Ellie Goulding: I beat Lady Gaga once, I’ll beat her again

Ellie Goulding has warned Lady Gaga she beat her once and she’ll beat her again.

While the world focuses on the chart battle between Gaga and Katy Perry, the English songstress has come out of the woodwork to spoil the party and is currently beating Lady G’s comeback single Applause to No.1 in the UK charts with her own dance ditty Burn.

Nas & J.Cole cover Vibe Magazine + interview and photoshoot

J. Cole just might’ve let Nas down again. Here in Manhattan’s Neo Studios, as the lanky Fayetteville, N.C., rhymer sways and swaggers for this fashion photo shoot, he requests his idol Tupac’s seething Makaveli album to color the ambience. Meanwhile, hidden behind a collapsible wall, another one of his rap heroes, Nas, is preparing for the camera’s scrutiny, changing into a nostalgic ensemble that could’ve been plucked from Queens, N.Y.’s famed Coliseum street mall in ‘95. In both physical and spiritual forms, hip-hop legends of yesterday and tomorrow are lording the space. And then it happens.

This little nigga named Nas thinks he live like me.

Tupac’s infamous challenge from “Against All Odds” momentarily wraps the studio in discomfort. It’s like watching an X-rated movie scene with your parents. “Nah, turn that off,” says Cole, 28, flashing a sheepish smile. He opts for the less badass All Eyez on Me instead. “I didn’t realize.”

Still, no awkward DJing can quell the bromancing shared by Jermaine Cole and his prophyte Nasir Jones today, a respect jelled in wax on “Let Nas Down,” Cole’s conflicted explanation for pandering to radio standards. Just days before this shoot, the mellow vet responded with his own genuine endorsing remix, knighting Jay-Z’s star student as a young rap valedictorian. Yet, the coronation had already been earned, thanks in part to J. Cole’s moody sophomore LP, Born Sinner, which outpaced its release date rival Kanye West’s Yeezus by scoring No. 1 in it’s third week on Billboard charts on its way to RIAA Gold Certification. Nas’ pen is still Ginsu-sharp as well. The impossibly 39-year-old face of Hennessy’s Wild Rabbit campaign is already antsy about diving into his 11th solo studio album, the follow-up to last year’s renaissance project Life Is Good.

“I told you before I need some tracks—your shit’s tight,” Nas insists to Cole. ‘Pac has been silenced, and the two rap geniuses now are plopped on a black leather couch in the studio’s posterior. “We need to do more shit [together] ‘cause it just makes you sharper as an MC.” They trade schedules for a hypothetical future studio session. But today, the meticulous lyricists have assembled to talk the art of rhyme, from conception to the vocal booth. It was written, and here, it is told.

Lady Gaga Fans Offer Oral Sex on Craigslist For Chance to Meet Her

So, this might be the most blatant attempt to sell music ever: Lady Gaga just tweeted she'll meet with "the 2 fans w/ the most purchase/gift screenshots" of "Applause," her latest single and an instant drag queen anthem. And in turn, this might be the most revolting attempt to win a contest ever: Fans are offering sexual favors on Craiglist to anyone who demonstrates that they purchased "Applause."

To be precise, one 21-year-old man in Los Angeles is "offering blow jobs that wil make you go GAGA" if you prove to him "you have purchased Lady Gaga's new single 'Applause' on iTunes!!!" Yes, that means for the low, low price of $1.29, you can receive oral sex in Los Angeles. Big savings, guys.

Another 21-year-old man in Miami posted a similar offer on Craigslist, but this guy was a little more discriminating. He specified that not only must you buy the Gaga single to get oral sex, but you have to be "STD free" to boot. And it gets more restrictive than that: He specified "no anal" would be involved under any circumstances. Miami men: So much more straight-laced than L.A. dudes.

Honestly, the whole thing seems circumspect to us. Aside from wondering if anyone would actually go this far, you have to figure the time commitment involved in this proposition is almost prohibitive in itself. Some fan will easily dole out enough dough to buy at least 100 copies of "Applause," so you'd need to complete (or at least promise) more than a hundred sexual favors just to keep competitive in this contest. And honestly, who has time for that?

Liam Payne brands Channel 4 documentary "bulls**t"

One Direction's Liam Payne has reacted angrily to Channel 4's documentary about the band's fans.

Crazy About One Direction, shown last night (August 15), gave an insight into some of the lengths fans will go to for the 'Little Things' singers.

Taking to Twitter today, Payne said that the This Is Us stars "couldn't give a f**k" about the program, and branded the documentary "bulls**t".

The 19-year-old, whose bandmates are Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, said: "Just so all of you know we love you guys and we know how dedicated you are and tbh we can't believe it that you gus [sic] spend all you time on us.

"We couldn't give a f**k what any documentary says there dramatised for entertainment and full of bulls**t anyway we all know...How hard you work for us and see it everyday at our shows.

"Let's all take a step back and think about what we/you have all achieved..."

The documentary also received a negative reaction from some of the band's followers, who said that the program did not give an accurate representation of them.

Gay bullying inspires composer David Del Tredici's 'Bullycide'

You can’t seemingly find a more insider composer than David Del Tredici, whose “Bullycide” was commissioned by La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest and will have its premiere Friday night in Sherwood Auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

He’s won a Pulitzer Prize and been composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic. He’s on the faculty of City College of New York and is a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He has been, in his music, obsessed with “Alice in Wonderland.” “Paul Revere” has been a subject of interest. He is very good at dazzling audiences.

In the last few years, Del Tredici writes in his program note for “Bullycide,” it has been his mission “to create a body of musical compositions that unambiguously celebrate the gay experience — happy, sad, horrible, or bizarre.”

“Bullycide,” which is a piano sextet, is sad. The inspiration is the suicide of persecuted gay teenagers. The model for the composition is Schubert’s “Trout” quintet, although Del Tredici, who will always choose more over less, adds an extra violin.

“Bullycide” will sit Friday beside two more premieres, both by former composers-in-residence of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The works are Steven Stucky’s Violin Sonata (for violinist Cho-Liang Lin and pianist Jon Kimura Parker) and John Harbison’s “Crossroads,” a setting of poems by Louis Glück for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble which will feature Jennifer Johnson Cano as soloist.

Mariah Carey doesn't wear anything twice

Mariah Carey's husband has revealed a big secret about the star, she won't wear anything twice. Carey's husband Nick Cannon revealed he has hardly any room to store his clothes at home as a result of his wife's vast wardrobe.

"(Carey) has all the closet space, so all my stuff is in the corner pushed together!" he told Life & Style magazine.

"I wish I had the most closet space because I probably have more clothes than she does because that's someone who doesn't wear anything twice."

Cannon is the host of America's Got Talent and discussed his wife's wardrobe habits while recently in New York City for the results show. The star joked he's not quite sure what Carey does with the items she's worn, but suspects they are stored elsewhere.

"It rotates through her closet. Then it goes into an archive or she'll give it to a charity, museum, or something like that," he said. "Me? I got to wear my stuff again, so I need the closet space."

Carey has recently been stepping out in an assortment of bling slings following a shoulder injury. The singer has wowed at red carpet events sporting feathered and studded looks wrapped around her injury.

THR: Katy Perry's Roar projected to hit 525,000 within the single's first week of release.

In three days, the pop star has sold over 272,000 digital songs and is projected to hit 525,000 within the single's first week of release. Katy Perry's new single "Roar" marks a career milestone for the pop singer. The ferocious mid-tempo track, which hit digital retailers at midnight on Aug. 12, has already sold 272,000 digital songs, and "Roar" is on target to move 525,000 in its first week of release, surpassing Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines.

In addition, "Roar" claims the biggest digital song debut of 2013, surpassing One Direction's "Best Song Ever," which tallied 322,000 for the week ending July 28.

The song marks a career best for Perry. Although she hit the ground running just as strongly with her previous album, 2010's Teenage Dream -- a release that would yield five No. 1 singles, a record for a female artist -- the biggest digital track from that cycle was "Firework" with 509,000 unit sales for the week ending Dec. 26, 2010. Perry's biggest digital song debut to date was 2012's "Part of Me," which moved 411,000 its first week out, according to Perry's label, Capitol Music Group.

"Roar" inched onto the Billboard Hot 100 after it leaked on Aug. 10 and is expected to topple Thicke's "Blurred Lines" from the top spot on next week's chart, which factors sales and airplay.

It all bodes for a promising start to the Prism rollout. Perry's third album is slated for release on Oct. 22.

After her breakup with co-star Topher Grace, Prepon started dating her castmate Danny Masterson's brother Christopher, also an actor (you may remember him as the oldest brother on Malcolm in the Middle). The Mastersons were raised into Scientology, and Laura herself converted as a result of her relationship.
Prepon and Masterson broke up last year(dated article), but she's still spotted going to the LA Scientology Center all the time.  Laura doesn't talk about Scientology in interviews, probably because she's worried it will affect her career.

A small snippet I found on how she got involved.

Happy 55th Birthday, Madonna!

Today — August 16,— is the 55th birthday of the Queen of Everything: Madonna.

I don’t really need to delve into how or why Madonna will forever own the throne in pop, as many a talented writer will say all that through various listicles, thinkpieces and fanatical tweets over the next few days.

The important thing is this: At 55 years old, 30 years deep into her career, Madonna — MDNA, M-Dolla, Dita, Esther the Kabbalah Kween — still reigns supreme. The MDNA Tour alone, the highest grossing tour of 2012, is proof that the Material Girl has the fiery spirit, determination, talent, passion and kale-fueled vascularity to run laps around the pop princesses half her age — literally. (The accompanying DVD, by the way, is an actual work of art.)

She exists as a symbol of true fearlessness, self-expression and tireless passion. She’s the ultimate pop star. The eternal inspiration. The bourgeoisie and the rebel. The Master of Reinvention. The Idol. The Icon. She is the Queen of Pop.

As Britney breathlessly explained to Rolling Stone while honoring her as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time: “Madonna has this thing about her that you can’t explain — the thing that makes somebody a star.”

Happy birthday, Madonna. We love you.

Orson Scott Card says racist shit. Again.

Looks like "Ender's Game" author Orson Scott Card is in hot water yet again.

Last time around, Card was criticized for saying that "there are no laws left standing that discriminate against gay couples" and suggesting that being gay is a choice. He also expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage, saying "I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.”

Now, as Slate's Dave Weigel points out, comments Card made in a May blog post about President Obama have shocked the internet community.

"Obama is, by character and preference, a dictator," Card wrote before comparing the President of the United States to Adolf Hitler.

Although his theories may seem shocking, Card is hardly the first person to suggest Obama has a secret army. Earlier this year, Gun Owners of America president Larry Pratt suggested that Obama wanted a "civilian force equal in strength to the military."

Jennette McCurdy: I Was a Teenage Hashtag

Former iCarly star Jennette McCurdy, 21, wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal about the ups and downs of the fame and attention that comes with growing up as a tween star.

"I wanted to act since I was six years old, after seeing “Star Wars,” but my goals were more “wear a sweet costume and pretend to be cool” than “be famous.” So the fact that I was cast in the Nickelodeon sitcom “iCarly” at age 14 and catapulted into tween stardom was both an exciting and unexpected journey.

When “iCarly” first started growing in popularity back in 2007, my castmates and I quickly felt the swell in attention. I started getting invited to movie premieres, designers were sending me clothes, old friends were reaching out, and I could no longer go to a public place without getting asked for a picture or an autograph. It was all pretty cool. At the time I didn’t realize I was losing myself, but I was.

Somewhere in 2009, the show hit a really sweet spot in its success and the ratings were huge. “iCarly” was watched in millions of households on a daily basis, and there were constant reminders of that fact in things like network “congratulations” gifts of Gucci bags (I didn’t even know who or what Gucci was) or being escorted from a water park with my castmate because of danger issues caused by the overwhelming crowd of fans.

As the show grew in success, so did my desire to get back to a private life. I started feeling like I was always on my guard, always looking for someone sneakily taking a picture or wondering what favor someone was going to ask for when they sent me a seemingly friendly “just checking in” text. It seemed everywhere I went, someone (professional or personal) wanted or needed something from me. It was as if I made a deal with the mob in some cheesy, old movie. I was no longer in control. People had expectations of me. My job was simple: do everything anyone around me wanted and smile doing it.Collapse )

Papoose Came Out To Play, Releases 'Control' Freestyle

Kendrick Lamar 'Ain't The King,' Papoose Says On Combative 'Control' Freestyle

Brooklyn MC had previously said he and Kendrick were on the 'same page,' but it doesn't look that way on his new track.

Just a couple of months ago Papoose let the world know that he andKendrick Lamar were on the "same page," but on Thursday night the Brooklyn MC ripped that page out of his rhyme book and sent lyrical shots directly at the California MC.

Like Joell Ortiz, Grafh, Ransom, Fred the Godson and a number of other New York spitters, Pap took exception to K-Dot's "Control" verse. While most of the "Control" responses addressed Lamar's "king of New York" line and his competitive boast in a non-threatening way, Pap's freestyle is way more combative. "Tell Kendrick and TDE to lay off the PCP," he starts before challenging his manhood.

Gia Allemand's Mother Speaks Out After Bachelor Star's Death of Apparent Suicide

In the days since Bachelor alum Gia Allemand died of an apparent suicide on Aug. 14, fans and friends alike have searched for answers about what led to the 29-year-old reality star's shocking death. Now, Allemand's mother, Donna Micheletti, is stepping forward for the first time to set the record straight about the rumors surrounding her daughter's last days.

"The family and close friends of Gia Allemand have not spoken to the media to date, nor have they posted comments or insight on Twitter," Micheletti says in a statement released Friday, Aug. 16. "There are numerous statements and theories in the media regarding Gia's death and her life that refer to sources close to Gia or friends of hers."

"As her mother, I am well aware of Gia's close friends and her best friends and I am personally going on record to refute all statements to the media out there thus far, with the exception of official statements we have released through publicist Penelope Jean Hayes, and those jointly with Ryan Anderson's NBA team representation," the statement continues.

Micheletti takes particular issue with one so-called friend, Loredana Ferriolo, who spoke to the New York Daily News about a conversation she allegedly had with Allemand the night before her death.

"Gia liked everyone and always found the good in people; however, there were acquaintances that she had disassociated with who are now speaking as her close friends," Micheletti says. "I don't like to give further publicity by mentioning names here; however there is a particular individual, Loredana Ferriolo, identifying herself as Gia's best friend, and the fact is that Gia expressed directly to me that she did not trust this individual and her motives for her own public exposure."

"After the funeral, I do intend to speak about my dear daughter's life and death, and will do so in an open disclosure way with a trusted media source," Micheletti concludes. "Thank you for all those truly concerned and God bless."

As previously reported, Allemand was found by her boyfriend, NBA Pelicans player Ryan Anderson, after an apparent suicide attempt on Monday, Aug. 12. She was taken that night to University Hospital, New Orleans, where she remained on life support until Wednesday, Aug. 14.

A funeral for the former model is in the works, a rep for the star confirmed to Us Weekly. She will be laid to rest sometime next week at the Papavero Funeral Home in Queens, N.Y.

Journalist Shocked -- SHOCKED -- at Fan Reactions to 12th Doctor & This Crazy "Internet" Thing

I’ve become fascinated, over the last week or so, at the reaction online to the announcement of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who. When his name was initially announced, during an admittedly-overblown, overlong television special designed to make the news “an event” that it really wasn’t, I’ll admit that the news surprised me. It wasn’t that I thought it was a bad choice — quite the contrary; Capaldi’s gift at playing irascible could be very welcome in the character. But the tendency in recent years has been towards younger, more heartthrob-y Doctors: Capaldi is a 55-year old former punk-rocker.

That said, what seems to be drawing so much online ire is just how expected a choice it was. While Capaldi may be the oldest Doctor since William Hartnell, the very first Doctor in 1963, he is —like the 11 before him—a white male. After all the speculation, excitement and rumor-mongering that, this time, we’d finally get a female Doctor or a black Doctor or some kind of Doctor that wasn’t just like all of the other Doctors that we’ve seen before, we ended up with one we’d expected all along. For a show in which the endless potential of people is such a recurring theme, Doctor Who can be very limiting at times in its casting choices.

Leaked Letter Shows Forever 21 Demoting Workers and Cutting Insurance, PTO

A disgruntled Forever 21 employee has caused an internet uproar by leaking a letter that indicates that the company is demoting numerous full-time non-management employees to part-time positions, which means they will no longer receive benefits.

Many believe that the letter, seen below, is Forever 21's response to the new costs the Affordable Care Act is placing on employers:

Collapse )

According to the letter, an unnumbered but significant amount of employees will no longer receive paid time off, will not be allowed to work more than 29.5 hours a week and will no longer have health insurance.

The company has been inundated with numerous comments on their Facebook page from angry customers who say they will never shop at Forever 21 again and who are blaming the change on aforementioned ACA requirements. The ACA has already kicked a number of companies, retail or otherwise, into overdrive with concerns about the cost of paying employees. Tangentially, Forever 21 has been part of a class-action lawsuit in which former employees alleged that they weren't paid for overtime.

The company has responded to the numerous angry comments on their Facebook page with the same statement, which denies that their choice to move employees from full to part-time has anything to do with the Affordable Care Act. It also paints the financial circumstances of the clothing chain as more grim than they previously appeared:

[Insert name here], thank you for reaching out. Forever 21, like all retailers, staffs its stores based on projected store sales, completely independent of the Affordable Care Act. After a recent evaluation, Forever 21 realigned its staffing needs to better reflect sales expectations. This realignment impacted less than 1% of all U.S. store employees. Forever 21 values all of its employees and made every effort to affect as few employees as possible in this realignment.

Media Watchdog Group Asks Fox's 'Dads' to Reshoot 'Racist' Scenes

The Media Action Network for Asian Americans fires off a letter to executives, criticizing the comedy's "racial and sexual stereotypes" and blasting co-creator Alec Sulkin for an insensitive tweet he wrote in reference to the tsunami that hit Japan two years ago.

The hits keep on coming for Fox's forthcoming comedy Dads.

Two weeks after producers were put on the defensive at the Television Critics Association press tour over the show's controversial nature, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans fired off a letter asking that "racist" scenes be reshot before the show premieres.

Guy Aoki, founding president of MANAA, which touts itself as "the only group solely dedicated to being a media watchdog for Asian American media issues," sent the letter addressed to Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly, COO Joe Earley, senior vp comedy Marcus Wiley and senior vp current programming James Oh.

"Our community can't continue to be the target of racially insensitive jokes," Aoki wrote. "Fox has an opportunity to fix fatal flaws in the pilot and to improve the show's chances for success when it premieres next month. We are asking you to reshoot the inappropriate scenes of the pilot. Considering the consistent feedback from our community and television critics in general -- and the creators saying they hadn't properly defined their characters nor gotten used to their actors when they shot that first episode -- this sounds like a no-brainer."

Writing about the show's "racial and sexual stereotypes," Aoki cited such moments as actress Brenda Song dressing up as a "sexy Asian schoolgirl" when the main characters were about to meet with Chinese businessmen and Martin Mull's character calling Asians "Orientals."

Oscar Pistorius to be charged for premeditated murder of girlfriend

Prosecutors say the South African Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius will be indicted for premeditated murder on Monday and he will go on trial in early 2014 for shooting dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on 14 February this year.

National prosecuting authority spokesman Medupe Simasiku said the exact date for the trial has not yet been set and will probably be decided on Monday, the Paralympian's next appearance in court.

Simasiku declined to comment on South African media reports that charges will be added in relation to Pistorius allegedly discharging a firearm recklessly in two other incidents.

But Simasiku said the main charge on the indictment would "definitely" be premeditated murder, meaning Pistorius would face a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted on that charge.

Pistorius denies the charge of murder.

Marianne has also cancelled her appearance at the tribute concert to Edith Piaf in New York. She is now recovering at home in Paris, but her next album will also be delayed as a result of the accident. Marianne has a strong mental spirit so is determined to be back on the road and in the studio as soon as possible.

Lindsay's comback just keeps getting better! A+ report from set

Lindsay Lohan knocked it out of the park on "Eastbound & Down" -- sources tell TMZ, she crushed her cameo Kenny Powers-style ... and even got a standing ovation from the cast and crew. Sources close to production tell us, Lindsay didn't just conduct herself professionally while on set this week in North Carolina -- showing up on time and memorizing her lines backwards and forwards -- she was actually funny too.

As we reported, Lindsay is set to appear in the series finale, playing Kenny's illegitimate daughter. After filming, we're told the cast and crew were so impressed by Lindsay's performance, they gave her a standing o. We're told the HBO show's co-creator Jody Hill hugged it out with Linds and thanked her for taking the gig.

Post-rehab fun fact: we're told Lindsay had a sober living coach with her the entire time she was on set. We're told Lindsay wants everyone to know she's serious about her second millionth chance, and she's determined to make it count. So far, so good.

From Best Actress to Unreleased Shark Movies: Slumming It With Halle Berry

In 2002, Halle Berry won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the film “Monster’s Ball,” becoming the first and only black actress to date to win the award for a leading role. During her famous, tearful acceptance speech, she said “This moment is for every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance because tonight this door has been opened.” Her pronouncement hasn't quite proven true as of yet for other actors and actresses in leading roles, but even more notably, it hasn't proven true for herself. For an actress who was once on top of the world and among the most highly paid female performers anywhere, the last decade can’t be considered anything but a cinematic mess.

Case in point: 10 years after “Monsters Ball,” Halle Berry was reduced to doing killer shark movies. The film, last year’s “Dark Tide,” didn’t even receive a wide theatrical release, despite costing $25 million to make. It recouped roughly 4 percent of that budget in theaters and holds a perfect 0 percent “fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes. This movie stars a former Oscar winner for Best Actress. We must ask: How did it come to this for Halle Berry?

Billboard: Katy Perry's "Roar" doubles Lady Gaga's "Applause" in sales.

Katy Perry Set to Sell 450k Downloads of 'Roar,' Gaga's 'Applause' Set for 225k Debut

Katy Perry's new song "Roar" is off to a roaring sales start, with industry forecasters suggesting it will move around 450,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week on Sunday (Aug. 18).

Meanwhile, fellow diva Lady Gaga is also off to a handsome launch with her new single "Applause." It's heading for a bow of perhaps 200,000 to 225,000 downloads.

"Roar" and "Applause" were released to digital retailers on Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 12 and 13), respectively. The songs preview new studio albums for each superstar: Perry's "Roar" leads her "Prism" set, due out Oct. 22. "Applause" is the first single from Gaga's "ArtPop," which arrives on Nov. 11.

On Monday, Aug. 12, there were early indications that both "Roar" and "Applause" could sell over 400,000 downloads. At the time, industry sources theorized that, considering both artists' stellar track history with digital song sales, a robust first-week for the two acts seemed likely.

However, once the songs went on sale, the forecast changed. Still, we have four more days left in the tracking week -- so anything can happen.

Shailene Woodley talks about what it means to her to cut her flowing native goddess locks off

hello brotha’s and sista’s alike! as some of you may know, i will be cutting my hair off this coming weekend in order to help morph my physical body into that of the incredible Hazel Grace Lancaster—-and i couldn’t be more amped. not only do i have the opportunity to externally shift my current establishment of self, but i have the blessed gift of donating my long locks to a wonderful organization who will then create a wig for someone in need. WHAT AN HONOR.

john green (author of T.F.I.O.S.), wyck godfrey (producer of the film), and i all decided that this could be a beautiful opportunity to rally the troops of mankind and ask for some warriors to help contribute to the cause. any of you have 8 inches of hair to spare? or maybe know a friend or family member that does? if so, consider JOINING THE #hairforhazel TEAM! i’ve already got my mom committed, and possibly a few friends as well. i know the thought of chopping off part of your image is frightening, which is why i want to share with you my personal relationship with my hair (woah, that was a lot of “with’s” and “my’s”)

Ariana Grande's Grand Entrance: Inside The Nickelodeon Star's Debut Album

Two huge singles have propelled the singer to an audience beyond her TV fans.

Ariana Grande was a star before she released her single "The Way" last spring. The co-star of Nickelodeon's hit series "Victorious" had accrued 5.4 million Twitter followers and 2.6 million Facebook fans by the time the Mac Miller-assisted single hit iTunes on March 26. After that fan base helped the fluttering R&B track score a surprising No. 10 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, however, the 20-year-old singer's Nickelodeon success has morphed into mainstream stardom ahead of her debut album, "Yours Truly," due Sept. 3.

"I never realized until now how many more people I could reach with music," says Grande, who now boasts 8.3 million Twitter followers and 4.2 million Facebook fans. "I've been so lucky to be on television for such a long time and to make kids and their families so happy, but this is something different. I can't really go anywhere without being stopped for a photo anymore, but now, it's not just little kids."

Kanye West Gets Booed At Los Angeles Baseball Game

The atmosphere at Dodger's Stadium in Los Angeles was warm and welcoming on Wednesday evening – unless, of course, your name was Kanye West.

Indeed, the notoriously moody rapper enjoyed a few precious hours away from Kim Kardashian and newborn daughter North to take in a baseball game between local team Los Angeles Dodgers and arch rivals New York Mets.

Having arrived with Kim's younger brother Rob, Yeezy was roundly booed by Dodgers fans as his face appeared on a large screen inside the stadium.

“Kanye West was just shown on the jumbatron at Dodger Stadium and booed,” ESPN writer Arash Markazi tweeted at the time.

Markazi later noted for his followers that Kanye and his party had been reseated, tweeting: “Kanye West just got moved to second row seats near the Mets dugout. #KanyeWatch.”

To celebrate Madonna's birthday, Billboard ranked Madonna's 40 biggest Billboard Hits

She's the Queen of Pop and royalty on the Billboard charts. To celebrate Madonna's 55th birthday today (August 16), we've compiled an exclusive ranking of the diva's 40 biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit singles.
Since arriving on the Hot 100 the week of Oct. 29, 1983, with "Holiday," she has earned a total of 56 chart hits, including a record 38 top 10 singles. Yes, you read that right: Madonna has more top 10 hits than any other artist in the 55-year history of the chart (and incidentally, Madonna was born the exact same month as the Hot 100, which also just celebrated its 55th birthday). The Beatles are in second place, with 34 top 10s.

Doctor Who: Why Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor might be a lot like Malcolm Tucker after all

“OMG Malcolm Tucker as #DoctorWho? Swearing in the Tardis?! LOL!” No. This has been said to death, but firstly Doctor Who doesn’t swear, and Peter Capaldi, as an actor, can play more than one role. But we shouldn’t dismiss the internet hubbub entirely. The Twitterers could be closer to the mark than they realise.

The Doctor may not have Tucker’s vocabulary, but he is likely to have his accent. For whatever reason, some fans seem to object to this. Christopher Eccleston kept his mellow Northern tones, but judging by the forums some people think Scotland is slightly too far to stretch. Plenty of planets have a North, admittedly, but there’s only one Glasgow.

Why Have This Year's Original Sci-fi Movies Been So Disappointing?

The year 2013 was supposed to be the one that saved original science fiction at the movies.

Remember how this year's crop of sci-fi looked back in January? Sure, there were sequels like Star Trek Into Darkness and adaptations like Ender's Game on the way, but they were easily overshadowed by the ambitious-looking Oblivion, the intriguing After Earth, the supposedly game-changing Pacific Rim and Elysium, the latter of which was destined to more than live up to the promise of director Neill Blomkamp's District 9. Six months ago, we were promised the best and most ambitious year of science fiction films since, well, ever.

Collapse )

There's light at the end of all of this, but it's still looking awfully dim.

This was an interesting read.  True in a lot of cases (won't say that Elysium was a complete disappoint but will admit it could have been better).  Pacific Rim is amazing though and nobody can tell me otherwise. Hopefully we get Snowpiercer in all of it's glory by the end of the year instead of a cut-up, dumb-downed version that Hollywood wants us to have.
Why is it so hard to make good science fiction films?

Bill O’Reilly Tells Oprah To ‘Ignore’ Racism

Bill O’Reilly opened his show Wednesday night by giving some advice to Oprah Winfrey in light of the controversy surrounding her claims of racism while visiting Switzerland. While O’Reilly defended Winfrey from critics who question the racist intent of the shop clerk who turned her away, he also told the media mogul it’s probably best for her to “ignore” racism like this in the future.

Noting the “heat” Winfrey has received since she first spoke out about her experience, O’Reilly said her “critics are misguided.” He said, “that was Oprah’s experience and she has every right to express her opinions about it. The truth is there are racists. There are people who don’t like women holding power. There are all kinds of loons running around.”

O’Reilly said “unless the situation is serious,” Winfrey and everyone else “should ignore those troglodytes,” adding, “the truth is you are not going to change the minds of the ignorant and it’s not worth the effort in any case.”

He said the fact that Winfrey is now “one of the most powerful human beings on the planet” proves that her race did not hold her back from success. “There is racism in the world,” O’Reilly said. “It’s not going away. And if you can change it, try, but most of the time ignore it. And don’t let it dampen your life.”

out of all the shit, this really pisses me off - "He said the fact that Winfrey is now “one of the most powerful human beings on the planet” proves that her race did not hold her back from success". if anything, it proves that REGARDLESS of a black person's success, they are still treated like they are nothing. that no amount of success can wipe away the inequality that drenches all black people. that no matter how many degrees, how much money they have in their bank, or whether they are the 'leader of the free world', they are still seen as inferior.

American Scientists Attempt to Sequence John Lennon's Genetic Code from the Beatle's Tooth

John Lennon's tooth is going under the microscope in a US lab with scientists considering ways to extract the genetic code from the fragile specimen owned by Canadian dentist-tooth collector Dr. Michael Zuk. "I am nervous and excited at the possibility that we will be able to fully sequence John Lennon's DNA, very soon I hope. With researchers working on ways to clone mammoths, the same technology certainly could make human cloning a reality," says Dr. Zuk.

The dentist attracted attention from skeptics for purchasing the rotten molar for over $30,000 US at a UK auction in 2011, with commentary from Bill O'Reilly and Anderson Cooper (making the Ridiculist). Dr. Zuk is standing firm with his conviction that the investment could be one of the best decisions of his life. Zuk says "to potentially say I had a small part in bringing back one of Rock's greatest stars would be mind-blowing.

Other interesting considerations related to this story include:

*How future human cloning of the ultra-rich and famous could become the rage.

*New challenges to the laws that could need to recognize the legal rights of human clones.

*A unique Beatle DNA sculpture of Lennon & McCartney which may be donated to the John Lennon Art School in Liverpool.

The molar has been busy since being sold by the Beatle's former housekeeper. It participated in a number of charitable ventures including a tour of the UK to raise awareness of mouth cancer, a line of John Lennon DNA pendants, a number of television appearances and a celebrity DNA documentary. The exact details of the scientific research is being kept confidential, but if sequencing is possible, the dentist has approved tests to be conducted to gain insight into Lennon's genes for a UK documentary on celebrity genetics.

Kal Penn Explains Himself

Twitter is great for communicating with fans, and for hearing new perspectives. Twitter sucks when you're trying to explain your views on something complicated and nuanced that needs more than 140 characters. Or so I've learned.

Obviously, I am not a constitutional lawyer (and have never played one on TV). These days I tweet mostly about tacos and acting, but on Tuesday, I tweeted a link to Mayor Bloomberg's op/ed on the "stop & frisk" decision, and in a matter of minutes I became a racist asshole who deserves to eeaaaat shiiiiiiiit. Huh?

So let me clarify. The point of those tweets was what I presumed was a discussion among progressives of color, as a brown guy who gets stopped all the time after 9/11 and who lives in big cities, about what various things we need to do to make our communities of color safer -- together, including adhering to the constitution, and openly talking about whether there is merit to portions of a particular law when taken in conjunction with larger community-building. Not separately in some weird "us vs. them" mentality, but together. I tweeted something that alluded to a statistic about who commits crime and who are the victims of crime. I did a poor job being clear -- the stat was from the City of New York, indicating that 97 percent of gun violence victims are black and brown (this was the main point). Ninety-six percent of suspects fall into the same category. I fall into the same category as a brown man who has had a gun held to his head twice, and who also gets stopped and frisked.

I think the entire context of my tweets was lost -- probably because I tried to make some snarky cynical banter in a tweet about "activist judges." (That was meant as a jokey way of using words that we usually see on far-right news networks but was received about as well as my role in The Mask 2.) My original point was a conversation piece. As people of color is this effective? Does it have merit? How do we make our own communities of color safer (since we are collectively more often victims of crime)? It was a mistake to try to casually engage in 140 characters with folks who I thought understood my background and beliefs; instead, folks misunderstood this as a strong advocation of something entirely different. I feel terrible about that and am sorry.

I do know what it feels like to get stopped repeatedly for being brown post-9/11 (it sucks). And I do know what it feels like to have a gun put to your head repeatedly for walking down the street (FYI also sucks). At the end of the day, I'm going to resume tweeting about some more tacos, but if the vitriol of the Twitterverse is any indication, we all feel passionately about public safety and equality, about uplifting our communities, increasing access to education, economic prosperity, and community building. I've been proud to work on those issues both inside and outside of government, and continue to look forward to doing so. In more than 140 characters. You may resume your jokes, Hari Kondabolu (they were good ones).

Raz-B ON LIFE SUPPORT Comatose After Bottle Attack

R&B singer Raz-B is currently on life support in a hospital in China ... just one day after he was smashed in the face with a bottle at a nightclub, TMZ has learned.

We spoke to Raz's publicist, Toy Jones, who tells us, "He is in a coma and needs as many prayers as possible."

As we previously reported, the 28-year-old was performing at a club in China on Thursday and was smashed in the face with a glass bottle while trying to break up a fight that erupted in the crowd.

Raz received medical attention hours after the incident --and underwent minor surgery to repair a gash in his lip.

But the next day, sources close to Raz tell us he didn't wake up ... and Raz's backup dancer rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

We're told doctors tested for brain activity and determined the situation was dire. Sources say Raz is breathing from a ventilator ... and has been slipping in and out of consciousness.

Iggy Azalea Talks VMAs, Beyoncé Tour, "The New Classic" & New Single "Change Your Life" Preview

It was just last year that we placed Iggy Azalea in our 2012 XXL Freshman class. The Aussie native was the first female MC to grace the cover on the strength of her track “Pu$$y” and breakthrough mixtape Ignorant Art. Nearly a year later, Iggy has been on the steady climb to the top of the rap game, with some assistance from her mentor T.I. After releasing impressive projects—Glory and TrapGold—she’s set to release her debut album The New Classic in September. She’s had her moments of beef in the past, but now things are going her way.

With her move to Island Def Jam in April, the 23-year-old is never afraid to discuss the buzz surrounding her career. XXL got on the phone with Iggy to speak on her chances of winning Artist To Watch at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, going on tour with Beyoncé and proving herself as a lyricist. Plus, she took the time to explain the concept behind her “Change Your Life” video and breaks down why there won’t be a lot of features on her new album. —Eric Diep (@E_Diep)

I saw that you have a VMA nomination for Artist To Watch.
Yeah, it’s very big. I’m fucking ecstatic about it. [Laughs] Every kid grows up watching the VMAs and it’s the highlight of the year because you get to see all the celebrities and artists you like all in one place. They get the award and you are happy for them, so it’s crazy that I even have a chance that I get to walk up and say something and get a Moonman too. It’s amazing.

Kim Kardashian drags two-faced bitch Katie Couric

Kim Kardashian is reeling after Katie Couric slammed her in an interview Thursday -- despite sending her a baby gift for North West -- telling her not to "talk s**t" if she's going to pretend to be nice.

Kim just responded on Instagram to Katie's In Touch interview, in which Katie said she doesn't understand why Kim and the rest of the Kardashians are famous. Katie said, "I think it's mostly teenage girls that are interested."

And Kim isn't happy, posting an image of the gift Katie sent to her for baby North West, including hashtags that say "I hate media friends" and "May I humbly suggest you not send gifts then talk s**t."

Rizzle Kicks Post

Rizzle Kicks know exactly what being twentysomething in London is like. Look no further than the cover of their new album. A week before the rap-pop duo’s planned and paid-for official album shoot, Harley Alexander-Sule and Jordan Stephens attended a restaurant launch, by their own admission got “smashed” and hopped on some parked Boris Bikes with their mates for a lark. A passing teenage photographer, Harry Crowder, took a grainy snap and sent it to Stephens on Twitter the next day.

“I remember looking at it and thinking, ‘Fuck, that’s the album cover’,” Stephens tells me.
With the Barclays logos replaced by signs saying “DEADBEATS” and the title Roaring 20s scrawled above the heads of the gurning partygoers, here’s a picture of a 24-hour city where the streets really could be paved with gold.

Of course, these are not your everyday 21-year-olds. We can’t all have platinum album sales, James Corden popping round and TV companies banging down the door. But it isn’t that long ago that Stephens was cooking burgers in a greyhound stadium and Alexander-Sule was working as a teaching assistant. Lifelong friends, both Londoners via teenage years in Brighton, they know how it is, and are increasingly keen to become the voice of their generation.

"What you like is in the limo
What you get is no tomorrow
What you need you have to borrow"

- "Fame," by David Bowie (w/John Lennon and Carlos Alomar)

At some point in the final reel of Crayton Robey's Making the Boys, Dan Savage argues that, "To be a dumb gay person is a luxury that was won for you by gay people who came before, when being gay was so complicated and so difficult that dumb gay people didn't last." Clips of Project Runway personality Christian Siriano are then offered as evidence that the torch has indeed been passed to a less intellectually gifted generation. I can only hope that this is achieved through cruel tricks of editing.

Savage makes a good point. Gay men have held an honored place among the intellectual elite since Sophocles (at least). So there is a palpable anxiety at the prospect of a sinking common denominator, the inevitable byproduct of a larger out community. The fear is that the quality of gay culture is falling, not unlike SAT scores, as more people participate. Or, perhaps, that the kids just aren't that bright, because they no longer have to be.

Reprehensible elitism or a healthy appreciation of intelligence? Probably a bit of both.

YouTube Star Michelle Phan Launches Her Own Line of Cosmetics

Might want to invest in another Caboodle– Michelle Phan, YouTube makeup artist extraordinaire, has just released her first cosmetics collection.

According to Allure, Phan’s line ‘em’ (a Vietnamese term of affection meaning “you”) is backed by L’Oreal and features a dizzying 250 products, including eye shadow, blush, lipstick, bronzer and more. To simplify things even further (isn’t that what YouTube beauty tutorials are all about?), em offers six comprehensive ‘Life Palettes,’ each of which contains 24 eye shadows, four blushes, and eight lip colors to use for day, night, work, play, etc. etc.

And Phan didn’t skimp on packaging, either. User friendly innovations–like easily swappable eye shadow pots and loose powder held safe by a screen, as well as some of the shades’ names–were inspired by comments from her zillions of fans on YouTube and Facebook.

For a peek at em–and the inspiration behind it (hint: it’s you!), watch Phan’s video preview below. According to her Facebook, she’ll be releasing more info tonight on her YouTube channel.

My first post so I have no idea if I'm doing this right but yeah. I love Michelle and have been a fan since near the start so I'm really happy for her.

Jennifer Hepler leaves Bioware

Jennifer Hepler, the BioWare writer harassed by fans for her work on Dragon Age 2 - and for comments made years earlier about wishing to skip combat sections in games - this week left the famed RPG studio to work on a book and pursue some freelance work.

She had received death threats, had her family and children threatened and found herself the figurehead of a raging debate about how fans treat game makers in an age of unprecedented access brought on chiefly by Twitter.

She spoke to Polygon about the ramifications it could have for gaming as part of a large and impressive article.

"It's something that comes up in almost every conversation with female developers," she said of her experience.

"Overall, people seem to try to shrug it off publicly and fume privately, and younger women contemplating the field are reconsidering whether they have the stomach to handle what it currently asks of them.

"That's the biggest risk in my opinion: that we will lose out on the talents of people who would make fantastic games that we would all be the better for playing, because they legitimately don't want to make themselves into targets.

"A lot of the best artists and storytellers (and quite a few great programmers too)," she said, "tend to be sensitive people - we shouldn't lose out on their talents because we are requiring them to be tough, battle-scarred veterans just to walk in the door."

Polygon also heard from retired BioWare boss Greg Zeschuk, who's thought to have turned his back on the industry following the Mass Effect 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic fallout, although he's never said as much.

"It's part of going out there and putting yourself out there," he said of abuse related to making games. "I just really wish it would get sorted out. I do think there are good, passionate people who get dragged into it and it makes their lives miserable. Making games is stressful enough, just making them, without having to worry about this.

"The impact of having all your brightest creators losing steam and going, 'Screw this,' it's not good. It's not going to lead to good stuff."

One such high profile case of a developer saying "screw this" was Phil Fish, who cancelled Fez 2 recently and swam away from games, saying, "I choose not to put up with this abuse anymore."
