Stephenie Meyer on ‘Twilight’: ‘I Am So Over It’

“Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer is moving on. She’s put a stake in the heart of her megahit vampire franchise, and saw modest results ($48 million worldwide) earlier this year from an adaptation of her romantic sci-fi novel “The Host.”

These days, instead of writing, she’s more focused on being a producer — a skill she gained from assuming that role on the final two “Twilight” movies and “The Host.”
Her two-year-old shingle Fickle Fish Films, launched with co-topper Meghan Hibbett, is readying its first release, “Austenland,” starring Keri Russell as a die-hard Jane Austen fan who plans a vacation at a country house steeped in the world of the 19th century British romance writer. The film, adapted from Shannon Hale’s novel of the same name, and directed by first-time helmer Jerusha Hess, will be released Aug. 16 by Sony Classics, which snapped up U.S. rights to the quirky $6.5 million comedy following its Sundance debut.

B.o.B. Responds To Kendrick Lamar With “How 2 Rap”

Bobby Ray is firing back at Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse with his own rebuttal “How 2 Rap.”

Feeling like a hip-hop underdog, B.o.B addresses the critics who crucify him for his pop crossover hits, but he also saves a little heat for Kendrick’s claim of being the best.

“I hear underrated so much, you would swear it was my name/ Ain’t no rappers on my list/ Come holler at me when you’re done riding each other’s dick/ 25 millions singles worldwide/ I guess I’ll take another hit/ Matter fact I find this rap shit boring/ Man, I’m over it,” raps B.o.B.

Still no word from any prominent New York rappers or any of the rappers who were name checked by Kendrick, but we’re patiently waiting.

THE WOLVERINE Co-Writer Reveals That Rogue Could Have Appeared In The Movie

While chatting to about his work on the film, The Wolverine co-writer Mark Bomback reveals that another member of The X-Men aside from Jean Grey could well have shared the screen with Logan in James Mangold's movie. He explains that because he was such a fan of Rogue (played by Anna Paquin in X-Men 1-3) and her connection with Wolverine, he toyed with the idea of adding her into the script..even trying to come up with a way for Yashida to come to possess her powers.

Cry Your Tears, ONTD Writers: Penguin Signs 13-Year-Old to Two Book Deal

Penguin Young Readers Group's latest debut author is also one of its target readers: a 13-year-old boy. The division's Grosset & Dunlap imprint has inked Jake Marcionette to a two-book, North American rights deal for his middle-grade series, Just Jake. The first book in the series, about a sixth grader trying to establish his social life at a new school, is set for February 2014.

Dan Lazar at Writers House sold the series to Francesco Sedita, president and publisher of Grosset & Dunlap. Marcionette, who began the books when he was 12, writes about a boy named Jake Ali Mathews whose life is upended after his family moves from Florida to Maryland. In his new school, Jake struggles to start fresh, while also avoiding the local bully.

Sedita said that he was "blown away" when he found out that the series, which will also feature illustrations, was written by a 12-year-old. The story, Sedita added, "reminded me of what it felt like to worry about finding the right classrooms, take impossible pop quizzes, and figure out the rules of popularity... and made me laugh the whole way through."

PYRG plans to publish the second book in the series in February 2015, and has an option on the planned third title.

The young writer published The Dude Kid on Amazon back in 2010.

Sedita explained why he acquired the book, in the release:

I was blown away when I learned that Jake Marcionette was only 12 years old when he wrote Just Jake. This book reminded me of what it felt like to worry about finding the right classrooms, take impossible pop quizzes, and figure out the rules of popularity . . . and made me laugh the whole way through.

13-year-old Marcionette added:

School can be scary and challenging in so many ways, but it can also be really funny. Whether in school, at home, or on the lacrosse field, I try to find the “funny” in my daily experiences. This book began as a collection of doodles and sketches of my classmates, and it has developed into a truly AWESOME book.

What I think you all should do is flood Penguin with your submissions. They're taking everything. (ETA: This was meant as a dig on Penguin, not the kid. Starting with them scouring through Twilight and One Direction fan fiction, then WattPad for things to publish. It looks like they're going after whatever they can get their hands on. That doesn't negate the fact the kid wrote these books — and his own story at that, not using someone else's as a base.)

Flawless Kween Kirsten Dunst to Star in "Midnight Special" with Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon

Depending on your own age, you'll be horrified in varying degrees by the revelation that 2014 marks Kirsten Dunst's 25th year in showbusiness. The actress—still only 31—made her debut in Woody Allen's segment of "New York Stories," before going on to notable early roles in "The Bonfire Of The Vanities," "Little Women" and most famously, "Interview With The Vampire." Her career's had its ups and downs over time, but with a Cannes Best Actress trophy for "Melancholia" a couple of years back, she's never been more respected. And in her biggest subsequent gig, she's just signed up with another Croisette-approved auteur.

On Monday, Comedy Central revealed the list of comedians and actors expected to speak at the network's upcoming roast dedicated to the "Oz The Great and Powerful" star.

Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, Nick Kroll, Natasha Leggero, Jeff Ross, and Sarah Silverman have been confirmed as roasters for the ceremony, which will be taped on Aug. 25 in Culver City, Calif.

Comedy Central congratulated the roasters on its Twitter page:

It was previously announced that Franco's longtime pal and collaborator Seth Rogen will host the event. The two stars most recently worked together on "This Is the End," which was co-written and co-directed by Rogen and mostly set at a fictionalized version of Franco's house.

The cable network says additional Franco roasters will be announced shortly.

The "Comedy Central Roast of James Franco" will air on Labor Day, Sept. 2, at 10 p.m. ET.

IndieWire's 2013 Summer Movie Season In Review: The Winners and The Losers

While we're only a few weeks into August, summer blockbuster season is pretty much winding down for the year. Last weekend brought "Elysium," the last major tentpole for the moment (albeit an underperforming one), and the rest of August is mostly made up of lo-fi programmers and would-be-franchises that, if their studios had any confidence in them, would be coming out at a different time. So it seems like a good time as any to take a look at the summer box office over the last few months, and discuss who had a good May-August in 2013, and who really didn't.

The box office conversation has been dominated by a few high-profile flops, but on the whole, it's actually been a strong summer. While the profit from the hits might have been dented by the money-losers, theaters have been packed out, and Variety reports that we're running 12% ahead of the previous record-breaking year, 2011. That said, there are plenty of lessons to be learned here, and below, you can see who'll be popping open the champagne to celebrate come Labor Day, and who'll be drowning their sorrows. Let us know your own thoughts in the comments section when you're done.

Season 17, which premieres on Monday, September 9th, will look a whole lot different from years past. Both Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Joy Behar are no longer with the show, and Jenny McCarthy has joined the roundtable to sit between co-hosts Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg.

And while ABC still has another chair to fill (the show has yet to announce Behar's replacement), the network clearly wants you to know one thing: 'The View' will be a whole lot of fun with McCarthy.

New 'American Idol' Producers Talk VMA's, Kanye, & Adam Lambert

When MTV veterans Jesse Ignjatovic and Evan Prager left New York in 2007 to start the production company Den of Thieves, they went full-on Hollywood -- producing such glitzy events as the VH1 Divas special and the CMT Music Awards as well as reality shows like The T.O. Show, in addition to seven years of the Video Music Awards. While they are heading back to their roots -- and to Brooklyn's Barclays Center for the first time -- for the VMAs on Aug. 25, they'll then dive into their biggest gig yet: American Idol. The duo will fill the shoes of longtime exec producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick, who departed in June after season 12 saw ratings free-fall by more than 30 percent.

Collapse )

THR: Both of you have watched Idol in past seasons, do you have a favorite contestant?

Ignjatovic: It's probably Adam Lambert for me. I just love how he would re-imagine or recreate the songs and take the music to a different place. It goes without saying that he's a very talented performer and vocalist and such a likable guy. His work with the Idol team to stage different looking performances, that connected with me. I remember I couldn't stop talking about him that season.

Prager: I was excited when Carrie Underwood won. I just knew they found a star at that point. And when David Cook came out and recreated ["Billie Jean"] by Michael Jackson -- that was sick. That excites me. Adam Lambert is obviously an amazing example of that, too -- where they find their identity and show it and take cover songs that show what they're going to be as an artist. When you get those moments, it's fantastic.

THR: Since coming in second on season eight, Adam Lambert has been back on Idol every year, either as a performer or a mentor. It's one reason why there's been a push to have him at the judges' table. Would you consider him?

Prager: We all know having watched the show that he is really beloved. As far as him being considered as a judge, you've heard just as many names thrown out there as we have, but I think that he is obviously a big part of the show and getting him on there is always great.

ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTED, GAGA & KATY: Tan Mom releases new music!!!

Brace yourselves for what's to come, friends. Tan Mom Patricia Krentcil has decided to continue her musical journey (sorry!) by releasing her sophomore single "Life of the Party" along with a music video—and it's bad. It's really bad. However, you find yourself hypnotized by the WTF-quality of it that you cannot look away.

Right off the bat, Krentcil played a quick game of tonsil hockey with gay pop star Adam Barta and drag queen Skyla Versai, attempting to recreate the famous three-way smooch between Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Music Awards.

After promising to "rock your world," Tan Mom starts to rap about everything and anything, including how she enjoys dropping her top down "at the beach or on the town, Malibu to Jersey Shore, don't do anal, not a whore."

She then goes on to diss Farrah Abraham, talk about her adventures with Barta and her appearance on Howard Stern, illustrate her love for Pop Tarts, discuss her new sobriety since going to rehab with Michael Lohan (if you offer her a drink, she'll tell you "hell no to the no") and—wait for it—even struts a thong.

Oh, and did we mention she dances?

omg she looks so good!

Tattoos and Their Place in the Fashion Industry: Fashion Designer Marc Jacobs Weighs In on the Issue

People are always asking Marc Jacobs what he’ll think when he’s 80. Will he regret the SpongeBob SquarePants on his right arm if it wrinkles or droops? Or will he feel sorry about the line drawing on his stomach of a sofa by Jean-Michel Frank, or the sketch of a laughing Elizabeth Taylor wearing 3-D glasses, or any of the words, like oui, lui (both name-checking seventies adult magazines), shameless, or bros before hos (he was going through a breakup)? Katy Perry reveals what she does when she's NOT "ROARing"!!!

Katy Perry, whose new single “Roar” is now taking the world by storm. You would think she’s got the whole ‘international pop star thing’ nailed down by now with the pending release of her third full length album, Prism, the follow-up to her highly successful 2010 release Teenage Dream. When Katy sat down with Fresh 102.7's Kim and her partner Jim on August 12, Katy revealed that she’s just as human as the rest of us and needs some quality time to devote solely to herself – body and mind. Interestingly enough, one of Katy’s favorite things to do to unwind happens right in our backyard.

“I think making my body feel good boosts my confidence,” Katy told Kim. “I think if I just take a minute to get more sleep and also if I [take] a run. My favorite thing to do here in NYC is bicycle right by the waterfront. Just put on a new record that I want to listen to and just go bicycling up and down, up and down. And go bicycling in Central Park! It is so nice. It’s like all these scenes are changing around you. It’s a beautiful feeling.”
“So, I love the outdoors. I go hiking, I do all the outdoors stuff,” Katy continued. “I just try to make sure my body feels good and then my mind feels good. And then I’m happy.”

Fiona Apple and Blake Mills Strip Down 'I Know' in Odd, Intimate Video

'When the Pawn...' heartbreaker shifts disarmingly to guitar ahead of collaborative tour

August 14 2013, 11:41 AM ET

Fiona Apple and Blake Mills' upcoming collaborative tour is called "Anything We Want," and they're already previewing a little bit of what that might mean. Apple recently shared a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video for "Hot Knife," off of last year's SPIN Essential album The Idler Wheel..., but rather than add visuals to another track from the album to promote the upcoming shows, Apple and Mills have gone back to 1999's When the Pawn... and its gut-wrenching "I Know." And rather than highlight the track in a more conventional way, Apple and Mills perform it in a new video (via Pitchfork) set in someone's living room. A smiling Apple holds the hand of a so-far unidentified woman, while Mills strums an acoustic guitar, standing in for the album version's piano, percussion, and strings. It's charming and intimate, but voyeuristically so, as we peek in on a moment where we're clearly outsiders.

Mike Will Made It: The Billboard Cover Story

How the man behind Kanye West's "Mercy" and Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" became the hottest producer in the Game

PatchWerk Recording Studios is housed in a light gray concrete bunker tucked behind a busy McDonald's on a tight corner on Atlanta's Westside. On a hot Friday in early June, Mike Williams, who produces under the moniker Mike Will Made It and is known to pretty much everyone as simply Mike Will, is behind the wheel of his silver BMW X6 on the street outside PatchWerk, indulging in a quick nostalgia trip.

"That's where it all got started for me, over there," he says, pointing to the studio. Will, 24, is wearing a red "Diamond Homegrown" shirt, long camouflage shorts, black Pumas and a gold chain. He was 16 when he began hanging around PatchWerk, working with the rapper Blaze, crafting beats and trying to force his way into the music business. One night, he saw his opening when Gucci Mane-who at the time was a successful Atlanta street rapper with some significant underground hits to his name ("Icy," "Freaky Gurl")-dropped by PatchWerk to record.

Chris Evans Finally Speaks Out About The Editing Injustice Weinstein Plans To Do With "Snowpiercer"

A few days ago at D23, I landed an extended video interview with Chris Evans.  Since we covered so many subjects, I broke it up into two parts.  In part one, which you can watch here, Evans talked about making Captain America: The Winter Solider, what the film is about, how it continues the love story from the first film, what it means for him to have the entire planet watching Marvel movies, if Joss Whedon has told him anything about The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Tom Hiddleston appearing as Loki at Comic-Con.

In part two, which is after the jump, Evans talks about his directorial debut 1:30 Train and what it’s about, revealing he hasn’t yet cast the female lead but filming is set to begin November 1st.  In addition, Evans talks about Dunkin Donuts finally coming back to L.A. (we’re both from New England where they are on every corner), and the recent news that The Weinstein Company might be cutting Bong Joon-Ho‘s post-apocalyptic thriller, Snowpiercer, for American audiences. While he’s careful about not saying the wrong thing, I didn’t hold back on what I thought and I think you’ll enjoy seeing his reaction.

Katy Perry Being Humble About The Success of "Roar"

Katy Perry has opened up about going head-to-head in the charts with Lady Gaga.

Perry, who put out her new single 'Roar' earlier this week, is now up against Gaga's 'Applause' after it was "rush-released" to iTunes yesterday.

"It's all about the music and I really agree with her message," Perry said of Gaga's track to AMP Radio. "I've always been a fan of hers and I like to see her evolution.

"I think that it's also nice that we're all in the same kind of cycle together because it really keeps us both on our toes… It's not that we feel competition, it's that we keep each other on each other's toes and it's a healthy thing."

'Roar' is currently at #1 on the US iTunes tally, while Gaga's 'Applause' keeps struggling at #2.

Meanwhile, discussing her new album Prism - which is out on October 22 - she said: "It's a record about self-reflection and self-empowerment and learning to deal with the curve balls that life throws you every single day and how I'm going to get through them."

Lady Gaga remains thirsty and abusing her fans begging them to buy her single MORE THAN ONCE yet Katy Perry remains winning without looking THIRSTY

Mary McCartney, child of Beatle Paul, releases cookbook

She's come a long way from being swaddled in the coat of her father, a photo made famous by the fact that it appeared on the back of her father's solo debut after the split of his band — a little Liverpool ensemble called the Beatles.

Now, Mary McCartney — the daughter of Paul and Linda — is all grown up, with the 43-year-old photographer's new vegetarian cookbook celebrating the simplicity of the home-cooked meals at the core of her famed family with the similarly simply named "Food."

But simplicity can be deceiving.

"It took me ages to come up with the title and they got more complicated, and then in the end I just sort of thought, well, if it's getting complicated, then simplify," she said, calling from London. She admitted to scratching a number of names, including "A Vegetarian Grows Up."

Taylor Swift "Hates" Justin Bieber, Feuding With Selena Gomez

Uh oh! Turns out, Selena Gomez's relationship with Justin Bieber isn't the only things that's had its ups and downs for the ""Come and Get It" star. Sources tell Us Weekly that Gomez's on-again, off-again romance with the "Heartbreaker" singer is now causing a rift between her and best friend Taylor Swift.

"Taylor hates him. She thinks Selena makes a mistake every time she reconciles with him," a source tells Us Weekly. "Bieber has really come between the girls."

In fact, when press asked Swift, 23, about Bieber at the Billboard Music Awards in May, the "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer declined to comment. "Can we have another question?" she replied. Gomez, 21, and Bieber, 19, were later caught kissing backstage.

Swift may not be fond of the young star, but the is feeling is mutual. "He complains Taylor's always telling Selena she can do better," a Bieber insider tells Us.

Though Swift didn't ring in Gomez's big 2-1 birthday bash with Bieber and the rest of her friends in Malibu on Saturday, July 27, Swift tweeted days earlier on July 22 that Gomez was "the closest thing I've ever had to a sister." A rep for the "Everything Has Changed" singer also reassures that "Selena and Taylor are great friends who talk almost daily."

Just Say No: When Bad Songs Happen to Good Artists

Even the best artists have been guilty of releasing at least one weak record during their careers. So, instead of only reflecting the best moments in music history, this weeks edition of Way Back Wednesday highlights some of those bad songs that should have never seen the light of day.

From Beyonce to Nicki Minaj, it seems as though no artist can honestly boast of having a flawless discography. They have all blundered at some point with songs that represented them in the worst possible ways. Yes, some of those tunes eventually became monster hits but does that really mean they were good or just reflecting the poor taste of consumers, who were simply attracted to catchy hooks?

Disclosure: 'We refuse to admit that we're mainstream, ever'

The duo, brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, have had a hugely successful year so far in 2013, selling over one million singles and hitting the top spot with their album 'Settle'. However, sections of the dance music community have criticised Disclsoure for their mainstream sound.

Speaking to NME in a new interview in this week's issue, available digitally and on newsstands now, Guy Lawrence disputes the charge and states: "We haven't sold out. If you take all the vocals off our tunes, it's still underground music. There's something weird about how songs are classified as 'commercial' or 'mainstream' these days. For us, we don't give a fuck. You can call it mainstream or you can call it super-future-mooncore-tech-garage. I just call it dance music. "

The older brother of the duo adds: "I hate the misuse of the word 'mainstream', because it does get applied to us, and it's not right, it's not fair. You can define something as mainstream by the sound of it, or you can define it by its success. I can say that Rihanna is mainstream and I can say that we're mainstream, because we've both had Number Ones. But in terms of sound, I refuse to admit that we're mainstream, in any way, ever."

First Look at 'Therese'

A tale of burning desire and betrayal, powered by two of the hottest rising actors around in Oscar Isaac and Elizabeth Olsen...yep, you can see what we're likely to carve out a space for "Therese" (formerly "Therese Raquin") at TIFF. And now the first clip for the film has been unveiled to give a little serving of what folks will get in Toronto next month.

Co-starring Jessica Lange, Tom Felton and Matt Lucas, Olsen stars as Therese, a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin Camille (Felton), who enters a passionate affair with her husband's best friend Laurent (Isaac). As you might guess, it doesn't end well. And in this scene, we witness the first introduction between the pair, presumably before their passions go into overdrive. Here's the official synopsis:

Set in the lower depths of 1860s Paris, Therese is a tale of obsessive love, adultery and revenge based on Emile Zola’s scandalous novel. Trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Therese embarks on an illicit affair with her husband's childhood friend that leads to tragic consequences.

Charlie Stratton directs the film that will be seeking a U.S. distributor to snap it up.

K. Michelle Is Having the Best Week Ever

K. Michelle's Rebellious Soul is Drawing RAVE Reviews from Critics

K is currently best known as one of the hilariously volatile stars of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, but if early word about her fierce new LP Rebellious Soul is any indication, she’s on the verge of becoming one of the biggest stars that R&B and soul music has to offer. Although we won’t know sales figures for another week, Rebellious Soul got off to an incredibly strong start on the charts this week; it is currently sitting at #3 on the iTunes Album Chart, right behind massive country music star Luke Bryan‘s Crash My Party and Lady Gaga‘s ARTPOP (which is available for pre-order). It has been bolstered by some incredibly strong reviews from critics, some of which we have compiled for you below:

Ellie slays the UK charts while 'Applause' stands at No.11

Ellie Goulding could be on course for her first ever Number 1 single this weekend, the can reveal.

The 26-year-old singer/songwriter from Herefordshire looks set to knock reigning chart queen Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop off the top spot with her new single, Burn. The track, which is taken from the forthcoming deluxe edition of her latest album, Halcyon, is currently outselling its closest competitor, Avicii’s Wake Me Up (Number 2) by almost two copies to one.

Should Ellie maintain her current lead, Burn will be her highest charting single to date; her cover of Elton John’s Your Song peaked at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart in 2010. However, the Lady Gaga pop machine has started up and is thundering its way towards the Top 10 with new single Applause after only a few hours on sale, so anything could feasibly happen between now and Sunday.

John Mayer LOVES Katy’s single “Roar”!!!!

It’s # 1 on iTunes around the world, but what does John Mayer think of Katy Perry’s new single, Roar?

“I remember hearing it, going like, ‘Wow what an interesting experience’ to hear something that you identify as massive before it’s massive,” he tells Billboard. “I thought it was a really sweet, unforgettable sort of experience to hear someone’s work while they still have a very nascent relationship with it.”

“In a way you get swallowed up by it, it’s so big,” he says, adding: “Because it’s such an incredibly big song that it doesn’t need you to tell anybody, while you’re eating lunch, [that] millions of people are going to be dancing on tables to that.”

Breaking Bad as a Romantic Comedy

We have seen some great edits of "Breaking Bad."
The show about a chemistry teacher ditching his job for a career in the meth business has inspired a parody as a '90s sitcom, and the guys who put together Honest trailers recently did one for the series.
Here's another we've just stumbled upon turning AMC's hit series into a romantic comedy.
Made by an 18-year-old who showcases video mashups on YouTube through his channel MHK Productions, the idea came about from a simple dinner discussion:
"My sister and I were talking over dinner and we were like "wouldn't it be funny if Walt and Jesse had a baby?" Then we started making a list of scenes we could use in a trailer and going through episodes to find clips."

Vin Diesel Talks Voicing Groot in Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Now that everything is out in the open and it seems like a done deal (though not officially finalized yet apparently), Vin Diesel has begun to speak about his role as the voice of sentient tree alien Groot in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy.

OK, so why Groot?
I’m an actor. I can do whatever the f*ck I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.

Why did you post a picture of the character on Facebook this weekend?
I get inspired by things. So if somebody sends me a book of conceptual art that’s the best character design work I’ve ever seen — I’m not kidding, I see that and I want to be a little cryptic and I want to say something positive. Even if it’s as cryptic as an old, dated image of a character.

Marvel is notoriously secretive about its movies, and you’re very open. Isn’t it mad you’ve been dropping hints about “Guardians”?
The last thing they are is mad. I’m pretty open, but I have been secretive about this. I went to Comic-Con and I got blasted while I was on the Hall H panel for “Riddick.” Someone asked a Marvel question. I couldn’t say anything because of that secrecy.

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, and Peter Serafinowicz, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1, 2014.

Beach Boys’ ‘Surfin’ U.S.A.’ Voted Best Summer Song of All Time

 photo b98e8142-55ae-4d29-bb40-846449da321d_beach-boys-michael-ochs-archives-8-1-62_zps69bc1b65.jpg

For the past month, Y! Music has been running a mega-poll to determine the Greatest Summer Song Of All Time.

After four exhaustive rounds and tens of thousands of votes, our readers have determined that The Beach Boys's "Surfin' U.S.A" takes the crown for the slice of rock and roll that sounds the best when barbecuing on the deck, sunbathing by the pool or surfing in the deep blue sea. In other words, it's the tune with the hooks, subject matter and history that best represent summer.

"Surfin' U.S.A." beat out summer mainstays past and present, including this year's "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke, last year's "Call Me Maybe" by Carley Rae Jepsen and yesteryear's summer jams like "Vacation" by The Go-Go's, "Summer Nights" from the 'Grease' soundtrack, and runner-up "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett.

The lyrics for "Surfin' U.S.A." were penned by Brian Wilson and feature Mike Love on lead vocals. The song first surfaced as a single on March 4, 1963 and was the title track to the Beach Boys' second album, the follow-up to 1962’s "Surfin’ Safari." Like many great rock and roll songs, "Surfin U.S.A." wasn't exactly an original composition, but to their credit, The Beach Boys never tried to bury that fact under the sand.

Future Plans To Marry Ciara

Future and Ciara have been an item for a minute now, but in a recent interview with HOT97, Future revealed that marriage is definitely somewhere down the road for the couple.

Future revealed that his commitment to Ciara is somethings special, indicating that she's "the one".

“This it…..I don’t get into nothing to get out." he shared, saying that while nothing is official, they will get married eventually. "We haven’t set a date, this the one. I said it seven years ago, so for it to come around and happen it was meant to be.”

Apparently Future had already put off his fast lifestyle when he met Ciara seven years earlier, and has been after her ever since.

The auto-tuned rapper touched briefly on the Twitter drama with Ciara and his exes. "It's complicated when you living two, three, four, lives," he admitted, but stressed that was he over that type of life.

Future Hendrix is not the only one publicizing their relationship, as Ciara spoke up about the couple's private "Body Parties" recently. "Body parties go down for sure," said Ciara. "Gosh. I mean, what would you do for your love. You gotta turn up!"

With no 'Real Women™', Breaking Bad can never be some random person on the internet's fave show

according to this writer, Skyler is a nag and a bore, and somehow it's the show that's being sexist.

Avoiding Breaking Bad spoilers on Twitter this week has been more complicated than Walt's meth-brewing process. Even though the drama hasn't had a regular place on British TV since 5 USA frittered away the second season on a late-night timeslot, it is firmly ensconced as event TV, and it seems that everyone wants to talk about it. Box sets and streaming sites have turned it into a slow-burning hit that is starting to replace Mad Men in the holy trinity of cinematic television, alongside, inevitably, The Sopranos and The Wire. The final part of its fifth and last season made its debut on US TV this week, and on Netflix here.

I like Breaking Bad. I like it. It's a good, solid drama. I watched this new episode determined to fall in love; after five seasons of increasingly breathless adoration from viewers and critics, I had hoped it might all finally slot into place, that I would think about Jesse's descent into horrified blankness in the same way as Adriana's final scene in The Sopranos, still able to recall clearly that gutpunch of loss and sorrow. And I thought it was good, and solid. The last 10 minutes were a masterclass in terror and tension. The rest of it made it clear that my problem with the show is the same as it has always been: its women are underwritten characters who only exist as plot-enabling satellites to the men. Collapse )

thoughts? I think they have a point about the male centric-ness of the show but to act like it's a problem specific to BB and that shows The Wire and Sopranos are so much better is ridiculous. Don't even get me started on their 'analysis' of Skyler. Also this is my first ever post. hope i didn't mess it up somehow!

Film Face-Off

District 9 vs Elysium

Is "dirty science fiction" a genre? I guess if Mad Max is science fiction, then yes. Director Neill Blomkamp now has two feature films under his belt, and both would fit that category. Blomkamp makes sure we're not just getting aliens, laser guns and spaceships, but also a not-very-subtle political/social slant. Just because something has a message doesn't make it dirty. It's the dirt, the blood, the dust and the evil humans out for their own particular greed. In this week's Film Face-off let's see how District 9 compares to Elysium, and if Blomkamp has suffered a sophomore slump.

Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie Narrowly Avoid Airplane Run-In

Safe to say these two narrowly missed what may have been a sufficiently awkward moment.

E! News has learned Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston were both scheduled to be flying first class on the same British Airways flight—unbeknownst to the actresses—out of LAX to London's Heathrow airport Sunday night.

But according to a well-placed source at Heathrow, an employee realized the flight might be awkward for Brad Pitt's current and former partners and informed Camp Aniston about the potentially uncomfortable situation.

Jennifer's schedule was subsequently changed, and she flew out Monday instead.

Sources also insist both ladies were blissfully unaware of the reason behind the switcheroo and had no idea they were originally meant to be on the same flight.

But that's not all that seemingly went down so the twosome could avoid each other.

While Brad and Angie and Jennifer all typically stay at the same luxury hotel when traveling to central London (Pitt and Aniston used to stay at the high-end hotel when they were married, and the We're the Millers star has remained loyal to the establishment since their split), E! News has learned both parties have opted to stay somewhere else this time around.

It's unclear whether the mother of six and Justin Theroux's other half chose different locations to evade each other or whether other places were simply more convenient for their work.

Although Aniston has clearly moved on with her fiancé, she previously opened up about her painful and public split from Pitt to Vogue magazine in 2008, admitting their 2005 divorce was much more amicable than the tabloids claimed while seemingly throwing some shade at Angie.

'Boston Strong' Gets Star-Studded

WARNING: Some triggering video clips of the Boston Marathon in the beginning of the video. Go straight to 0:18 to skip it.)
(Video at source)

What do Robin Thicke, Fall Out Boy, Ed Sheeran, 2 Chainz and the Cast of Pretty Little Liars have in common?

The stars came together to surprise admirable college students Nick Reynolds, Chris Dobens and Lane Brenner by participating in this star-studded PSA, which thanks the Emerson college students who began the now iconic "Boston Strong" t-shirt campaign.

In its Random Acts of mtvU: VMA Edition program, extraordinary college students will not only get a surprise message from some of the biggest names in the business, but get a once in a lifetime VMA experience with performer Katy Perry, courtesy of Pepsi and mtvU; a Best Buy shopping spree; and Windows Phones to create visual interpretations of VMA-nominated songs. Each segment will premiere on MTV and subsequently run on mtvU.

Beginning on Sunday, August 18, the program debuts with the story of Reynolds, Dobens and Brenner, who printed the Boston Strong motto on thousands of t-shirts in the immediate wake of the Boston Marathon bombings. Hoping to sell 100 t-shirts, they ended up selling 57,000, raising nearly $1 million for The One Fund, which was set up to assist survivors of the attack.

Pamela Anderson Says: ‘Save a Homeless Dog or Cat!’

 photo pamala-anderson-592x389_zpsa691e2d7.jpg

Actress, model, and PETA spokeswoman Pamela Anderson encouraged the masses via Twitter to adopt a dog or cat from the animal shelter, sharing a picture of her visiting a shelter dog. With the picture, she tweets, “Please Adopt Don’t Buy! Save a Homeless Dog or Cat!”

If you’re looking to add a furry companion to your household, animal shelters are the way to go. According to the Humane Society, 6-8 million pets enter shelters every year, but only around half of them will be adopted. Check to look for pets in need of homes near you. You can search by age, breed, or gender. If you’ve got your heart set on a specific breed, chances are there is a rescue group specifically for them.

If you’re not able to adopt a pet at this time, you can still help the animals by supporting shelters and rescue groups. Most animal shelters have a wish list of supplies, and all of them need loving volunteers. Everyone can do something!

Avicii & the Ever-Changing Face of EDM

Things started getting weird when the banjo player arrived. The Swedish DJ known as Avicii had already been spinning onstage at Miami’s Ultra music festival for quite awhile, playing fairly standard club fare that included snippets of his own “Levels” as well as “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The crowd had gathered to hear the latest in electronic dance music, so when a handful of bluegrass musicians shuffled onto the stage last March, they might as well have been astronauts–and almost immediately, the blogosphere was abuzz with confusion.

Yet, 24 hours after the battle between "Roar" and "Applause" officially began, there have been no casualties, and fans are crawling out of their bunkers to discover that the pop landscape remains intact. Bruce Willis: 'I'm bored with action movies'

Bruce Willis has admitted that he has become "bored" with appearing in action movies.

The RED 2 and A Good Day to Die Hard star claimed that he doesn't find high-octane parts "exciting".

The 58-year-old told Spanish publication XLS magazine: "Explosions are one of the most boring parts of my job. When you have seen a few fireballs, it's not exciting anymore. I know part of my audience enjoys the explosions, but to be honest, I'm a bit bored of it now.

"I am very clear with who I am. I work in all sorts of films, but the action movies are the ones that generate the most revenue. I like to earn lots of money from those, but I do all types: small productions, megaprojects, medium sized, even science fiction."

Willis added that he doesn't "spend the whole day counting bank notes", and only thinks about his wealth when journalists quiz him on the subject.

The Die Hard actor was recently dropped from The Expendables 3 by Sylvester Stallone after allegedly making excessive salary demands.

Kristen Wiig & TVOTR Frontman Tunde Adebimpe Will Make A 'Nasty Baby'

You've got to hand it to director Sebastian Silva... he has certainly defied all expectations. After scoring a little arthouse hit with 2009's festival fave "The Maid," Silva didn't cash in those chips for something mainstream, but instead pivoted around and let his freak flag fly. He teamed up with Michael Cera for two movies that dropped this year, the druggy road trip "Crystal Fairy" and the Polanski-esque thriller "Magic Magic." His next move? How about a comedy about two gay men looking to have a baby?

Yep, that's the premise of the bluntly titled "Nasty Baby," and even more, Silva is working a pretty serious Rolodex in casting this one. He's nabbed hot comedienne Kristen Wiig and TV On The Radio frontman and sometimes actor Tunde Adebimpe (you probably recognize him from "Rachel Getting Married") for the movie that will see two men (Adebimpe and Silva himself), who enlist their best friend to help them have a baby. But when the sperm of one of the dudes isn't working, the responsibility shifts to the other and problems arise. The picture will be set in Fort Greene, Brooklyn and will play against its multicultural backdrop, but even more, it's lining up a solid supporting cast. Alia Shawkat and Mark Margolis are slated along with Dennis O'Hare and Reg. E Cathey. And among the producers? How about "No" director Pablo Larrain.

We gotta say, this sounds potentially great and we certainly like how it's all coming together. No word yet on when production will begin, but once all the ink is signed and dry, we presume this one will move sooner rather than later.

Spike Lee Shares Park Chan-Wook's Reaction To His Remake Of 'Oldboy'

As the summer tentpole season starts wrapping up, one of the films we’re most curious to see in the latter half of the year is Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake. While the red-band trailer released last month seemed to alleviate some fears, the fact still remains that Park Chan-Wook’s 2005 film is arguably one of the few classic films released in the 21st century so far. It seems that Lee’s leading man Josh Brolin was so nervous about following in the Korean film’s footsteps that he sat down with the lauded South Korean filmmaker to ask for permission.

During a Q&A session (or AMA) on Reddit, Lee told a redditor that before filming commenced on the remake, “Brolin went to Park Chan-wook and asked for his blessing. He told Josh ‘you and Spike make your own film, don’t remake ours.’ And that’s what we did.” Fair enough, though the trailer did seem to follow the same outline as Chan-Wook’s film, there was some flair that was undeniably all Lee. However, as one smart-ass commenter noted, Chan-Wook’s quote — or Lee’s second-hand account of it — could be read as the Korean filmmaker chastising Brolin and Lee for attempting to film the same story. We’re sure the former meaning is the correct one to be taken away, though.

We’ll all find out how Lee & company did — and how the hell they’ll handle the ending — when “Oldboy” arrives in theaters on November 27th. Until then, here are some new pics from the film.

Tracklisting: Justin Timberlake – ‘The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2′

Justin Timberlake has the best-selling album of the year with The 20/20 Experience. On September 30, he will continue his big comeback by dropping the second installment. The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 features 11 all-new tracks, which he once again co-produced with Timbaland and Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon.

He revealed the tracklisting via Instagram videos throughout the day.

“I originally recorded a massive amount of material and decided on the 20 tracks that I wanted on the album over a year ago,” said Timberlake. “But, when I was mixing and going through all of the songs there were so many that I loved—I couldn’t resist… I had to throw in something extra on the second half.”

“The two albums are like seasons,” his manager Johnny Wright told Rolling Stone.

You can expect a darker feel from tracks like “You Got It On” and “Not a Bad Thing.” “Even the midtempo songs have a groove to them,” added Wright.

The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 Tracklisting

Lady Gaga Fears Weight Will Overshadow Her Music

Lady Gaga’s weight fluctuated quite a bit last year. After gaining about 25 pounds in early 2012, she began to get back in shape before her “Born This Way Ball” tour started in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Her mission to get back into tip-top shape, by reportedly eating a gluten-free diet and taking spin classes, has been working ever since. And although the “Applause” hitmaker looks a lot slimmer these days, Gaga doesn’t really care about her weight.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show yesterday, she said:

“Well you know, I had to get back in shape, but to be fair I have never cared about my weight … it’s other people that care. I do fear at times that if I’m not in shape, people will talk about that and not my music.

Like It or Not, Miley Cyrus is Hip-Hop’s New Bad Girl & Working With Anna Wintour?

Miley Cyrus may be the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, but the five-foot-five-inch platinum blonde pop sensation wants more for herself than squeaky clean Disney fame or her dad’s “achy-breaky” legacy and whether you like it or not she’s hip-hop’s new “it girl.”

Like other Disney-bred hotties before her (see: Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears), Miley Cyrus has made the transition from innocent child star into a young woman who is comfortable expressing herself as she sees fit. She’s grown increasingly edgy, sexual, and decidely hip-hop-friendly.

Some wonder why this blue-eyed songbird has become such a hit with the hip-hop crowd– going so far as to accuse her of appropriating “Black” culture, but the truth is that rappers were checking for her long before she took notice of them.

In 2009, Young Money CEO Mack Maine made it clear that Miley Cyrus was going to be trouble when he shouted her out in the Young Money single, ‘Every Girl in the World,’saying, “In about three years, holla at me Miley Cyrus.” Never mind that she was 16 when the song released– but the YM president had it right because four years later he’s not the only rapper wanting to ring her phone.

Lostprophets' Ian Watkins moved to psychiatric hospital, 'on suicide watch'

Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins has been moved from Bridgend prison to a psychiatric hospital as he prepares to stand trial.

The 36-year-old has denied 23 sexual offences involving children, including two counts of raping a baby. He is on suicide watch and is being monitored five times an hour, a court has heard.

The 'Rooftops' singer appeared via video link at a pre-trial review today (August 13) at Cardiff Crown Court.

His defence barrister Sally O'Neill said: "He has been seen by a clinical psychologist and she believes he should be receiving anti-psychotic medication… She wants him to be taken to a secure hospital for assessment and treatment.

"He is on suicide watch five times an hour."

Watkins's trial is due to begin in November. He has denied all of the child abuse charges he is facing.

Kim wont leave the house till shes 115 pounds, obsessed with getting her fabulous pre baby body!

Tomorrow will mark two full months since Kim Kardashian gave birth to her daughter North West, and appearances from the once-ubiquitous reality TV personality have been scarce since she became a mother.

That’s because she refuses to make her re-emergence into the spotlight until she’s back to her pre-baby form, a source tells US Weekly, noting that the socialite has been indefinitely staying behind closed doors at her mom’s Hidden Hills, Calif. home, “extremely self-conscious about her current body.”

Kim didn’t even show up for her sister Kylie’s sweet 16 at Nobu Malibu Aug. 10, making the dubious claim she couldn’t find a babysitter for North as an excuse for why she couldn’t attend.

Kim “said when she comes out and gets photographed for the first time she wants to look hot, hot, hot,” a family insider told the magazine, adding that her goal weight is 115 pounds, and problematic post-baby areas have been her thighs and rear end.
