Macklemore: I Wouldn't Have Been as Successful If I Were Black

Before he was basically the biggest rapper in the country, with back-to-back No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us"), and another Top 20 track (the treacly gay-equality anthem "Same Love"), rapper Ben "Macklemore" Haggerty wrote a song called "White Privilege." (Sample lyrics: "Where's my place in a music that's been taken by my race / Culturally appropriated by the white face.")

You see, Macklemore is the kind of rapper that those in the know would describe as a "white rapper," and he has a lot more to say on the subject in Rolling Stone's recent cover story profile of him:

"If you’re going to be a white dude and do this shit, I think you have to take some level of accountability," Haggerty says. "You have to acknowledge where the art came from, where it is today, how you’re benefiting from it. At the very least, just bringing up those points and acknowledging that, yes, I understand my privilege, I understand how it works for me in society, and how it works for me in 2013 with the success that The Heist has had."

"We made a great album," he continues, "but I do think we have benefited from being white and the media grabbing on to something. A song like ‘Thrift Shop’ was safe enough for the kids. It was like, ‘This is music that my mom likes and that I can like as a teenager,’ and even though I’m cussing my ass off in the song, the fact that I’m a white guy, parents feel safe. They let their six-year-olds listen to it. I mean it’s just…it’s different. And would that success have been the same if I would have been a black dude? I think the answer is no."

I think first congratulations are due to Macklemore for self-congratulating so articulately.

Are Fictional Love Triangles Hurting Young Adult Readers?

Spoiler alert for Twilight, The Hunger Games, and The Mortal Instruments

On August 21, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of young adults will have a new OTP.

If your homepage isn’t bookmarked to Tumblr, you don’t know that OTP stands for “One True Pairing,” or in a fandom (a group of individuals who all enjoy a book, movie or television series), the couple OF ALL COUPLES. Your OTP might be the two characters you KNOW belong together, though their relationship has yet to take hold (think Jim and Pam of The Office before the fourth season, or Ron and Hermione of Harry Potter). Your OTP might not have a chance in hell of ending up together, but you’ll ship (or root for – please keep up) them, through thick and thin.

This new OTP is not so new – You might have shipped them since 2008. That was the year City of Bones, the first book in The Mortal Instruments series, was released. On August 21, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones will open in theaters. Lily Collins of “The Blind Side” and “Mirror Mirror” stars as Clary Fray a teenager who finds herself thrust into a world of demons and magic when her mother is kidnapped by the father she thought died in her childhood … a father who is hell-bent on the destruction of life as Clary knows it.

Or, more than likely, our new Katniss or Bella.

Gabby Douglas leaves Chow's Gym, moves to L.A.

The sports relationship between a Chinese-born, Iowa-based coach and the Virginia-raised gymnast he guided to an historic all-around gold medal at the Olympics has ended.

Gabrielle Douglas, who became the first African-American to capture the sport’s most coveted championship, blossomed under the wing of Liang Chow, the owner of Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines.

Douglas has moved to Los Angeles to join her family, leaving those who follow the star coach and the 17-year-old celebrity to wonder what it could mean for a bid by Douglas to compete in the 2016 Games.

No matter what the future holds for both, it appears unlikely Douglas will call Chow coach again.

“At this point, I don’t think so,” said Liwen Zhuang, Chow’s wife and co-owner of the training facility. “No.”

Veterans protest "The Butler" due to Jane Fonda; theatre refuses to show film

Jane Fonda was famous for her anti-Vietnam War activism in the early 1970s -- one particular visit to Vietnam earned her the nickname "Hanoi Jane" -- a past that doesn't sit well with Ike Boutwell, the owner of the Movie Palace in Elizabethtown, Ky.

Boutwell, a Korean War veteran who trained Vietnam War pilots, refuses to show "Lee Daniels' The Butler" at his theater because it stars the 75-year-old actress.

“I trained hundreds of pilots to fly, many of whom Ms. Fonda clapped and cheered as they were shot down,” Boutwell told the News-Enterprise. “Our Constitution only mentions three crimes. Treason is one. That’s aid and comfort to the enemy.”

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Title Revealed

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Officially Titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Taking a cue from the original Disneyland theme park attraction upon which it's based, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is officially titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. No story details have been released, but Johnny Depp is confirmed to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (the Oscar-winning duo behind the international thriller Kon-Tiki) confirmed the title today during an interview with This Is Infamous.

Both directors were said to be genuinely enthused about the upcoming sequel, though they weren't able to offer any more insight into the film. They did, however, reveal that this latest chapter will serve as a stand-alone adventure while tying into the overall mythology of the franchise as it currently stands.

The infamous line "Dead Men Tell No Tales" has been the introduction on the Pirates ride at Disneyland since it first debuted in 1967.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales comes to theaters July 10th, 2015 and stars Johnny Depp. The film is directed by Espen Sandberg, Joachim Rønning.

Why Do We Care About Pop Stars' Hair?

Why Do We Care

It’s hard to remember now, but Rihanna’s superstardom wasn’t always assured. Before 2007, she lacked an identity and sound that set her apart from the other one-name would-be divas who’ve since fallen off the charts. But that summer, she released “Umbrella,” Good Girl Gone Bad, and got a haircut that changed everything.

Stylist Ursula Stephen first met Rihanna on the set of her “Unfaithful” music video the year before. The pop star’s usual stylist wasn’t available, so Stephen was called to fill in. Rihanna’s hair at the time was typical diva fare: long and beautiful, perfect for billowing in wind machines. Stephen calls the look “conveyor belt.”

Ariana Grande Dating The Wanted's Nathan Sykes!

Ariana Grande and Nathan Sykes are taking their chemistry from the studio to the streets! The Victorious actress, 20, and the Wanted singer, 20 -- who just released a duet, "Almost Is Never Enough," for the movie The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones -- are dating, sources confirm to Us Weekly.

"It's very, very new," one insider tells Us of the romance, noting that Grande and Sykes have met several times but started dating only recently. Adds another source: "Nate sends her flowers everyday."

Grande -- known to many fans as Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon's Victorious, iCarly, and Sam & Cat -- was most recently linked to YouTube star Jai Brooks of the Janoskians. They split in February but reunited shortly thereafter, only to break up again this summer. She also made headlines earlier this month when she posted a photo of Justin Bieber kissing her cheek.

Bieber, though, is just a pal. "Everyone, girls are allowed to be friends with guys," she tweeted to her 8.7 million followers when Beliebers started freaking out over the pic. "I'm a lady. Chill out."

Her relationship with Sykes is a different story. Speaking about the Wanted singer in an interview with MTV News recently, Grande couldn't help but gush about how great it was to work with him on "Almost Is Never Enough," which will appear on her upcoming album Yours Truly.

"Nathan just sang the hell out of it. I thought it was Brian McKnight. I'm like, 'Who is this?' Honestly, I wasn't expecting it. I didn't know he had that in him," she said. "I saw him perform live on one of the radio shows that we were at together, and I was like, 'Damn, he can sing.' This song I think will pleasantly surprise a lot of people. It's very beautiful and very emotional and I love, love, love what Nathan did to it. It was a great, great, great surprise."

Jenelle's Heroin Charges Dropped But She's Arrested After A Surprise Drug Test

Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans made a visit to her home-away-from-home, the Brunswick County Courthouse, this morning to face just some of the many charges against her.

Unfortunately for Jenelle, she decided to get “High! High!” (as Babs would say) before her court date, causing her to fail an impromptu drug test given to her during the hearing.

fter testing dirty, the judge threw the book at Jenelle, sentencing her to a few days in the slammer. The good news is that Jenelle’s drug charges stemming from the April 23 arrest (including the assault charges for smacking down husband Courtland Rogers, and possession of Percocets) were dropped. UPDATED: Dustin also reveals that that Jenelle’s heroin possession/intent to sell charges were also dropped

“Yes its true. Jenelle plead to possession of drug paraphernalia,” Dustin Sullivan explains. “All other charges were dismissed. She was given 18 months unsupervised probation. However, the judge drug tested her and she tested positive for marijuana. Judge gave her 48 hours in jail for testing positive. She will be released Wednesday morning at 9:30.”

Cinema's Greatest Effects Shots Picked By Hollywood's Top VFX Specialists

The Cityscape - Metropolis

Selected by Simon Stanley-Clamp. A director at London-based effects house Cinesite, Simon Stanley-Clamp has Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, John Carter, and, most recently, World War Z and Iron Man 3 on his resume. He was charged with the Scorpioch sequence in Clash Of The Titans and supervised 270 effects shots on Duncan Jones's Moon, creating robot helper Gerty among other things.

"Fritz Lang's Metropolis is a favourite of mine. The way they made it look busy, and silly things like the flying cars – I know they weren't cars – and multi-layered streets, flyovers and these biplanes with propellers flying around this bizarre cityscape. It was busy, there were lots of things to look at and then the camera is also flying through it. I'm a big sci-fi geek. I remember seeing Dark Star and Silent Running as a teenager at a 3am double-bill in the West End with my best friend, and strangely, 20 years on, they turned out to be a constant reference on Moon. I'm also sucker for any kind of long camerawork, long visual effect, that Hitchcock continuous camera, slow-moving seamless thing because it's an amazing example of everybody working together from director and actors through to stage manager. I love the Powers Of Ten opening shot in Contact where the camera flies down from space and out of the eye, because the camera carries on moving and moving. You nudge your friend and say, 'They haven't cut yet!'"

Everything You Need to Know About Katy Perry's 'PRISM'

After the historic run that Katy Perry's 2010 album Teenage Dream had, the SoCal pop star's upcoming album, Prism (October 22), has a lot to live up to.

Teenage Dream debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced six Top 10 singles. It even delivered five No. 1 singles, making Katy the second musician ever (besides Michael Jackson!) to claim that title. So, you know, no pressure.

After releasing the album's reissue (Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection), Katy went off the grid for a bit. During that time she got divorced from Russell Brand (sad face), died her hair back to black, got a little spiritual and started hooking up with John Mayer. A lot has changed. And we'll hear that play out on Prism.

The album's anthemic first single, "Roar," arrived in early August and sold 557,000 units its first week (earning Katy's highest-selling first week ever). But can Prism break Teenage Dream records? We'll find out soon. In the meantime, here are five things we know for sure about the upcoming album.

The Cali girl’s got a slick electro-R&B jam called “Cali Love,” produced by Mark J. Feist (who also helmed Destiny’s Child‘s “Emotion.”) The new cut conjures all shades of Ciara‘s super turnt up latest effort, a la “Backseat Love”: “That California sun / Bring that West Coast love / Won’t you come and get some?” the “Wild Heart” songstress urges. Another Hesitation Marks leak - "Find My Way" + Trent Reznor interview

Nine Inch Nails have been steadily leaking new tracks from their upcoming comeback record Hesitation Marks – next to grace our ears is the undulating, sample-heavy “Find My Way,” which the band’s been playing live since their first reunited tour date at Japan’s Fuji Rocks Festival. We loved the bootlegs of this track and are excited to hear a recorded (if radio-ripped) version – it somehow manages to be hyper-minimalist, more of the idea of a song than a song, like a skeleton or building foundation, whilst simultaneously incorporating a plethora of different instruments and samples.

'Crazy Eyes' From 'Orange Is The New Black' Talks Flirting, Jodie Foster And That Infamous Scene

In the terrific Netflix drama "Orange Is the New Black," Crazy Eyes Suzanne more than lived up to her name.

In early episodes of the show's first season, her eyes often displayed an almost bewildering intensity. It wasn't always easy to figure out what she was thinking, but you always knew she was thinking those thoughts with ferocious commitment and energy.

If you haven't seen the show yet -- and trust me, you really should -- it's not giving away too much to reveal that Crazy Eyes, whose given name is Suzanne, tried hard to seduce new inmate Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) when she first arrived at the Litchfield Correctional Facility. When Piper turned her fellow inmate down, well, let's just say say Crazy Eyes Suzanne didn't take it well.

crazy eyes

In a lesser drama, Suzanne would have remained a wild card -- a comic-relief character who'd occasionally appear in Piper's orbit to display menacing or slightly clueless behavior. But as I wrote recently, the raucous, irreverent and moving "Orange Is the New Black" didn't take long to reveal that it was just as interested in at least a dozen other inmates. Piper's story was important to Season 1's narrative arc, but it was just one of many threads. One of many things that made "Orange's" debut season stand out was its commitment to showing the complexities, virtues and vulnerabilities of a whole constellation of women, Suzanne included.

SNL (Probably) Adding More White People

This ties in with the more recently released pictures showing the Daleks in what many are speculating are scenes from the Time War.

Warning: contains moderate Breaking Bad spoilers; don't read on if you aren't up to speed with the latest episode

In one of the busiest sessions of this year's Edinburgh TV festival, Breaking Bad showrunner Vince Gilligan was interviewed by the Guardian's Charlie Brooker on stage, with Laura Fraser, who plays Lydia in the final season, part of an enthusiastic audience. Gilligan is notoriously tight-lipped on spoilers and gave nothing away about how Walter White's journey will end, nor did he reveal much more about the mooted Saul Goodman spin-off, other than to say, "Knock on wood, I have a good feeling about it." Gilligan did, however, reveal a number of BB anecdotes that were tastier than a Los Pollos Hermanos bargain bucket.

35 Signs You’ve Been Watching Too Much ‘Doctor Who’

I was first introduced to Doctor Who when I was in high school — wanting to procrastinate from an array of calculus equations and Renaissance art history write-ups, I searched the television for a worthy distraction. Punching random numbers into the clicker, I stumbled upon a previously unknown television station: BBC America.

Currently occupying the screen is a lanky gentleman in a long brown coat. He is handsome. He has a beautiful blonde companion. He has sexy hair. He is negotiating with what appears to be a plunger toting silver-studded robot on why not to blow up Earth. He is getting annoyed with the constant echoes of EXTERMINATE!!! EXTERMINATE!!!, but maintains his obvious swag. This. Is. AMAZING!!! I refuse to blink in fear of missing something. My heart is racing. My cat Purrrfessor, frustrated, leaves when he realizes I have replaced petting him with groveling in front of television.

Of course, the actor was David Tennant and his companion was Billie Piper, both of whom ended up being the heroes of my remaining high school years. Doctor Who has progressed much since then – Matt Smith became the quirky eleventh Doctor, Karen Gillan charmed the world with her ginger feistiness, and Stephen Moffat (aka the man who makes millions of fangirls cry) became the show’s widely praised frontrunner – among many other noteworthy things. To this day, I’m still a hardcore Whovian (much to the chagrin of some of my friends) and here’s a list to see if you are, too:

Fans Petition Warner Bros. to Remove Ben Affleck as Batman

Well, that didn’t take long.

Fans rained a torrent of criticism down upon the internet just minutes after Warner Bros. announced it had cast Ben Affleck as the next Batman in its upcoming Batman vs. Superman tentpole, with more than 30 petitions springing up on to remove the actor overnight.

With vitriol oddly reminiscent of the backlash to Heath Ledger’s casting as the Joker in 2008′s “The Dark Knight,” fans took to the web to condemn everything from Affleck’s star power to his acting chops.

“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he wont’ do the role justice,” said one anti-Affleck petition that drew 3,200 signatures. Another has over 6,000 signatures.

“He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman.”

John Mayer Aiming for No. 2 Debut on Billboard 200

John Mayer is on course for a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week with his new album "Paradise Valley." Industry sources suggest the set -- his sixth studio effort -- might sell around 150,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Aug. 25.

The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 28.

He will likely be blocked from the top slot by the reigning chart champ, Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party." The album debuted at No. 1 this week with 528,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Even if "Crash My Party" erodes by 70% in its second week, it would still sell more than what Mayer is projected to move. (The last three No. 1-debuting albums all fell by between 63% and 68% in their second week. Bryan's last album, the No. 1-starting "Spring Break… Here to Party," dropped by 59% in its second frame.)

All of Mayer's five previous studio sets have reached the top 10, and the last two have bowed at No. 1. His last effort, 2012's "Born and Raised," opened with 219,000 just over a year ago. Previous to that, 2009's "Battle Studies" launched with 286,000.

Mayer has additionally clocked a top 10 with the live album "Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles," which reached No. 5 in 2008.

Other albums eyeing big bows on next week's chart include TGT (the superstar trio of Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank) with its debut set "3 Kings" (65,000 or so) and Jimmy Buffett's "Songs From St. Somewhere" (55,000).

Kendra Wilkinson considers open marriage with husband Hank Baskett in reality show trailer:

"I shouldn't be married"

Are Kendra Wilkinson and husband Hank Baskett considering an unconventional approach to their marriage?

In the trailer for the second season of Wilkinson's WE tv reality show, "Kendra On Top," the 28-year-old former Playboy model wonders if she should open her marriage with Baskett. "I shouldn't even be married," Wilkinson tells Baskett. He responds, that the couple should "just be single and live together.""You're the one who took off with it," Baskett replies.

Later in the clip, Wilkinson seems on the brink of going for it. "If I want to have one night of freesom, I'm going to do it," she says. "I'm a grown a-woman." Will Wilkinson and Baskett go through with it? Viewers will have to wait for the premiere, on September 13. "So you're asking for an open marriage?" Kendra says. "I've been waiting for this day my whole life!" Wilkinson seems to give the idea more though when she runs into an ex-boyfriend at the gym. "You're the one who brought up open marriage," she says while lying in bed with Baskett.

What do you think about open marriages, ONTD?

Nicki Minaj DISSES Iggy Azalea in new song!?

IT'S ON! Nicki Minaj DISSES Iggy Azalea in Newly-Released Swizz Beatz' Single "Hands Up"

Nicki Minaj, who in the beginning of her mainstream career and criticized by rap legend Lil Kim - is now taking shots at up and coming Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, who is also starting to make some big moves in the music industry having signed a moneymaking deal with Island Def Jam just a few months ago and is already booking tour opening slots with the likes of popstar giants Beyoncé and Katy Perry. Threatened yet?

But it seems like Minaj has been at it for a little longer as she has been gradually and reportedly subtweeting the newcomer Azalea after a 3-year-old tweet was recovered by some of Minaj's fans (really?) where Iggy was apparently hinting Nicki hadn't been rapping 100% live on her 2010 BET Awards performance. Especially when Iggy has praised Minaj continuously and publicly every time she is asked about other female rappers in most of her interviews even declaring she would love to collaborate with the current "rap queen" (here's another fun fact: Iggy raps "Nicki paved the way" in the track "Treasure Island" of her 2011 debut mixtape.)

TV Ratings: 'Teen Wolf' Summer Finale Rises for MTV

MTV's Teen Wolf closed out the first half of its third season up in the ratings.

Monday's summer closer averaged 2.1 million total viewers, an improvement from last year's finale, which drew 1.7 million viewers.

For the first half of the season, the 12-episode run averaged 1.9 million viewers, a 200,000 jump from the seasons-one and -two averages, and rose double digits in MTV's core 12-34 demo with a 1.8 rating.

A&E's Longmire, which on Monday aired its penultimate episode of the second season, drew a season high in the adults 25-54 demo with a 1.16 rating.

The one-hour drama — which has yet to be renewed — posted its most watched episode since the May 27 premiere, with 4.1 million viewers, and in the 18-49 demo with a 0.8 rating.

‘Gravity Falls’ Adds Depth to Disney Channel Demo

Disney Channel
made a splash last month with its tentpole telepic “Teen Beach Movie,” following in the fancy footsteps of “High School Musical” as a popcorn hit for the cabler. But the Mouse’s flagship kidvid outlet is coming out of the summer with another strong prospect that has the potential to be an even bigger franchise player for a conglom that prizes its multiplatform properties.

The animated series “Gravity Falls” is an unusual toon animal. It blends broad comedy with mythology-driven storytelling that is provoking “Lost”-like online discussions of clues and cryptograms woven into each episode as part of an unfolding mystery.

The half-hour show revolves around teenage twin brother and sister Dipper (voiced by Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) who are sent to spend the summer with their cantankerous great-uncle Stan (aka “Grunkle Stan”) in the Oregon hamlet of Gravity Falls, where he runs a roadside attraction dubbed the Mystery Shack.

Jason Isaacs, 'Harry Potter' Star: Hollywood Gay Casting 'Ridiculous'

"Harry Potter" star Jason Isaacs thinks that Hollywood's gay casting is nothing short of "ridiculous."

The actor, who played Lucius Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" series, recently spoke with the Telegraph about why gay actors choose to stay in the closet, saying he has a lot of gay friends who remain closeted because of the potential professional backlash.

"If you are a romantic lead, there is a perception -- I don’t know if it is true or not -- that you will no longer be cast as straight people," he told the Telegraph. “Even when casting gay roles, there is a tendency to cast straight people, so they are lauded for their transformation. It’s ridiculous. The notion that a gay actor can’t seem like they are in love with a woman on screen is so patently absurd I can’t believe it still exists.”

'Butler' likely to be No. 1 again as 'Mortal Instruments' disappoints

"The Butler" is on its way to making a tidy profit for the Weinstein Co.

Starring Forest Whitaker as a White House employee who served eight presidents, "Butler" got off to a robust start last weekend, debuting at No. 1 with $24.6 million. The Lee Daniels-directed picture should secure the top spot again during its second weekend in theaters, collecting at least $12 million, according to those who have seen pre-release audience surveys.

Meanwhile, the three new films hitting the box office nationwide are not poised to make much of a splash.

"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," a teen-aimed fantasy flick based on a popular young adult novel, opened Wednesday in an effort to generate positive buzz before the weekend. It doesn't appear that move will pay off, though. The film grossed $3 million on its first day in release and is expected to make a lackluster total of $14 million through Sunday evening.

That means "Mortal Instruments" will likely gross between $8 million and $10 million between Friday and Sunday -- the same amount the British comedy "The World's End" and the horror film "You're Next" are expected to start off with.

In other words: It'll be a tight race for the runner-up position.

If "Mortal Instruments" does not exceed industry projections this weekend, its German financial backer Constantin Film may be particularly disappointed. The company, which spent $60 million to produce the film and another $60 million to market it abroad, is already in pre-production on a sequel set to shoot this fall. Sony Pictures' Screen Gems label, which is distributing the first film in the U.S. this weekend, paid to advertise the movie stateside.

Written by Cassandra Clare, the five-book "Mortal Instruments" series has sold 24 million copies worldwide. But in the wake of the massive success of the "Twilight" franchise, several movies adapted from young adult novels have failed to connect with moviegoers. Though "The Hunger Games" series is a hit, "Beautiful Creatures" and "The Host" tanked at the box office this year.

In the first "Mortal Instruments" movie, Lily Collins plays protagonist Clary Fray, a teenager who discovers she is part of a clan of demon chasers. The film has received by far the worst reviews of any of the weekend's new debuts, notching a 16% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, those who saw the movie Wednesday liked it more than critics, assigning the movie an average grade of B-plus, according to market research firm CinemaScore.

'You're Next' star Sharni Vinson joins the cast of the female 'Expendables'

by Adam Chitwood

Sharni Vinson may not be a name that you’re familiar with just yet, but it will be soon.  The Australian actress leads the excellent new horror film You’re Next in a true breakout role, and now sources confirm to us that Vinson has joined the cast of producer Adi Shankar’s all-female Expendables project.  The untitled film already has Gina Carano and Katee Sackhoff onboard to star, and if you’ve seen Vinson’s work in You’re Next you’ll no doubt agree that she makes an excellent addition to the untitled actioner.  The pic is still being put together with Dutch Southern writing the screenplay, but Vinson’s casting confirms that development is indeed progressing towards an eventual production start-date.
Most recently, Shankar produced a pair of comic book-friendly short films, Dirty Laundry with Thomas Jane and Truth in Journalism with Ryan Kwanten.  He was also an executive producer on last year’s Dredd.

Anna Gunn's Op-Ed for the NY Times: "I Have a Character Issue"

PLAYING Skyler White on the television show “Breaking Bad” for the past five seasons has been one of the most rewarding creative journeys I’ve embarked on as an actor. But the role has also taken me on another kind of journey — one I never would have imagined.

My character, to judge from the popularity of Web sites and Facebook pages devoted to hating her, has become a flash point for many people’s feelings about strong, nonsubmissive, ill-treated women. As the hatred of Skyler blurred into loathing for me as a person, I saw glimpses of an anger that, at first, simply bewildered me.

8 Actresses Who Wrote Complex, Female Roles For Themselves

"Quality roles in studio films are just not available in great numbers for women, period," Joe Reid succinctly wrote for the Tribeca Film Festival's blog in May.

Research backs up his claim: while half of all moviegoers are female, 33 percent of all characters and only 11 percent of protagonists in the top 100 domestic grossing films of 2011 were women. A 2012 study commissioned by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media also found that, "females are not only missing from popular media, [but] when they are on screen, they seem to be there merely for decoration -- not to engage in meaningful or prestigious employment.”

This is bad news for all women who go to see and enjoy watching movies. But it's especially frustrating for actresses looking to play interesting and challenging roles. Because so few roles are available, competition for good parts is fierce. And prospects are even bleaker for actresses who are not thin, white women. As Angela Bassett dryly quipped when asked about future projects in 2012, "I'm a black actress, honey -- what can I tell you but I have no idea what's next for me."

That's why a growing number of actresses are taking matters into their own hands, and writing the dynamic roles they want to play themselves -- on TV as well as film. Here are eight actresses who did just that:

The latest casting addition to James Wan’s Fast and Furious 7 comes by way of Thailand in the form of ass-kicking martial artist Tony Jaa (Ong-bak). The franchise picture will be Jaa’s English-language film debut and his first studio picture. Personally, I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that Jaa would make the transition stateside for a well-deserved shot at a broader viewing audience. Jaa’s role has yet to be revealed as Chris Morgan is still working on the script, but it’s safe to say he’ll mix it up in a fight or two. Will it be against newcomer Ronda Rousey (likely not, since any new faces have a good chance of ending up on the antagonizing side), or one of the heavyweights in Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson? Perhaps (poor) Paul Walker or Tyrese Gibson will have to take him on instead? We’ll have to wait until the film’s scheduled release date of July 11, 2014 to find out. Hit the jump for more.

Pearl Jam release official video for "Mind Your Manners"

Pearl Jam Unleash Explosive 'Mind Your Manners' Video
First clip from 'Lightning Bolt' takes album's title quite literally

Pearl Jam take the title of their October 15th album Lightning Bolt quite literally in their new video for "Mind Your Manners," the LP's first single. The chaotic clip, directed by Danny Clinch, features the band performing before a screen projecting all kind of disasters — lightning bolts, bombs, environmental crises. Some of the animated imagery recalls their 1998 "Do the Evolution" video, though "Mind Your Manners" alludes to tragedies like September 11th, global warming and Hurricane Sandy while Eddie Vedder expresses his frustrations, singing, "Tried my patience/Patience tried."

Pearl Jam will begin a North American tour in October and will be headlining Voodoo Fest in New Orleans in November.

Personally, I can't wait for the new album and upcoming tour. They are still one of the best rock bands out there.

Ben Affleck As Batman: Hollywood's Best Reactions

The cat's out of the bag, bat-fans. Ben Affleck will don the cowl for 2015's Man of Steel follow-up, the first time Batman and Superman will be united on the big screen.

Director Zack Snyder is describing Affleck's Batman as "older and wiser" than Henry Cavill's Clark Kent (Affleck is 11 years Cavill's senior) and says he "bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain[s] the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne."

Hollywood fans on Twitter have their own take on the Argo Oscar winner tackling yet another superhero role after 2003's Daredevil and 2006's Hollywoodland.

As for Affleck, he has yet to tweet. But a Ben Affleck Batman parody Twitter account popped up and quickly amassed 12,000 followers. It's been sending messages worthy of a superhero: "I am proud to serve the people of Gotham. And the people are proud to have me."

Khloe and Lamar's Marriage Crisis Triggered By Drug Use

The marriage of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom is in crisis, and TMZ has learned ... the core reason is hardcore drug abuse.

Multiple sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... Lamar has had a problem for 2 years.  It got so bad, last August Khloe pressured Lamar to go to rehab.  Lamar went to a facility in San Diego, but he was so resistant Khloe hired private investigators to secretly stand guard at the rehab place to make sure he didn't leave.  The P.I.s stood guard 24/7.

Our sources say Lamar constantly threatened to leave and Khloe made several visits to prevail upon him to stay.  We're told after 3 weeks, Lamar left for good.

We're told Lamar actually stayed clean once he left rehab and was able to play well for the Clippers this past season.  But when the season was over, sources say Lamar slipped deep back into hardcore recreational drugs.

As for reports that Lamar was cheating recently, we're told Khloe is convinced it happened, and she feels she's been hit with a double whammy ... but drugs are the main problem.

As for divorce ... neither Khloe nor Lamar has contacted a lawyer.  As one source put it, "Khloe is more concerned about saving Lamar than ending her marriage."

We're told the situation has become dire.  Sources tell us ... within the last 2 days, the entire family staged an intervention, trying to convince Lamar to go back to rehab, but he wouldn't have any of it.

In fact, on Wednesday morning, right after the failed intervention, Khloe threw Lamar out of the house and as you see from the pic (above), one of Lamar's friends is loading Lamar's stuff in his car as Lamar watches.

We attempted to reach Lamar for comment ... so far, no word back.

Britney Spears Paid £19m for Las Vegas Concerts

Pop singer Britney Spears has insisted on staying in two 'fantasy palaces' during her £19m stint in Las Vegas.

To feel more at home, she has asked bosses at Planet Hollywood to redecorate her £6,500-a-night hotel suite with an antique king-size four-poster bed.

The former X Factor US judge has also requested a £16m mansion with housekeeper and nanny so she can stay in secluded luxury with her sons Sean and Jayden.

A source at the Vegas resort where Spears will be a resident performer in November told the Daily Star: "She doesn't want her boys exposed to the wild party scenes on the Vegas Strip.

"We are renting a secluded seven-bedroom property to keep her kids away from Sin City's excesses."

The 31-year-old is reportedly being paid £19.2m for her two eight-week stints in Las Vegas.

A booking agent commented: "Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart and Celine Dion all perform annual residencies in Vegas but I don't think anyone - even Sinatra or Elvis - has ever been treated so extravagantly."

Spears is one of the most financially successful pop stars in the world. She made £43.4m on her last tour and received a pay cheque of £10m for her role on the X Factor.

However, the singer had a very public meltdown in 2007, and a judge gave Jamie, Spears father, control of her fortune and almost every other aspect of her life.

Spears has not publicly revealed the nature of the psychiatric and drug problems that have led to repeated stints in rehab.

Her father has been in charge of her affairs for almost five years.

According to TMZ, the star spent around half of her £8.9m allowance back in 2012 on a wide range of items, including £2,1700 on Christmas lights.

The 31-year-old singer and mother of two decided not to feature in the X-Factor's next season, which would have conflicted with tour preparations.

She recently recorded a song, Ooh La La, for Smurfs 2, which featured her two sons. Spears is currently working on her eighth studio masterpiece album, for release later this year.

MGMT Bring More Cowbell to 'Letterman'

MGMT put a different spin on "more cowbell" last night on the Late Show With David Letterman, where Andrew Van Wyngarden thunked intermittently on an oversized version bearing the slogan "Be Aware" throughout the group's performance of "Your Life Is a Lie." The rest of the six-piece band churned along behind him, stopping and starting proficiently on the song from the group's upcoming album MGMT, which is due out Sept. 17.
