign at all.

A package of 14 new songs accompanied by 17 video clips, the self-titled “ visual album” is the singer's fifth long-player, and will only be obtainable in its entirety until tracks are individually downloadable in a week's time.

LA Times: Beyonce's game change - a surprise album release
Without as much as a hint, Beyonce stealthily released her new album.
As the West Coast was tucking into bed Thursday night, the singer rolled out one of the best-kept secrets in recent music history: The album she had spent the last year teasing was now available for purchase on iTunes.
The self-titled set comes as a “visual album” featuring 14 new tracks and 17 music videos.
It's currently available as an iTunes exclusive. Manufacturing of physical albums begins Thursday and a double disc CD/DVD will be available before the holidays, according to her label.

The Guardian: BEYONCE - first look review
In the year of the internet troll, Beyoncé might just be 2013's very best. Having hinted at an album since she performed at the Super Bowl back in February, Beyoncé has spent most of 2013 releasing songs for films (Rise Up), adverts (Grown Woman for Pepsi and Standing On The Sun for H&M) and DVDs (God Made You Beautiful) but not, it seemed, for her fans. It was, frankly, turning into a complete mess. Then, early this morning, and without warning, she dumped her self-titled fifth album on iTunes, complete with 14 songs and 17 videos (it's a "visual album" because Beyoncé "sees music" you guys, keep up).

Hi sweet. I see all the changes that are happening in and with you right now. Your body is changing. You’re becoming a woman. You’re no longer invited to play with the guys and I know you are sad about it. They see you differently now. You’re not “one of them” in their eyes, anymore. SOPHIE'S CHOICE: MTV Tried To Get ☆Jennifer Lawrence☆ To Choose Between BCoops and JHutch

Everyone is forced to make tough decisions in their life, even Jennifer Lawrence. While some may not find the choices J-Law has to make particularly difficult, they are clearly a struggle. The actress appeared on MTV web series, "After Hours," to play a little game of "This or That."

Lawrence is forced to choose between things like "Scandal" and "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," and most of the decisions aren't as easy as you might think. While she takes no time at all dropping "Scandal" in favor of the Kardashian clan, it's not something she's proud of. Then there are other questions, which take a bit of talking out before she can decide -- like whether prefers Cold Stone Creamery or Cinnabon, with the latter eventually getting the win.

Then the impossible question is presented when Jennifer is asked to choose between her "X-Men: First Class" co-stars Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart -- who are the best friends imaginable. "I can't do that," she says. "They're so precious together." Then she adds another in a long line of stories about the two actors. "They're so cute on the set of 'X-Men', when they have their La-Z-Boys and they read the newspaper and one of them's reading and, like, hands the paper off and they have a little chess board ... It is so adorable."

Interview: ‘Yoncé’ Director Ricky Saiz on Working With Beyoncé, Joan Smalls, and More

Before you get deep into Beyoncé binge-watching, start with the incredible "Yoncé" video, directed by Ricky Saiz. It's a contemporary, gritty, voyeuristic nod to George Michael's "Faith." Jourdan Dunn, Joan Smalls, and Chanel Iman star in this paean to nineties-era eroticism and subtle sexuality — think bondage, flashes of skin, close-ups of lips, and a quick erotic tongue flick. Madam Beyoncé and her cadre of hot, powerful, black models strut, preen, smolder, and gently twerk in leather, fishnets, and straps by the likes of Anthony Vaccarello and Tom Ford for YSL. It's two minutes and four seconds of fashion and sex. Too much. Can't handle it.

The Cut spoke to Saiz — video artist, director, and co-head of creative at Supreme — about working with the perfecta of Beyoncé, Joan, Chanel, and Jordan, how he got Bey into that Tom Ford for YSL molded bodysuit, and how to be sexy without even trying.

That Time Beyonce's Album Invalidated Every Criticism of Feminism EVER

If you don’t know by now, you’ve been living under a rock.

Early Friday morning, Beyonce gave us all a heart attack when she released her self-titled visual masterpiece, Beyonce.

And really, whose edges didn’t Beyonce snatch? She’s sexy, fun, talented. She’s a visionary — the videos are not only aesthetically pleasing, they are stories built from images. Her voice, as always, is perfection. She proves, once again, that she is the greatest of her time in overall entertainment. But there was something else about this album that caught our attention — something that wasn’t there in 2003′s Crazy in Love or critically acclaimed 4.

It was a womanhood I hadn’t seen before. It was Beyonce’s emancipation from social chains, from criticism, from the lines media drew that illustrate her as something manufactured or “polished” in comparison to the alternative, her sister Solange. These are boxes, they are inaccurate and Beyonce crushed them, quite literally, in this new album.

Bands shun Sea World: REO Speedwagon is the latest band to pull out of SeaWorld concert series

CNN: Add REO Speedwagon to the list of musical acts canceling SeaWorld shows because of the documentary "Blackfish."

"Due to concerns regarding our February 16 appearance at SeaWorld, we have chosen to cancel the performance," the rock band said on its Facebook page on Friday.

A promoter could put together a great concert series with the acts who have canceled SeaWorld shows in the past several weeks, including Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick, Heart and Barenaked Ladies.

The acts bailed on the Orlando theme park's "Bands, BBQ and Brew" concert series amid pressure from fans who started online petitions, tweeted and posted on Facebook pages demanding they not play SeaWorld.

NY Times: "Beyoncé's new album is steamy and sleek."

Beyoncé is flawless so no one else has to be.

That’s the theme of her superb fifth studio album, “Beyoncé” (Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia), which arrives as a feat of both music and promotion. Its songs are steamy and sleek, full of erotic exploits and sultry vocals; every so often, for variety, they turn vulnerable, compassionate or pro-feminist. And with both the songs and the videos, Beyoncé consolidates one of pop’s most finely balanced personas; she is, at once, glamorous and down-home, carnal and sweet, “Queen Bey” and a diligent trouper, polished and human. “Underneath the pretty face is something complicated,” she sings in “No Angel.”

Beyonce Explains The Visual Album on iTunes Radio

Pretty Hurts – “Pretty Hurts was such an incredible song, it’s really difficult to find a song with such a strong message that doesn’t feel preachy & Sia is such a genius. The second I heard the song, I’m like I have to sing this song. I don’t care how hard I have to fight for this song, this is my song! (laughs) I immediately saw the vision & I thought about pageants & I thought about the most humiliating ,judgmental place you can be as a woman. I feel like sometimes the world is a big contest, we’re all being judged. I wanted to capture how humiliating & insecure that makes you feel. Melina was able to capture that emotion & capture the extremes we feel we have to go to to please the people that judge us. I knew from the moment that I recorded the song that she was the person that I wanted to bring the visual to life.”

Jason Segel & Jesse Eisenberg Teaming Up for 'The End of the Tour'

Since making a splash at Sundance with the alcoholic drama Smashed starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, director James Ponsoldt returned to the festival this year with the stellar coming-of-age drama, The Spectacular Now. Ponsoldt has lined up a busy future with a developing biopic on Hilary Clinton and an adaptation of the Pure young adult novel series (not to mention some scripting duties on a couple films), and now one more project has been added to his list. The End of the Tour will star Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg in a film following author David Foster Wallace and Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky.

Segel will play the author who committed suicide in 2008 while Eisenberg will play the magazine reporter in a story that sees the journalist following Wallace around the United States as he promotes his book Infinite Jest. As Wallace's fame rises, a bit of a rivalry brews between him and Lipsky as they compare their romantic lives, depression and discuss the ups and downs of being famous. The Wrap reports Ponsoldt will direct from a script by playwright Donald Margulies, based on Lipsky's book Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip with David Foster Wallace.

This certainly sounds like the kind of film that Ponsoldt would bring to Sundance, so maybe it'll pop up at the festival in 2015 when the time comes. And it certainly sounds like a different kind of performance for Segel, who mainly sticks to comedy on the big screen. Eisenberg has dabbled a lot with work in films as varied as The Social Network, 30 Minutes or Less, Adventureland and this year's Now You See Me, with The Double coming next year. Segel and Eisenberg should make for quite a pairing, and we'll definitely keep our ears to the ground as this project develops.

Beyonce Bound for No. 1 As Sales Soar Past 400,000

Beyonce’s self-titled surprise release, which hit iTunes exclusively on Thursday evening (9 p.m. PT), has now sold over 430,000 units in just over one day, guaranteeing it the top slot on the Billboard 200 once that chart’s top 10 is revealed mid-week.

As reported yesterday, “Beyonce” shifted slightly over 80,000 in the three hours from 9 p.m. PT to midnight on Thursday evening, putting her Friday sales at roughly 350,000. With two more days left in the sales tracking week, the title could sell over 600,000 before the buzzer sounds.

The iTunes exclusive “visual” album, retailing for $15.99 contains 14 tracks- not available for a la carte purchases until Dec. 20- and 14 accompanying videos, along with other bonus video content. No set date has been announced for the CD release to physical retailers or of its availability on other digital download sites.

At 430,000, “Beyonce” is already set to become the biggest debuting album by a female artist since Taylor Swift sold an astounding 1.2 million copies of “Red” in the week corresponding to Billboard 200 chart dated Nov 10, 2012. And if predictions in the 600,000 range hold, the set would grant Beyonce the best debut week- and best sales week period- of her career. Her 2006 album “B’day” started with 541,000 in September 2006.

The Wanted's 'Word of Mouth' is a "Massive Global Flop" - Record Company Might Drop Them

I'm told Universal Music plan to drop the boyband after their third album Word Of Mouth proved to be a massive global flop.

I can reveal the final nail in the coffin came after their European tour was scrapped due to poor ticket sales - rather than "scheduling issues", which the band's management claimed.

Five reasons why ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ does not suck

Actually Three reasons but lbr the list goes on and on

For those who saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in theaters a year ago might have found it, familiar, in that it followed so many of the beats found in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, all the way down to a scene with Gollum crammed in. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy more than a fantasy quest and a Peter Jackson adaptation of a J.R.R. Tolkien novel, and it was created in magnificent craftsmanship, but as a stand-alone film, it left a lot to be desired. That says a lot about a film that was nearly three hours long. Oh there were technical bells and whistles and many film fans and pundits found themselves talking more about the merits of 3D or 48 frames per second more passionately than the actual story itself. We don’t think that will be the problem this time around. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is out this weekend and is a vast improvement than the first Hobbit film; here are the reasons why:

Collapse )

So those are the main things that largely make The Desolation of Smaug a more enjoyable experience than An Unexpected Journey. I could continue on about the beautifully orchestrated action sets, but those are a given benefit of Jackson’s monstrous films. The ones here hold up to many of those in the LOTR trilogy. However, there are still things that are annoying, like having too many Dwarves that don’t do anything except clutter up the screen. It also doesn’t help when viewers are trying desperately to connect to the Dwarves but are often upstaged by the heroics of Bilbo (he doesn’t have to be the hero of every moment). One wonders how the race of Dwarves rose to such heights. There’s still an excruciating cliffhanger that will make you strangle those sitting beside you and no, there’s not more after the credits. For all of the craft and purity theater experience Jackson speaks of, he’s yet found a way to stick a clean landing. Instead, many of his films play to the home video capability of dropping a blu-ray to finish the story. These films come out 12 months apart, and end in manner that could be best described as a your college roommate barging in on a steamy one-night stand. Considering these few foibles, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug not only salvages the Hobbit Trilogy, it will fuel the desire to see the final installment – and that’s a big improvement over how we felt a year ago.

Ambulance Called To Justin Bieber's Home for Unconscious Girl

Ambulances raced to Justin Bieber's Calabasas home early this morning after they received a 911 call saying a woman passed out inside ... TMZ has learned.

We've learned paramedics were dispatched to Bieber's crib this morning around 3 a.m. after someone at Beiber's reported there was a 20-year old unconscious female at the house ... but 15 minutes later the ambulances were called off.

Beiber was home at the time 911 was called. The person who called off the fire department told dispatch the woman would be transported privately to the hospital. But sources familiar with the situation tell us ... the woman regained consciousness and when she was told 911 had been called she insisted they be called off.

We're told the woman did not go to the hospital. She went home instead. We know alcohol was involved. We don't know what, if anything else, was involved.

We're also told the woman was attending a party thrown by Bieber.

Someone connected to Bieber told us ... a member of the singer's security team called 911 out of abundance of caution but the woman turned out to be ok.

This seems suspect to me.

Review Roundup: Beyoncé – ‘BEYONCÉ’

Beyoncé’s fifth self-titled album arrived without warning and is already reaping the rewards. The surprise release, which secretly hit iTunes on Friday, rocketed to No. 1 in 100 countries and generated 1.2 million tweets in its first 12 hours.

On the visual LP, Bey crafts 14 songs and 17 videos with some help from Jay Z, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Blue Ivy, and more.

But the fans weren’t the only ones raving. The critics have also applauded her unprecedented move. The New York Times called the album “superb,” while Entertainment Weekly awarded it an A-.

Read some of the glowing reviews below.

Entertainment Weekly:
This album reveals plenty of what’s in that head of hers. One of the most beautiful, painstakingly constructed women in the world singing ‘Pretty Hurts’? … Here more than ever Bey indulges clashing impulses—between strength and escape, megapop and fresh sounds, big messages and resonant lyrics. A-

Rolling Stone: The vibe on BEYONCÉ is moodily futuristic R&B, strongest when it goes for full-grown electro soul with an artsy boho edge. “Blow,” the best track here, evokes Janet Jackson circa The Velvet Rope, a song about oral sex that has an air of melancholy in the chilly neo-disco groove. There’s a similar mood in her excellent Drake duet “Mine.” 3.5/5
