Guess What? Kids These Days Don't Find the OG 'Halloween' Scary

John Carpenter's "Halloween" changed the rules of horror filmmaking when it was released 35 years ago today, taking cues from Hitchcock's "Psycho" and shaping the "slasher" movie as we now know it.

The film about masked killer Michael Myers's holiday rampage in a sleepy Illinois suburb is recognized as bona fide classic, and generally considered one of the most frightening movies of all time. Of course, the voting body for many of the lists that "Halloween" (which Anchor Bay is celebrating with a 35th anniversary Blu-ray) tops remembers when the film opened in theaters, or discovered it on VHS in the '80s or on DVD in the '90s.

What about for younger generations who have witnessed horror's dramatic evolution in the decades since? Do the film's shock tactics still work on an audience accustomed to more advanced effects, bloodier, gorier murders, and more sadistically deranged "torture porn" villains? Just how much as the film "aged" since its 1978 release? Simply put, does it still hold up today?

We showed the film to a group of 10 college-aged viewers from around the country who had never seen Carpenter's original before, and then compiled their reactions on the film.

The general consensus? "Halloween" just didn't do it for most of our Millennial subjects in the scare department. In response to an overarching question asking to rate the film's "scariness" on a scale of 1-10, the film registered a meager 5.4 rating. The highest single rating it got? A 7.5. The lowest, a 2.

R.I.P. Lou Reed: David Bowie, John Cale, Kim Gordon, and More Honor the Late Rock Icon

Read tributes by Julian Casablancas, Guns N' Roses, Jim James, Nile Rodgers, and Sub Pop Records

Following reports that Lou Reed died on Sunday, October 27, at the age of 71, droves of musicians expressed grief and paid tribute to the Velvet Underground co-founder on Twitter. As of press time, an official cause of death has not yet been revealed, but Reed's literary agent, Andrew Wylie, told the New York Times he believed Reed's passing was related to a liver transplant the singer-songwriter underwent earlier this year. Wylie added, "He was as great an artist as it is possible to be in my opinion."

Surviving VU member John Cale shared a simple but tender remembrance on Facebook, writing, "The world has lost a fine songwriter and poet; I've lost my 'school-yard buddy'."

David Bowie's official Facebook posted a photo of Bowie and Reed together in 2007 with a caption that reads, "It is with great sadness that we report the death of Lou Reed who died today aged 71. (March 2, 1942 - October 27, 2013)... David Bowie said of his old friend: "He was a master."

Queen Cher: "I didn't enjoy my Vegas residency"

Cher unhappy with Vegas gigs

Singer CHER struggled to enjoy her $180 million three-year residency in Las Vegas because the shows were always attended by sedate audiences of elderly fans.

The Believe hitmaker staged almost 200 concerts at the Caesars Palace venue from 2008 to 2011 and admits she was initially "angry" when she realized the gigs would be a laidback affair.

She eventually vowed to put on a fiery performance every night regardless of the audience's reaction as for many fans it was their last chance to see her singing live.

Cher tells U.K. talk show host Graham Norton, "(It was) difficult. The audience is not allowed to stand up and they are very, very old and sometimes they had walkers and oxygen masks. I'm not kidding.

"I was angry for a long time and then finally I thought this might be the last concert they ever see and they are enjoying it in their own way. It's not my way and it didn't make me feel good but they were having a wonderful time."

Chris Braide on Britney's 'Perfume': "EFFORTLESSLY ICONIC"

The cat’s out of the perfume bottle.

We all know that Britney Jean Spears‘ upcoming Britney Jean maybe-single “Perfume” was co-penned by this week’s Billboard cover star, Sia.

But there’s another writer on the track — none other than Chris Braide, the talented songwriter and producer known for his work on Lana Del Rey‘s Born To Die (“Million Dollar Man”), as well as dozens of Brit-pop acts like Diana Vickers, The Saturdays and Pixie Lott.

I spoke with Chris about three years ago (time goes by…not so slowly), and we nerded out about all things pop — as one does. This week, I checked in again with Chris about his work with the Holy Spearit, and he was nice enough to provide MuuMuse with a lil’ tidbit about producing Brit Brit’s Spearitual vocals on “Perfume”:

When I was producing her vocals, it was obvious to me why she’s still one of the greatest pop stars ever. Unmistakably Britney, effortlessly iconic.

And there you have it, direct from the “Perfume” co-writer himself. Are you ready for what’s next?

And it would seem that Kim Kardashian has now found a new showbiz bestie in the form of Cheryl Cole as the pair came face-to-face at a Kanye West concert on Saturday night.

Evidently keen to let the world know that they had struck up a friendship, both the 33-year-old reality star and the 30-year-old singer posted snaps on their Instagram pages of them hanging out at the concert.

John Lennon's Lovers Reconcile

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Sir Paul cleared the air regarding his longrunning public disputes with John Lennon’s widow over the years, telling the magazine that things have been going smoothly thanks to ”time, the great healer.”

“She’s badass,” McCartney admitted. “I thought, ‘If John loved her, there’s got to be something. He’s not stupid.’ It’s like, what are you going to do? Are you going to hold a grudge you never really had?”

He added that the late George Harrison also provided some helpful advice: “George would say to me, ‘You don’t want stuff like that hanging around in your life.’”

This goes along with an interview McCartney gave around this time last year, when he told David Frost that he didn’t hold Ono responsible for splitting up the Beatles. “I don’t think you can blame her for anything,” he said then. “She certainly didn’t break the group up, the group was breaking up.”

Ono, whose name for years has been synonymous with “band-wrecker,” has also opened up about all this. ”I was very, very thankful,” she recently told the Times of London. “I mean, I was shocked. I thought, ‘Now you are saying it? Now, after 40 years? But it was very good. In the atmosphere that the world created for us, it was not easy for him to say something like that.”

The moral of the story? It’s never too late to still talk about the Beatles.

Just like Blomkamp’s last film, Elysium, Chappie is a partnership between Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital.

Here is the logline, supplied by the companies: “After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.”

Sharlto Copley is voicing Chappie, while the human cast includes Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret.

Blomkamp wrote the screenplay with Terri Tatchell. He is producing the film with Simon Kinberg.

Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor are overseeing Chappie for Sony, Brye Adler for MRC.

Now the Queen of Sci-fi has joined the cast? I am enjoying this cast way more than Elysium's so far, can this movie come out already please? (and the fact that Chappie is actually a bb makes it all the more better)

Priyanka Chopra for Guess

Priyanka Chopra is excited and honored to be Guess’ “first brown model”.

The beautiful new face of the label is relatively unknown in the Western world, but has garnered great success as a Bollywood actress in her native India as well as being crowned Miss World in 2000.

The new campaign launches in the December issues of Harper’s Bazaar, Nylon, Paper, Marie Claire, Elle and WSJ. magazine.

“I’m their first brown model. For a global fashion brand, for them to move their campaign into a global space, for me it’s an honor.

“Guess pictures are so iconic. They show women as beautiful, feminine, powerful and yet candid. But being the next Guess girl was something that I would have never thought of, but when I met Paul [Marciano, co-founder of Guess] he was like, ‘You’re it. It has to be you.’” she explained to WWD.

The images were taken by music legend Bryan Adams, who’s also lensed the three previous Guess campaigns.

Priyanka was surprised at the choice of photographer, but after getting over her initial shock the pair got on famously and produced a sizzling set of photos.

“I never even knew Bryan was a photographer. I just knew of him as an incredible musician, and he’s super famous in India.

“But when we met, we were just like a house on fire. The vibe was like a young Sophia Loren. I wanted to play characters, and I wanted to be in the mood. I wanted every picture to speak of a story,” she said.

Eight (5) of the Scariest Movies Ever Marketed to Children

Joe Dante is somewhat of a master of family-friendly genre filmmaking. Aside from Gremlins, his resume includes films like Explorers and most recently The Hole. One of his most successful efforts – Gremlins – pushed the boundaries of what one could get away with in a PG-rated film (and helped instigate the creation of the PG-13 rating). While the cuddly Gizmo was demure and thoughtful, his spawn were evil little monsters that certainly gave young and impressionable viewers some serious scares. The "gremlin in a blender" scene is particularly brutal, and certain to terrify almost any impressionable youngster.

Gaga, Madonna, Olly Murs: Celebrities who've gone naked on stage

Before getting a birthday cake peace offering metaphorically thrown in her face by Kelly Osbourne, Lady Gaga was having a wonderful time in London, giving fans a bit of a surprise when she stripped completely naked during an appearance at G-A-Y on Saturday (October 26).

As shocking as Gaga's disrobing may have been, the 'Venus' singer is of course not the first celebrity to bare flesh during a performance - not by a long shot. Here are some more examples of stars going full frontal - or pretty close to it - on stage.

It's almost a certainty in life that if Gaga does something, Madonna will have done something similar. We've seen the legendary popstar naked more times than we can count in a variety of mediums over the past 30 years, and even though she's now well into her 50s, Madge has no intention of covering up in a nice cardie.

The summer heat must have really got to Madonna during her 'MDNA' tour last year, as she randomly felt the need to expose her right breast during a June concert in Istanbul, before giving the left one an airing in Paris the following month, presumably because it was feeling left out. We'd expect nothing less from someone who believes so passionately in equality!

Netflix vs. Movie-Theater Owners

This weekend, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos gave the keynote address at the ninth annual Film Independent Forum. Beyond talking about how great Netflix is doing, he threw a bit of shade. Much of this was directed toward movie-theater owners, who Sarandos feels are stifling innovation.

Sarandos argued that the theaters stick too strictly to their exclusive window for when a film gets released. He thinks when a movie comes out it should be instantly available on Netflix. It is so problematic that it might force Netflix to interfere: "The reason why we may enter this space and try to release some big movies ourselves this way is because I'm concerned that as theater owners try to strangle innovation and distribution. Not only are they going to kill theaters, they might kill movies."

In response, the president of the National Association of Theater Owners John Fithian told Deadline, "Subscription movie services and cheap rentals killed the DVD business, and now Sarandos wants to kill the cinema as well." Adding, "The only business that would be helped by day-and-day release to Netflix is Netflix. If Hollywood did what Sarandos suggests, there wouldn’t be many movies left for Netflix’s customers or for anyone else." Fithian points out that theaters provide a much higher return for films than Netflix does.

A post for you to feel fat & ugly

Selena Gomez showed off her smoking-hot bikini body during a break in Miami on Monday. The singer, who is currently on her Stars Dance tour, relaxed with a group of friends and hit the pool for a quick dip in a skimpy printed two-piece. Selena is likely enjoying some downtime before she hits the stage for two performances in Florida this week. After that, she'll head to her home state of Texas for a string of shows. Selena has been sharing sweet photos with her fans on Instagram throughout the tour but hit a social media snag during a concert in New York's Brooklyn borough earlier this month. Apparently, the Barclays Center's non-Instagram policy upset Selena so much that she burst into tears on stage and later posted a puffy-eyed snap, saying, "Never ended such a beautiful show in tears because they wouldn't allow me to Instagram tonight. Ciara engaged to music producer Future, gets 15-carat ring

"The ring is a very intricate design which took longer to actually design than it did to produce," a rep for the company said. "We went through several molds and concept models before landing on the proper design, which allowed for maximum shine and stability in the diamonds. What Stans and Haters Say About Your Favorite Rapper...(And the Reality)

It's hard to know who to trust.

Everyone has their own opinions, especially about something like music. And when these opinions are expressed, especially on the internet, they are often rebuffed. With GREAT VITRIOL!!! Amazingly enough, not everybody agrees with everything everybody else says. The surprising result: contradictory opinions!

If you like a certain artist's music more than the person you're talking to, chances are you are a "Stan." Named for the famous fanatic in Eminem's classic, Stans love their favorite stars so much that they are blind to any possible faults these stars might have. They love everything and anything their idols do, unconditionally, totally irrationally. They would literally buy a piece of poop that has come from the bottom of those they worship.

If you dislike a certain artist's music more than the person you're talking to, you are probably a "hater." Named for "player hater," someone who's hatred of someone else is based more on jealousy than anything else, haters hate their least favorite stars so much that they are blind to any possible redeeming qualities the stars might have. They hate everything and anything the targets of their bile do, unconditionally, totally irrationally. They would literally find fault with the Mona Lisa if it was painted by one of the artists they hate.

As you can see arguing either side of these matters can be very frustrating. What's the "truth?" Well, the quality of music made by an individual is a subjective judgment. So there really is not any "truth."

Except for what we, the staff at Complex magazine, believe. That is the truth. That is the objective reality. Don't be a Stan, don't be a hater. Learn the truth. Read What Stans and Haters Say About Your Favorite Rapper...(And the Reality.)

4 new 'Thor: The Dark World' TV spots + interview with director Alan Taylor

Collapse )

It's a little odd to hear a director criticize his own movie -- especially one he's currently promoting. Actors sometimes have beefs because his or her favorite scene was cut or shortened, but it's usually the director making that call. So when Alan Taylor -- who has directed some of the best television episodes in recent history -- openly says he didn't get final cut of a movie like "Thor: The Dark World", it is, at least, an interesting glimpse into the high-stakes world of Marvel movies.

Alan Taylor has directed episodes of "Mad Men" (including the pilot), "The Sopranos," "Deadwood," "Rome" and "Game of Thrones." (Note: Taylor discusses pivotal scenes on all of those series in this interview, so if you're currently on a "Sopranos" binge, you've been warned. He also discuses some serious plot points of "Thor: The Dark World," but no specific character names are mentioned.) "Thor" is, without question, Taylor's biggest foray into movies and, yes, it's apparent some bumps were hit along the way. Taylor doesn't seem pleased about the amount of exposition that starts the film, and, no, he really doesn't seem to like the now-expected Marvel mid-credits teaser that he did not direct. Also, there were additional scenes filmed after initial production had ended and, here, Taylor explains what those scenes were and why they were added. But, as Taylor admits, even though he might not agree with every decision, it's really hard to argue with Marvel's success. (And it doesn't take a Norse god to realize that "Thor: The Dark World" will be another Marvel success.)

Model Robyn Lawley: Why The Dangerous “Thigh Gap” Trend Makes Me Mad

A disturbing trend online encourages girls to be so thin they can see a gap between their thighs. Model Robyn Lawley reacts:

“Thinspiration” has always been a scary subject online -- when unhealty images and messages proliferated on social networks such as Pinterest, Tumblr, and Instagram are used to encourage users to be unhealthily thin.

There is now a disturbing breed of thinspiration that pressures women and girls to pursue a “thigh gap,” which is defined as the space between one's thighs. Everywhere online, users are posting aspirational pictures of thigh gaps, used as inspiration for weight loss and dieting. “I want the thigh gap. Right now, I could start a fire b/t my thighs,” one user laments on Pinterest. “No goal was ever achieved without thigh gap.”

Tori Spelling: "I was on the "keep your f***ing mouth shut and eat air diet"':

Tori Spelling admits she lied about how she lost baby weight after fourth child

Her latest memoir has so far contained some explosive revelations about the dire state of her finances and 'plastic' celebrity acquaintance Katie Holmes.
But according to Radar, Tori Spelling has now also revealed she lied about how she lost weight after giving birth to her fourth child Finn Davey back in August 2012.
Tori claims in her tome Spelling It Like It Is that she shed the excess pounds through dieting rather than swimming as she once claimed.

The former Beverly Hills 90210 star says she couldn't exercise for several months after the birth of Finn after which she underwent emergency surgery when the stitches from her caesarian section burst open.
'For several months, I couldn't really exercise,' she writes. 'There were a couple reasons. First, there was some risk that my scar would open up again. I was terrified of that.
'Second, I really don't exercise much, period. So I took my weight the old-fashioned way. I like to call it the Just Keep Your F***ing Mouth Shut and Eat Air diet. It's all the rage.'
However, when Tori took part in a bikini shoot with Us Weekly magazine, she told them she lost weight through swimming. 'My publicist had given me clear instructions about what to say about my weight loss,' she explains.

In the book, the svelte star says she actually shed the pounds through 'nibbling rice cakes' and 'eating soup and dinners that looked like they belonged in some health magazine.
'With my sedentary lifestyle, it was the only way and it worked,' she says. 'My clothes were starting to fit again.'

Ed Sheeran introduced to new girlfriend by "world's best wingman" Taylor Swift

Ed Sheeran has moved on from his brief August fling with Ellie Goulding. He spent the weekend at an Arkansas wedding with new girlfriend Claire Donald.

Donald is a friend of Sheeran's former tourmate Taylor Swift. The fashion model appeared alongside Swift in both the music video for "We Are Never Getting Back Together" and a Ked's advertisement campaign.

In August, Donald tweeted a picture of herself and Swift backstage at the Staples Centre in LA, where Swift and Sheeran played a string of sold-out shows. She mentioned that she was "super grateful to have become friends" with Swift. In late September, Swift and Donald were photographed leaving Barneys New York in LA after a shopping trip with singer Demi Lovato.

In a recent interview on New Zealand radio show, Smallzy's Surgery, Sheeran said of Swift: "There's friendship love but we're not romantically involved. She's probably the world's best wingman. She's got some cool friends."

Penn Badgley shows off his toned physique - and not much else - as he strips down in a public park

Gossip Girls is behind him, but Penn Badgley still knows how to get people to talk.

On Monday the 26-year-old actor was seen making the most of LA's warm weather by taking his shirt off while lazing about in the city's Echo Park.

He did manage to keep his brown shorts and matching brown Nike trainers firmly in place.

The physically-fit Baltimore native wore his hair shaggier than usual, showing off the natural curl normally hidden when his coif was slicked back while playing the role of Dan Humphrey on the prime time soap opera that made him famous.

He also worked a bit of facial hair, which seemed to be the beginnings of a full beard.

As far as sunscreen - he didn't use any. But he did appear to be making music with his hands and whistling a tune as he held onto his white T-shirt.
