Sexist author David Gilmour, he's backtracking now: "There isn't a sexist bone in my body"

David Gilmour is some nobody author that was posted about last night.

Yesterday, ONTD hated on him (with thanks to hawaii_bombay for being a jerk who said: “I’m not interested in teaching books by women” and “I don’t love women writers enough to teach them, if you want women writers go down the hall. What I teach is guys. Serious heterosexual guys.” Gilmour, whose latest novel, Extraordinary, was recently longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, tried to explain himself to Books Editor of Canada's National Post Mark Medley on Wednesday afternoon.

Q: Are you surprised by the response to your comments?

A: I’m absolutely surprised, but I’m also extremely sorry to hear that there are people who are really offended by it. I’ve been getting some letters this morning from people who are deeply, racially, ethnically, and intellectually offended by this. This was an interview I gave sort of over the shoulder.

What Happened On “The Mindy Project” This Week Was Not Okay

Usually The Mindy Project is one of the smartest and funniest shows on television. But this week’s episode makes light of rape.

This week's episode, called “The Other Dr. L,” revolved around Dr. Paul Leotard (played by guest star James Franco) having sex with the ex-wife of one of Mindy's coworkers. This is portrayed as a funny and dramatic plotline (that, most importantly, gives James Franco’s character an excuse to leave the show). The problem is that the sex is clearly not consensual.

In the episode, Mindy challenges Dr. L to a boozy “shot off." Mindy wins and remains remarkably sober for someone who just downed 14 shots (her secret is that she ate a whole loaf of bread before she went out), but Dr. L gets so wasted that Mindy has to help him to his apartment. Once there, she can’t find his keys, so she just lays him down in the hallway. She then kisses him, and he yells "Woah, neighbors!" She puts her hand over his mouth and says "Nothing happened, you liked it," before leaving him there.

The 2013 Hemsworth Brothers Power Rankings: Round One

In August 2012, I made a very bold but heartfelt statement: Liam is the better Hemsworth. At the time, my argument was all about possibility: The younger Australian brother has so much life ahead of him! Anything could happen! And as you might have guessed, in the past year, things have happened — to both Hemsworths, actually. A quick glance at the fall 2013 schedule (and/or the definition of life) indicates that things are going to keep happening — specifically Thor 2 and Hunger Games: Catching Fire — so it seemed only right to reopen the discussion. Here now is the first edition of our new and improved Hemsworth Power Rankings, to be revisited throughout the fall.

A Sensible Discussion About Twerking With Its Foremost Expert

Sissy bounce queen Big Freedia appeared on last night's episode of FXX's Totally Biased to promote her upcoming reality show on Fuse. Her ensuing interview with W. Kamau Bell was a refreshing alternative to the online hysteria about twerking, Miley Cyrus, and cultural appropriation. Freedia, as you may know, attempted to set a world record for twerking on Wednesday in New York, though the claim that she succeeded in setting said record is being contested. Either way, she knows her stuff.

She schooled Bell in the difference between twerking and the other dance forms she employs. She rated Cyrus' VMAs performance ("Um..."), adding, "I'm very thankful that Miley opened that door for twerking and bounce music, but she definitely needs to come get a lesson from Big Freedia." (This reminds me of something Little Richard said about Elvis Presley, who has similarly been described as racist for appropriating black culture: "He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music.").
When specifically discussing white appropriation of twerking, Freedia said, "When you come to a Big Freedia show, it's all walks of life, and I encourage everybody to twerk. Black, white, fat, skinny, every genre we encourage them. And that's what it's about."

Well isn't that sensible and free of the faux outrage that has often accompanied discussion of the hot-button cultural issue of twerking? It would be so nice if it were the last word on this subject (but don't worry, it won't be — you'll still have plenty more chances to be upset).

Freedia then proved her egalitarian twerking philosophy by leading Bell and audience members in a twerking tutorial.

Elementary Keeps Getting Sherlock Holmes Right

The second season seems likely to avoid the blockbuster drama and police-procedural formulas of other Sherlock interpretations while taking its own creative liberties.

Out of the many anxiety-inducing mysteries Elementary has presented its viewers, the biggest is this: Will it be good in its second season as it was in its first?

After premiering last fall and taking a few episodes to really establish its characters and tone, the CBS Sherlock Holmes adaptation began delivering exciting stories each week while offering some of the strongest character development and episodes-spanning narratives arcs on television. It all built to a satisfying season finale. Thankfully, with tonight's premiere, “Step Nine,” Elementary seems destined for a strong sophomore season.

Tom Hiddleston Wanted Jeremy Irons To Hit Him Harder, Fight Club Style, For "The Hollow Crown"

Thor star Tom Hiddleston was left battered and bruised by his The Hollow Crown co-star Jeremy Irons after insisting the Oscar winner really hit him in a tense father-and-son scene.

Irons plays the young actor's dad in the mini-series, which combines four of William Shakespeare's history plays, and Hiddleston admits the veteran actor can pack a punch.

He tells TV Guide, "I thought Henry should hit (my character) Hal as hard as he could. Jeremy said, 'Are you sure you're all right with this?'

"We did it for six or seven takes, and he had two magisterial rings on his fingers."

'Bob's Burgers' Star and YouTube Sensation John Roberts AKA Linda Interview

If you only know comedian John Roberts for his YouTube holiday homage to his mother (“Make it nice around the tree! Come on, make it even! Make it nice!”), you’re missing out on some of the gifted character actor’s best work. His performance as Belcher-clan matriarch Linda is one of the best things about FOX’s brilliant series Bob’s Burgers, a show already miles ahead of its animated contemporaries.

Created by Loren Bouchard (Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist), Bob’s follows a working-class family comprised of Linda, the titular Bob (played by venerable voice actor, H. Jon Benjamin) and their three children (voiced by comedians Kristen Schaal, Eugene Mirman and Dan Mintz). Its IMDB page reads like a who’s-who of today’s comedy, including appearances from Bill Hader, Sarah Silverman and Megan Mullally. The show manages to blend quirky character comedy and warm-and-fuzzy family sweetness without becoming overly cloying -- or devolving into the kind of dude-humor that dominates contemporary animation. Even when Bob’s does potty humor, it’s with style. (For example, the episode “O.T.: The Outside Toilet,” is a salute to Spielberg and the toilet is voiced by Jon Hamm.)

The show is gearing up for its fourth season, kicking off Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on FOX, and a fifth season was announced yesterday. We spoke with Roberts about coming out, what his mom is really like and what makes Bob’s Burgers feel a little bit gay.

Cast of "Sils Maria" films in Sils Maria

Sils Maria. - No set visit, no interviews, no access to the hotel "Waldhaus" in Sils. These were the rules for journalists and photographers, which involved the shooting for the film "Sils Maria". These rules have been complied with adamantly. Only on the last day of shooting at the Casino St. Moritz, the Swiss producer Jean-Louis Porchet "Radio and Television Rumantscha" suddenly granted a look at the Hollywood stars Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche. Although the pictures show only the film crew at the bar of the Casino St. Moritz, but at least the pictures are exclusive.

The former director and present culture manager of the hotel, Felix Dietrich, chatted with the "suedostschweiz" after the completion of filming. He raved about the "great lady of the film," Juliette Binoche. To be able to work undisturbed, the production company CAB Productions SA did not allowed any press during filming. The set was visited by helicopter, the hotel was dominated by strict safety regulations. One paparazzo has still managed to get into the hotel - disguised as a hotel guest.

The film "Sils Maria" by French writer-director Olivier Assayas deals with the acclaimed actress Mary Enders (Juliette Binoche), who had auditioned for a role and is ousted by a younger. James Franco's 'As I Lay Dying' Pushed From A Theatrical Release To DVD, iTunes, VOD Debut

After premiering at Cannes in May, James Franco's adaptation of "As I Lay Dying" was scheduled for a Sept. 27 theatrical debut. Days before the William Faulkner classic was set to arrive in theaters, however, it was announced that the film will not be shown on the big screen.

Millennium Films, the distributor behind Franco's "As I Lay Dying," scrapped plans for a theatrical release this week, THR reports. The company now plans to release the film on Oct. 22 on iTunes, and on Nov. 5 on DVD and VOD/iVOD.

The film, which follows Faulkner's original story of death and honor, was reportedly seen as a "difficult sell to a general audience rather than the art house crowd."

Written, directed by and starring Franco, "As I Lay Dying" also features appearances by Danny McBride, Beth Grant and Tim Blake Nelson, among others.

Where Are the 'Real' Women in Movies About Sex Addiction?

Through their male protagonists, two new films smartly critique the media's objectification of women, but don't manage to include three-dimensional female characters of their own.

Two newly released movies about sexual addiction, Don Jon and Thanks for Sharing, represent the latest instance of a sporadic but persistent movie phenomenon: when movies with eerily similar subjects come out around the same time. In the ‘80s there was the series of body-swapping movies like Big and Like Father, Like Son. A decade or so later, it was Armageddon and Deep Impact. Last year there were two Snow White movies, Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror, Mirror. What’s behind these cinematic couplets? Some might argue it’s a simple case of one studio copying another studio’s good idea; others would claim coincidence. Both might be right. But in each case listed above, we can also point to societal discussions that these movies are participating in, ideas so urgent and systemic that they can’t help but find their way into our entertainment.

For example: I have argued that the body-swapping movies reflected the rise of the Yuppie Era, which found young Americans with more money and responsibility than ever before. The meteor movies confronted, among other things, our existential anxiety over the coming of the new millennium. The Snow White movies were part of a series of 2012 films with female action heroes—a trend that also included The Hunger Games, Brave, and Prometheus—that signal a shift in ideas about gender.

That discussion continues with Thanks for Sharing and Don Jon, which, when taken together, represent a step in the ongoing march towards an honest and fair depiction of women onscreen. It’s not a step forward; more of a side-step. These films attack the male sexual gaze through which women in film are often filtered, though they also fail to actually portray women in any sort of lifelike way.

Michael Jordan Sued By Georgia Woman Claiming That He Is Her Daughter’s Father

It's like deja vu all over again -- Michael Jordan has just been sued by another woman claiming he's the father of her baby ... but just like last time, MJ says she's a fame whore liar out for cash.

Laquetta Theus filed the paternity suit in Georgia, claiming she gave birth to Juyana Rachelle Henderson in August 2010 ... and MJ's the daddy.

Shocker, Laquetta's out for child support ... big time ... she even wrote on her Facebook profile, "Michael Jordan, when are you going to support your 2-year-old daughter? You drop 10 million on your nice wedding ... that was nice but don’t you think it time that you support your daughter?"

Laquetta's lawsuit is pretty much a carbon copy of a suit that was filed against Jordan earlier this year by Pamela Smith, who made nearly identical claims. Pamela's claim has already been tossed out.

As for Laquetta ... Jordan filed legal docs claiming her kid's paternity has already been established. Some other guy's the baby daddy -- not him.

Giancarlo Esposito is open to returning to ‘Breaking Bad’ as Gus for the ‘Saul’ spin off

Earlier this month AMC greenlit the Breaking Bad spin off Better Call Saul which will be a prequel. Giancarlo Esposito is one actor who’d be interested in coming back to reprise his role as Gus.

The actor played fan favorite character Gus in earlier seasons of AMC’s hit meth drama before Walt successfully eliminated him with a bomb to the face. Said Esposito to The Wrap earlier this month about potentially returning for the spin off, “I love my Breaking Bad family and would welcome the chance to work with them again if given the opportunity.”

What’s more, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan said earlier this year that he would love to work with the Gus actor again. He said in July, “Any chance I get to work with Giancarlo again, I would jump at the opportunity. He is a wonderful actor and such a sweet guy.”

So is this a match made in heaven? While we don’t know much yet about Better Call Saul, we do know that Gus was in the meth business for a while before being knocked off, so it’s quite possible that he could’ve been working with people who by extension were working with the colorful lawyer. Like we mentioned above, Gus was an excellent character and beloved for all the wrong reasons by viewers, so his return would be a major get for the show and help draw in viewers.

Meanwhile, Breaking Bad season 5, episode 16 – the series finale – airs this Sunday, September 29 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC.

Jennifer Lawrence films cameo in "Dumb and Dumber" sequel

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Harry and Lloyd are adding some Oscar-winning star power to Dumb and Dumber To.

Jennifer Lawrence is making a small cameo in the sequel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, reporting to the Atlanta set on Friday to play a young version of Kathleen Turner's character. Lawrence's Hunger Games: Mockingjay set is nearby and sources say the entire cast visited the Dumb and Dumber To location.

Universal declined to comment.

As THR previously reported, the sequel to Peter and Bobby Farrelly's 1994 comedy classic will follow Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels' dimwitted duo as they embark on another road trip to find Harry's long-lost daughter. Rob Riggle is also among the cast which includes Turner, Rachel Melvin, Laurie Holden and Steve Tom.

Lawrence will next be seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and recently completed filming on David O. Russell's American Hustle and X-Men: Days of Future Past. She will next begin production on the third and fourth installments in Lionsgate's Hunger Games franchise.

Michael J. Fox reveals he initially coped with Parkinson’s diagnosis by ‘drinking heavily’

‘I felt helpless, it was unfair’ Fox, 52, said about having to quit acting in the early 2000s. Now, the actor says his life has completely ‘turned around.’

Michael J. Fox opened up about learning to cope with his Parkinson's diagnosis, speaking to radio host Howard Stern in an interview on Wednesday.

"It felt helpless, it felt unfair in a way," Fox said, of the days when his condition began to get worse, resulting in his retirement from acting in 2000.

Fox, 52, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1991, but revealed his condition to the public in 1999. He explained to Stern that even in knowing of his condition, he waited years to seek therapy — instead self-medicating.

"My first reaction to it was to start drinking heavily," he said. "I used to drink to party, but now I was drinking alone and … everyday."

"Once I did that it was then about a year of like a knife fight in a closet, where I just didn't have my tools to deal with it … but then after that I went to therapy and it all started to get really clear to me."

In treatment Fox said he learned to "take one day at a time."

"And then things started to really turn the other way … my marriage got great."

Fox explained that his marriage to former "Family Ties" co-star Tracy Pollan still works well because she has been a great support system. The cheeky actor even joked about his sex life.

"Sex is great," he told Stern. "The only thing about sex I would say is deciding who's going to be the agent of motion."

"You don't have scumbags hopping over fences trying to take pictures of your daughter," West claimed before devolving into pure rage and accusing Kimmel of leading a sexless life and having an artless face.

For some, it was just another of West's "rants," another time that Angry/Crazy/Unhinged Kanye West let his ego get the best of him. Those people are basic.

W00t! We here at Bane Chronicles Enterprises are SUPER EXCITED. We love the podcast Welcome to Night Vale and we extra love Cecil Baldwin, who we are delighted to announce is the next Bane Chronicles reader, for Fall of the Hotel Dumort.

Maureen’s love for Night Vale introduced us all to it, and we were thrilled to see a spooky funny fantasy with an interracial gay romance front and center doing so well, so it seemed like a perfect fit for Bane, especially Fall, which is probably the closest installment to a classic horror story. Maureen will be in the studio with Cecil while he records so if you have questions for him about anything — Bane, Carlos’ perfect hair — shoot her a tweet @maureenjohnson !

OP: Is it too cynical of me to smell bandwagoning here? Seems like any time something becomes remotely popular Cassandra and her lot are there testing the udders to see how much potential milking there is. And here's to hoping her interracial gay romance will be more than a polished token and a grasp for cookies.

10 (Actually 5) Facts About Rap That People Don't Talk About Enough

Jay-Z made #FACTSONLY a new rap motto this year. But not all facts are created equal.

Some we know all too well, like that rap albums don’t sell as well they used to, and that mixtapes are where most of the good music is. But as the new reality of the genre and the industry continues to change shape, there are new laws of the land coming into focus. And some of them haven’t been discussed or understood enough to be common knowledge. Meanwhile, there’s some dusty old received wisdom still hanging around from the '90s that many heads need to finally disabuse themselves of.

Is there such a thing as a bad collaboration? Should rappers release every song they record? Does it matter that Drake “freestyles” with a Blackberry in front of him? Just how rare of an accomplishment is Kendrick’s platinum plaque? Should every MC turn their back on the major label machine and go independent? Is Atlanta still the center of the rap universe? Will Detox come out, or more importantly, does it matter if it ever does? We have answers to these questions, but more importantly, we have an idea why.

These are the 10 5 Facts About Rap That People Don’t Talk About Enough…

Rihanna booed after starting Adelaide concert 1 hour and 20 minutes late

MUSIC fans have vented their anger on social media after US singer Rihanna took to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre stage a full hour and twenty minutes late last night. The Barbadian singer was due on stage at 9pm after flying in from Perth where she was 40 minutes late for her show there on Tuesday.

She finally appeared an hour and twenty minutes late and when the lights finally went down, instead of cheers, there was booing.

And while the superstar singer remarked that it had taken her a long, long time to get back to Australia, there was no explanation or apology for her tardy arrival.

12 Minutes Of Gameplay Footage From 'The Evil Within'

Bethesda has released an extended playthrough of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s next horror game, The Evil Within, and boy, does this game look intense. Some of it is footage we’ve seen before, usually broken up, like in the recent gameplay trailer, but this is seamless. We finally get to see how this game plays, without fancy editing and marketing text.
Turn off the lights, crank up the volume and enjoy.

After more than 15 years of developmenеt hell, a film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Newbery-winning 1993 novel The Giver will finally begin production next month — with singer Taylor Swift in one of its supporting roles.

The Weinstein Company announced Swift’s casting today in a release that also names the rest of the film’s principals, many of whom have been attached to The Giver for months. They include Australian actor Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, a boy living in a colorless dystopian world; Jeff Bridges as The Giver, Jonas’s mentor (as well as one of the film’s producers); Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder of Jonas’s community; Katie Holmes as Jonas’s mother; Alexander Skarsgard as Jonas’s father; Cameron Monaghan as Jonas’s best friend Asher; and Odeye Rush as Jonas’s friend and love interest Fiona.

TWC tells EW that Swift will play Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas.
Salt helmer Phil Noyce will direct the film, with a screenplay by The Current War scribe Michael Mitnick. Production begins Oct. 7 in Cape Town, South Africa. Its release date has been set for August 15, 2014.

"It would have to be very compelling for me to do it again," the actor said of playing the "X-Men" character.

"Great parts always outgrow the actors that play them. If you forget that, it’s at your own peril," the Australian Oscar winner said, adding that eventually he will have to leave all his roles, including Wolverine, behind. "They are working on it [X-Men] now, and it would have to be very compelling for me to do it again. I’ve been doing it for 10 years," he said.

When asked repeatedly about switching comic characters from Wolverine to another superhero or joining in on a dual comic book movie, Jackman said it wasn’t up to him.

"The great thing about comic books is that they threw Batman in with Wolverine or Spiderman. I have people ask me all the time, ‘Do you think Spider-Man can beat Wolverine?’ It’s part of the DNA," Jackman said. "Marvel wanted me to do a cameo in the first Spider-Man, but I couldn’t find my suit.

I could have turned up before it was such a big deal. But I don’t have that kind of power to make it happen."

X-MEN:DAYS OF FUTURE PAST hits theatres  May 23rd, 2014

Hugh keeps talking about exiting the role of Wolverine.  It's leading me to believe Logan is killed in DOFP as well as the entire Original Trilogy cast so that it can be rebooted with new actors.

ONTD who you would cast as the iconic X-Men characters?

Albert Hammond Jr. says The Strokes could make 10 more albums & reveals new song 'Rude Customer'

Albert Hammond Jr. has said he can imagine The Strokes making 10 more albums, adding that he does not feel like the band will ever stop.

During an appearance on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show last night (September 26), the guitarist premiered the first track from his new solo EP and spoke about the future of The Strokes with his host.

When Lowe compared The Strokes to Guided By Voices, Hammond Jr agreed, prompting the DJ to share his feelings that the New Yorkers are now becoming the band they always wanted to be - before adding that he can see there being "10 more Strokes albums" in the future.

Agreeing, Hammond Jr. said: "I've never felt more like that too. There might be times when we're not doing things but I don't feel like we'll ever stop. We've come to the point where we've been together so long and been through so much that why announce anything besides what we're doing? We're just together."

Hammond Jr previously revealed that a song on his new solo EP "floored" bandmate Julian Casablancas when he first heard it. He will release the solo EP, titled 'AHJ', on October 8. It follows his 2006 debut album 'Yours to Keep' and a second solo LP, 2008's '¿Cómo Te Llama?'. The new release was produced, engineered and mixed by Gus Oberg and recorded in Hammond Jr's own studios in Manhattan and upstate New York. Scroll down to hear 'Rude Customer' now.

First Poster For Christophe Gans' 'Beauty And The Beast' Starring Léa Seydoux

A fairy tale from Christophe Gans, the director behind "Brotherhood of the Wolf" and "Silent Hill," leads the imagination to some vivid places, which might be why we're slightly bummed by the release of the first poster for his "Beauty and the Beast."

Starring Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel, a dream team pair up if there ever was one, the folks involved have long promised a more "modern" spin on the story, and one that will be more faithful to the original story by Madame de Villeneuve and address "the power of dreams and love over materialism and corruption." And that's cool and all good stuff, but this poster—which also gives us our first glimpse of the Beast—is a bit uninspiring, and looks like any number of similar movies from years past. We dare to be proven wrong though.

While there is no stateside home yet, "Beauty and the Beast" opens in France on February 12, 2014. Poster below.

In Honor of Goop's Birthday, A Collection of Some of Her Most Ridiculous Quotes

Confession: We actually love Gwyneth Paltrow. She is perfect and beautiful and lives a life of kale and cashmere the rest of us can only dream about. Is it a little frustrating sometimes? Yes. Are we probably just jealous? Also yes.

But, in addition to all her great GOOP-y advice, healthy recipes, and excellent style, there is another side of Gwyneth that can be really ridiculous. Let's just call it Gwynish. Because it's not really her, we're convinced — she's definitely a lovely person who just says ridiculous things sometimes. Today is Gwyneth's birthday (happy 41st!), and because Gwynish is her slightly off, Sliding Doors twin sister, it is also Gwynish's birthday. And we have decided to celebrate with a collection of her most out-there quotes.

  • "I love being. There's so much wisdom in it. You wake up in the morning and you think, 'hey, isn't it great just being?'"

What do you think is Gwyneth's most cringe-worthy quote, ONTD?

Watch and Listen to The Lumineers Perform “Gale Song” from the Catching Fire Soundtrack, a radio station in Seattle, posted the audio to The Lumineers new song, “Gale Song”, which will be included on the Catching Fire soundtrack.

"It’s not every day you get to use the phrase “world exclusive”, but that’s truly what The Lumineers were cool enough to suprise us with during our complete broadcast of their live set at Marymoor Park last Saturday. While initially it went unknown whether the song debuted in their encore was to be featured on their new album or was simply a something the band had drummed up while on tour, we can now confirm the track will appear on the forthcoming Hunger Games:Catching Fire soundtrack alongside The National, Coldplay, and Imagine Dragons, announced today. Bearing the title “Gale Song” the tune is a fragile and soft, slow builder which grows to an immense emotional peak before settling once again. If it’s any indication of The Lumineers direction, the band are certianly set reprise themselves with one of the most heartfelt records of the year."
